Just let your clacker toughen like a pair of old leather shoes and your good to go. Why you would want to soften up a part of your body that needs to be callused I`ll never know.
just like the man said, depends on length of ride and weather conditions. And the correct way is to apply it to the chamois so you can see what you are doing. ;-)
This is by far my favorite channel on TH-cam! I’m a relatively new solo cyclist, and you guys have introduced me to so much in the sport and made me so comfortable I can never thank you enough! If I have a question, I simply look it up on your channel, where I’m given history, humor, pros and cons for all levels of cyclists, and even data(!), all for FREE. Absolutely incredible. Thank you, guys.
Dude Man Lol that's why I didn't respond. I've always thought over the years whenever someone has to come out and correct someone spelling what does it really say about that person LOL. And in this case it's even more funny
Thank you! I am new new to biking. My dutch husband just taught me how to ride a bike. I live in a town with many bridges. I am proud of my progress, but not the chafing. Will definitely buy this.
True story, I left a half used tub of Chamois Cream at the In laws when I was staying there for a month and cycling everyday, anyway went back 6 months later and the Tub was almost totally empty, her dad had been using it on his face!!!!!!!!.............
Good luck WeNeedIt my son had some friends over and when looking for ice for a rum and Coke, use the portion of ice left in my cryo-cup (www.google.ca/search?q=cryo%20cup&tbm=isch)
I didn't use it for the first 3 years of riding, but then I got my first saddle sore. I have been using DZ Nuts for the past 5 years and it's been smooth sailing ever since. So yes, I do use it and I use it every ride.
I make my own. Utterly smooth, shea butter, lanolin, bit of tea tree oil. Can add other things if desired like a bit of noxzema or bees wax or aquaphor/bag balm. Mix it up in the Kitchenaid bub.
Maybe only available in the US, but Queen Helene cocoa butter cream works really well and is also very cheap. Lanolin is the key ingredient, if you have a wool allergy this isn't going to work. Add a bit of witch hazel for antimicrobial purposes and for $7 you'll have a years supply.
This vid prompted me to use chamois cream on a 72 mi sportiv a few days ago. I've never had any serious issues but the addition of cream made the 4.5 hour ride with a particularly brutal head wind so much more enjoyable. Smooth and buttery. I am a convert to the chamois cream, especially for multi day events.
Rainy weather is not the only reason to consider chamois cream. So is hot weather. Most modern chamois are like sponges and can absorb a lot of moisture. So, if you will be riding many miles in hot weather, your chamois can become soaked with sweat. This is another occasion when some chamois cream my be a good idea. Personally, I use Glide, an anti-chafing stick similar to a solid anti-perspirant. And the only time I use it is when I'll be cycling 100 miles (161 km) or more.
A little late to the party, but... but yes, the sweat on the skin and a chamy full of sweat is IMO the real problem. Deo stick seams like a better solution than adding more layers which catch even more water and salts on the skin; only problem is, that a deo stick application is like... double dipping... :-)
I'm a "tourist", discovered chamois cream a few years ago and now won't do without it. Even when I'm not actually on a tour, anything over 20 miles and on it goes. LG.
In addition to the cream during longer rides, I use (liberally) Witch Hazel where it counts. Keeps the bacteria population reduced as a added prevention measure.
I use the chamois creme almost everytime I am riding and it feels great, in February I made a 1000km ride without chamois creme and I soon got problems with my bottom which took quite some time to heal of. I can only recommend to use it.
Yes all the time on the home trainer. It’s anti bacterial and reduces friction. As commented good fit and saddle are first step. I use full channel and a big fan. Worth mentioning I never wear the same kit twice. One use goes in the wash.
The steak storyline led to immediate involuntary concurrent projectile vomit and explosive diarrhea, proving once again that cycling is great for weight loss! Thanks #GCN
I have really big thighs so I find it helps reduce friction around the inner thigh / groin / saddle interface for me. I think also the antibacterial ones can help prevent saddle sores as I've never had one in rides of over a hundred miles in all weather conditions over many years.
Haven't ever suffered from chafing so never used cream. Got heat rash and used aqueous cream to prevent and relieve it. Costs about 10% of the price of Assos. Now use only in hot weather.
I advocate cream all the time. But I've recently adjusted my position of more than 5 years, and the chaffing has hugely reduced. So, only by a few mm adjustment, I now have a multiple hours-in-the saddle comfy position! So, maybe a thought for anyone out there who relies on cream...
I had some chafing in an unfortunate spot in that region lately and while taking a few days off I ordered Chamois Butter and have never looked back. I use it on any ride over an hour.
i use chamois for about a year now , it hated it at first but then i feel like even more confortable. I use it when i do long ride or in wet condition to prevent irritation due to the water. Last tip for guys that shave their manly parts, when grow back smooth it with chamoi cream !!
Never had an issue with rubbing in Australia but currently in Florida I do, humidity I guess. I did a long ride, where the leg joins the pelvic region was so bad I couldn’t ride for days, so use all the time at the moment.
I stayed at a mate's house one night before a long ride. He gave me a sachet of 'chamois cream' which I duly applied the next morning before the ride. Should have read the label because it was 'embrocation cream'! Yowser! I started that ride all fired up, that's for sure. Won't make that mistake again!
For my daily commute, never. For longer rides over 2 hours, yes. But I use vaseline. Especially during the summer - Japan's summers are very hot and sweat can be you enemy. Cycling with a sweat filled pad for 4 hours gets very painful without protection. I have even turned around and returned home when I realised I had forgotten to apply! And chamois cream is not so widely available here so vaseline is just right.
Oh My, the mysteries of chamois cream . Proof that No topic is too taboo, You guys Totally Crack Me Up. Thank you for this incredibly important public service. I don't use. However you've got me thinking that I might.
A and D ointment for rides longer than an hour. Use shorts once then wash. Tried using Desitin for a while but it was difficult to clean off in laundry.
Seeing this, made me realize that perhaps I don’t need to also add underwear when I wear my cycling shorts, but I always have. When I rode from San Francisco to Los Angeles, we had regular Butt Balm stops.
I have used it a few times but decided it was not necessary. Maybe if I did multi-day events, but for one days ride all that is needed is clean shorts.
The use of these creams is fine if you can afford to replace the bib shorts regularly. Washing immediately in a hot wash after use is a must with regularly replacing them to avoid bacterial infestation on the padding. So if you are unable to afford regular replacements don't use the cream.
Use coconut oil. It is a liquid when over 20C /72F. If you use organic oil even better. It smells neutral. Just keep some in a small tupperware and apply to your tender personal spots. No need to destroy your expensive shorts. After your ride your skin will haver absorbed it. and your skin will be better than before.... Have I ever lied to you before? Experience reminds me that it works even better when the gentler sex partner applies the oil.
If I know I'm going to be out for more than an hour, then yes, generally I'll put a coat on. I'm a runner as well, and I've never chafed on the bike, but have suffered enough of it on long runs to know it's best avoided at all costs.
No need for expensive creams imo, just a cheap moisturiser is sufficient. Can dispense extra into small plastic bottle for longer rides/wet conditions.
Favourite brand? Lots seem to have menthol in them these days: I find the "cooling" effect deeply uncomfortable. I prefer Elite: no menthol, plus the squeezy tubes mean no danger of double dipping...
No! I do not anymore.. Like you said MATT back in the Big BAD cycling days of the 70s and 80s yes I did. But with today's more hi-tech chamois, it is no longer needed. I think that the cream just closes up pores in the skin and can cause more damage then good. If you are having discomfort as you ride try up grading your bids to a better pair and a better chamois in them.. Do your home work lots of good info on the web on chamois..
Yesterday on the GCN show Dan talked about Peter Sagan spending a week down under in what I hope was meant by Australia and not performing some other act before having sex with his wife and today Matt is asking us if we want to cream. What has GCN become some sort of X rated cycling based dial up line.
Talcum powder. Seriously. Just flour up the old family jewels liberally prior to putting on shorts. Including, crucially, the cracks at the very tops of the legs. Does the job.
Carefull, chamois cream is like crack. I used to never use it, then one day I gave it a go. Now I can't ride without it. It will make you soft and dependent.
I don't use it all the time, but it may be a lifesaver. It did save my life (well you know, my butt...) after a rainy day, after which I had to go on for another week on my bike. So, on multi-day trips/events it's definitely worth it!
I stopped using chamois cream when I no longer used organic chamois. If you think you need "chamois" cream with synthetic seat pads you should probably look at diaper cream instead.
My Donald Trump is of delicate constitution being old and not getting much exercise, so I find a bit of chamois cream to be quite beneficial. It also helps on hot days to punctuate the chammy with 18 holes (front 9 and back 9) to stay cool on the job.
Just out of curiosity what would indicate I’ve used too much? On 2 different rides of 150-160 miles I have essentially had what appears to be friction burns (about 2”wide by 3” long) on the cheeks of my bum. The portion where the sit bones contacts the saddle was fine. On those ride I applied it to the pad itself and my undercarriage. I’ve done these rides before with a different saddle with no problem like burns. Could these burns be evidence of too much cream, a worn out chamois, or a saddle that isn’t right for me. I was fitted for the saddle but I recognize that that might not mean it’s the best saddle for me.
Do you use chamois cream? Let us know!
Just let your clacker toughen like a pair of old leather shoes and your good to go. Why you would want to soften up a part of your body that needs to be callused I`ll never know.
Yeap, since my first 200km ride where i didn't felt my nether regions fro 2 weeks!!!!
Yes, I do. Thanks for asking.
just like the man said, depends on length of ride and weather conditions. And the correct way is to apply it to the chamois so you can see what you are doing. ;-)
yeah I do too, though sometimes I wonder if I just like rubbing my arse (not my "ass" thats a kind of pack horse/donkey thing)
Caught my son putting it in his hair the other day as he thought it was hair gel. I laughed alot.

Presented by Matt because he's the only presenter old enough to have shorts with a leather chamois.
Vegan day
I'm such a hardcore roadie I put chamois cream on every day even if I'm not riding. #DEDICATION
jtl909 most chamois creams have formaldehyde or formaldehyde releaseing agents. You're gonna get butt cancer if you use it that much
I check my tyre pressure even if I'm not going for a ride.
Chamois cream is the best skin creame on market. No more itzy skin.
Disturpin pic that Lloud did there. ”What u doooing”
Anthony Holdway really?? So what should one buy??
Pervert.

It's got many riders scratching ...PAUSE... their heads.
Top notch timing, gave everyone just enough time to think 'their arse'

Steaks were only used if a Tour rider was suffering from a "ruined seat."

With Matt wearing that wool kit, you guys should go and ride L'Eroica 2018 on some properly vintage bikes.
Chafing after ride? Bepanthen (nappy rash creme) - amazing stuff.
"burning question" oh matt...

I use "Dr. Naylor's Udder Balm" each time i ride. The stuff works great; better than all the fancy/over priced creams.
I have used it a few times but decided it was not necessary. Maybe if I did multi-day events, but for one days ride all that is needed is clean shorts.
I live in a hot country. I use chammy cream in the summer to prevent sensitive parts

This guy does a wonderful job as a trainer.
Never used. Never will. If it's getting a bit damp down there, shower and dry direct after the ride. Plus, a good kit helps. Never had a problem 👍

You should do a gcn on mountain bikes and gmbn on road bikes and do challenges
Great video and a good bit of humor. Great job!

Important to check your bike fit if soreness is persistent
I've still got chaffing . wish had used cream
It's painful .
Another interesting question: put on the chamoi or on your skin?
Zsolt Csapó good question I use it directly in the skin. Is better to use it in the clothes...?
Skin on spots that chafe
Bristol Butt’r by John Whittington is the best out there. Contains essential oils which smell good and are a natural antiseptic.
Good Ol' Brizzle!
No need for expensive creams imo, just a cheap moisturiser is sufficient. Can dispense extra into small plastic bottle for longer rides/wet conditions.

Always. Kills bacteria and prevents infected hair follicles/sores.
So much better than the newer video
Crotch-tenderized steak???? 'Taint for me.
Taint is the word! :-D
Yesterday on the GCN show Dan talked about Peter Sagan spending a week down under in what I hope was meant by Australia and not performing some other act before having sex with his wife and today Matt is asking us if we want to cream. What has GCN become some sort of X rated cycling based dial up line.
Agreed - yes and no!
I only use it once a year - 230km mtb race with multiple water crossings - then it works perfectly.
Haha Dan's pose at 3:45 needs to be captioned!
How about calling it the "indiscrete creaming lunge"?
Matt I checked and in 2017 the majority is not 45%! You meant to say the majority uses chamois cream in certain occasions
Tell that to the SNP in 2014
gotta use it in the hot locations where I live in Malta and oz, as you dry out downstairs
Talcum powder. Seriously. Just flour up the old family jewels liberally prior to putting on shorts. Including, crucially, the cracks at the very tops of the legs. Does the job.
Corn starch here. Works way better than cream on synthetic pads, especially in hot weather.
I use aeresol whipped cream with a loooooooong applicator tip for the nooks and crannies
I rode with Matt on Zwift today and as soon as he clipped in, he took 5 minutes, we were all screwed 😌
Carefull, chamois cream is like crack. I used to never use it, then one day I gave it a go. Now I can't ride without it. It will make you soft and dependent.

Back in the eighties I would regularly use petroleum jelly ( Vaseline)
never used it, but will try it next year. I'm curious.
Gcn...how about a video on how to get saddle sores healed!
In My experience, PlanetX bibs needs shammy cream while even random cheap alixpress bibs wont let you develop any issues.
I use petroleum jelly pre ride.. Coz there is no chamois cream for sale in my area
The video should have come with a warning. Cannot unsee Lloydie applying chamois cream.
I stopped using chamois cream when I no longer used organic chamois. If you think you need "chamois" cream with synthetic seat pads you should probably look at diaper cream instead.
Once you get saddle sore, and it doesn't have to be bad, YOU WILL use some sort of barrier cream...for ever.
How do you choose a chamois? There are a few different kinds, what is the best?
It's helpful when you're doing 100+ km rides in baggy shorts with a compression layer underneath
Matt is a comic genius.
My Donald Trump is of delicate constitution being old and not getting much exercise, so I find a bit of chamois cream to be quite beneficial. It also helps on hot days to punctuate the chammy with 18 holes (front 9 and back 9) to stay cool on the job.
Please tell me you were joking about the steak? I use it for longer rides and when I don’t know were the roads will take me.
What's in it? I've got way sensitive skin and probably have to substitute hypoallergenic prescription stuff
Beginner's Q- why don't they put the padding on the seat?
I have my wife apply it to me but for some reason I am always late starting my ride
I’m surprised Matt managed to screw on the lid of the chamois cream first time... A better success rate than clipping in!
A and D ointment. If it is good enough for a babys rash it is good enough for me
How about answering 1. How much to apply? and 2. To apply to skin, chamois pad, or both?
Personal preference Joshua on point 2 - and you'll know if you've used too much!
You forgot to mention that it's good to clean your shorts/pad (occasionally) when using chamois cream.
EVERY DAY!
Well, now I understand why it's called a chamois!
No , you should use Infinity bike seat instead
I'd rather the steak be tenderized than my...you know...
Why would one not use the cream? What is the down side?
I’ve use Carbon Paste
