Every game show has a pattern you can regularly follow there’s nothing you can’t really calculate. With enough data we can predict chaos that’s the beauty of life sometimes

I remember when Game Show Network did a documentary on this then showed the episode in its entirety
They did. It’s called “Big Bucks: The Press Your Luck Scandal”. You can find it on TH-cam and on GSN. It documented the entire ordeal plus it featured the entire episode including never before seen footage which was edited for broadcast due to the unprecedented length of the game. It was the first time the Michael Larson episode had ever aired since its first and only broadcast on CBS in 1985. And when the special premiered it became the most watched program in the history of the Game Show Network.
As part of the special Ed Long and Jamie Litras was invited to play Whammy! The All New Press Your Luck with Michael Larson’s brother James in a rematch. Incidentally James Larson ended up winning the match.
Sadly these two specials were the final television appearances of original Press Your Luck host Peter Tomarken. He and his wife Kathleen, volunteers of Angel Flight (a group which offers free airplane rides to transport people undergoing medical treatment) were killed when their plane crashed after takeoff on March 13, 2006
And Buzzr now airs the two part Larson episode in their rotation of Press Your Luck episodes.

I don't really think it's cheating, he just cracked a code that won him over ten thousand dollars and almost bankrupted the game show.
That's not "sketchy" to not encounter a 1/6 chance 10 times in a row, that's a 16% chance. Something would be noteworthy if it were a 0.01% chance or so, and even then it doesn't mean it couldn't happen... Execs don't have a basic understanding of statistics if they were actually thinking something was up after going 10 times without a 1/6 chance.

There is a documentary about this also on youtube . In the documentary people try to repeat what he did and couldn't do it despite knowing how everything worked , this man was the first pro gamer .
2:05, actually getting a Whammy did not cause play to pass to the next contestant. As long as you still had spins, you can continue. Play only passed when you ran out of spins, passed your remaining spins, or if you got 4 Whammys.

I remember the documentary and what he did was actually be very very observant. It turns out he didn't have to even memorize all 5 patterns at the time. It turns out that the two "target" squares always illuminated after a specific trigger square lit and it was always the same one, regardless of pattern. He just had to wait till that trigger square lit and be fast enough to press the button in order to land on the next lighted square, which was never a whammy and always had either money and/or a spin. The safe thing was that if he was a fraction too early the trigger square never had a whammy but often a trip, prize or such. He effectively found a safe zone on the board. That is why he would get "into a zone" as he was intently watching that trigger square. His early flubs were him trying to get the timing down and his only limit was simple human fatigue. He effectively played about as long as he physically could. Anyone could have done this, with no special memory skills and just focusing on the trigger square. It is possible that someone else could have figured this out or had already noticed it and had just not made it to the show.

Those episodes were amazing. I got to watch them recently thanks to buzzr, and it absolutely blew me away. I have to hand it to this guy, he was definitely a smart cookie, in someways. He lacked common sense though.
