  • This video is a new extended version of a video I uploaded on February 13, 2021, entitled: "Dan Avila was Just One Correct Answer Away from Game Show Immortality." This new version includes added footage from the recently re-uploaded Tournament of Losers special, a higher-quality version of the Curtis Warren Million Dollar Moment episode, some minor audio fixes, and a few extended clips from each episode featured.
    ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
On November 18, 1999, Dan Avila became the first and only contestant to attempt to answer Greed's final question. Standing alone before the Tower of Greed, the former Jeopardy! champion found himself one correct answer away from $2,200,000. It was more than double the record-setting top prize Who Wants to Be a Millionaire had introduced just three months earlier. This is the story of how Dan got there, as well as the chances he received to make up for the money he originally lost.

What timing. The same weekend I upload an extended version of my video on Dan Avila, Dan makes a guest appearance on the BuzzerBlog podcast Tell Us About Yourself. I know Anna Loveberry Babycakes was asking about where Dan is today, so I figured I'd share the podcast here for anyone interested. open.spotify.com/episode/6m0kDsWBcerru4OvI6NRgr?go=1&sp_cid=60217955578a322825cf5011abd2d9c5&nd=1

I never knew he was on Viera-era _Millionaire._ At least he got something in the end from that. And it appears he doesn't beat himself up over it.

Again, I can't tell you how much heartbreak was felt when that last answer turned red. As you said, that's Greed. Again, thanks for doing this. Greed should've lasted longer.

Curtis is the smartest but is less risky while Daniel is the second smartest but is the riskiest one. This man gambled to get up there but ultimately cost him the jackpot TWICE, but worst of all, leaving him with NOTHING. Such poor luck since Curtis and even Melissa won money. Yes Daniel won in other game shows but im gonna factor those out.
Also, if anyone was unlucky besides Daniel, it has to be Jackie. Had Daniel stopped, she wouldve gone home with money, but instead got the boot.

Also to add too, i would say Daniel is like the most recent losing coach of Detroit Lions, Dan Campbell, against the 49ers in the NFC Championship game where the coach called plays on 4th downs and got turned over. Back to Daniel, he seems to be about unfazed with losing, which seems like he mustve gone to casinos and played the lottery and won and lost so much (my assumption)

The city Dan ruled out in his thinking time was the correct one.

    • @bcschneider53

Kind of the opposite of how his original question played out where the one he was most sure of and locked in first was the incorrect one...

Like I said in the original video: We would've had no Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter, James Holzhauer, or Kevin Olmstead (the four winningest contestants in game show history) had Dan picked chocolate and Miami!
And Curtis Warren was himself on top...at least for a few days (David Legler would quickly unseat him with $1.765 million on Twenty-One).

To be fair if Dan did win the 2.2M dollar question he unlikely returns to try the Million Dollar Question as he would've already won.

    • @zjzr08
      @zjzr08 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Also, can you also check out the Super Greed specials, especially the one where they won the $2M question, with very similar situations to this game, but the captian decided to take $400K instead - if the captain there have that game, then that game would've had a total of $5.62M dollars (as the other 2 "crewmates" already walked out with $810K dollars each).

IMO, tuna is a type of fish, a big range of different types of fishes.
Even if it has recognizable smell, you may confuse it with something else, like some other fish.
But to be fair, my last 2 answers were Chocolate and Cinnamon - didn't even hear about Vaporub before. Though I guess cinnamon is a sweet that can be easily confused.

I've posted (most of) this wall of text on a similar video, but thought it might garner some discussion here as well...
Dan's missed jackpot question was really bizarre for a few reasons. First, was how old the study was at the time - 17 years old, given the study was conducted in 1982. It seemed that almost all the survey questions on Greed were for very contemporary studies, i.e., ones done in 1998 or 1999. Perhaps a writer/producer was a Yale alumnus and wanted to get a chance to have their alma mater mentioned? I (think?) this was the only academic study used as a question on Greed? Was there another survey type question on Greed that presented results that were older than 1998/1999? The Yale study also only mentioned tuna as the 16th most recognizable smell - you'd think that the 5 wrong answers would be chosen from the 5th to 9th most recognizable odours. The top 10 odours in the study not mentioned in the 9 include wintergreen oil (#5), cigarette butts (#7), and beer (#10). I wonder if TV rating issues (e.g., wanting to remain "G" or "PG" rated) precluded mentioning of cigarette butts or beer as incorrect answers. Cinnamon was #14 and Tuna was #16, so other higher ranked wrong answers that weren't use in Dan's question were Ivory soap (#11), Juicy Fruit gum (#12), orange (#13) and lemon (#15). Too bad this was the only jackpot question ever shown on Greed, because (IMO) this one question really seemed like an outlier compared to all other questions posed on Greed.
For Dan's million dollar moment question, interestingly, 23 years later, the top 4 answers (New York City, Los Angeles, Miami and Orlando) look to still be true, although there's a possibility that San Francisco might crack the top 4 soon (knocking Orlando down to 5). It's facinating because some of the questions 23+ years later are incredibly dated. For instance, a $200,000 question on America's retailers with the most sales (in 1998 or 1999) had Walmart, JC Penney, Kmart and Sears Roebuck - Walmart is still number 1, but the other three are bankrupt today!

Anna Loveberry Cupcakes is definitely going to post a comment on here. This will always be her favorite show.

That's an old screenshot of the title screen from over two years ago (hence the old TH-cam layout). You can screenshot on pretty much any computer, then I used the picture in picture feature in iMovie to overlay it on the screen.

it definately was the best game show out there
The only thing I didnt like after watching this video is that the contestants where not allowed to talk to each other . Yes the captian should have had the final decision (that makes sense) but why would you basically have to wait for suttleties and a contestant remarking its easy or he know it and nodding so the captian catches the hint and can remove a wrong answer.
Obviously Daniel did not know the answer for the million, he based it on Curtis's remarks.
The other thing i didnt like is when they offer the buyout, after the first 4 question answer, the next one would have things like a car.
So effectively if the captian realizes he screwed up he can get a car but everyone else gets nothing?
The buyout should logically be shared by all contestants not for the captian to take for himself.
But you can't split the car in 5 or 4. And obviously they werent giving each of them a car.

"Bear in mind, this was before John Carpenter's win"
Even if they'd walked with the million, that would be just split up between them right, if I understand the rules here? WWTBAM had already given out millions and millions and millions to everyone combined. (Which just goes back to what I was saying about what show you'd want to GO on...)

    • @bcschneider53

Yes, Dan would have taken home $200,000 with Curtis and Melissa winning $400,000. So it would have been a combined million dollar prize

      YMMV.
I don't like shows where strangers win or lose based on the choices of other strangers they're paired with, no compensation prizes, and the questions this show asks are pretty boring pop culture factoids compared to the breadth of topics on Millionaire. I understand this show has HIGHER STAKES and RUTHLESS TERMINATOR FACEOFFS and so on, and I don't LIKE it. I LIKE the fairness of Millionaire. You absolutely don't have to agree, but Millionaire is like an unpopular popular show that people always put down when talking about Greed or Weakest Link or any other show, and I'm just explaining why those of us who love it love. It ran from 1999 to 2021 in the US, 99 to 23 in Australia, 98-2014 then 2018-present in the UK, 99-present in Poland and Russia and Germany and India and Sweden......it's not a fluke. We like the fairness of WWTBAM. Hate it as boring no problem, but I'm just telling you why we like it.
FWIW, Jeopardy isn't a thing in my country but I can tell that's a fair show too.
