    I think it’s because the NFL has become much more of a team sport.
    Winning the MVP means the team overwhelmingly revolves around that one player. This is often more indicative of a weakness that can be exploited in the playoffs than a strength.
    The team-centered approach means that less attention goes to one player, and the team may not even win as many regular-season games, but they will make a bigger splash in the playoffs with a multidimensional approach to the game.

    • @steveoltjenbruns2366
      @steveoltjenbruns2366 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The NFL has always been a team sport. And teams that find continued success have always known that and always had team centric philosophies. It’s nothing new. Meanwhile teams that lean too heavily on specific individuals usually fail.

      @Eli Benda you can say that about the first one besides the fact that he was clutch and came through for them. The team was 5-13 before he took over. The only time they lost faith in him was the Steelers AFCCG but he got injured anyways.

    Side Note: There kinda is a Defensive Player of the Year curse, sure we don't have to go that far back in time to see the last player to win both DPOY and a SB (James Harrison 2008 season) but since Harrison, 0 Players have won the award and won a SB in the same season.
    Another thing that should be noted was that Cooper Kupp did break the Offensive Player of the Year curse when he won SB 56. Before Kupp, the last player to win both OPOY and the SB was Marshall Faulk from the 1999 season.

    I always joked that in 2011 Peyton Manning should have won MVP despite being injured and not playing because clearly he was the team’s most valuable player.
    Before 2011, Manning led the Colts to 10+ wins 9 straight seasons (and averaged 12+ wins). In 2011 without Manning, Colts went 2-14.
    Meanwhile, before 2012, the Broncos didn’t have a winning season for 5 straight years and didn’t have a 10+ win season for 6 straight years. Then Manning shows up and they go 13-3 for 2 seasons and 12-4 for 2 seasons.

    Hot take: MVP Awards are popularity contests. They aren’t very useful for judging the best player in the league from year to year because the criteria for selecting the MVP is highly biased.

    • @ThePhoenix1
      @ThePhoenix1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      hell no. if anything pro bowls are popularity contests. mvps though you cant just get voted on with a garbage or mid season. the problem with the mvp though is that its a qb award. barely any other position wins it. so they should have opoty be exclusive to wrs and rbs, while mvp is exclusively qbs, since it basically is already.

  • @turbokart3776
    @turbokart3776 2 ปีที่แล้ว +131

    The thing with this "MVP curse" is that there is actually a logical reason for it happening. The most valuable player is usually the guy who is carrying his team through the regular season. In essence, you don't really want to win MVP, as it typically means that the team around you isn't particularly great, and your team will fall in the postseason if you aren't amazing every play. Look at Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers for examples of this playing out.

      Different Sports have different MVP Curses I've noticed:
      NFL: As mentioned, no player has won MVP and Super Bowl in the same season in the 21st century. Not only that, but quite a few have made it to the super bowl that year only to suffer an unlucky loss (brady 18-1, manning pick 6 vs his hometown saints, and 28-3 are the main examples I can think of)
      MLB: MVP's have had much better luck winning world series, as in the last decade, 4 have gone on to win WS in the same season (Buster Posey '12, Kris Bryant '16, J*se Alt*ve ****17******, Mookie Betts '18), including 3 in a row. Also cody bellinger won MVP in '19, dodgers won in '20; freddie freeman MVP in '20, braves won in '21. So by that logic, I guess the angels are winning it all this year because ohtani was MVP last year. I can't believe I just wrote that.
      NBA: last MVP and champ in the same season was steph in 2015. What I did notice is that giannis won MVP in '19 and '20, lost in the playoffs both years, and finally won champ in '21 despite no MVP. So if jokic wins another MVP this year, then the nuggets are 2023 champs.
      NHL: Weird that MSL was the last MVP and champ in the same season. What I've also noticed is that no stanley cup champion even had a single player win a major award in the same year since Tim Thomas won the vezina in 2011 when he led the bruins to the cup. But that's all gonna change when vezina and hart trophy winner igor shesterkin leads the rangers to the stanley cup this year!

    I don’t think it’s a curse more than just really hard. Like you said, the MVP isn’t always from the best team. I think it would be more interesting to figure out why in the 80’s and 90’s so many MVPs went on to win the Super Bowl.
    There were 3 in the 80’s and 5 in the 90’s. But from 66-79 there were only 2. And of the 8 MVP winners in the 80’s and 90’s, only 4 were QB. Moseley from the Redskins won MVP and a SB as a KICKER! Talk about a feat that will probably never been seen again!!
    I think one major issue is this QB love. Since 2000, only 4 non-QB players have won MVP (and those 4 were RBs). And I get it, offense wins games and your QB is your General. And Generals are the ones getting praised for winning wars. People aren’t like “sure, General Schwarzkopf was great, but did you see that First Class Airman land a plane safely once?”

    Fun fact about that year Wentz should have won the MVP... Brady *also* missed games that season, a certain 4-game suspension for cheating. But, he was still playing when the votes were counted, where Wentz wasn't... which would've completed the curse anyway, since had Wentz won MVP... he still didn't win the Super Bowl that year, Foles did, so I'd still count it towards the curse.

    I will say this, if the fates were a tad kinder I believe this should’ve been different twice. First the most tangible, I think Brees should’ve won MVP in 2009, he put up equal numbers to Payton on better accuracy, with an amazing completion % better then Mannings, and simply put more efficiency in my eyes. If he had won MVP that season and then the super bowl this would be different, we also gotta remember if Carson never got hurt the Eagles still probably win the super bowl, Atlanta and Minnesota were games where the other teams did more to kill themselves then the Eagles did in beating them, and I think that horrific defensive performance that we saw from the Pats in 2017 in that super bowl should’ve been easy to beat for an MVP Wentz.

  • @BroadswordMedia
    @BroadswordMedia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly I don't know when is the next time the league MVP will win the Super bowl. And again to be honest I haven't really been paying as much attention to sports at all lately compared to what I used to, I just happened to be aware of some things here and there now. I do think maybe just maybe that is if the team around him can use to improve, Joe Burrow could be the next MVP to win the Super Bowl at some point. I think at some point the salary cap is going to hit the Chiefs really hard which is why I'm not saying it will be Patrick Mahomes.
