I live in the southern Caribbean. Every ride is a hot and sweaty ride! I've always used good ol' Vaseline, and it's work well so far. If it ain't broke, don't fix it....
I used it when I started because you're "supposed to" then forgot it one day and realised that I didn't actually need it. I think many who use it could be better off getting their saddle sorted or smaller shorts as you mentioned, which I leaned the hard way on a rental in Cornwall... I ended up behind bushes reapplying it desperately every hour 🤣🤣🤣
I’ve never suffered from chaffing before but I did the outlaw half last Sunday and suffered most of the way round on the bike. I’ll definitely be investing in some chamois cream from now.
I'm new to all this peddle peddle peddle stuff . I spent a two or three months on an old mountain bike that was too small for me doing 30 miles rides almost daily before I picked up my road bike . I had been wearing crivit cycling shorts and had my saddle adjusted right but I was not at my own house on Saturday and just took my new road bike for a ride 32 1/2 miles with just beach shorts with mesh lyning with boxer shorts underneat I had not adjusted the saddle perfectly either . It was very uncomfortable no chafing it just felt bad . Today after proper saddle adjustment and my cycling shorts on it was perfect . I had never even ridden a road bike before . My hands felt a bit numb twords the end running 100psi I would love a sprung bar stem . A friend has a red shift shock stop stem @ over 100 quid it's expensive I think but I will probably buy one as I'm at this for life now . I need the full kit now proper saddle bag to stash my rain jacket that's coming from lighting in a box and clip less shoes and peddles a work stand and all I don't even have a helmet yet .I have a black burn pump spare tube and tyre leavers in a tiny saddle post pouch and two bottle racks . I use the Strava app to track my progress . I am burning off the stress and losing weight I can't even be bothered riding my motorcycle . I will again but only for long days touring after the lockdown ends . I love your channel Katie it's a huge help to me thank you .
Used to have to use it when shorts had real chamois pads otherwise it was like riding on hardboard. These days Conotrane Cream, which is for nappy rash but works well on the precious parts. :)
Oof, tried menthol/mint shower gel on 'myself' once and swelled up down there for about three days. The men's versions tend to have menthol in, whereas the women's versions don't. Assos also do a female-friendly version which I'm going to give a go.
Never even contemplated using it, but after 40 years in the (several) saddles guess my undercarriage is probably grade A leather anyway. But if it works for you then why change this approach to another which might not, errm , sit well.
Yeah, as the name implies, it's cream for your chamois, not really to be applied directly to your skin. Rub it in to the chamois and you'll be fine. It derived from the days where chamois were made from actual Chamois (yes, the animals - basically it was the skin of a Chamois - side note: obviously chamois in shorts aren't made from that particular material anymore!) - as with any leather, it would dry out over time as the natural oils wore away. The cream was used to make the leather soft and supple again. These days it's formulated more to prevent irritation on longer rides. Some people swear by it, some people swear at it - horses for courses.
There’s a whole bunch of other benefits to that one in particular, assos, antibacterial is a huge one! It has natural elements in it, it’s a virtual who is who in the homeopathic playbook. It’s not all just about chaffing, Preventing saddle sores, experience speaking loudly here is the most compelling case to use this every single time.
Where that part meets the other is/was called 'the lisk'. I used to hear the elderly describe it as such. Thumbs up for your vids. Always containing informative views.
hmmm never use that .... yes i got skin problems in butt area especially in seat bones area does it make skin softer ? is it good for veins under skin ?
Just as Katie announces ‘Today’s video is about chamois cream’ the mrs walks into the room. ‘Oh my god, I’ll leave you to it’ she says. Can’t quite understand why she didn’t stick around 😂
When I was jogging a lot I used Body Glide on the thighs. I rinse my (Garneau) bib shorts just in cold water after a cycle as per clothing instructions.
thanks for the vid, wondering a short question as you did consecutive day longer rides, im planing 1000km bikepaking ride and was wondering how much should I carry considering thinking to do around the trip on 5 days, do you think 140ml from assos is to much maybe, or better carry a 100ml tube maybe? as in going ultralight gear and don't want to carry more weight as its necessary
I've thus far not needed Chamois creams, nor a bike fit, but thus far, getting the saddle right, and the right sized bike. as i'ma MTBer with gravel/cx bike as well, so tend to base rides on time rather than distance as the terrain makes a huge difference. Equally i tend to be out of the saddle a fair bit, which I guess reduces pressure rubbing, though to be honest doesn't seem to happen any way.
Katie Kookaburra I did have to alter the commute bike as my commute jumped from 3 to 12 miles and since it’s fairly flat I don’t change position much if at all. But that was mainly some ergo grips, though in fairness that’s most due to a ongoing nerve injury, in my right hand, left hand wasn’t bothered. I commute in civies since I have no changing facilities which is fine just need to take it easy which is fine. With saddles try them, I seem to be a middle of the road, ie Mid level padding, the lightly padded race saddles aren’t wildly comfortable on say hire bikes etc, nor the squishy things on City hire bikes.
Never needed it but do need a minimal chamois in my shorts to prevent friction on the saddle. When my lady friend went on a 200 mile hike with me, she had rubbing on the rear cheeks and sweat. She was in agony till I popped into a LBS and bought her some chamois cream. Then she powered walk the rest of the 100 miles with me trailing behind lol.
Katie Kookaburra just a joke me and a mate always say lol. Coming from mountain biking, it took a while to get used to wearing skimpy lycra and applying cream etc all feels a bit deviant now I'm middle aged, I try not to hang about outside my front door too long either 😂😂😂
Just bought a new road bike to get fit. I wonder if chamois cream would help me with removing the narrow road bike seat from my ass? Ij can't ever imagine getting comfortable on this thing.
I've just received my first ever road bike (from Ribble) at the age of 52 years and 11 months! MEN STOP READING NOW!!! As a woman of a certain age, there's enough going on down there to worry about so I'm hoping this stuff is the answer to all my prayers ;-) I've just ordered some so fingers crossed......
I actually really like Slipstream now. It’s on Amazon and super cheap!! Vegan, and made of aloe Vera so defo give that a try. Best one I’ve ever used!!
Just watched your VLOG on chamois cream. I’ve never needed to use it, until a 55 mike ride today when I sensed chafing. Oh well, here’s to my next cycling purchase. At least I know how to use it now. 😬
I was curious where you put it on. You where ashamed to name it. You could have used a doll or Teddybär to show it or just name the regions in your language… I tried it out cause I bought heaps of stuff at the Assos store and they gave me a big container as a gift. It feels good and numb down there. That’s why I think people use it regularly. And that’s the point I won’t use it. It’s kind of an addiction or a must have feeling. Like coffee or tea in the morning. I don’t need that either. I’m just watching the whole world being addicted to Coffein. I do 300k plus a week and as you said I have great fitting and fitted bike and a luxury leather saddle. Why I should numb my butt then. The Creme is not cheap at all and as I said I liked the feeling but I do not want to get used to it.
I started using chamois cream ab out a year ago and now I use it on every ride, including indoor sessions.
I live in the southern Caribbean. Every ride is a hot and sweaty ride! I've always used good ol' Vaseline, and it's work well so far. If it ain't broke, don't fix it....
I do on every ride as I'm usually led by my legs so ride could be 1hour or 7 depending on feel. Being retired has benefits
Short rides = anything up to 100k ... you legend! Helpful video, thanks for making.
I didn’t mean that to come across as it did haha, just got my sights set on 600km hah :)
It actually came over just fine, you are the most modest youtuber I know of, as well as making star video after star video.
Lol I was thinking the same, 100k is my life goal 😂
I heard that as 100,000 not 100 km. I was ... uh ... what?!
i know Im kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good place to stream newly released series online?
I never ride without it, irrespective of the time or distance and only use Assos, even on a Watt-bike session. The Muc-off one is also very good!!
Haha that sounds painful!!! :)
That is addressed in the video (@4:10) but thats for your input though
I suppose this cream is good for men. I’m looking for something to prevent the cowboy walking effect after long rides.
I really like Slipstream. You can get it on Amazon. I prefer it way more to the Assos stuff now.
Docs Chamois Cream. Highly recommended. Does not have the mint/menthol effect which all the European ones have.
As a suffer of the odd bout of saddle sore its an absolute must if you ride for any serious amount of time! sudocrem does the trick too.
I’ve never suffered from chaffing before but I did the outlaw half last Sunday and suffered most of the way round on the bike. I’ll definitely be investing in some chamois cream from now.
Florida. I use it just to load the bike up on the car.

What about bacterial infection? does it really help to avoid having small cysts in the inguinal area?
Oof, tried menthol/mint shower gel on 'myself' once and swelled up down there for about three days. The men's versions tend to have menthol in, whereas the women's versions don't. Assos also do a female-friendly version which I'm going to give a go.

Grade A leather hahahahaha!!!
I have 'kevlar' balls

I might be wrong but I think there are different formulas for ladies compared with men ? Or something in some creams that are not ‘compatible’ ?
Yeah, the men's version tends to have menthol in - not something you want to put on your crown jewels if you're female!
That was it, although Katie seemed to suggest it gives her an extra joosh ! :)
I started using it recently. How long do i let it absorb into the chammie before I put on my bib?
I don’t wait :)
Good answer seeing as that's what I've been doing!
My wife uses a product wonderfully named Hoo-ha glide!
Is she a US Ranger?
@@afrocentricalbion lol
I did a 285k ride in one day a few days ago and i believe it is necessary indeed. I will invest in it and see what it does/does not.
Is it OK to borrow from others to test it out of is that an unacceptable double dip risk? 🤓
After 75 mile rides or more is is great pain for me!! Take 2 or 3 days off i am good as new. Really a bad distraction for one of the loves of my life.
Where that part meets the other is/was called 'the lisk'.
I used to hear the elderly describe it as such.
Thumbs up for your vids. Always containing informative views.
Thanks Stephen. The Lisk?? Ooh that's a new one to me but will Google :)
hmmm never use that .... yes i got skin problems in butt area especially in seat bones area

I think sit bone problems is more to do with your saddle and its set up.
Just as Katie announces ‘Today’s video is about chamois cream’ the mrs walks into the room. ‘Oh my god, I’ll leave you to it’ she says. Can’t quite understand why she didn’t stick around 😂
Ahahahaa I love that! :) That's actually made me laugh. Ahhh there are far worse things on the internet you could be watching!
Most German use Melkfett since decades... 😉
Thanks for this, I've really been wondering about this!!!!
Glad it helped :)

The Perineum - the 'bit where your legs meet'. ;-)
That's your 'Taint', cause it ain't your arse and ain't your .....you get the idea.
Do you have a brand you could recommend?
My fave one is called SlipStream - you can get it on Amazon. It's by far the best one I've ever used!
@@KatieKookaburra thank you x

Roger you're a very lucky man! A lot of roadies have saddle, back trouble or chafing. :)

Hot days, rainy days - where I live here it is usually hot, if it is not, it is rainy...
Lol the cream really isn't selling me out of my jeans.
North Texas. Creme, lotion, lip balm, anything..... It's absolutely necessary.
Never needed it but do need a minimal chamois in my shorts to prevent friction on the saddle.

Moisture in the bib... Love it
What brand is that? I assume it’s vegan
Best one I've used is Slipstream... vegan, organic and really good ingredients. www.amazon.co.uk/Slipstream-Anti-Chafe-Cream/dp/B075XQ957R
No double dipping!!! 😉✊🐹🤗
DEFINITELY NOT! The first time I EVER used any was from my friend James and he made it VERY clear not to do that haha.
Katie Kookaburra just a joke me and a mate always say lol. Coming from mountain biking, it took a while to get used to wearing skimpy lycra and applying cream etc all feels a bit deviant now I'm middle aged, I try not to hang about outside my front door too long either 😂😂😂

It might not be set up properly or just not the right shape for you. Just try a few others or go and get a bike fit :)
good info but i wish you would have put it on an actual chamois or at least point out how big of an are it needs.
Varies depending on brand. I use Slipstream now and you need hardly any of that. This Assos one you need much more
My focal point on my legs is on the bend between the bum and the leg, that's where it rubs the most.
I started using chamois ("sha-moh-ah", not "sha-mi" !) cream last Summer: I agree, it helps a lot on very long and/or very hot sweaty rides.
"Sha-moh-ah"? Literally never heard anyone ever pronounce it like that!
It's a French word. I'm French.
Chamois when pronounced "Sha-moh-ah" is a French word. When pronounced "shammy" it's an English word.

I've never used it at all
I use Vaseline. Its cheap and lasts for long rides.
Really???
Yes Katie its good stuff and works fine especially on the turbo. Cost a fortune to use chammy cream all the time.
Well considering Vaseline is used to soften and moisten the skin it makes sense .
We used vaseline to fight chafing long before specialized products came along.
I went out and did 100 miles on a hot day and drew blood. Just about healed now.
Ohh gawwwwwd!!! Hope you’re ok now! I use Slipstream it’s bloody brilliant stuff.
@@KatieKookaburra brilliant I'll give it a go thank you. P.s yep all healed just did quik 20 miles to test 😊

That tingling feeling........🤣
Big Mitch 😂😂😂
I'll find any excuse to use it! I love to feel the wind between my legs!
Chamois it spelled in French. It is not "shammy"...
Yeah I know my French accent isn’t up to scratch 😂
All the time for me, even for walking.
My tip.....Slap it on good & thick..............Cheers KK
bum butter is best
So if it's gonna be long, hot and wet, use chamois cream. 🤠👍
