- People on the street had a seizure when they suddenly heard me speak their language. I went to Taiwan and talked to people on the streets in different Asian languages and you won't believe this actually happened.

I know everyone wants to do everything on their own with no help, but it won't work well with learning Asian languages. If I only self-studied, I wouldn't even be half as good as I am today. Start taking this seriously with a tutor and learn to read and write here:

I love these. I went to a "Chinese" restaurant in rural US with a friend who lived in China for many years. She spoke to the hostess and then switched to that young woman's dialect and she burst into tears hearing her own language for many years. It means so much when we make the effort.

I learned how to say "Thank you, have a great day!" (Which was harder than I expected.) and the little old lady at my favorite Chinese restaurant got so excited. Even a little can mean a lot.

My wife was born in the Philippines. She had a filipina friend who was married to a Japanese guy that was temporarily working at a car parts plant here in the USA. One day we were helping them move and her friend was spinning in circles talking to her husband in japanese, my wife in tagalog and me in english. I was just in awe that she could do that. I really envy people like this that can speak multiple languages. Very impressive! Congratulations on your hard work.
I had a friend who speaks fluent English, Spanish, German and French. We were at an international meeting and she did the same thing without any hesitation. Amazing to watch!
We have a couple that are Amish and Colombian they are deliberately raising their kids trilingual. They knows who speaks which language and use it automatically. Learning a second language makes new neural connections in the brain. These kids are going to be brilliant
Thats kind of normal here in South Africa were almost all people are bi-tri or multi-lingual using multiple languages in a casual conversation is considered normal here.

I think most of the world is multi-lingual.. Not uncommon for Asians to be fluent in 4+ languages, Europeans to be fluent with 3 or more...

I was once talking with my friend in german and he answered in english. It was just more comfortable to vocalize our feelings like this, since we are both fluent in those languages.
But the people around us were slightly confused of what is going on. 😂
My sister and I have been studying Japanese for some time. We both took a course in Akita and she's actually in Tokyo right now for 3 months of study. She's much better at forming sentences than I am so when she speaks to me I also reply in English. @@jensino

I’m not sure what I am more impressed by, your astounding skills at both Chinese and Japanese, or your personality, the way you interact with people. You seem to have the knack of bringing out the best in people.
Her interactions seem a lot more genuine. A lot of polyglots on other channels seem to treat people like props and come across as insincere and just chasing views. Pearl also has a command of the languages beyond party trick level and is actually interested in talking to people.

Yes but not because of the Japanese language initially, it was because a foreigner woman spoke to her husband, all kinds of scenarios were going through her head, and Japanese people are very "introverted" so being approached like that was shocking initially... after that, yes, she was also in shock because she spoke both JPN and CN. Yep, She has controlled the tones so she sound like a native. I have seen so many western people speak fluent Chinese but hen they talk I know right away Chinese is not native language for them.
The interaction at the Chinese shop at 8:00 was my favourite in the video. The woman seems beaming with happiness and surprise that you speak not only her language but her husbands. It’s unbelievably sweet.

It was my favorite part too! It's amazing how warm and open the Asian cultures are. I normally associate this with Americans especially (just being willing to talk to strangers on the street randomly haha, as opposed to France where they think you're a psycho if you talk to a stranger on the street), so it was so nice to see this as a part of another culture!

Well, that's Taiwan for you. I bet you could also find situations like that in the Philippines. They are very mixed over there, almost as big of a mix as we have in the U.S. And I hear Singapore is similar.

I really enjoyed listening to the conversation on the train. I think it's rare to see that kind of natural, flowing conversation on youtube. The videos I've seen on youtube are either interviews or slow-teaching videos, and not really a spontaneous conversation like you would see out on the street (or train!). ありがとございます！

Dude. I only know my native tongue (Spanish) and above-average English, and it gets a bit hard to switch between both when speaking. Wouldn't even imagine how hard it'd be to switch between more!
Yes,being able to switch is a totally separate skill in my opinion. Even harder is keeping track of who speaks what. Sooooooo ..... manymis-switched mis-switched and talked to people in the wrong language!
It's amazing how people open up to you when you speak their language. I'm Dutch and I've been living in Peru for the last two years, learning some Spanish. When you're in another country, the locals will respect you more (and scam you less) if you speak their language, for sure.

I went to Peru to study (experience) all the master plants (medicine plants, teacher plants), this by doing the masterplant dietas and ceremonies. I'm doing this to heal myself, to become a better person and to become a maestro de las plantas, a teacher, myself.
I believe everybody should travel in the world or stay abroad for at least a couple of years, as it's very good for the overall development of the individual too.

If I ever go back to The Netherlands I'm sure that my perspective on foreigners and immigrants has changed big time, just by being a foreigner myself for a while and actually encountering racism. Here in Peru I am the gringo, it's an interesting experience. Sometimes I just smile and say: Oye, tal vez yo soy un gringo, pero no estoy estupido (hey, I maybe a white guy, but I'm not stupid), that breaks the ice many times 😄

It's so cool to watch the expression on people's faces when you speak their complicated language. It's also really interesting that you have to (in most cases) initiate the conversation as they naturally assume you won't understand them. Brilliant 👍.

I always feel like people who can speak multiple languages have a super power--especially those who've learned some languages from Asia that would appear to be much more difficult than learning spanish for instance. It's very impressive!
ikr its like you change into a different way of thinking and understanding the little aspects of people, it's hard to explain. Like you're able to open up to people and have them open up to u
When you're learning languages, your brain starts making connections between them. The first extra language you learn is a bit more difficult than the subsequent languages, because technically you have to "rewire" your brain into it. But after that it becomes a bit easier. Of course it's easier learning related languages, so if for example you learn spanish, it'll be a piece of cake to learn italian/portuguese/romanian/french etc. If you learn a germanic language, like swedish for example, you'll easily jump to danish/norwegian/dutch afterwards. There is a challenge learning a language that is completely unrelated to the ones you speak, but then you just do a bit of rewiring again. I have only taken japanese lessons a few years ago, and it didn't seem that difficult. What was difficult with it, is that I had to shake off the mentality of other languages. Like, in my native language, there are tenses for almost every single moment in time that you might be talking about, while in japanese they only have 2 tenses, and their continuous forms. It was hard to get my mind around the fact that I don't have to be too specific. Once you get that mentality working though, it becomes easier. Writing was a bitch, but oh well ;)
Polyglots don't have super powers, they have discipline, curiosity and determination. Everyone can do it, at their own pace. Don't get discouraged about learning a new language, it's always very rewarding when you get to use it - even if it is to shock the people around you :P
Not as difficult as learning more words and concepts in the same language. And you learn more about the world too.
learning spanish is impresive as well, is a hard language also, find it funny you use it as an example of easy :P
apparently english is one of the more difficult ones to learn, because we have so man nonsensical rules and meanings for words that are spelled and pronounced the same. the concept that the sentence "buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo" is grammatically correct is tough to wrap your head around even as a native english speaker. can only imagine the brain chaos that could cause to somebody trying to learn english.
Wow, oriental pearl, the confidence of your being able to switch from speaking Japanese to Chinese on the train, is really admirable. What a really uplifting video to watch. There are so many lovely people about on your travels.
It's a great feeling to meet one of the few people who bothered to learn your language, especialy when it's so different from your own. My first language is Dutch (also a Germanic language like English, so not *that* hard to learn for a lot of people) and will always compliment the ones who took the effort to learn even the basics of our language, it's a great sign of respect.
I have no idea what kind of accent you have in Mandarin, but to me it sounds fairly fluent. Very impressive. (I gave up on Cantonese after a year... but perhaps by watching a bunch of your video's I may get motivated to pick it up again!) 🙂🙃

Oriental Pearl gets an average of $5 per thousand views according to my social media geek son. Some of her videos are hitting in excess of a million views. That equates per million at $5,000 PER video. I'm in the wrong business.
@@stevenhull5025 I've lost at least 3 channels in the last 6 months that just stopped making content without warning.. Pearl is actually the most transparent youtuber i've seen when I did a binge watch of her videos when i became fan earlier last year (i think) and she actually explained how the revenue works - this is why so many YTubers are doing patreon or doing the donate buttons nowadays. She is in no way hitting those numbers and that was when she was doing the "its so shocking" videos, and had more viewers. Most ppl hate YT and use Ad Blockers and some of us have subscriptions. The only reason I started subscribing to channels and making sure i watched an entire YT all the way through was because Pearl explained the ins/outs on one of her vids. TH-cam doesnt pay if the entire vid isnt watched; or sometimes if an ad is skipped; or if the people watch but aren't subscribed; you get a diff amt if your watch number vs subscribed and watched ratio is different;-- BASICALLY anything for google to not pay. I rarely donate, but I've done it like 4 or 5 times in the last 2 yrs after noticing my faves have less content or not coming back at all. (and even when one of my favorite TH-camrs was getting 3 mill views 8 yrs ago, he would show his check, it was only about 1400-2000)

You have to put a lot of time into the language. I did 20 hours a week for Chinese and Japanese effort a few years straight.

I love these videos, Chinese seems so hard, I speak a little Spanish, and a little Arabic, and Swahili. I am also from Detroit(Richmond/armada now but born and raised in the D) I learned Arabic from friends I grew up with, as you know Dearborn has the highest population of Arabs outside the Middle East. I learned Swahili in Tanzania. Traveling through Africa I was amazed at how many languages most people speak over there. It’s common for most Africans to speak 5 or more languages, and their English is always so good as well🤙😎

You are one of those people on TH-cam who motivate me to learn new languages and open new door for my education and just for learning new culture and tradition it's just so amazing to see a person speaking so many languages. I want to speak many languages just like you!
I love the way you do these videos. They’re so wholesome and it really shows the cultural and social benefits of traveling and learning other languages.
I wont be able to afford to leave my country any time soon, so i get to live vicariously through you a little bit lol

Happy to subscribe. I do a few other languages, but only a teeny, tiny bit of Mandarin, and even less Korean. I subscribed immediately. Have to say you have a very delightful, upbeat channel. All good wishes.

I admire folks who're multilingual SO much! Congrats for studying and learning these languages - reading/speaking/writing - which is so much harder and more complicated than just speaking them. I do find it amusing and fun when folks are stunned that you speak the language, but you know how most Westerners are when abroad, so I can't entirely blame them for the assumption. However, most of the folks you showed seemed to be very gracious and cheery about the surprise. Nice video, thanks for sharing! Think I'm going to subscribe, too. 😁👍🏻
One day when your channel will be huge you’ll remember all the struggles with fake channels and not doing the videos you really love but it will be worth it in the end. Just keep going and being real and you’ll achieve what you really strive for!

You are so amazing! I was fortunate to have lived in Okinawa, and Misawa Japan thru the US Navy and have visited Hong Kong and Tokyo in the 80's and 90's. l was stationed at Misawa AB in Aomori prefecture from 1990 to 1992. Blessings to you for your good will!
You are most impressive! Thank you for this! My Son and Daughter are in the mid-20s. My Daughter sings in Japanese, but she wants to become proficient in the spoken and written language. My Son is learning to speak, read, and write Chinese and Japanese. My Son keeps a journal he writes in Chinese characters. They both impress people, but they both want to get to your level. So thank you very much for sharing!
its so good so many people took you on and chatted in various languages,Travelling Japan in recent times with my family there were so many studying English who would come and sit with our family and interact just to speak a little English with us,Beautiful people.
I think you deserve the compliments you are getting..You are amazing speaking their languages so fluently.
Im rather bad at chinese, pretty good at japanese and really good at korean... I get compliments in reverse order... the most in chinese because people want me to feel good and the least in korean because it is amazing for about three seconds and then they treat me like a korean and I never hear about my speaking ability again.
It's crazy what white people think they deserve as compliments for doing the bare minimum of speaking a different language. I've never seen an asian person expect this kind of reaction.

Great video! I'm learning 日本語 right now and I feel like this was the first video I've ever watched were I felt like I understood most of what was said. I don't have a huge vocabulary, but I heard a lot of words I've learned recently. It was very encouraging for me! Thanks for making great videos!
