I’m just assuming most of the people here aren’t taking in to account “condensation” that builds up on alternating hot/cold surfaces.
Shower gets hot, then cools down, condensation.
Show is cold, then warms up, condensation.
Concrete board holds up under condensation.
Sheetrock barely holds up under a sneeze.

No offense to your post, but any drywall with whatever rating becomes a sponge when it gets wet. And any that says mold or moisture resistant is complete rubbish. I’ve demoed so many showers with green board full of mold… drywall in showers and tub surrounds should’ve stayed back in the 1980’s. Cement board if not waterproofed will absorb water, but at least it won’t turn to mush like drywall.

I primed my greenboard and tiled right over it. 14 years and its fine. The key is not to allow any grout cracking. If it does crack in corners seal it up with more grout or matching caulk. Sealing the grout prevents any water from getting behind the tile anyway. All these new systems are overkill for people who allow their grout to crack and let water in which shouldnt happen in the first place. steam showers are different of course.

I would question if a thinset lap joint is actually waterproof or just water resistant?? I think this assembly's longevity will be highly dependent on the frequency of it's use. With today's trends of showers being used four or more times per day, the mortar and thinset are going to be damp all the time. Eventually that moisture would wick through those joints like almost any cementitious product, would it not?

This is Schluter Kerdi membrane which is used for this type of application, waterproofing some drywall. Why? I don”t know lol. If you had studs to begin with it is easier and way better waterproofing if you use either the Schluter Kerdi Boards (which are panels like drywall but made to be waterproof) orrrrr even way better a Wedi shower kit, which is similar to Kerdi board except better and 100% waterproof all the way through the board. The Schluter curbs that he was cutting down are ridiculously big and obnoxious, Wedi has scaled these down to a nice to look at and less offensive size. Also, Wedi comes in full shower kits where Schluter makes you piece it together. HydroBlok is now Wedi’s look a like competitor with almost identical products.

I have ripped out over 100 showers every single one of them had failures always in the same places. Always the usual suspect areas. Never seen any damage above 3 feet high unless it is a leaky shower control or head! My suspicion is that everyone is going crazy with these waterproofing fabrics myself included. If everyone of us steps back a bit and only waterproofed for example 4 feet high and around the shower control and shower head would the shower last long enough to be out of fashion or look dated? Our industry has turned into a bit of a rat race schlutering ourselves to death including ceilings.
Most European installs use cement based products. For me that allows for an attempt and four foot high membrane installs. It is simple either the shower fails or it doesn’t. I believe four feet is enough to reach 25 years + . Definitely worth an aggressive discussion.

Lets assume for a moment that the drywall will never fail in that shower. That doesnt make it a good idea to use it. Honestly how much more does cement or backer board cost than drywall for that small of an area? 20% more? So $120 for concrete vs $100 for drywall? Id gladly pay that small increase for the safety factor alone. Also you can just pass the increased cost onto the client. What benefit does drywall have if any in this situation? I dont get the logic for drywall. I understand schluter systems will warranty the product over drywall, but thats assuming they will actually pay in the case of a failure ( they probably will not). Most likely they will blame the installer. Also if they do pay you still need to demo out the failed shower and construct a new one.

If it’s not epoxy grout, which is the only one rated waterproof, then water wicks into it, then into the thinset. But, another issue is using real stone in showers. As a tile guy myself, I don't have a problem with kerdi over greenboard after all, it is manufacturer approved and warranted by Schluter as long as the entire system is followed to the letter, however I personally use KBRS shower pans and a product called GoBoard for the walls because it is lightweight and waterproof from the factory, all butt joints get "welded" with KBRS ShowerSeal, an extremely effective polyurethane caulk and then I do all my waterproofing steps on top of it. My problem here is all of your credibility went out the window as soon as I saw your bench framing, you didn't put a single support attaching the front to the wall, and you should've had at least 3, 4 even better, one on the inside, one on the outside and another 1 or 2 centered in between, do better next time and hope that a 300lb man isn't using that bench for a long time

Never use drywall. Ever. I actually use goboard then put the kerdi over it. 2x waterproofing.

You logic for picking plasterboard over cement board is extremely flawed. Plaster dissolves faster then cement board when wet

the effort to install the drywall, you should have installed something else. thin set is not water proof

uh, drywall, not even green board, is definitely not water proof and if given a choice it should NEVER be used in a shower.

Personally I just put extra thinset towards the back end of it and then set a level on it until it’s pitched inwards. You can measure for 1/4” over 1’ span but I personally just eye ball it for benches/niches/curbs using a small level
