Hey, put your luts into the creative tab and after that correct the shadows and highlights and other stuff before the lut from the Basic Correction tab. The important thing in the creative tab is that you have control over the intensity of the lut.
What about a7iv? I'm reading different base isos lol some say 125/500 and some said 500/3200? I'm confused as to understanding what's the true base isos for the a7iv for s cinetone.
S-cinetone +s-cinetone color +Black Gamma Middle at +5 +Blacks at -5 +Saturation at +3 +Color Depths B +2 G +2 all others stay at zero. Obviously Detail should be dropped some. Produces some great out of camera footage at base iso of 100 and even at base 2000. Exposure for skin at +60 and all other highlights can work off of 109+.
Thanks for the Video Sean. Quick question about the A7S III firmware update. Does it automatically add on the 1/48 shutter speed or will I need to download the separate DCI license to get 1/48 to work?
Nice surprise ending! I was wondering what you did w/ Cine2. In your examples, I thought SLOG3 had the best color. I noticed a background light on screen-right was more noticeable. Consequently, I liked the SLOG3 the best. But I understand your choice of Cine2. Good video.
Thanks - I'll have some outdoor stuff at some point. I ran s-cinetone tests outdoors and found that I prefer the same exposure settings for what it's worth. Thanks for the suggestion and for checking out the channel!
You ended up clipping your highlights down to about 94 in order to match the SLOG3 to the Cinetone :( I think your understanding of scopes and correction can still be expanded, but damn dude your lighting is ON POINT.
Another excellent video man. Thanks for doing the legwork on these. Would you be interested in sharing some of your professional A7sIII work? Would love to see it.
What happens at 13:44 in the video? It suddenly gets lighter like the gamma was lifted, then it seems to fade back to the original look at 13:51 or so. I that your new look because you said you'd, pop it on" of something else?
Yea it’s definitely a challenge. I found that being able to shoot with the iso around 320 helps a lot (and good background lights of course) and that profile that I mentioned at the end seems to be the best looking image
Hey Justin, I have exactly that up on the channel (should be down the list somewhere in there) and have been considering doing an update to that video in the near future.
Very interesting. I've come back to this video after a year or more to consider again the differences between sLog and S-Cinetone, and, of course, your modified version of the latter. But one question strikes me now, about 'base' ISO. When you demonstrate how the noise vanishes in sLog at 12800, the noise seems still to be pretty well controlled at a stop higher also, certainly in comparison to how it looked at a stop lower (i.e., 10000). Does the stop above the higher 'base' ISOs benefit in some way from proximity to them, or is this just an accident of this particular picture profile? I hope I'm making that question clear! Many thanks again, either way, for a very helpful video
I loved the Dual ISO setting's explanation but when it hit 51200 it introduced a lot of noise right ? So I wonder how some people shoot and process it even at the max ISO 409600 !!!
Great video, thanks for sharing! I have one question: Is cine2 gamma compatible with s-cinetone color mode theoretically? I thought that a certain gamma is designed to be used in combination with its corresponding color mode?
Thanks, Kevin - I don't know of Sony would support the picture profile tweaks that I made and in theory, yes, certain gammas are designed to correspond to certain color modes. That said, during my tests, I found that Cine2 with S-cinetone was landing well for what I'm shooting and the result that I'm getting. Definitely not recommending it to anyone, but it is what I'll be running with for the time being.
@@seandewispelaere Man I've tested your Cine2+S-Cinetone setting on my A7S3, it works so great!! Definitely the best setting, great color, works out of the box, removes all the weirdness of the S-Cinetone gamma.
I am new to the camera world but I got an a7siii. Lol I've watched a lot of camera reviews and you have explained iso and picture profile easier than anyone has for me. I love how gerald undone color grades and it seems you have the same style. I don't know much about color grading but I will try to follow this and see. I'm using it to vlog, talking head and Skits. So I need to have a quick go to picture profile for talking head and movements in both low light and daylight
Hey nice - congrats on the new camera. In that case I’d suggest using s-Cinetone and practicing your exposure and white balance. You can get into slog or other custom profiles to work with color grading from there but all of that won’t go well if the exposure or white balance is off. Thanks for checking out the channel
@@seandewispelaere thanks for the response. I will definitely do that. Last question, what does it mean to get exposure right? Is that to make sure the nothing is blown out? Details are seen?
Yo, Bryan, that's awesome - welcome to the s3 squad. It definitely will and will be a good option if you're getting used to the video world. I'd encourage you to check out my "Exposing with Zebras" video and stick to exposing the values to the chart.
Great video man. Funny / I tend to enjoy PP0 esp for run and gun. After the destruction of internet compression etc, it fits my needs fine. Enjoy s cinetone but after tests with a poll, surprised to see everyone pick the PP0 image over Cinetone! Overall really like all the options we have. It’s such a great beast able to do almost everything you need.
Travis, what's up?! Glad that no PP is working well for you. I assume the polling was due to the added contrast vs cinetone? I've had similar results with polls where people tend to prefer higher contrasted images.
@@seandewispelaere yea, PP0 seems to be a bit more contrast and ‘warmer’ on the color spectrum than Cinetone. I also think it’s preferred by the ‘normies’ lol cause now we are so use to seeing hi-res 4K super vibrant video or ‘iPhone’ footage, which also tends to be warmer and more saturated/contrasty. So I think it’s a overall a style gaining more popularity due to just being more use to and comfortable with it and whatever the general population sees on a daily basis. Great work and please keep it up! I’m getting @geraldundone vibes
Great vid Sean! Production quality is impressive with the animations and info cards in the video! Have you noticed any problems matching S-Log to S-Cinetone in regards to the baked images being different? For instance, some kind of compromise for using S-Log to achieve an S-Cinetone look with slightly better dynamic range, perhaps at the expense of the smooth highlight rolloff. Would it usually be possible to replicate as long as the dynamic range is greater? It's a difficult concept for me wrap my mind around still, haha, but it's in theory about being able to make an S-Cinetone LUT for S-Log without compromise. Thanks for your insights in the video! Have a nice day dude.
What up, Northfarm?! I think the Phantom LUTs that I was demoing in the video look pretty close to Cinetone? I actually think that Cine2 with s-Cinetone as the color mode produces the best results and a nice blend of dynamic range and ideal skin tones
so if i need a little bit more light for s cinetone, and se the iso to 200, or 320 or something..then what? the amount of noise would be like zero noticable , if any..no? base iso just meants it is better to shoot on it, but no big deal if u go 1 stop 2 stops higher lower..no? its like a 3500k camera..how bad would be that be..
200-300 won't produce noise as long as it is exposed and graded well. I'm about to do an update to my SLOG3 video and have a clip in there that was shot at 51,200 ISO and there is noise in that but very minimal after a grade. Thanks for checking out the channel, Angelo!
@@seandewispelaere thanks dude. if it is easy to do maybe throw a quick test of s-cinetone isos, other than base isos, to see if that is gonna have any noise. saying this cause it has less wide range than s-log3... and it would be challenging to see it. slog3 i assume can handle it well, it wont be a big surprise the result. thanks!\

S cinetone still seems to have the slight Sony green skintone straight out of camera. But not as bad as previous cameras/profiles. I think your Combo actually has the best skintones.
@@seandewispelaere Yo! (I'm commenting here to prevent spoilers haha) that is dope what you did there! I came across the same problems as you where I love how easy, simple, and clean S-cinetone is and I think for youtube videos where I want a quick edit, I'll send it out there. Also filmed it with a dance team where we were dealing with inconsistent lighting the whole time and it would leave weird color of skin, so that would be another time to use it. Where as in daylight where I film a ton of weddings, I used it on a improv shoot with some friends outside and it just didn't hold up as well and I love the creative color freedom I have with Slog-3 in those type of videos. I'll test out your custom made profile for sure! Great content man!
Ha ha! It’s obvious you didn’t give S-Cinetone a fair shake and couldn’t wait to play around with all those bullshit phantom luts. Not at all a fair objective comparison so why bother then . I have seen several great videos on S-Cinetone that did it justice. Shooting at ISO 100 and dimming your light down to 11% and then being disappointed with the result really??? Many experiences videographers rave about S-Cinetone but they did their research and experimented with it over some time not 10 min like you. I USE S-CINETONE A LOT AND HERE’S WHY: Cinematic look right out of the box! S-CINETONE was first released in the Sony FX9. A high end video camera and was used to model the colors from the Sony VENICE which is Sony’s premiere cinema camera. It has less dynamic range than the SLOG variants but also comes with a much lower noise floor, stronger contrast in the shadows with a more forgiving curve in the highlights. S-CINETONE is designed to be a perfect happy medium. Don’t worry. SLOG2 and SLOG3 are not going anywhere because when shooting on larger productions, series projects, etc, you will want the most flexibility over your image. Even if that means spending the needed extra hours dealing with noise, massaging colors in place, and creating a “look” rather than the built in Sony Venice look and feel. Sony took the characteristics of s709 and created S-Cinetone, which provides images with a more cinematic look in tone and color for the video world than Rec.709. There really is no clear winner when it comes to Sony SLOG3 vs. S-CINETONE. It’s up to the user and what the shooter is after for their creative process. S-CINETONE for a faster, pleasing and more efficient experience, and SLOG3 for the best results possible although quite time consuming.

Ima say s-log + cinetone .... I guess we will see
Great guess, Marvin! Close...but no cigar :)
I am going to take a wild guess (only 1 minute in the video) and say you're filming in S-cinetone.
👀👀👀
My guess is s-cinetone
Don't punch me.

MUCH better on the new ones!
De Wispelaere, Flemish roots?
Yes, absolutely. My family is from Mele, I believe. Good eye!

S - Cinetone
Don't punch me.
💯
I USE S-CINETONE A LOT AND HERE’S WHY:
Cinematic look right out of the box!
S-CINETONE for a faster, pleasing and more efficient experience, and SLOG3 for the best results possible although quite time consuming.
bro , your stubs is causing moire to my poor eyes

slog technology will die soon, color look grey!!!!
