  • The success of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire sparked several million dollar game shows on the other three major networks. Greed was Fox's answer, offering double the million-dollar prize ABC offered through Millionaire. The series gave game show fans plenty of memorable moments, despite being canceled after just eight months and 44 episodes...

    I liked Greed also. It was JUST as good as Millionaire. I was lucky to see some episodes
    on GSN. The reaction to when the team got the answer wrong about Chuck was absolutely
    PRICELESS! Even the college episode.
    Why this show was cancelled too soon really boggles the mind.

      @@bcschneider53 It's very smart thought of the 10.000 the terminator-chosen'd be offered if challenging some. Otherwise noone'd properly challenge anyone out of fear of losing on a later question(bigger risk of that, fewer there're on the team) and then would have won the suel for nothing. I, however, wonder how they made sure they'd not run out of those 10.000.

    I don't know what's taking Fox so long. They absolutely should bring back Greed! I was 9 years old back when the show was on (when Fox was running it and about 11 when Game Show Network added it to its lineup). Back then I made a papercraft version of those name tags the contestants would wear and even now I often fantasize about being a contestant on the show. In fact Greed is my all-time favorite game show that made a huge impact on my life actually. No game show has made that kind of impression on me like Greed has. The only reason it was so prematurely cancelled was because Fox had got a new president and she didn't like game shows. Even though Greed should've continued way beyond July 14, 2000, I find it fascinating how there were 5 Super Greed episodes that didn't assemble its teams with the Qualifying Question and beginning with the show's June 16 episode, the show went back to calling itself "Greed" alone (dropping "The Series" from its title) and also ditched the Qualifier for good... and there were 5 episodes between June 16 and July 14. In fact, I'm even working on doing a 3d recreation of the set in Blender!

    • @Barber747
      @Barber747 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OHHHH so that's why Greed was canceled so soon? Not because of plummeting ratings or controversy (unlike that shit-show the Chamber, which definitely deserved it more), but because the then-new president decided to be a kunt and take off an amazing (or at least halfway-decent) show for absolutely no reason other than her own selfishness. No wonder I stopped watching Fox following Greed's untimely cancellation!!! 😑👎🏽

    The obvious reason the terninator-chosen team member gets offered secured money is they'd otherwise think "even if i win the duel, with 1 less on the team the risk of losing on a later question is bigger and then i'll have won the duel for nothing so i better not challenge anyone".

    it was definately the best game show but i didnt get why they made the 2 million progressive to 2.2 million. It made no sense because nobody ever won the top prize so whats the point of increasing it.
    but the combanation of the terminator and the captian being the only one who could remove the answer and the 5th question having to have 4 answers, made it very intresting.

    Although CBS had _Winning Lines_ & NBC had _Twenty-One_ to try to match ABC's _Who Wants to be a Millionaire,_ _Greed_ wasn't the only FOX game show during the Millennium Game Show era. They also had the _$1,000,000 It's Your Chance of a Lifetime_ hosted by Gordon Elliott (Which thanks to that show I'm convinced was the Inquizitor on GSN's old show _Inquizition),_ & they also put another game show on their FOX Family channel called _Paranoia_ hosted by Peter Tomarken.
    Although _It's Your Chance of a Lifetime_ only lasted 4 episodes, they did have a million dollar winner. With _Paranoia,_ though the jackpot started at $1,500,000, it's rules & structure made it impossible to win that amount. But it was an anazing concept & thanks to it's interactivity with the internet, I think could work today even better than _Greed_ could.
    Both shows were neat, but _Greed_ was a higher priority show at that time, giving neither show a decent chance to survive.

    • @bcschneider53
      @bcschneider53  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, plus Fox got a new head of programming that really prioritized scripted television. It’s a shame it didn’t last too long. I just wish they’d re-release the 44 episodes they have on a streaming service or something...

    • @tranmanhuc6235
      @tranmanhuc6235 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      FYI, the Inquizitor was actually William Bassett... also, Paranoia is like, the best show to do in a pandemic, while Chance Of A Lifetime is still a dynamic ripoff... i have seen that many European countries, notably Germany, have (had) at least one Millionaire direct-ripoff on air

      But in the end…the power of Millionaire was too much for Greed or even NBC’s Twenty-One reboot; for the 1999-2000 season, it was *#1* among all primetime network shows!

  • @johnnyballenatl
    @johnnyballenatl ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Curtis Warren’s reign as the biggest money winner in game show history would be short-lived; just a few days later on Twenty-One, the $1.765 million David Legler collected was enough to unseat him. That record would hold for another year until Kevin Olmstead’s $2.18 million win on Millionaire.

    I'm sure it was great TV but as someone applying to game shows I don't think doing this or Weakest Link, two shows where you can be screwed over by strangers, would be my first choice over Millionaire. (I have always really hated Weakest Link to be honest. I basically like the Doctor Who stars celebrity episode and....that's it.) Is there any records of how many applicants Millionaire got, vs Greed, Weakest Link, Jeopardy etc?

    • @bcschneider53
      @bcschneider53  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That I’m not sure of. I believe well over 100,000 take the Jeopardy! test every year. I know Greed recruited contestants at the beginning with how quickly they had to get it to air, but not sure after that.
