For me, the Strat seemed like an obvious choice when playing in the stores. The pickups were clearer, the neck more comfortable, and the tonal differences seemed more vast. Just picked up my first les paul a couple weeks ago after making that decision, and for me I love it. It sells hard rock tones so much better, it just has enough character that it makes everything feel and sound confident. I love both, and I regularly use both. But for writing and practicing I use my Paul now
I think that the Les Paul is better. the Stratocaster sounds awsome but the Les Paul had some little bass that change the sound and it sounds amazing. Marty Music I love your channal and your lessons cause you are the best Marty ! keep doing your great job man !
Marty always provides his audience something great to learn or review. I own both a Les Paul Custom and a 2004 American Strat Anniversary. I almost never pick up my Les Paul anymore unless I want to play loud heavy distorted stuff and shred using the bridge pick up position. Yes, it is powerful fat balanced tone. For me the Stratocaster feels like I'm on an endless journey of finding tones and sounds that the Les Paul just can't do. With the S-1 switching and tremolo, the possibilities feel endless. No doubt the Strat hardly ever goes out of tune no matter what I do. Way more comfortable weight wise and ergonomically. Honestly, as fat as the Les Paul sounds with distortion etc., the Strat really holds it's own and I actually like how I can shape the distorted sounds more with the Strat. There was a time for me when nothing beat a Les Paul, but no longer feel that way.
magic2506 this comment is very helpful because I’m deciding on what to get so I was just wondering if on the strat can you still make it sound like a les Paul with all the distortion or is that the main difference between them
Love my MIM Stratocaster! Bought it used at a Pawn Shop in 2017 for just $360! Incredible bargain! It plays amazing! Hope to get a Gibson Les Paul someday. Will be awesome to have both!
I went to the store looking for a Strat, but came out with a LP. It's my first electric guitar, but I played acoustic before, so the shape of the LP just felt wayyyyyy better. That's all I have to say.
That's not bad for someone who's a newbie. The lp is a very basic guitar, doesn't get more basic than that. I also have one acoustic guitar, sun burst, looks like a $30,000 paul.
@@biromancer1766 I've always wanted a les paul but i didn't get the chance to get it because the les paul is like double the price of a stratocaster so i sticked with the strat.. And lemme tell you i fuckin fell in love with the tone with looks and the shape and with the Feel you can make it sound like any other guitars and you can easily upgrade it mine is kinda turning into a super strat From all the modifications I've done
As with many guitar players, I also own a Strat and Les Paul. They are obviously distinctly different sounds, but there are so many other factors, such as pickup position, guitar volume and tone, as well as the amp and settings. A good video. Thanks for sharing.
When you start on acoustic you don’t care how a guitar feels. It’s all about sound. Used to be more of a Tele guy, now I prefer a Strat. One thing is for sure: the Fender sound is the way to go.
I’ve been a Strat guy for some years but I find myself shifting towards the Les Paul nowadays. I’m more of a Neil Young style guy than a Jimi Hendrix. Hard rock than blues.
Whoa. I don't think I've ever seen a test like this, where they play the same thing through both guitars. Everybody usually plays different stuff through each one so you don't get a fair comparison. I think I like the Strat better. Didn't expect that. It's not as 'muddy' as the Gibson. More defined.
Or you just pay a professional to repair the break. I had a major neck break repaired in 2007 for just £45 ($57 at today's exchange rate or $88 in 2007).
Ethan Knudtson learn your facts before you speak of you steam the les Paul's glue on the neck it will come off then you can replace it quite easy and their really tuff I bang mine around hit the headstock all the time and no problems at all
me taking Marty´s beginner lessons, stranded away to watch some end game stuff, realizing that at the moment I could not tell a difference between LP or Strat from an ironing board with 6 strings, going back to drilling the minor pentatonics. Thanks Marty, your videos really help, big time, I can´t wait to be able to talk with other people about which guitar fits better for what. ♥
I would prefer the strat but nothing beats that Gibson tone. I prefer the ESP LTD EC-1000 VB (basically a Les Paul shape, with EMG active pickups and black and gold accents)
Carlos Aponte love the tone of that esp but I hate single cut guitars, i play lead so tons of solos and I usually have my thumb on top of the neck so I only play guitars with two cutaways. my main guitar is the gibson sg
I Wear A Fez Now I can see why you don't like it, but I play rhythm when I actually do play guitar (I play bass first and foremost, a Fender P-Bass) do I don't have that problem
les paul, no question. Thicker , warm and better sound. strats are good for a clean sound and good feel , that's it. anyone who knows guitars knows this
i love both my fender strat (mex) and Gibson Explorer equally, though i tend to use my explorer more mostly cause i play lots of rock hard rock and metal stuff and because it has rosewood which is feeling so nice, I WOULD NEVER get rid of my fender strat! i use it mostly for the blues as MArty hints at but also into more funkly soul stuff such as Red Hot Chilli peppers and even for some alternativ rock like JAck white and The White Stripes
platoriam I love Stratocasters. I have a 1995 Fender American Standard Stratocaster and it is an absolutely beautiful guitar. It has a lovely smooth, clear tone and is great for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix stuff!
rcampbell25 actually, strat sounds cleaner, more acoustic, i might add, LP is kind of a rock figure. and its humbuckers (guess too wild for me.) but put p90s in that baby, sounds marvelous i tell you.
I feel like Stratocasters were made popular because of the shape. But it picked up more attention when the Romantics used it in some of their music videos
As a Strat player, I cringed when you played Sweet Child O' Mine on the Strat, Marty. That just wasn't right. Not in terms of notes being wrong, just in terms of the fact that Slash played it on a Les Paul, and it hurt. 😂😂
I say definitely have a Tele, also a Strat and a Les Paul. All three each suit certain songs independently best. Personally I keep examples of them all including Ibanez
Here’s the thing. Ive been playing strat-shaped guitars all my life and I have a hard time playing single cut les pauls. However, im gonna have to go with LP. Its just so much more versatile and you can just do anything with it.
Stratocaster = playing guitar Les Paul = guitar that stays on my string swing forever because they are so expensive and I’m too scared to put a pickguard on it but since I don’t wanna put a pickguard on it and I use picks I don’t use it because I don’t wanna scratch it. Also Stratocaster = better for beginners Les Paul = better for long time players
Duuuuuude! The whole point is to get your moneys worth!!! Go out and rock some shows, give it some wear! You paid for it so you could use it, so if you’re not gonna use it you’ve wasted your money. I get the most out of my les Paul, it’s a lovely sunburst and I’ve had it for about 11 years. When I first got it, it was in brand new condition. Now the lacquer and the paint on the front where i strum is worn off, it’s got some decent checking on the sides of the body as well. But it still sounds amazing. I restring it every two weeks as well. It just feels broken in. I hope you’ve figured out to use yours by now.
When you don't play a guitar all you're doing is cheating yourself, you paid for that instrument to play it. A little scratch isn't the end of the world, I could understand if it's something really rare and collectable but I cannot tell you how much of a shame it is to own a beautiful instrument only to never play it
Juan Jimenez I recently bought a Made in Mexico Tele for $450 (it was on sale from $600). Amazing guitar. I love it! I'll never have another main electric. I highly recommend trying one out!
Juan Jimenez You should look around online a bit to see what Teles are going for. Then see what GC has their prices at for them. Again, you should be able to get good bang for your buck with a Mexican Tele. Good luck, bro!
When I just started out on electric guitar, I just had to have a LP. Now I find, that for certain songs I love, with a clean sound, you just gotta have a strat. I tried to replicate the strats clean tone by splitting the coil on the lp's neck pick up and some adjustments to the amp. But it's never the same.
I played a Les Paul exclusively for twenty years before I played my first Stratocaster. Playing the Stratocaster was like driving a sports car after driving a Caddy. But I needed my Music Man 212 130 amp to cut through the mix with the Strat. I own both and love them.
@@arul7467 no, I tried out many guitars, the less pole is heavy and unconfortable. I wouldn't like practicing with it. Plus I don't like the neck relief at the nut, which they say is necessary but other guitars don't have. And how bout the price they wanna charge you even though you don't have a recording contract and don't make a living as a musician.
@@drmidnight2419 lmao. It's les paul ,not pole. If that was ur attempt at being edgy u failed. As for the price no one's forcing u to buy are they? So live ur life in peace instead of fuming as if you are a fender dealer who lost a commision when someone chose a Gibson. Also a les paul is a les paul just like a strat is a strat and tele is a tele. They are all unique and can be preferred based on who is playing. You try to present yourself in comments like you've been playing for decades but your comments just make you look less like a experienced musician and more like a teenager who fights over brands
@@arul7467 I been playing for over 40years, this video is trying to sell Gibson less poles. I'm not in the music business, your not in the music business. No matter how good you can play, nobody wants to hear your guitar playing. They don't even wanna hear Ingvai Malmsteen or other great guitar players. So why spend the money on a heavy, uncomfortable, overpriced guitar? If your guitar playing sucks, you'll suck with a less pole too. You can even buy a Tokai for a lot less and put a Gibson sticker on the top and save yourself all your money. Nobody will want to hear your guitar playing anyways. I know because you can learn to play like Malmsteen or page or Hendrix but the people don't wanna hear any of it. It's just a pass time for me, l made my money in other jobs.
ZeroPoint Black They both look beautiful It just may be that you are used to the shape of the strat which is the stereotypical electric guitar shape. But to me the les paul looks great And i dont play on les pauls
I would say, it's an endless debate, but spending time on buying or chosing a good amp is brilliant idea too! Because both of them are nothing in their place without a good amp
Picked up a MIM Fender Strat a few months back. HSS plus-top, which is the blue flame maple top, I checked all of the specs from Fender when I got it, and it was set-up very well. Happy with my first electric! Been playing a Yamaha AC3R acoustic-electric for over five years, before the Strat, and enjoying it a lot more since I had it set-up at a shop, and had the saddle and nut upgraded to bone about a year ago. Would have been nice if Guitar Center would have offered me that option, even if they charged for it, after I dropped over $600. for the guitar.
That 's why I now own a chambered Gibson Les Paul with P90s . The best from the two world in one single guitar . It's real gold , that's why it's a gold top. Be consistant
As a Pro guitarist and Les Paul monogomist, I can say they both serve different purposes. However, a Strat is more nuanced, and dynamic and feels like any guitar player at any level can play it. It FEELS like a perfect guitar. Les Paul has more balls, but lacks dynamics at times. You're gonna get both : )
Strat is good at soft tones such as soft rock or blues.LP is good at harder tones such as metal and hard rock. But if you own a strat you will be able to play soft tones at master and hard tones not that good but it's still good cause cmon man it's Fender the guitar god!
OneBoy OneGame the more I play the more I notice it, on some of the heavier songs I want to play for a bit more grit, but some songs like slow ride just sound perfect on my strat.
You just had the correct answer, nobody can say deep purple was slow or soft player making cry his stratocaster. but also is true that the hardest players do preffer les pauls... hum, I still think you can play whatever you want with both.
What I have learned from your amazing video is . . . . . I need both! No more, no less . . . just both! thanks for all you do brother. We all appreciate you.
I like the sound of a Les Paul but it feels odd playing while sitting. If you watch a video of the inventor Les Paul, play a Les Paul back in the 50s, you'll see he sat the guitar on his left leg and not his right
It feels odd at first but that's technically the correct way to play any guitar while sitting. It makes playing barre chords and playing higher on the neck much easier.
Gibsons in general win because of the sustain and the richness of tone from humbuckers. One of my favorite players was Paul Kossoff and when I first started playing I was heavily influenced by him and his ability to get so many different voicings out of one Les Paul. I have Strats and Teles but my Gibsons (specifically my Les Paul) just sing like nothing else can...
Ill chime in here. Been playing guitar for years. Own / owned sooo many guitars in my life time. I own both Les Pauls and Strats. Which one do i like better? Depends on the day :) You know what matters? You. Practice. Learning something new and taking on a challenge that will make you a better player. Stevie said it best, tone is in the hands. Your hands.

The LP sounds amazing on lows and mids but lacks the strat's highs.
Totally because of the single coil versus humbuckers

For me, the Strat seemed like an obvious choice when playing in the stores. The pickups were clearer, the neck more comfortable, and the tonal differences seemed more vast. Just picked up my first les paul a couple weeks ago after making that decision, and for me I love it. It sells hard rock tones so much better, it just has enough character that it makes everything feel and sound confident. I love both, and I regularly use both. But for writing and practicing I use my Paul now
The strat is faster more advanced when you learn how to burn.
I've never owned a Les Paul. Had a Strat for years and lots of other guitars. In this video I feel like the tone of the Les Paul is way better.
You sir, have played yourself 11 times.
it depends on what amps u put on
Paul. Lack of tone is what you really nean.
The strats the one you take home to momma, the LP .....she's the girl that makes you do bad things.
Haha
That description along with just hearing the 2 side by side is making me go for the LP first lol
love that analogy..
I think that the Les Paul is better. the Stratocaster sounds awsome but the Les Paul had some little bass that change the sound and it sounds amazing. Marty Music I love your channal and your lessons cause you are the best Marty ! keep doing your great job man !
if you like bass turn the bass up on your amp. your welcome.
There was a time for me when nothing beat a Les Paul, but no longer feel that way.
magic2506 this comment is very helpful because I’m deciding on what to get so I was just wondering if on the strat can you still make it sound like a les Paul with all the distortion or is that the main difference between them
Magic2506. That's because your a more advanced player now.
Love my MIM Stratocaster! Bought it used at a Pawn Shop in 2017 for just $360! Incredible bargain! It plays amazing! Hope to get a Gibson Les Paul someday. Will be awesome to have both!
I bought my Mex Strat in High School back around 1996 for 1/8 of weed, lololol. Still got it....
You may be the first person to ever say a les paul is a comfortable guitar to wear honestly.
That scale length though 👌
I want a Strat that sounds like a Les Paul...
Buy any Jackson guitar. It's superstrat, but it sounds like Les Paul.
@2v_5r still dosent sound the same
May I recommend the fuckin frankenstrat?
I have a heavily modded strat with humbucker in neck and bridge equipped with split coil on each pickups. I can get all kinds of guitar sound
@@ros3m4ries what kind of mods? looking to upgrade mine
Les Paul. It has a richer sound
It has a richer price too lol
@@michaelnatsariym3690 Epiphone's LP's aren't that expensive but yeah if you really want a Gibson your wallet will suffer xD
Thanks for sharing.
i think a better question is humbuckers or single coils
Wounded MONK BOTH! That's where Fender Mustangs come in handy ;)
Play a PRS and have both via coil splitting.
Zeph PRS alongside Chapman Guitars and Charvel have the best coil split sounds I've heard.
Cant stand the buzz. I get enough noise through my ac outlet.
Chris E Yep both all the way. I have the Squier Affinity Strat HSS.
I'm a strat guy. just my opinion, I love les pauls don't get me wrong but there's nothing better than a strat.
Tim Backus except the les paul
Telecaster
Tim Backus The strat tone is just so motherfucking good. Blues played with a strat are smoother than a baby's oiled butt.
my man
I always was a strat guy, and I probably will be for the rest of my days. Glad to see somebody support that godly instrument!
If your Fender's neck broke, you could get it replaced, if you're les paul's neck broke, you just blew 2 grand. I prefer an epiphone tbh lol
Ethan Knudtson lol true
Or you just pay a professional to repair the break. I had a major neck break repaired in 2007 for just £45 ($57 at today's exchange rate or $88 in 2007).
Ethan Knudtson lol
that just begs the question: why the f**k are you going around breaking guitars?
Ethan Knudtson learn your facts before you speak of you steam the les Paul's glue on the neck it will come off then you can replace it quite easy and their really tuff I bang mine around hit the headstock all the time and no problems at all
I love how bright the Strat sounds. I'd be interested to see a comparison to a Telecaster
me taking Marty´s beginner lessons, stranded away to watch some end game stuff, realizing that at the moment I could not tell a difference between LP or Strat from an ironing board with 6 strings, going back to drilling the minor pentatonics. Thanks Marty, your videos really help, big time, I can´t wait to be able to talk with other people about which guitar fits better for what. ♥
Lmao the thumbnail...
When I play a power chord on a les paul i just feel... well... powerful
Its the best Feeling ever
clean: stratocaster
with ANY effect: les paul
'Standing up with a strap on'. I'm never going to be able to get that image out of my head.
the awkward pause after too lmao
Lmaoooooooo
They both sound amazing but i just like the feel of the strat personally, plus the tremelo system is fun to use
I would prefer the strat but nothing beats that Gibson tone. I prefer the ESP LTD EC-1000 VB (basically a Les Paul shape, with EMG active pickups and black and gold accents)
Carlos Aponte agree. Just picked up that exact ec-1000 VB myself to replace my Gibson les Paul.
I Wear A Fez Now I´m not here to add something to the debate. I just wanted to tell you, how much I like your Profilepicture and name.
I have a Washburn Parralax, LP styled and great sound with the JB/59 set up. www.maxsguitarstore.com/images/products/large/USM-PXL10QWBM.2518.jpg
The two best guitars on the planet imo. Totally different though I could never choose to have one or the other, you kinda need both.
Yes i like both but a les paul just has more balls
I never picked up a LP that had a thick enough neck.
les paul, no question.
Marty should do a Reddit AMA!
I'm up for that Cooper!
do it!
Obviously the Strat! Very easy choice :)
platoriam not an easy choice at all but still prefer the strat
Marty, please do guitar lesson for Trains by Porcupine Tree!
platoriam I love Stratocasters.
I have a 1995 Fender American Standard Stratocaster and it is an absolutely beautiful guitar. It has a lovely smooth, clear tone and is great for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix stuff!

The Les Paul is the definition of Rock and Roll 🤘
I'd like your comment a hundred times if I could
Nah it's a SG
Facts.
Gotta be a Jr for punk. Johnny thunders on a Les Paul Jr IS rock n roll.
as a beginner that tried both, I like the Strat. Personal opinion of course.
rcampbell25 actually, strat sounds cleaner, more acoustic, i might add, LP is kind of a rock figure. and its humbuckers (guess too wild for me.) but put p90s in that baby, sounds marvelous i tell you.
Manuel Andre De Vera Humbuckers are more than just Rock.
well, it still depends on the taste of the player though
Manuel Andre De Vera True
I mostly play Blues and Rock.
I also like a bit of Jazz and Funk occasionally.
good taste 👌
I would want one of each but prefer the Les Paul.
I like the look of a Les Paul, but I love the raw nastiest of a Stratocaster. They’re both great guitars just depends on the sound you want.
It was truly horrible!
Alexander Eddy what about voodoo child on the LP though! That hurt me a bit more!
Alexander Eddy and when he played voodoo child on the LP!!
he was just joking. he had a cheeky smile. but I agree. it was extremely irritating. but when he played it on the Les Paul I smiled.
Slash is shite.
I would take the LP over the Strat, but the Tele over either guitar
I say definitely have a Tele, also a Strat and a Les Paul. All three each suit certain songs independently best. Personally I keep examples of them all including Ibanez
I like the look/Shape of the Strat and for the Les Paul I like the sound. Both are amazing guitars though.
Just my opinion don't shoot.
\m/ thats why PRS guitars exist hahahaha. rock on
Here’s the thing. Ive been playing strat-shaped guitars all my life and I have a hard time playing single cut les pauls.
However, im gonna have to go with LP. Its just so much more versatile and you can just do anything with it.
Fender strat 👌👌
Stratocaster = playing guitar
Les Paul = guitar that stays on my string swing forever because they are so expensive and I’m too scared to put a pickguard on it but since I don’t wanna put a pickguard on it and I use picks I don’t use it because I don’t wanna scratch it.
Also
Stratocaster = better for beginners
Les Paul = better for long time players
I think its lovely when a guitar shows it’s age!
A little scratch isn't the end of the world, I could understand if it's something really rare and collectable but I cannot tell you how much of a shame it is to own a beautiful instrument only to never play it
Tele
Agreed - Tele all the way.
adamkrz59 I've been trying to get a hold of one recently too. Their so smooth
Juan Jimenez I recently bought a Made in Mexico Tele for $450 (it was on sale from $600). Amazing guitar. I love it! I'll never have another main electric. I highly recommend trying one out!
AOB I might just trade in my epiphone lp for a nice tele I saw at guitar center. If they don't screw me over that is
Juan Jimenez You should look around online a bit to see what Teles are going for. Then see what GC has their prices at for them. Again, you should be able to get good bang for your buck with a Mexican Tele. Good luck, bro!
any serious guitar player needs the Holy Trinity of Strat, Tele, and Les Paul. And you will constantly go back and forth which is your favorite.
Clicked just because his face on the thumb nail
Strat all the way
And the winner is...
THE SG
Fuck yeah
SG is the best
Now sg and The tele
Now you're talking
SG? You mean overpriced neck dive?
When I just started out on electric guitar, I just had to have a LP.
Now I find, that for certain songs I love, with a clean sound, you just gotta have a strat.
I tried to replicate the strats clean tone by splitting the coil on the lp's neck pick up and some adjustments
to the amp.
But it's never the same.
I played a Les Paul exclusively for twenty years before I played my first Stratocaster. Playing the Stratocaster was like driving a sports car after driving a Caddy. But I needed my Music Man 212 130 amp to cut through the mix with the Strat.
I own both and love them.
mean. A Paul is like driving a station wagon.
Playing a strat is like driving a cobra jet.
@@luismangiaterra1031 Dude why are you so pressed. Fender is paying you to reply to every comment?

If you have to go with just one, get a Strat with the HSS configuration and get the best of both worlds.
No. With that you get none of the strong points of either guitar, just a jack of all trades. Might aswell get an ibanez or charvel superstrat.
“Standing up with a strap on” oh my!!!!!
You're gonna get both : )
strat is the better one.. but i prefer a lespaul simply because it has 1 more fret.. i prefer access over tone and playability.
Tell that Ritchie Blackmore.
You just had the correct answer, nobody can say deep purple was slow or soft player making cry his stratocaster. but also is true that the hardest players do preffer les pauls... hum, I still think you can play whatever you want with both.
A strat with noiseless can get you from pristine cleans to high gain pretty damn comfortably though....best workhorse guitar out there......
Is Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here album considered Hard or Soft Rock? What about Fall Out Boy?
Billy Corgan basically made it law to play a Big Muff pedal with only Strat
What I have learned from your amazing video is . . . . . I need both! No more, no less . . . just both! thanks for all you do brother. We all appreciate you.
Marty: plays AC⚡DC on an les paul
Me: wait thats illegal
Well it’s better than playing it on a strat, but I know what you mean
I like the sound of a Les Paul but it feels odd playing while sitting. If you watch a video of the inventor Les Paul, play a Les Paul back in the 50s, you'll see he sat the guitar on his left leg and not his right
ParisLondonRoma he played it like a classical acoustic
Your hands.
