I love these. I went to a "Chinese" restaurant in rural US with a friend who lived in China for many years. She spoke to the hostess and then switched to that young woman's dialect and she burst into tears hearing her own language for many years. It means so much when we make the effort.
I learned how to say "Thank you, have a great day!" (Which was harder than I expected.) and the little old lady at my favorite Chinese restaurant got so excited. Even a little can mean a lot.
My wife was born in the Philippines. She had a filipina friend who was married to a Japanese guy that was temporarily working at a car parts plant here in the USA. One day we were helping them move and her friend was spinning in circles talking to her husband in japanese, my wife in tagalog and me in english. I was just in awe that she could do that. I really envy people like this that can speak multiple languages. Very impressive! Congratulations on your hard work.
I had a friend who speaks fluent English, Spanish, German and French. We were at an international meeting and she did the same thing without any hesitation. Amazing to watch!
We have a couple that are Amish and Colombian they are deliberately raising their kids trilingual. They knows who speaks which language and use it automatically. Learning a second language makes new neural connections in the brain. These kids are going to be brilliant
Thats kind of normal here in South Africa were almost all people are bi-tri or multi-lingual using multiple languages in a casual conversation is considered normal here.

I’m not sure what I am more impressed by, your astounding skills at both Chinese and Japanese, or your personality, the way you interact with people. You seem to have the knack of bringing out the best in people.
Her interactions seem a lot more genuine. A lot of polyglots on other channels seem to treat people like props and come across as insincere and just chasing views. Pearl also has a command of the languages beyond party trick level and is actually interested in talking to people.
They are such homogenous societies that seeing a blond woman in the first place must be somewhat exciting. That she can seamlessly move between languages is probably mind blowing for most of them.
What I like is that she’s a very happy, friendly person, and the language skills she possesses are just incredible. What a goodwill ambassador from the United States.

Yes but not because of the Japanese language initially, it was because a foreigner woman spoke to her husband, all kinds of scenarios were going through her head, and Japanese people are very "introverted" so being approached like that was shocking initially... after that, yes, she was also in shock because she spoke both JPN and CN. I was once talking with my friend in german and he answered in english. It was just more comfortable to vocalize our feelings like this, since we are both fluent in those languages. But the people around us were slightly confused of what is going on. 😂
My sister and I have been studying Japanese for some time. We both took a course in Akita and she's actually in Tokyo right now for 3 months of study. She's much better at forming sentences than I am so when she speaks to me I also reply in English. @@jensino

The interaction at the Chinese shop at 8:00 was my favourite in the video. The woman seems beaming with happiness and surprise that you speak not only her language but her husbands. It’s unbelievably sweet.
It was my favorite part too! It's amazing how warm and open the Asian cultures are. I normally associate this with Americans especially (just being willing to talk to strangers on the street randomly haha, as opposed to France where they think you're a psycho if you talk to a stranger on the street), so it was so nice to see this as a part of another culture!
Watching people light up when you speak their native tongues when they expect you to communicate in English just brings so much joy to me, it's so cute I would never get tired of that haha.
It's amazing how people open up to you when you speak their language. I'm Dutch and I've been living in Peru for the last two years, learning some Spanish. When you're in another country, the locals will respect you more (and scam you less) if you speak their language, for sure. ¡Buenas noches desde Perú!

Learning how to speak Japanese and Chinese, even in multiple dialects in five years, now that is really awesome. But ok, having a Japanese partner helps a lot, I should find myself a Peruvian girlfriend haha! I went to Peru to study (experience) all the master plants (medicine plants, teacher plants), this by doing the masterplant dietas and ceremonies. I'm doing this to heal myself, to become a better person and to become a maestro de las plantas, a teacher, myself. I believe everybody should travel in the world or stay abroad for at least a couple of years, as it's very good for the overall development of the individual too.

I love these videos, Chinese seems so hard, I speak a little Spanish, and a little Arabic, and Swahili. I am also from Detroit(Richmond/armada now but born and raised in the D) I learned Arabic from friends I grew up with, as you know Dearborn has the highest population of Arabs outside the Middle East. I learned Swahili in Tanzania. Traveling through Africa I was amazed at how many languages most people speak over there. It’s common for most Africans to speak 5 or more languages, and their English is always so good as well🤙😎

@@stevenhull5025 I've lost at least 3 channels in the last 6 months that just stopped making content without warning.. Pearl is actually the most transparent youtuber i've seen when I did a binge watch of her videos when i became fan earlier last year (i think) and she actually explained how the revenue works - this is why so many YTubers are doing patreon or doing the donate buttons nowadays. She is in no way hitting those numbers and that was when she was doing the "its so shocking" videos, and had more viewers. Most ppl hate YT and use Ad Blockers and some of us have subscriptions. The only reason I started subscribing to channels and making sure i watched an entire YT all the way through was because Pearl explained the ins/outs on one of her vids. TH-cam doesnt pay if the entire vid isnt watched; or sometimes if an ad is skipped; or if the people watch but aren't subscribed; you get a diff amt if your watch number vs subscribed and watched ratio is different;-- BASICALLY anything for google to not pay. I rarely donate, but I've done it like 4 or 5 times in the last 2 yrs after noticing my faves have less content or not coming back at all. (and even when one of my favorite TH-camrs was getting 3 mill views 8 yrs ago, he would show his check, it was only about 1400-2000)
As a Hispanic-American that loves Asian cultures, your videos bring so much positive energy. I have met a few Chinese, Japanese, and Korean families in my line of work, and truly have loved them. They are wonderful people.
Well, that's Taiwan for you. I bet you could also find situations like that in the Philippines. They are very mixed over there, almost as big of a mix as we have in the U.S. And I hear Singapore is similar.
I always feel like people who can speak multiple languages have a super power--especially those who've learned some languages from Asia that would appear to be much more difficult than learning spanish for instance. It's very impressive!

When you're learning languages, your brain starts making connections between them. The first extra language you learn is a bit more difficult than the subsequent languages, because technically you have to "rewire" your brain into it. But after that it becomes a bit easier. Of course it's easier learning related languages, so if for example you learn spanish, it'll be a piece of cake to learn italian/portuguese/romanian/french etc. If you learn a germanic language, like swedish for example, you'll easily jump to danish/norwegian/dutch afterwards. There is a challenge learning a language that is completely unrelated to the ones you speak, but then you just do a bit of rewiring again. I have only taken japanese lessons a few years ago, and it didn't seem that difficult. What was difficult with it, is that I had to shake off the mentality of other languages. Like, in my native language, there are tenses for almost every single moment in time that you might be talking about, while in japanese they only have 2 tenses, and their continuous forms. It was hard to get my mind around the fact that I don't have to be too specific. Once you get that mentality working though, it becomes easier. Writing was a bitch, but oh well ;) Polyglots don't have super powers, they have discipline, curiosity and determination. Everyone can do it, at their own pace. Don't get discouraged about learning a new language, it's always very rewarding when you get to use it - even if it is to shock the people around you :P
apparently english is one of the more difficult ones to learn, because we have so man nonsensical rules and meanings for words that are spelled and pronounced the same. the concept that the sentence "buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo" is grammatically correct is tough to wrap your head around even as a native english speaker. can only imagine the brain chaos that could cause to somebody trying to learn english.

And yeah, I learned about the first 100 kanji and it's hard to memorize all of it and the different readings and also speedily read whilst processing all of it. Looking at myself doing it it's like watching a machine running overdrive close to crashing, eheh. BTW, as usual, never gets old watching people's happy faces reacting to a foreigner speaking their native language. I have a soft spot for that as well

@@OrientalPearl It does happen even with the bell on. I know that from personal experience. I am subbed to just plain too many channels for YT to keep up with. The cap is 500 channels, I think (?) because I am not a content creator myself. If I was a content creator, I might be able to sub to a much larger number of channels. Anyway, it's a bad habit of mine but I sub to so many channels when I find something I like, and I like a variety of content. But even with the bell on, channels just don't show up in my noti feed or in the side-queue...it happens.
Im rather bad at chinese, pretty good at japanese and really good at korean... I get compliments in reverse order... the most in chinese because people want me to feel good and the least in korean because it is amazing for about three seconds and then they treat me like a korean and I never hear about my speaking ability again.
I admire folks who're multilingual SO much! Congrats for studying and learning these languages - reading/speaking/writing - which is so much harder and more complicated than just speaking them. I do find it amusing and fun when folks are stunned that you speak the language, but you know how most Westerners are when abroad, so I can't entirely blame them for the assumption. I really enjoyed listening to the conversation on the train. I think it's rare to see that kind of natural, flowing conversation on youtube. Yes,being able to switch is a totally separate skill in my opinion. Even harder is keeping track of who speaks what. Sooooooo ..... manymis-switched mis-switched and talked to people in the wrong language!

I’m from the Netherlands, a small country in Europe. And because our country is so small, most people speak multiple languages. For us abroad is very close! Almost everyone speaks English, most people in the east speak German as well. After that French is spoken by a lot of people.
i am still learning Japanese, early in the process too, i like seeing channels like this and Xiaomanyc, as they are indicative of true human acceptance without all the unnecessary stupid stuff in between.

I stumbled onto your video for the first time, I am amazed. My wife is Icelandic, I am Japanese. She speaks about 4 Nordic languages fluently and ended adding Japanese with ease. Myself, I struggle learning Icelandic and gave up. I don't know if it's a gender thing or perhaps geo-cultural but some people find languages easier than others. You however are on a different level, almost witchcraft!
Study Old English and German so you can get a feel for how similar all the Germanic languages really are. Here's a quick and dirty trick. The Normans invaded England in 1066. Think of all the things that already existed in England at that time. Those words will be pretty much the same in all the Germanic languages today. Also, sometimes less common English words will be the more common ones in the other languages. Example. You don't live in a place, you DWELL in a place. another word for bottle is flask. Start reading the history of the English language. Try reading Shakespeare. Another tactic is to look up Anglish, that's English with all the Latin borrowings removed.
@@ak5659 You are 100% spot on. I did not know the history linking old English to Icelandic (North Germanic) until I googled after reading your reply. This perfectly coincides with my basic Icelandic that I have learnt from my wife. Words like "kald" = cold and "fisk" = fish etc. I find English an easy language to learn as I studied it in school in Japan, when I finished university, I worked abroad in Australia and UK (England), I guess the birthplace of the English language. Thank you for the advice, I shall try reading more old English as a precursor. I really envy people that can speak multiple languages so easily, such as Oriental Pearl and most likely, yourself.

You are amazing! I've always admired polyglots. I can only speak one other language fluently (Spanish). I can get generally "get by" in Italian and know numbers and a bunch of phrases in about seven or eight other languages. I've also dabbled some ALS and LESSA. Aside from aptitude, I guess it comes down to desire and how much time one is willing to put in to it. I'm so jealous. Great job!

I think most of the world is multi-lingual.. Not uncommon for Asians to be fluent in 4+ languages, Europeans to be fluent with 3 or more...

I’m not sure what I am more impressed by, your astounding skills at both Chinese and Japanese, or your personality, the way you interact with people. You seem to have the knack of bringing out the best in people.
Her interactions seem a lot more genuine. A lot of polyglots on other channels seem to treat people like props and come across as insincere and just chasing views. Pearl also has a command of the languages beyond party trick level and is actually interested in talking to people.

Yes but not because of the Japanese language initially, it was because a foreigner woman spoke to her husband, all kinds of scenarios were going through her head, and Japanese people are very "introverted" so being approached like that was shocking initially... after that, yes, she was also in shock because she spoke both JPN and CN. My sister and I have been studying Japanese for some time. We both took a course in Akita and she's actually in Tokyo right now for 3 months of study. She's much better at forming sentences than I am so when she speaks to me I also reply in English. @@jensino

It was my favorite part too! It's amazing how warm and open the Asian cultures are. I normally associate this with Americans especially (just being willing to talk to strangers on the street randomly haha, as opposed to France where they think you're a psycho if you talk to a stranger on the street), so it was so nice to see this as a part of another culture!

It's amazing how people open up to you when you speak their language. I'm Dutch and I've been living in Peru for the last two years, learning some Spanish. When you're in another country, the locals will respect you more (and scam you less) if you speak their language, for sure.

I went to Peru to study (experience) all the master plants (medicine plants, teacher plants), this by doing the masterplant dietas and ceremonies. I'm doing this to heal myself, to become a better person and to become a maestro de las plantas, a teacher, myself.
I believe everybody should travel in the world or stay abroad for at least a couple of years, as it's very good for the overall development of the individual too.

I love these videos, Chinese seems so hard, I speak a little Spanish, and a little Arabic, and Swahili. I am also from Detroit(Richmond/armada now but born and raised in the D) I learned Arabic from friends I grew up with, as you know Dearborn has the highest population of Arabs outside the Middle East. I learned Swahili in Tanzania. Traveling through Africa I was amazed at how many languages most people speak over there. It’s common for most Africans to speak 5 or more languages, and their English is always so good as well🤙😎

@@stevenhull5025 I've lost at least 3 channels in the last 6 months that just stopped making content without warning.. Pearl is actually the most transparent youtuber i've seen when I did a binge watch of her videos when i became fan earlier last year (i think) and she actually explained how the revenue works - this is why so many YTubers are doing patreon or doing the donate buttons nowadays. She is in no way hitting those numbers and that was when she was doing the "its so shocking" videos, and had more viewers. Most ppl hate YT and use Ad Blockers and some of us have subscriptions. The only reason I started subscribing to channels and making sure i watched an entire YT all the way through was because Pearl explained the ins/outs on one of her vids. TH-cam doesnt pay if the entire vid isnt watched; or sometimes if an ad is skipped; or if the people watch but aren't subscribed; you get a diff amt if your watch number vs subscribed and watched ratio is different;-- BASICALLY anything for google to not pay. I rarely donate, but I've done it like 4 or 5 times in the last 2 yrs after noticing my faves have less content or not coming back at all. (and even when one of my favorite TH-camrs was getting 3 mill views 8 yrs ago, he would show his check, it was only about 1400-2000)

I always feel like people who can speak multiple languages have a super power--especially those who've learned some languages from Asia that would appear to be much more difficult than learning spanish for instance. It's very impressive!
ikr its like you change into a different way of thinking and understanding the little aspects of people, it's hard to explain. Like you're able to open up to people and have them open up to u
When you're learning languages, your brain starts making connections between them. The first extra language you learn is a bit more difficult than the subsequent languages, because technically you have to "rewire" your brain into it. But after that it becomes a bit easier. Of course it's easier learning related languages, so if for example you learn spanish, it'll be a piece of cake to learn italian/portuguese/romanian/french etc. If you learn a germanic language, like swedish for example, you'll easily jump to danish/norwegian/dutch afterwards. There is a challenge learning a language that is completely unrelated to the ones you speak, but then you just do a bit of rewiring again. I have only taken japanese lessons a few years ago, and it didn't seem that difficult. What was difficult with it, is that I had to shake off the mentality of other languages. Like, in my native language, there are tenses for almost every single moment in time that you might be talking about, while in japanese they only have 2 tenses, and their continuous forms. It was hard to get my mind around the fact that I don't have to be too specific. Once you get that mentality working though, it becomes easier. Writing was a bitch, but oh well ;)
Polyglots don't have super powers, they have discipline, curiosity and determination. Everyone can do it, at their own pace. Don't get discouraged about learning a new language, it's always very rewarding when you get to use it - even if it is to shock the people around you :P
Not as difficult as learning more words and concepts in the same language. And you learn more about the world too.
learning spanish is impresive as well, is a hard language also, find it funny you use it as an example of easy :P
apparently english is one of the more difficult ones to learn, because we have so man nonsensical rules and meanings for words that are spelled and pronounced the same. the concept that the sentence "buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo" is grammatically correct is tough to wrap your head around even as a native english speaker. can only imagine the brain chaos that could cause to somebody trying to learn english.

And yeah, I learned about the first 100 kanji and it's hard to memorize all of it and the different readings and also speedily read whilst processing all of it. Looking at myself doing it it's like watching a machine running overdrive close to crashing, eheh.

@@OrientalPearl It does happen even with the bell on. I know that from personal experience. I am subbed to just plain too many channels for YT to keep up with. The cap is 500 channels, I think (?) because I am not a content creator myself. If I was a content creator, I might be able to sub to a much larger number of channels. Anyway, it's a bad habit of mine but I sub to so many channels when I find something I like, and I like a variety of content. But even with the bell on, channels just don't show up in my noti feed or in the side-queue...it happens.

Im rather bad at chinese, pretty good at japanese and really good at korean... I get compliments in reverse order... the most in chinese because people want me to feel good and the least in korean because it is amazing for about three seconds and then they treat me like a korean and I never hear about my speaking ability again.
I admire folks who're multilingual SO much! Congrats for studying and learning these languages - reading/speaking/writing - which is so much harder and more complicated than just speaking them. I do find it amusing and fun when folks are stunned that you speak the language, but you know how most Westerners are when abroad, so I can't entirely blame them for the assumption. Yes,being able to switch is a totally separate skill in my opinion. Even harder is keeping track of who speaks what. Sooooooo ..... manymis-switched mis-switched and talked to people in the wrong language!

I’m from the Netherlands, a small country in Europe. And because our country is so small, most people speak multiple languages. For us abroad is very close! Almost everyone speaks English, most people in the east speak German as well. After that French is spoken by a lot of people.

I love this. It's so much fun as a guest in country to speak to locals in their own language because their reactions are often priceless. It opens lots of doors and eventually even friendships too.

I stumbled onto your video for the first time, I am amazed. My wife is Icelandic, I am Japanese. She speaks about 4 Nordic languages fluently and ended adding Japanese with ease. Myself, I struggle learning Icelandic and gave up. I don't know if it's a gender thing or perhaps geo-cultural but some people find languages easier than others. You however are on a different level, almost witchcraft!

Study Old English and German so you can get a feel for how similar all the Germanic languages really are.
Here's a quick and dirty trick. The Normans invaded England in 1066. Think of all the things that already existed in England at that time. Those words will be pretty much the same in all the Germanic languages today. Also, sometimes less common English words will be the more common ones in the other languages. Example. You don't live in a place, you DWELL in a place. another word for bottle is flask. Start reading the history of the English language. Try reading Shakespeare. Another tactic is to look up Anglish, that's English with all the Latin borrowings removed.
@@ak5659 You are 100% spot on. I did not know the history linking old English to Icelandic (North Germanic) until I googled after reading your reply. This perfectly coincides with my basic Icelandic that I have learnt from my wife. Words like "kald" = cold and "fisk" = fish etc. I find English an easy language to learn as I studied it in school in Japan, when I finished university, I worked abroad in Australia and UK (England), I guess the birthplace of the English language. Thank you for the advice, I shall try reading more old English as a precursor. I really envy people that can speak multiple languages so easily, such as Oriental Pearl and most likely, yourself.

You are amazing! I've always admired polyglots. I can only speak one other language fluently (Spanish). I can get generally "get by" in Italian and know numbers and a bunch of phrases in about seven or eight other languages. I've also dabbled some ALS and LESSA. Aside from aptitude, I guess it comes down to desire and how much time one is willing to put in to it. I'm so jealous. Great job!
