      Tell me about it. Though it has to said, that buying a cool new guitar can in fact help you play better in a way, because it encourages you to play more, for a while at least, until the novelty wears off, and then you have to go buy a new one. An idea I've had recently, that I think I'm going to try out, is to buy a new guitar that I like, and then after a couple of months, once the new guitar euphoria has faded, advertise it for sale for maybe 80 to 90% of what I paid, no rush really to sell, but when it does, simply buy a new one of whatever different model I fancy trying out, and rinse and repeat. I reckon it should work out pretty well. That way you can carry on trying out cool new guitars indefinitely, always with a new awesome axe to rock. I just have to find the initial capital to get started.

    • @stephenpendegraph7209
      @stephenpendegraph7209 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same. I realized also the way you play both guitars seem way different to me. Just watching you tubers and pros in videos play so different depending on if it's a strat or a les Paul. Is that what's happening or am I crazy?

    • @stephenpendegraph7209
      @stephenpendegraph7209 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also to reply. I bought a Mexican strat because of some songs I really like that used a strat but I cannot get that thing to sound good or right. Even after setup and string swaps. I also believe it's becuase I'm not able to play the way a strat needs to be played to sound good. Also is that me or am I crazy haha . I learned and started on a les Paul if that helps..

      The Strat has more treble, but less bass than the Les Paul. The Les Paul has that thick bassy crunchy tone. I like the Les paul more, I just wish they weren't so heavy.

      @@chuy8356, thank you for that clarification. It makes sense. I listen to Tool, and Adam uses a LP, and that describes his tone well. I've always been more of a fan of the Les Paul design just simply from a looks standpoint. And I'm also more of a fan of playing more doom metal, down-tuned songs, so the Les Paul is generally has a slightly more preferred sound for that style. Though obviously kind of negligible since you can obviously still get a pretty similar sound with a Strat, especially with additional effects. That Les Paul design just never gets old lmao.

      Actually i own both and i play the epiphone les pauls more than i play my Gibson les paul. I have a 2010 Gibson les paul studio, and looking at the specs of the Epiphone les paul traditional pro i have they are identical, same mahogany body, carved top and set neck... even the same pickups. Gibson bought epiphone in 1957 Les Paul told Gibson they needed to buy epiphone, he said because "even though he is a gibson man, he has always been an epiphone man." and Gibson listened. they maintained the quality that epiphone already built into their guitars and since 2010 Gibson has ramped up the epiphone les paul and today it is basically a Gibson les paul just a little cheaper (around 600-800 for a great one) don't count the epiphone les pauls out yet.

    Hi Darrell, nice video. I speak from experience and started playing guitar in 1975. My first guitar was an SG. I loved it. But like every rock guitarist/enthusiast back then who loved Led Zeppelin, I bought a Les Paul. After having a career in the US Navy, I took up guitar again and tried every style solid body and hollow body electric guitar available in Guitar Center, LP's, SG's, Teles, strats, Ibanez, Jackson, Fender, Squier, Epiphone, Gibson, PRS, Schecter, etc. The first ingredient was finding the perfect feeling neck for my left hand. Then a guitar that fit comfortably to my body without a head stock dive. Then weight and tremolo bar. Much to my surprise, teles and LP's felt like a large block of wood like a kitchen cutting board and wasn't comfortable at all. That meant only guitars with a contoured body. Hence, I settled for stratocasters because of contour body, perfect neck, and tremolo bridge assembly. They were the most comfortable and their necks were perfect in my hand - Modern "C". I settled for Fenders and Squiers. Schecter and PRS were a close second. So I sold everything else and settled on Fender strats. Also, the beauty of strats is the after market options available appears to be unlimited. What I recommend to guitarists is go to a Guitar Center store as they have a 45 day full refund grace period. So you can really test everything your heart desires without forking out and $ in the end until you actually buy one for keeps. The search for the perfect guitar is a personal journey. Also, the lower end models like Squier and Epiphone are very well made and one shouldn't feel the need to fork out $3000-5000 for a Gibson Les Paul unless you absolutely must have it. I have several Fender strats and my favorite playing and sounding strat is a Squier Standard which they don't make anymore. Who knew? Forget the name on the headstock, put the ego aside and try everything.

    Learned and played on a Strat for 6 years then transitioned to a Les Paul just recently. I have rather weak and small hands so even after building up strength in my left hand for years the long scale length of the Strat just wasnt ideal for me especially in longer sessions especially since I was also switching from a rhythm player to a full time lead player, but was still a great workhorse guitar. All that strength build up from the Strat did wonders for me when I transitioned to a Les Paul. With the shorter scale I was able to vibrato, bend and overall play my techniques like never before.
    Having both is really handy when you're a regularly writing and recording like myself but if you want my take, I say go for the Strat if you want to be more of a rhythmic player playing a lot of chords, strumming and funky songs and if you have the finger strength unlike myself you can very much play lead on it. If you want to have more control over the fingerboard and play more expressively (minus the whammy bar) then I say go for the Les Paul.
    Either one is great but it all boils down to what you want to play on and which guitar fits the budget better.

    • @ItsRyan265

      I wouldn't call it "fuller." It's because of the clarity of those higher frequencies that it serves well in cutting through the mix. I do believe though that it is a better soloing instrument since it is much more articulate.

      When people say it’s “fuller” they’re talking about how the humbucker gives a lot of mids, which enhances the presence of most audible notes to the human ear, that’s why the sound feels thicker. The Strat’s single coils cannot give all those mids, they focus on brighter notes, however that also makes it a naturally better guitar for lead playing and blues (as Hendrix himself proved it to be).

    I always played semihollow models, ES335-like or Gretsch-like guitars. I love the feel of Gibson body style and humbucker sound. But man, when I played on a Tele I fell in love instantly. Fender neck is so good, and single coil sound is so sweet.
    Nowadays my 2 mains guitars are a Parker strat-like and a Giannini electric Craviola.

    Every Strat I’ve played sound very similar, apart from if you have a rosewood or maple fretboard. I own 4 Les Pauls with 4 very individual sounds due to the Pickups. They go from Warm to Aggressive to ‘Modern Clean’ to Metal, so I would say there isn’t just a typical Les Paul Tone.
    But generally a Strat and Paul bookend all other guitars in sound range.

    My personal opinion is that the right guitar for someone is the guitar that one can afford, plays well, sounds great, and has eye appeal for the owner. I think that sometimes guitar players get caught up in the sound of different guitars and think they need the 'right' guitar for the 'perfect' sound when covering a song. But I personally think that in a blind test one has a very difficult time telling one guitar from the next especially with gain etc. and since some Strats come with both single coils and humbuckers and some Les Pauls have coil split. If one is rich and can afford the price of a high end Gibson Les Paul or Fender Stratocaster (or Paul Reed Smith etc.) and likes the guitar that's fine. But I've heard some high end guitars that I didn't think really sounded much better than some $300.00 guitars. I also sometimes think that guitar players are so caught up in their own concern over sound that they forget that, when gigging, most people that are listening have no clue and couldn't care less about what guitar is being played; so all of that 'fine tuning' of sound goes right out the window except for one's own satisfaction which may be more psychological than sound.

    • @jgrossma
      @jgrossma 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +1. I'll add that guitar quality has improved tremendously over the last 20 years (let alone 60). CNC machining has greatly reduced the cost of consistent manufacture, and there are inexpensive Asian-made guitars out there that are actually fantastic instruments on their own merits. You certainly can if you choose to, but you just don't "have" to spend thousands of dollars to get an instrument that sounds, looks, and plays great nowadays.

      Basically Les Pauls aren't just heavier in weight, they can handle more distortion so if you play heavier rock or metal you'll be better of with a Les Paul. That being said, both guitars are incredibly versatile so it's really up to preference. If you prefer something crisper and brighter go for a Strat, if you prefer a warmer and fatter sound then you should get a Les Paul. If you wanna be really versatile then get both. If in doubt, see what the guitarists from your favourite bands play. If there's a particular guitar player that you wanna sound like, get a guitar like theirs. And don't forget that there are so many more guitars out there than just Strats and Les Pauls. Telecasters and SGs are also very popular (designed by Fender and Gibson, respectively). I would advise that you always try a guitar before you buy it, unless you're buying from a website with a good returns policy or QC. Most importantly, get a guitar you love, and that you love playing. The more you like your guitar, the more you're gonna play it and the better you'll be. Personally, I think Les Pauls look a lot nicer than Strats, but it's all down to what you like. There's no right answer. Hope I helped.

      If you want a blues type sound or a low gain classic rock, go with the Strat. They are great fro solos and licks. If you want more chunk or grunge and heavier distortion in your riffs, go for a Les Paul. Still good at solos, but more for just jamming out on than intricate playing. I've played a Strat and it's not my personal cup of tea. I played a Les Paul one time and was hooked on it. It just felt right for my play style.
      Best bet is to go to a place that has them, try em out, and decide that way. Plus these demo videos aren't the best for getting an idea of how a guitar sounds as each player has their own feel when playing and will not sound like everyone else, and each guitar has a different tone to it depending on the piece of wood it was carved from and how well the winding in the pickups are done.
