I'm a serious collector since 2018 and I think grading is dumb. To each their own, no judgement!
Grading isn't for everyone. Some collectors like to collect because an item is rare regardless if its raw or sealed. I do agree with you though, it's not for everyone. I collect both.
Its a scam. The grading company and the auction house are owned by the same people
Depends on the expected value of the VHS. If it's a lot, then you should probably grade it. Just for protection purposes.
You only need to grade VHS Tapes if you are going to sell them to some investor and the grading vastly increases the value. If you just want a nice display then get generic cases to put them in to protect them while on display or in storage. Grading is for investors not collectors. Investors are like ponzi players. They keep finding more victims until they run out of them then it all collapses. If you are a collector then learn how to grade them yourself and buy them raw and ungraded saving you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
Exactly the sad truth is the whole grading scam is just that a scam no matter if it's cga psa james Spence there all the same out to get a sucker with no brain. Like you pointed out before grading destroyed every hobby you would grade with your eye! Raw is the only way to go a graded/slabbed item is only worth what someone is willing to pay
Love love when you do these types of videos and bring others on who have this knowledge. 😊
He does a great job helping the community.
Great interview with Rod! Thank you both!
I’m glad that you liked it!
Very interesting and informative for the novice to this field.
Thanks!
I've been waiting for this video
Glad we could help
Man I love VHS. Thanks for the show about them Kevin.
Very nice indy.. first print dirty dancing with the vestron watermarks... very nice pull brother
He killed it with his grades!
Great info thanks
Glad that you liked it.
Great video!
Thanks!
Picked up my first sealed VHS tapes at an estate sale. I think I'm just going to pick them up regardless just because they are cool. I found a Con Air and Air Force One. Pretty sure neither are worth anything but they're in great shape.
A "smudged" watermark does not affect the seal grade but a crispy watermark does add desirability to it..
They also hit the box and seal harder for damage to the front... you don't want to leave on stickers that are covering the title or cover art
I agree. The placement of box and seal damage is huge factor in desirability. I hate it when the stickers are on the main art work.
what would be the best grading company to go with for opened non sealed vhs tapes? sealed vhs seam to be to expensive and hard to find, I still want to collect and grade non sealed vhs without breaking the bank buying sealed but is it worth it to even grade open vis and which company to go with?
Love this! I don’t think I caught the video for the top VHS to watch for did you link it?
He dropped this one first. It should drop on Thursday.
I have Several Original Star Trek VHS Episodes Star Wars 3 Pack and Indiana Jones VHS
Tapes all Unsealed. Do you think they are worth anything?
Wow I'm just saying indeed, indeed thank you for this early evening true powerful video eassy/commentary is indeed in my opinion truth be told the truth and food for thought. Again thank you for your deep point of view.
I'm glad that you liked it.
Great vid! Very informative. Is there any way to know how many of a particular movie have been graded and at which grade? There is a census for CGC where you can look up how many comics have been graded and at which grade and for various variants. I was wondering if there's something similar in VHS. Thanks
That will be coming down the line. They usually wait to they get a bigger sample size before they release a population report.
Make sure you keep those boxes, the will come in handy 🤣🤣🤣
Do signatures add value, how does that work?
I have a tape that has a sticker over the bar code, under the cellophane but the cellophane seal does have a watermark from the studio. I picked it up for cheap but would be concerned to sell it as an original sealed VHS. Have you ever seen anything like that?
I would search to see if you can find any other copies like that. I find it weird that the sticker was placed under the seal.
Long but awesome!
Thank you!
there is also rewind grading , p1 grading , and most recently cgc grading
We filmed this a while back before CGC was taking submissions. You are correct. Rewinding is very interesting to me because they are putting actors/actresses first appearance on the label which is a very nice touch.
What does an authentic signature on top of a seal do to the grading process? Should someone still get a sealed vhs graded if it’s been signed by one of the actors in the film?
Depends on what the vhs is? If the vhs is worth grading which is rare, it would likely add value if it is authentic. The signature could be graded and authenticated as well
What I find interesting is the difference between the US and UK markets. Not so much the values but rather the difference in retail packaging. The card slipcase style, which seems to have been the standard in the US was hardly seen here in the UK (other than for blank media). The standard retail pack here would have been the hardcase with clamshells used for 'premium' titles. Back in the day I had a complete set of Star Trek (the original series) on VHS, bought week by week as they caught my eye. They certainly used quite a lot of shelf space. I don't recall what happened to them...
Incidentally, resealing is not just the preserve of private collectors (or scam artists). Media are routinely resealed by distributors for a variety of reasons. I work for a major international manufacturer and distributor of media (who shall remain nameless as I want to continue working for them for a while longer). A lot of retail stock rotates back to the supplier/distributor and this stock will be inspected, any retail stickers removed and, if damaged, the wrap (seal) will be replaced. Stock may also have new artwork either as cover art or o-ring (card sleeve) which again may require a reseal. I've even seen the discs themselves replaced when a manufacturing fault is spotted after packaging (I won't dwell on how QA can miss discs that are miscoded and unplayable!).
Another instance of resealing might be where a unit is being included in a promo pack (eg with a console) or in special order gift packs where the barcode would be over-stickered 'Not for individual resale'.
For some studios we have watermarked film but, in the main. a plain film is used. Depending how many units are being sealed we can replicate the original style of seal with the folded ends (quite an impressive machine to watch) but for one-offs or larger boxsets we will often use heat shrunk film, like the obviously resealed example you showed.
The point of this over-long post is that the 'new' product bought off the shelf of your friendly neighbourhood retailer (or even eBay) may have gone through a whole series of perfectly legitimate and studio approved reseals over the years. I know I've seen product reworked to remove mention of promos that expired ten years ago! Quite where that leaves grading of optical media is a question for the future.
I agree with you on the international releases. I find it fascinating on how they distributed them with different slip covers.
@pickingandpunching question. What about getting autographed copies? I have a sealed 1st Edition Karate Kid that I want to get graded. Will Zabka, Ralph, and Martin Kove are at Cons all the time. If I got them to sign over the shrink filmed box and get photo proof for authentication and then send to IGS would that make the resale value even higher or would signing the film degrade it?
@@radgraham grading companies have their own policy on what they will accept or not accept as proof of autographs. For example, CGC comics will only say it’s authentic/witness signature on their label if a cgc worker was present for the autograph. If I got a book signed and mailed it to them. They would grade the book and say “Name” written on cover. They would not authenticate it because they didn’t witness it. Just be careful. Double check with them before you do anything.
CGC does grade VHS now and
They do witness signatures at a convention. I would reach out to them as well to see what they would need.
@@pickingandpunching awesome. Thanks for responding so fast. 👍
Any titles I should keep an eye out for?
Also, what about VHS cassettes that are not with their original cover/case ? Can those be sent for grading?
I suppose but it would have to be the rarest of vhs I would think.
KEVIN - Be sure to get that 1987 First Print TOP GUN VHS graded! Perhaps try and carefully remove the price sticker from the front beforehand.
I think he is planning on it.
I need help with the value of my VHS cassette tapes I watched your video and did not realize I'm sitting on potentially a decent amount a vintage VHS tapes that I've been collecting since I've been a kid I've had people tell me to get rid of them but I never did I believe I might have some rare copies only problem is I don't understand fully how to write them and what is rare and what is not do you have a list of movies that are worth value and also what would make it valid bowl the year and so on please and thank you I'm in a desperate situation I've had a pretty tough life and now I have a three-and-a-half-year-old and I am now looking for a second chance at having a good life for him and I please help me most people aren't sympathetic anymore and this video has changed everything potentially for me thank you and looking forward to being contacted by you
How long until Rod is going to be the 4th on the trash to cash podcast. He has a great youtube channel and I have a blast reading his responses to the trolls in his comments.
Your wish may come sooner than you think 😉
@@pickingandpunching I was just about to respond "not happening" because of your relationship with Kat BUT maybe not? 🤔✌
@@socalogp7296 I’m still with Kat on Tuesday nights. I was a fill in this week on Trash to Cash for Kevin.
@@pickingandpunching Nice!! Looking forward to it. ✌
What if there open box shell Disney movies how do I know what to look for if there worth anything
basically none are almost none of those are worth anything more than a few bucks.
Hey Oh!!!
Hey Oh!!!
Is a sealed McDonald's back to the future worth it for grading purposes?
It really comes down to condition of the box and seal. Getting it graded for personal collection vs to resell. Anything that you personally want to keep is worth getting graded.
Looks to be in really great shape, thanks!
With all do respect on grading and collecting sealed VHS tapes. With VHS tapes being one of the only collectible items that was rented in mass across 1000’s of Video rental places I would think a previous rented copy that still works but has the original stores rental sticker would be more valuable than a sealed copy. Although these were rented in mass not many survived.
The most valuable tend to be the first runs to rental stores that were never opened and still sealed.
i wish wee were seeing 5-7x the price graded , i dont think were there just yet but i hope we are real close
The market is so new. We have to give it a couple of years to get a better understanding of it. Thats why its so important to collect what you love.
does a VHS tape need to be sealed in order to be worth any money?
No but if they are the value goes up immensely however even the vast majority of sealed vhs aren’t worth much of anything
6 things about vhs tapes 1 it doesn't matter how old they are it continues to play 2 vhs tapes don't lock up at all like internet does and your phone does 3 vhs tapes don't have bad color tvs causes problem's like that all the time 4 vhs movies more free whiching in your house now days y get rid of them 5 vhs tapes don't have to be updated updated at all 6 vhs movies more healthy than Disney plus y it keeps you moving more getting up and down
So, would it be worthless to send unsealed VHS tapes for grading? Or would it really depend on the rarity / popularity factors of any movie VHS tapes that are unsealed, in order to be sent for grading? I have no prior experience or knowledge in terms of what kind of collectibles are worth to be sent for grading, irrespective of their condition.
I better get my sealed Craftsman mower how-to VHS graded...
Lol
def be the only one on the market with that one, lol.
@@pickingandpunching Should I overnight it to you for your collection?
@@88picks54 with such a rare oddity, you may want to personally deliver it. I’m sure you can find a last minute flight. 😂
I don’t know what arbitrage means! I have googled it. But seems different from what you are talking about. Help!!😂
it means taking an item out of one marketplace through a purchase and putting it in another marketplace that is more suitable to get a higher price in order to make a profit.
@@GarageSaleNation1 Thanks
So are we to surmise that you sold your 4 graded VHS and then purchased the Chevy?! 😉✌
Cgc cases feel really cheap.. I don't like them.. igs is the leader in Graded media
I love IGS cases. I haven’t used CGC yet. I will try them soon.
New IGS cases are even better … makes tape more prominent
How much does it cost to get a vhs graded?
A BOLO cars from Pixar!
Sealed cars is the dream find!
The VHS too. I found that out late after leaving a church sale...
But I am in the UNITED KINGDOM , we don't have these things over here
Super informative
