    On the desperation front, you could have also added the desperation of a GM to keep his job with a big splash pick. While Ryan Pace was no stranger to trading up in the draft to get his guy (while mortgaging the future), his desire to make a big splash pick with Justin Fields in the hopes of saving his job has likely set the franchise back in any rebuilding effort for another year or more. And he lost his job anyway because rookie quarterbacks can't turn around a franchise on their own.

    Yeah you never draft a running back in the 1st round anymore. Unless you're in this situation like the Pittsburgh Steelers were last year. They had the 24th overall pick so not that great of a first round draft pick. Your need for running back is the absolute biggest need. And when it's your turn to pick and the absolute best running back coming out of college is available then go ahead and use that 24th overall pic on a running back. It worked out great for the steelers he ran for over 1200 yd not behind the best online remind you and it looks like hes got a good long promising career.

    I'd say the best philosophy is draft the player that fills your biggest need without reaching. If you can get him later, it's always fine to trade back, especially if it's a position other teams behind you might not need. And when in doubt between two guys of seemingly equal talent/value, always pick the local guy, especially if he says he grew up with your team as his favorite. You're much more likely to get that guy's 110% effort every week, and if you snub him, he's likely going to make it his personal mission to wreck your week.

      Except the Goedert one is a myth. It sounds so sensible (Dallas did indeed just lose Witten, and the name thing even) that a bunch of people bought the claim when it was thrown out there on social media, but the Cowboys were already in the process of reaching out to the guy they were taking and were all excited about it on their war room camera. The team's need at LG was also bigger than any need at TE to boot - but I can't blame anyone for being excited about something that makes it look like the Cowboys got screwed over, true or otherwise.

  • @bioLarzen

    Great piece.
    The only one I'm not necessarily 100% on board with is never to draft a punter - I don't see the big risk in spending a very late 6th or 7th round one on a guy who has a great college tape. The 7th round is a total crapshoot anyway, those guys have way bigger chance never to become more than PS guys than to be actual game contributors... why not a punter then (assuming you have a specific guy in your mind who you think has what it takes to be a good NFL punter)?
    On the other hand I am 200% behind the caveat regarding workout warriors. This is why I'm so not OK seeing my team getting Jordan Davis in a lot of mocks... (luckily, those mocks are not made by those who actually decide on the picks...)

    Playing devils advocate:
    Jury still out on a the running backs being taken round 1 (depends on the draft class), special teams wins/loses games so drafting a punter isn’t a bad decision as long as it’s not in the first 3 rounds, we’ll see about the rivalry thing after this years Draft (looking at you Vikings).
    Keep up the amazing videos dude!

      @@12jswilson explain?

    • @12jswilson
      @12jswilson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pubsportstalk9681 running backs are mostly a product of their environments with the largest injury risks and the shortest careers. Therefore, you should focus your resources on positions that actually correlate to winning football games that you don't have to worry as much about whether they'll be able to play 17 games a year or if they'll be washed before their rookie contract is up.
      Punter is even more self explanatory. It's the least valuable position except for the long snapper. In addition, there's very little variability in the NFL between the best and worst punter. Even if there was, punter's draft position has no correlation with how good they'll be. A punter taken in the 4th round has the same exact expected outcome of one that goes undrafted, but makes the team.
      So yeah, two really easy rules to follow. Don't draft a running back in the first round and don't draft any kicker, punter, or long snapper period.

    • @pubsportstalk9681
      @pubsportstalk9681 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@12jswilson you gotta have a balanced offense. So if you can snag a zeke, C2k, beast mode, LT, etc for a rookie contact and you already have weapons for an air attack then it’s a no brainier to go RB. Especially before they hit the market after a breakout season. I agree it depends on the environment and even more so the draft class (which is what I said to start)
      Punter is agree to disagree. Field position is key for most NFL teams unless you’re playing the AFC. If the draft class is weak like this year than it makes since to secure a top punter instead of a practice squad.
