  • Studies have shown that improving thoracic spine mobility can translate to less injuries involving the shoulder and neck as well as decreased prevalence of low back pain. Here I present strategies for a gentle (and possibly safe) thoracic mobility routine.

    Genius experimentation Alfons. I had been playing and searching for a sideways bend equivalent to the pelvic tilt spinal flexion and extension exercise on sits bones and a chair, and now I have it. Students love being able to contrast different ways of the spine moving: the spine following the movements of other parts of the body (like the pelvis); the spine moving when you 'tell' the spine to move and; the spine moving because of a functional instruction - such as move your shoulder towards your pelvis. This gives them a sense of what a 'free spine' might mean. I also love the way you have found a way for us to play with movement in the upper thoracic ribs. So thanks. Great. Just great.

    After doing this lesson, I tried the side bending poses at the beginning of the Bikram yoga sequence. What a difference! My hips and shoulders went into the proper position all on their own - first time in over 20 years of practice that I didn't have to adjust them. Woot!

    Thanks again, sometimes the movements do not look as they should
    make sense, but, they work.

    I can’t believe my luck in finding this exercise. I’m working with my doctor on a mystery upper thoracic spine issue which has caused me some alarming pain. I watched this late at night and I’m so relieved! I’ll do this work tomorrow and will look for results. Thank you, Alfons.

      It was a nice video
      Will try on patients with reduced thoracic mobility.
      First will try on myself to see the difference it makes.

    Hello Alfons, please do you know the name of the feldenkrais lesson where we sit on a chair while holding our left shoulder with right hand and resting the forhead in the crook of the right elbow?

      On a chair? Maybe Frank Wildman, The Busy Person‘s Guide to Easier Movement, Movement Lesson 4 & 5 ?

    I have a lot of trouble with a stiff neck, leading to headaches. While doing this movement I noticed that my neck stiffened, and it felt worse afterwards. This is a common experience for me. I also stiffen my neck when writing emails etc. wonder how I can stop doing this?

    • @ImprovingAbility
      @ImprovingAbility  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmm interesting... why do you think that is? I can only help you to ask questions here... this lesson could count as a mobility exercise... do all mobility exercises cause your neck to stiffen up? What happens if you do stability exercises, like isometric loading (classic physiotherapy exercise where you press with one hand against your head without giving in), or stiffening the neck like in my last video, “the broomstick”? Or lift your neck against gravity, like in my video “when I have neck pain i do this”? Also, do you have inflammatory things in your diet, like vegetable oils or animal based food? Or do you have amalgam fillings? Mold somewhere? Or are you eating toxin laden food like fish, or even worse: fish oil supplements? No question too strange, keep asking questions...

      Gosh that was a quick reply Alfons. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me so extensively. They are very intriguing questions. I feel that I've got a little bit closer to solving the problem, which has been a mystery to me, not to mention my doctor! Could I have a one-to-one session with you at some point soon? Maybe via zoom?

    Try to relax a little but when talking you keep on rambling which makes it annoying to follow. The exercise was great though.
