No shade on Cam's amazing talent and production values, however I believe the main reason for his channel's attraction and high subscriber count is the sensual, satisfying, ASMR nature of the epoxy and woodworking process.
As a former EMS helicopter mechanic and now an aspiring woodworker, I’m encouraged by his forthright comments and candid observations! Maybe there’s hope for me too! lol The interview was very well done, and most enjoyable to watch! Thank you both!
Cam's honesty. The no "I am the ultimate and perfect woodworker" persona that is so prevalent amongst other channels. I thoroughly enjoy and have learned a lot from his mistakes (most of which I have made many times over, I am not as smart as he is and it takes me a few tries to work through the best fix).......
Cam is easily one of the best "How to" channels on TH-cam, absolutely no fluff, no pandering, and no nonsense childish "gotcha" thumbnails to drive views. Just a well educated gentleman, showing how it is done.
How this interview was conducted, the subject matter, along with Cameron's personable manner, honest explanations and willingness to answer question in such a candid way really kept me engaged in this video. Nice job.
One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was from an old timer when I got into high end woodworking. He told me a mistake is only a mistake if you cant fix it, and if it's a major mistake make it a highlight.
I'm a dentist and I DID Make my own walnut and epoxy coffee table thanks to Cam. It was a ton of work but I knew what I was getting into since woodworking was a hobby already. Great interview, great interviewee. Well done guys!
@@UpFlip i would think its difficult to make money woodworking- the wood and materials are really expensive. I've made 5 or 6 pieces of furniture for my house( all on my dental office website!). In almost every instance wood has been close to 1000 if not more. So at that point if it takes 5 days to complete a piece (wishful thinking for a hobbyist) it would have to sell for over 2k to net 200 per days work. Dont think that can happen, at least not for me.
These are really great questions and I love how transparent Cam is about all of this. When you know you're miles ahead of the most of the competition you know you've got nothing to worry about in being transparent.
Yes he is transparent. He said he only works "high end" projects now, aka only 1%'s can afford. Forget all the 1.3 million subscribers who can't afford a $15k - $30k and up products he makes. It's a middle finger to his supporters. Subscribing to craftsmen who make and sell to everyone, not just the super rich, is the true good natured crafter. This is the problem with society, using people to get ahead, then ditching them for $$$. Politicians do it all the time to get elected. The commenters/fans of his totally missed what he said, it revealed his true nature, greed. I unsubscribed. Advice, most people suffer from the cult of personality, almost worshipping people they admire. The only person deserving of our worship is Jesus. God bless. 🤠🙏✝️🇺🇸
I've been watching Cam for a while now. I'm not a wood worker but what he does is facinating. The one thing that makes his videos so great is him. He presents very well. He cares about what he is doing and there is no BS, no bombast. He comes across as a genuine guy and people respond to that.
I've been a fan of Cam's for a while and I still found this video really worth while. It's cool to hear him with another person and you guys asked a lot of great leading questions. Thanks for posting!
I love that dude is so honest, he had to stop being a pilot, because he didn't want to risk other peoples lives, doesn't want to just have 50 employes to rake in more cash, and just shouts out his wife all the time. good guy.
I'm a heavy diesel mechanic, but my passion and desire to start my own wood working business is strong. I love the aside about starting small and testing the market for demand when determining when to make that big leap. Thank you for this!
@@UpFlip I've been wood working for a couple years now. I started out making patio furniture using a basic blue print and I saw a big jump in demands, but stopped building because I was really selling myself short thinking "what would people pay" instead of thinking "what is my work worth". I think I'm going to start up again!
So glad Upflip found Cam to interview! This guys is great at what he does, very honest and transparent, and overall seems to have a passion for what he is doing. He goes above and beyond on his videos and probably one of the people I watch most on TH-cam as I hope to be doing similar to what he does and to be able to make it a business as he has. Upflip I big thanks to you guys as well. I’ve been watching you guys a lot for the last month or so and appreciate the real deal content as I’m always trying to find a new venture of making extra income. Thank you for putting out this content. It’s always encouraging!
Congrats to Cam, I've been following him for a while and had a video chat with him when I started. Well deserved recognition and thanks for all the tips!
@@UpFlip yes, just at the beginning stage. 3rd carrier, turning a hobby to a business. Not good at the social media thing and learning how to make videos
When it comes to what makes a business work...who you are and what you represent will sell itself. This guy is so open and honest, it makes you want to do business. All the internet tricks cannot hide a bad person. Awesome business!
Thank you for watching Cliqboom. 😀We appreciate you supporting both channels. Cam has some great work and work ethic. What are some of your favorite pieces of his?
I used to watch every single Blacktail Studio video. I never understood all the hate Cam got from the woodworking purists just because he uses epoxy. His work is always stunning.
The same reason someone who pierces ears would get hate from surgeons if they called themselves a surgeon. Just because he works with wood does not mean he has the skills or talent or knowledge of talented woodworkers. He proves this on numerous occasions with his mistakes in videos.
@@SimielBlackmost people don’t show their mistakes, they all want to come off as perfect. You think Tom Silva or Norm Abram are 100% perfect daily…doubt it. Lots of old school guys may be “more talented” don’t have a clue on how to run a business in today’s ultra fast paced world and are envious of someone “quick” success.
@@peterfreeman3317 The reason he gets hate isn't because of his success, it's because he calls what he does woodworking. 90% of his business is cleaning live edges and pouring epoxy. That is his business. It is not woodworking. He's evoking a legacy of talent he doesn't have. He IS extremely talented at pouring and finishing epoxy and a savvy business owner. He's still a terrible woodworker.
@@SimielBlack what is a wood worker? Someone who works with wood. He obviously works with wood. Epoxy tables are hot right now, he sees the market and goes for it. Is he a Master Craftsman? No he isn’t, but he still has talent. I like the guy. He saw an opportunity to do something he loves and make bank. What’s the issue? How about you put away all your tools and use 100-200 year old wood working tools like the “real woodworkers”, start a TH-cam channel, and start a 180K a year business!
@@peterfreeman3317 You not understanding what a woodworker is, is exactly why you don't get this. A mechanic who works with metal parts all day is not a metalworker. Someone who repairs phone screens all day is not a glassblower. Working with a substance does not make you a worker of that substance. He's a resin-worker if you want to be absolutely literal. However, that does not evoke the feeling of craftmanship he wants to convey, because he's a savvy businessman he calls himself a woodworker, because people who don't think about it at all will get the right "feeling". He wants to evoke the feeling of master crafted furniture, of a legacy business that maybe was a craft passed down in his family, or from another craftsman, over 10,000 hours, of apprenticeships and practice. He does little to no joinery, or actual furniture making, creating an epoxy and wood slab and adding metal legs is no more woodworking than you putting together an ikea table. You front me the £20,000 I'd need to get and furnish a workshop with which to start a business like his and I will make my own YT channel. I'm not an ex-helicopter pilot with a shit-ton of money and a wealthy family to help me start a business.
I’m such a huge fan of Cam! He inspired me to start making cutting boards / incorporating epoxy art and filling in my tool organizers I build, or furniture that my mom asks me to build etc!! Her friends now even ask if they can pay me to make them stuff! He unlocked such a fun hobby for me and his videos are always something super relaxing to watch and learn from at the end of the day!:)
Super amazing Nicholas. 😀This is wonderful to hear. We love your inspiration and would love to see some of your work. What's one of your favorite projects that Cam has done?
Cam is the most honest guy...and one of the most respectable folks in the business of this...I have watched quite a bit if not all of his vids....along with backwoods, john malecki and many many more.......honesty is ALWAYS the best policy....things take time, especially with perfection....CAM is the man with this.... purchase with confidence...
Fan of Cam for a couple years and happy for his success and spotlight here. I greatly appreciate his candid and openness sharing what he knows and his revenue. Very helpful and inspiring! Thanks guys!
I'm a Uk based subscriber to Blacktail Studios and have for a very long time enjoyed watching Cams content which he delivers with a very candid open honest approach and easy manner which makes him totally enjoyable to both listen to and watch. Its great he's been featured on this channel
Another EXCELLENT interview with an extremely candid and inspiring business owner! So much value, insight and wisdom provided throughout the entire interview! The insightful and relevent questions asked and the way these interviews are edited keeps you engaged, doesn't waste time and culminates with a TON of valuable information being disseminated. This 30 minute interview honestly seemed to be much shorter but still delivered such high quality value and content! Everyone can learn something of high value from these interviews even if it's not your specific business or area of interest, the universal aspects of business that the various interview subjects/business owners share that they found to be most beneficial and the unique lessons they learned along the way are absolute gems! I always get so pumped and inspired every time I watch one of these videos, this one in particular! Thank you and keep up the great work!
Cameron is great. Very personable and knowledgable. I've watched almost all of his videos. I'm a budding woodworker myself, so I try to learn a lot from him. The biggest hurdle for me, I think, is the social media aspect. I have IG right now, but I have a lot of younger people telling me I have to do more, so I'll probably enlist my kids to help. Anyway, his story is inspiring and I hope to have even half his success.
Just finished Cam’s online class and it’s worth every penny. I just bought my first piece of lumber and am about to begin my journey and I’m super stoked!!! 2 great TH-cam channels in one video
Great interview and very informative. One thing: selling 15k worth of product is not the same as “making” 15k a month. That’s a deceiving title/topic, as Cam could be selling 15k worth of tables and actually losing money. After 28 years owning 2 businesses, revenue doesn’t pay the mortgage and taxes, profits do. Much respect to Cam for taking the Entrepreneurial plunge and going for it!
I've been building boxes for 7 years and I want to change my focus to something where I'm not doing installs. I love wood, love finishing and love the look of a gnarly piece of burl or pretty grained wood with or without epoxy. Sounds like there may be plenty of business out there so I'm gunna be watching all your excellent videos. Thanks for putting this out there! I don't know what we would do without TH-cam, I learned a lot of my cabinetry skills and prevented many mistakes by watching other folks stuff...:)
Absolutely incredible work. I want to note here, the level of craftsmanship that Cameron brings to his wordworking and additionally to video production, etc… is born out of the ability to apply deep learning to the things Cameron tackles. I’m going to project here, Cameron can correct me if I’m wrong but, being a pilot by career, he learned early on, how to immerse himself in learning to achieve that, and in the same art while flying. The key of deep learning, hes then taken forward to his other efforts with I must say, an inredible level of effectiveness. Bravo Cameron, in everthing you do. Perhaps, at some point you can do a video on what you know, about how you learned, all that you’ve learned and applied in your career(s) and life.
This is awesome. I'm also a wood worker. Carver, burner and turner. I started a business a yr ago and it's been booming ever sense. Nordic Wolf Custom Carvings has taken off way beyond my wildest dreams. I'm also a one man team like yourself. So it's nice to see others in the same position. Thank you for sharing this.

Don't know how the link ended up in my feed, but absolutely enjoyed the interview. I've seen some of the Blacktail videos, and am in a similar situation, although I maintain my "real" job, and still do wood/metal working as a hobby. You asked a lot of the questions I always wonder. Great show!
This was great to watch. I’m a woodworking pilot too but in the UK. Ive started selling stuff and though I’m not at Cams level yet I thought this was very inspirational. Great questions and answers! Thanks!
Glad you love this video! Your appreciation means a lot to us and motivates us to continue producing content like this. Do you have a business topic you want to see next on the channel? 🤔
From a financial perspective, selling a larger piece for $7-12K, even with 50-60% of that in materials, if you can then turn around and use off-cuts for a smaller piece to sell for $2-4K, leads to total revenue of $9-16K and expenses of $4-6K, or profit of $5-10K.
Thank you for your information you choose to share. You don’t hold back and that separates you from the average woodworker. Keep up the great work Cam. I always look forward to new videos from you.
I have been watching and learning from Cam for a couple years now. I think I joined his page with under 100K subs. Been a great ride to see him flourish and all the while teach his magic. Love this guy and his page and wish him all the success he deserves. Best part is his edgy and awesome comebacks to the TROLLS who feel the need to try to slight his work.. CLASSIC.

@@UpFlip Thank you so much. I just watched it with my morning coffee and once again found your interview inspiring. I also have now signed up for UpFlip as well. Kind regards Keith
I truly respect what Blacktail has built and celebrate his success, however I'm deeply concerned for the longevity of epoxy projects. I trained with a couple of the best woodworkers in the US and they strongly agree that wood movement makes river tables and similar projects likely to fail within a decade or two.
I do woodworking and stay away from them as much as possible. I've already heard from many people about furniture failure from so many social media woodworkers who only have a few years experience and just do what's popular. Epoxy separation is common as well as yellowing. Warping is probably the most common as the woodworkers don't let the wood dry down enough to be ready for working.
I started watching Blacktail a couple months ago. I’m not a woodworker but his content is so amazing and therapeutic. I’m now ramping up to do my first table. I recommend purchasing his epoxy pour class.
Love your videos and this one was particularly interesting! I’d love to know what gear you guys use to shoot your shows that always look so good. In particular, what cameras are you using? Thank you!
So good to see him on your channel. I’m knee deep in 3 resin tables at midnight. Funny I told a client 3 weeks for two massive tables I’m making for his coffee shop in NYC. I should have given myself more time!! Haha!
Love both your videos Love both watching both of you guys tremendous inspiration It would be nice if he hides an apprentice and kind of teaches like a younger guy to ropes and I think if he does that he'll be surprised at how much pressure it takes off him to run the business just a thought
Cam is a straight up guy and is why its why i follow his occasional streams and videos posted. Ive binge watched for entire days just to sharpen my wood working knowledge. This guys work is at such a high level that i could only dream to be at one day. Lets give a hats off to the interviewer and photographer as well. For once someone asked all the right questions and in a professional manner. 👍👍
Whilst I enjoy and enjoyed this content and believe me, I get it, Its inspirational and shows us an insight and asks questions that I assume we'd all like to ask however, always remember to take this with a pinch of salt. This guys lives with the biggest walnut slab seller in the world on his doorstep, quite literally - would you say that building a business making tables out of walnut slabs would benefit from this? absolutely. its not like it was a POG factory instead. He was a full time EMS pilot, weather you agree or not, that's a pretty decent salary. 50-60k a year here in the Uk. Now yes, it's brilliant to completely switch and take up a new trade, takes a lot of risk, but financial risk? I don't think so - not for him. If he failed, will he loose his job, house, rent, etc? My point is, things like this steer & clickbait people (including myself) to a "built from the ground up from nothing" style, and yes, you could argue he has, he bought a few inexpensive tools, to begin with, but this man, from what I could see only risked "not liking it". Reminds me of that I.T Crowd quote "When I started Reynholm Industries, I had just two things in my possession: a dream and 6 million pounds" I love blacktail studios, have watched hours of his videos an take inspiration from it and this was very insightful, but they gloss over the fact he started his business in literally the most idyllic situation possible.
That, and the fact that the actual woodworking is no longer the focus. It’s now about creating content to feed his social media. That’s a turnoff to me, makes him seem less authentic. I wish him well-obviously he is doing well-but it’s off putting to make it mostly about social media.
Thanks for sharing this great insight. I think we all would love to find that “dream job” and in todays internet world it’s easy to make things appear different then they are and you honed in on that. I found what you said more encouraging then this video.
@@annarichter4031 How does it make him lesss authentic? If you judge someone negatively for being on social media don't you find that hypocritical while consuming it? (Yes TH-cam is social media)
Not true I started a painting business 3 years ago because I became a single dad of 3 boys and couldn’t afford a 9 to 5 pay check, 3 years later i did 1 exterior house for 34k my second highest was 22k and my 3rd was 18k those 3 jobs took my and my 2 guys 5 weeks, all are other jobs are between 8k to 12k non stop threw out the summer, now it’s winter and it’s cabinet season, an average cabinet refinishing job is 4 days to a week and can start around 4,200 to 8,000. But you got to hustle, advertise, network, know what your doing and get referrals. Not everyone wants to work 70-80 hours a week, 7 days a week eventually if you work hard at something and put everything in it it will pay off, some ppl know how to grind and work hard but don’t know how to run a business or advertise and market your business and that’s why they fail.
Its definitely helpful to have money to start or this much free time for sure. But many have started with nothing. Probably not as much growth or as quickly as his but doable for sure
This whole “must be nice” culture makes me sick. Stop making excuses and do the thing you want to do, envying someone who has made smart professional decisions isn’t getting you anywhere. It’s not about being set up financially, it’s about passion.
And how do you think he had this high income career?? Come on, this guy should be an example. He used his free time to do something else than going to the bar, developed his skills, in woodworking and social media,.. and it worked, he took risks...will you? I have only one thing to say, "bravo" And thank you for sharing and inspiring (that's actually two or thre things to say, I know...)
Suggestion- the continuous, irrelevant and super short b roll cuts y'all placed at every possible gap are quite disorienting. Maybe some relevant footage to what he's actually talking about next time?
So, in summary… Cam married the most amazing and supportive wife ever, and has been able to use his new found talent to make great furniture. Damn, my wife was an idiot. Great interview with one of my favorite woodworkers. Thanks for showcasing Cam and his awesome projects.
Great interview, been watching Cam for at least 2 years now. Started binge watching when I broke my clavicle and was laid up for a while. Keep it up Cam it's great to see how well you're doing from another channels perspective.
This was a great video! Cam gave so many gems for starting a business, running a business, dealing with costumers and more. Super talented guy, I appreciate the video! Interviewer asked great questions too!
I see a lot of comments verbalizing the same thing that caught me the first time I watched one of Cam's Blacktail videos: He is smart, honest, perfectionist, customer focused yet really centered in his convictions which he communicates very concise, in a way you can't hold against him; He commands respect for his craft and people are sure they get a product that is both well thought through and well crafted and they are happy to pay the price for his craftmanship. The fact he emphasizes how important it is to him to be honest and transparent gives away all you need to know about who you are dealing with. And he is willing to learn, accept help from e.g. his wife, and when you hear him talk, you realize he developed a well rounded view of what his business should be, how it relates to himself and how it squares with his inner compass. So nothing he does, needs more than the truth to get across. He can stay true to his own values and it shows. Very inspirational and highly educational. They couldn't have picked a better person for this episode!
This is such wonderful feedback Jan. Cam has truly built a powerhouse of supporters by doing what he loves to do, keeping it honest and respectful and delivering great customer service. 😀 What's one of the most memorable pieces you've seen of his?
@@UpFlip I love the live edges he uses in his pieces. So indifferent of the assignment, that makes it come to life, IMO. And I love his dedication to wood as a material, he clearly learnt a lot over the years regarding the process of wood conservation and how to treat different phases of that process, if that makes any sense. It seems he never has to shy away from a piece of wood to work with but rather let it spike his interest and inspiration for his gorgeous designs. And that shows. Plus the extra mile he is willing to go, not cutting corners, which always elevates him to that level of the master in his craft, even though he maybe not even be the best in his craft, his dedication nudges him simply to that number one spot, I think. And I'm not even a fanboy, simply trying to observe and learn from these generous creators. Sorry, much longer answer than even I anticipated ;-)
I’ve been watching Cam for a while now, he seems like a very humble man. I think with the time and effort he has put in he deserves what he’s achieved.

Thanks for watching BenjaminsGuitars. We appreciate the great feedback. Are you new to the channel?
I love that dude is so honest, he had to stop being a pilot, because he didn't want to risk other peoples lives, doesn't want to just have 50 employes to rake in more cash, and just shouts out his wife all the time. good guy.
LOVE Cam and his videos. His honesty, his sense of humor and the quality of his work are amazing, been following him for a couple of years now.
I'm a heavy diesel mechanic, but my passion and desire to start my own wood working business is strong. I love the aside about starting small and testing the market for demand when determining when to make that big leap. Thank you for this!
We're happy you found the video useful Michael. Thanks for watching. 😀How long have you been into woodworking?
When it comes to what makes a business work...who you are and what you represent will sell itself. This guy is so open and honest, it makes you want to do business. All the internet tricks cannot hide a bad person. Awesome business!
Blacktail is my favorite plasticworking channel.
We're so glad to hear that JulienB. Have you checked out any of the other videos on the channel?
I have followed Cameron's work for quite a while. He seems like a legitimately great guy with an amazing work ethic. Thanks for showcasing his work.

I always get so pumped and inspired every time I watch one of these videos, this one in particular! Thank you and keep up the great work!
Cam is one of the best woodworkers on TH-cam. His work is immaculate!
One of the best and most informative videos I've ever seen.
Just finished Cam’s online class and it’s worth every penny. I just bought my first piece of lumber and am about to begin my journey and I’m super stoked!!! 2 great TH-cam channels in one video
Nice, any sales yet?
Respect to Cameron and Blacktail for being so transparent.
Agree. I personally wouldn't quit my day job to gross $180K a year.
He mentioned his margins are 40-90% so you can't actually lose money while taking a profit.
exactly.
Can you elaborate on deep learning?

Glad you love this video! Your appreciation means a lot to us and motivates us to continue producing content like this. Do you have a business topic you want to see next on the channel? 🤔
From a financial perspective, selling a larger piece for $7-12K, even with 50-60% of that in materials, if you can then turn around and use off-cuts for a smaller piece to sell for $2-4K, leads to total revenue of $9-16K and expenses of $4-6K, or profit of $5-10K.
That's it! I'm quitting my job tomorrow and starting a woodworking business. 🙂

Great interview! Cam is so truthful and humble. Good job and thanks!
That's amazing! Best of luck! 👊

Reminds me of that I.T Crowd quote "When I started Reynholm Industries, I had just two things in my possession: a dream and 6 million pounds"
I love blacktail studios, have watched hours of his videos an take inspiration from it and this was very insightful, but they gloss over the fact he started his business in literally the most idyllic situation possible.
I have to agree.

How to make 15k/mo woodworking......start with a high income career first.
Hate your mentality
And how do you think he had this high income career?? Come on, this guy should be an example. He used his free time to do something else than going to the bar, developed his skills, in woodworking and social media,.. and it worked, he took risks...will you?
I have only one thing to say, "bravo"
And thank you for sharing and inspiring (that's actually two or thre things to say, I know...)

So true! Hope you learned a lot from him! 🙏
