Hello Mark. I watch your channel regularly with a happy smile and I have to say that not only are you my favorite Australian palette artist, you are actually one of the best in the field. You are authentic, have a good sense of humor and just say how it is without covering it up with blah blah.
A very nice video with the core statement at all. JUST GET STARTED! - and how right you are!
Several years ago I started looking at the whole palette community and for fun (and because I lacked a hobby ;-) ) I started making a small workshop out of my garage with a few small bills.
In the meantime, I'm seriously considering switching my office job to part-time, because I've found that I prefer my time in the workshop instead sitting in a coffin office... and because I can earn good money there too... and I have more fun there ...and I'm much more balanced now...and it's not rocket science. A little common sense, a little caution and a dose of willpower... and the rest will come with time.
Thank you so much for your videos, the time you put in, your inspirations (I hope it's not a drama that I recreated a thing or two from your ideas) and the courage to show people that they can do anything what they want... THEY JUST HAVE TO START IT!

Great video mate! ...but I am that guy :P From day one I've pretty much bought once, and I can only think of two tools I have had to replace, sell or upgrade and that was my little Ryobi palm sander and jigsaws which got "tealed" after a few years of service :P I took nearly 5 years to get a bloody tablesaw for jeebuzz sake! :P But then I also started with your #1 Rule, and with the Handyman business I did very quickly pay off all my higher end purchases and didn't add anything until the old stuff was paid off *and* had a home. Staying organised and keeping unneeded crud out of the shop is also a brilliant bit of advice. I hope this one goes far and wide, top bit of info :D

It’s also a great concept because by working with what you have, you can really start to see where your limitations/bottlenecks are. And that lets you prioritize where your expenditures go first to get the most bang for your buck and sort the “want” from the “need”.

  • @delbasidtimbers

The "buy once, cry once" really only kicks in after you've used and experienced cheaper brands, usually where accuracy in machining is involved and needed. I have some tools that are thousands of dollars in cost each but i also, as you mention, have cheapies such as power drills and disk sanders that i just trash while power sanding. Everyone has to start somewhere and at a certain price point. There is no point or logic in blowing your budget on one super expensive tool when starting if you can buy 5 for the same price and learn while making. At the end of the day when you bring your item inside, give it as a gift, or sell it, no-one else apart from you knows what tool you used, how long it took, or indeed any oopsies that you make. When you spend the time to make something to the best of your abilities and you start to love woodworking....or whatever else....then there is value in investing the right money in the right tool at the right time in your journey.

Likewise my drill press, J.S.Richardson Model E40 (1940s) not for the faint hearted if you need to move it, but at another 50 kangaroos who can complain. I love “just get started.”
Another good one is, “Give yourself permission to suck.” You will not be perfect, or even good, the first time you make something. Keep making things. You will get better.

I’ve always dabbled with pallets here and there but I only really got into them properly during lockdown .
8x8 shed . Circular and mitre saw , palm sander , drills , pencil and roofing square .
I made a heap of stuff mainly for the garden cos that’s where I spent 2020 and they’re still going strong now . Planters , decking , bbq table , compost grid etc .
I now use them to make planters to sell and boy do they they sell .
If anyone moans at me I just say I’m saving the planet from pallets going into land fill , helping others with the cost of living crisis as the local hardware stores sell them at unrealistic prices and it’s bloomin good for our mental health . Yes , that’s right it’s therapy !
I love the chase of hunting pallets ( I always ask permission at industrial estates ) choosing the right ones , hauling them home and ripping them down . When the lumber shelves are full I feel good and get straight to work .
Clock watching never happens and when im in my workshop I just wish there was 48 hours in a day .
Then there’s the sell , I love how people want my stuff !
I think the whole “pallet by a bin “to something saleable process is an art in itself . We all learn the hard way and have lots of wood to burn but when you get the knack for it it becomes addictive. The addiction becomes an obsession then you wonder Why it’s not your full time job .
Mark , love the channel buddy , subbed over here .

Hi new to your site. I love how straight talking you are, no BS it is refreshing to watch, and I understand being tight. I am from the South Yorkshire in the UK and people say Yorkshire folk have deep pockets and short arms. I sound like you would fit in well in Yorkshire. I do have some basic cheapo tools, and I really want to get building, thing is it is winter there and I don't have a workshop 🥶😫

Mark, cracking video, really enjoying these. A quick note to say there's an alternative to buying a pneumatic denailer - just found a five-year old video on here thast demonstrates it - all you need is an SDS drill with hammer action and a lockable chuck ... th-cam.com/video/CSWrnVF8NgQ/w-d-xo.html

  • @jessss1011

Hey Mark, I got the denailer - how right you are - maaaaate it's a game changer. I put my 76 year old mum on it (she loves being in the wood shed with me) and she loves it. I have the cheapo stuff as well and slowly saved for a carbetc planer as the first real expensive one. ALso a game changer. I've got another rule with my crippled hands so if I can find an electronic way of making life easier I will - hand tools are for people who have real working hands!! Just love your Oz okka sayings - keep em coming mate.

What is your work flow like? Nebie here. Several questions....How many palletes do you break down at a time? After de nailing do you clean and square as you go to have stock ready or just as needed? Why to you make so with the boatd glued vertically vs building things with the wider board. Thanks

Awesome video. Just out of interest are pallets in Aus different to those in the UK? some of ours look pretty janky! That said, after building a new large shed out of OSB i decided that cladding was ridiculously expensive so I used pallet staves. It has a nice weathered look and i suspect will last at least twice as long as the previous shed which i salvaged storm damaged from a field and even that did 9 years.

Hey man, love the content, and you've helped me get started in woodworking. I do have a question for you, if that's ok. Do you just take pallets apart or do you cut some of the boards to avoid pulling nails and such?

Where would Aussie woodworking be without Bunnings, the weekend BBQ stand that sells tools and timber too?
Agree get started with cheap tools and carefully plan, deliberate and research the right tools at the right price and quality point for the types of project you will do and fit your workspace.

Best video I watched in 2023! Being in business for 20 years and using the buy once cry once rule even in my shop doesn't work, new variant comes out a year later with more features anyway and if you wait to get the best you're missing out on projects you can tackle today. The man speaks the truth, get started with what you can get, grown with time, you'll get there

I love woodworking and I do it every weekend, but my garage sux to be in, living at the coast my cars have to be inside evening - rust - and to redesign my garage is just too much money, my family also uses my garage as a storage bin, so to keep the peace I just keep quiet. The woes of being in this situation is just appalling.
