👆 Capt Lee and Paul Hindmarsh from Line 6 discuss the evolution of the Line 6 Dream Rig.
Paul shows us how the L2t Loudspeaker can take the place of a traditional guitar amp and offers massive versatility when coupled with the HD500X. He even suggests that bands might sound better if the guitarists give up guitar amps and go direct.
Whilst Lee is quick to defend the traditional Guitar Amp it is an interesting conversation about what sounds best.

I think its hilarious that most of the questions people are asking down here are almost all covered in the video... WATCH THE VIDEO... there is not too much talking, for someone that is legitimately in the market for one of these it is very informative... thank you captain for going in depth
I'm currently running a JTV59 + HD500X + DT25 as my live rig. For the money you cannot get a more versatile, awesome sounding rig. End. I switched to this rig from using a Gibson Les Paul + handwired Cornford + pedalboard (£1k of pedals).
We do! Check out the video coming next Tuesday.
I am completing my Dream Rig Next Week with a JTV59 for my new Modern alternative Project. Im so excited and it is so amazing sounding with just my Les Paul Pro Plustop 60's tribute
Don't sweat all the people saying "too much talking". I love your guys' reviews and like that you guys get into discussions about the gear, always bringing different viewpoints into play. For instance, Chappers brings more of the hard rock/metal outlook while The Captain brings more of the blues/classic rock viewpoint. You guys bring up lots of great points musicians of different genres can consider.
I'm with you TopDawg! Only I got the monster L3t!
Your reviews are fantastic! Wish I wasn't across the pond.
I spent some time using just a PodXT straight to the board and ran my own in-ear monitoring for the guitar. It was mostly the AC30TB simulation going to a virtual 4x10 cab miked by a virtual SM57.
It was very practical and sounded great ... when the sound guy remembered to mix me in. Which often didn`t happen.
Props to the captain for trying to bring up the enthusiasm for this video. Paul was not making feel like I should buy anything.
This may be a silly question, but i thought stuff like the pod was a full emulation of a guitar amp, thus PA speakers, studio monitors etc would be best because their flat response wouldnt add or colour the emulation, so why would you have a PA with an "electric guitar" mode?
Better off using the variax and hd500(x): 1. with DT series live only for electric 2. with Lt3(2) live for only accoustic.
let FOH figure it out for the PA...
I use my PodHD 500 with a HK Audio Stage monitor. Sounds great and points right at my ears :-)
So if your PA speaker switches to electric guitar mode and turns off the tweeter, what happens to the sound of your backing track? For me, there's never an occasion when you've only got one signal source going through the PA.
I own and use Line6 gear as well as other digital and analog stuff. I also have several amps both solid state and valve (tube). Noticed the winking smiley at the end of my comment, indicating that it´s not to be taken too seriously! Stop sandbagging people with stupid comments!
The acoustic processing is happening inside the variax guitar itself. So, no plugging a regular piezo electric guitar into the L2T isn't going to sound any more like an acoustic that it already does. Its like when you have preset EQ settings on your radio for Jazz, Classical, Rock, Country etc.. If you set it to Jazz while playing rock music its still going to be rock music ;)
some people just can't evolve....It's amazing what tones you can create with this gear! It's like having a bit of everything...We are on year 2013 and that guy comments for an orange combo in a hd500 review...
I find this misleading. I have a HD500 and recently purchased a L3t. The POD, at this time, can not be programed to to recall a speaker mode on the L3t. It must be done manually. There are several other integration issues with the L3 and L2 speakers when used with a POD. I'm a little aggravated that L6 wouldn't fix these before coming out with a new POD.
That was the acoustic setting? Sounded nice but not even close to an acoustic. Still undecided about the strat sound. Odd as some of the best guitars I have heard were going through house systems. Usually pre amped but you really hear the full range of sound. Johnny A. as an example.
Hic...do you use pre amp models or full amp models? Did you set your output mode to combo power amp or studio direct when in electric guitar mode? Thanks!
Mmmm not sure about smallest rig you can take, I personally think Kemper plus FRFR speakers would be better, maybe less effects but realistically everything you would need.
Do you not get any popping from the DT amp as you change patches?
I randomly clicked more than 20 times through the video.
Heard the guitar 1 time. For an acoustic patch.
wouldn't it be fun to play through a guitar amp where someone else is switching it for you? Like every 10 seconds cuz they have ADD?
brandon9271 That's not completely true. From what I understand, the LT2 has an acoustic eq switch on it that give piezos an added "acoustic guitar body" sound.
Jump right in and confuse me, does the Pod 500 allow you to use the mic and switch to solo electric Guitar without tying up the LT2 ?
Dang, Paul is a killer guitarist!!!
my experience was the opposite. The soundguy loved to have one AMP less which would disturb his PA sound. I play with a FRFR Setup as my Monitor and send the Signal right to FOH.
Pauls playing is soooooo gooood !!!!!
any particular reason why the mic's l2 didn't make it in the mix? Reason I ask is because I am interested in knowing if it can be mic'ed like a regular amp cab in a live setting when the sound guy refuses to connect your podhd directly to the FOH mixer. This happens more regularly than you would imagine. I currently have a backup amp, but If I can use the L2 speakers I will have the perfect tone live, I just need to know if it can be mic'ed
Hello there everyone. I'm thinking about purchasing an amp modeler of some kind.
No one seems to be addressing whether the HD500X or the AxeFX II Feel like playing a real amp. (Currently in 2014) The last time I tried any Line 6 gear it was the Vetta II Head. That head could sound Very close to the Bogner Uberschall, which is Awesome, but because of the few milliseconds of latency it didn't Feel like one. (PS The Line 6 was so good, even back then, that you only noticed the difference in feel when you quickly went back and forth between the real amp and the Line 6.)
How is the latency on these units in 2014? How does that Feel? This issue is a Very close second to the tones you can achieve. Please help. (I may go try the HD500X myself today.)
Also, does an iPad running a guitar sim (JamUp w/BIAS, etc.) compare at all? Is there more latency with an app on an iPad, or less? When using a bluetooth foot pedal to change patches on an iPad is the switching smoother or worse than the HD500X or AxeFX II?
Any help is tremendously appreciated. Thank you all!
Hey Judd,
First, latency has become an almost non-issue as far as recording with something like the Pod HD pro (which I own) or the Axe Fx (which I've played extensively through friends). Here is the key... You have you evolve past the "Does it sound like a real amp" mindset. It does / they do / how dedicated are you to the idea of chasing your tone? Because it will happen for you if you get out of the mindset that the first thing you've experienced (an actual tube amp) is the end experience of your tonal growth. you will feel the impact in your chest, attack, and ears if you put any sim in the same visceral scenario as a tube amp in a room. Get past the stigma first. Then play guitar. Then visit my channel for proof.
hi: I have a Kemper, can I use my kemper with the L2T and I got all the features of the speaker or only this function with the POD HD500, I mean that the sound in the electric guitar mode its sound killer like that using my Kemper Profiling Amp
As in 'Killer of tone' I take it ?
Hello everyone
I need to know if the L2T can be configured via L6 from the HD500x. So the L2T can change it's rear setting from electric to acoustic with a preset on the HD500x
I would appreciate if you guys can help me out
This is a gret feature that I hope it can be done.
Thanks
Charles
+thebarcodestv yes sir, you can have the hd 500 x do just that with the push of a button
Thanks Mike I am leaning into purchasing and I'm wondering if someone was a simpleton like me would it be hard to program these units live??
In other words I'm used to 3 boxes to push and an amp so I would be concerned with presets being set up and hitting the wrong channel etc.
***** thank you man I will keep u informed bc it really has some great sounds !! It's time to get in the times!
Where is the video of the 500hdx with a normal guitar?
I'm a purist in other words I like a great tube sound with a little delay some gain and possibly compression think maalmsteen and basically you cannot go wrong early malmsteen didn't have too much bs on it but these HD 500 models have me thinking differently I must say sounds pretty nice
Right? It's scary how far digital effects have come. I hate to say it, but digital isn't even almost done. It has so much farther to go and already sounds so much like the real thing. Sure, today you can't beat that great tube sound, but in 20 years...who knows.
Lol. I look a bit angry in this video. I'm used to the cold north. That room was super hot!
LOL...Where is Chappers when you need him? Maybe Captain pushed too many of your buttons. Thank you for your Line 6 related demos.
Top guitarists can afford a fleet of guitars, amps and effects and roadies to cart them around and help with gear changes on stage. Mere mortals do it with the Variax & POD & DT25. Nuff Said
Funny how some videos make the HD500X sound awesome and others, like this, make it sound crap.
must say i am quite impressed
@The Captain: How long have you two had the wrong web address for Paul HindMarch Music listed.??? By the way the incorrect address listed above is infected with a Windows Edge Browser Virus. Yes I got run around at 2 am California time with a $500 estimate from this miss labeled, miss leading, and messed up virus.
what does POD stand for , if anything ?
How much of this do you carry in stock at Andertons?
I know that. I use an RP500 myself, and i love that unit, even though i love tube amps, i have to stick with the digital option, which sounds amazing. I know what you mean mate.
Try it with the hot rod deluxe instead.
Question about patches...do you use pre am modes
can you run the sound from the pod right to the L2 Pa speaker for the electric sound
You can run HD500 directly into the L2 speaker, any other pa speaker or system, directly in a computer usb, headphones... If I'd knew, I wouldn't have bought an amp!
+arcoli with good headphones it sounds awesome.
Why don´t you just use that fine looking Orange combo behind you? ; )
i love the way line 6 sold out i own a flextone mark 1 which is 1 heck of an amp
i love valve amps use them all the time but line 6 brand are about modeling still sounds awesome but they no people want valves but the flextone is still thier best amp ever
No, as in a great (killer) guitar player. I can't really say I'm fond of the sound, I'm more of a Fractal Audio Systems guy myself when it comes to modeling haha.
Does anyone know how i can get a valve amp sound on my Pod HD500X?
+Master Peter you dont lol,.,.,.,,.,. you got my symphaty
buy a valve amp
use a DT with the hd500 to get a real real valve sound as the DT power output is valve.
Can you plug a Pod HD500/ Pod Hd Pro straight into a Stagesource L2t?
yes use line 6 link out from hd500 to l2t line 6 link in.
Maybe not live but I bet they sit around at home or in their studios experimenting with stuff like this.
Does this really make sense? If the pod is doing its job you don't need the amp. The pod going through the pa should be all that's needed as the amp is being modelled? Why buy the amp.
Anyone else notice/sense the tension between these two?
Yea,i did. you could tell in the first couple minutes.
+Jeff King ~ lol this guitarist on his probation period?
Yeah
But now they like Paul very much
+Jeff King
Paul looks pissed off and irritated. Why?
Cos all that gear is bollocks. He probably heard all the staff say it before they rolled the cameras
Same sound as the older POD HD. New switches and more powerful DSP are the only changes.
Awesome
Exactly. Bang for your buck.
I wish I could understand what they are saying! brits!
that's why its a dream brother.
Thats cause they either have an axefx,or more likely the real amps.
i think that vintage(tube) gear is for people with spare money...If you are on a budget and you want to sound nice you buy an HD500 :P Think of it that way...It costs as much as a cheap tube amp. Then say you want a different sound...Another cabinet, another tubes...Too expensive man! With the HD500 you can do everything without spending more money and time to find what you need ;)
between this, Kemper, Fractal Audio and Toontrack's EZmix software, you really DONT need amps...at all.
Actually a lot of pro guitarists use the Line 6 pod HD500, Like I dunno... James Hetfield, & Trent Reznor for example...
Vern Roberts Really? Dayum
WHY!!! I buy an HD500 and have the DSP problem and tell line 6 about it with others so release a unit to fix that but not help the people with the problem!!!
Sorry mate, even though the Line 6 sounds amazing, there are lots of players who prefer a nice tube amp, just like that Orange combo.
Oh.... how i wish i could have that Pod HD 500x...but very sad coz i could not afford that device..i really hope one day there'll be someone who will be kind to me.. to share with me his blessings..
You should really consider Sweetwaters monthly payment plans. Its how I've got most of my gear :D. Other sites have it as well, all I know is sweet water will do 24 month payments with 0% interest...which is great. And you dont have to wait that long to get it, you pay it off while you have it. It's really worth it. Just take a small portion from each check and you're good to go :D
hahaha peasant.
Caesar M
With God's grace, He indeed blessed me with this unit, POD HD 500x... I just bought one last february 7, 2015..Thanks be to God, Dearest Jesus..
+Rod Digay Amen brother! Praise Him, Only King Forever! I too have been blessed by His Grace. As of yesterday i own a HD500X. Thank You Jesus!
jeffrey monroe
Praise the Lord! good to to know.. God Bless you more brother..
Lots of blabla and no usable sound comparision guys! This is a thump down :(
In videos where is this guy on the right don't expect more than 80% bla bla bla.
This guy looks like he's about to strangle the captain lol
Nearly all of the "top" guitarists don't know anything about gear. When you spend all of your time practising (which isn't a bad thing), you don't have a lot of time for research.
Dude, you are everywhere lol
That's probably because all the top guitarists have enough fucking money to buy whatever fucking amp/pedal they want. Did that ever occur to you? Apparently not!
wat
i didnt hear one thing that sounded like a real guitar going into a real amp. am i the only one?
Yes.
So it sounded like an imaginary guitar going in to an imaginary amp?
Pretty much. It's very obvious that you're simply a purist. Which is fine, but you're letting it cloud your ears. It sounds...great.
The difference between this and what you call a "real guitar going into a real amp" is apples and oranges.
Both are great. Maybe you prefer the oranges, but that doesn't mean the apples are bad. It's just a different sound.
The simple fact is that the POD sounds good and it's cheap in comparison to a tube amp and a bunch of pedals. You can also go onto your computer and create your own patches, I'm assuming they were only playing through the factory presets.
This thing really is good, just gotta give it a shot.
Jukebox I could send you some audio clips to see if you still think that
Jukebox I heard one through a line 6 speaker it sounded good. Really good patchs.
Nearly all the top guitarists don't bother with this stuff. Nuff said.
>$3500 guitar
>garageband
>dream rig?
haha
Dream rig, with a DT-50 can set you back over $3,500!! not so dreamy.....
The Captain could learn a bit of timing and not change the patch mid phrase.
Great guitarist, but I still cant be arsed with all the modelling stuff, just buy a valve amp, a les paul and a acoustic over this junk anyday. I tried the modelling stuff once and sold it all.
The Captain doesn't look impressed, look we're not going to buy it, it's another mind muddling object, as is the demo dude, The POd knows !!!
Bored shitless... Glad that's over for everyone concerned, bloody hell.
less talking, more playing
anything that says it can do everything, usually does nothing very well. i'll stick with my les paul, a wah and a cranked 50w plexi. i'll leave the guitar computers to someone else.
Jukebox You know some phrases really are becoming terribly outdated. You'd think we would have dropped that one since the renaissance proved that it was pretty stupid.
Theres no reason why the collective methodology and experiences of all DSP engineers and sound scientists wouldn't eventually culminate in us being able to model amps so well that you cant hear the difference, and then its just a matter of time surely? The ceiling is limited by the time it takes to model an amp or an effect etc
Because its accumulative. Eventually we will have a device that can model every device perfectly. So no this device does more well than it does badly, an axe fx or their recent helix will do it better, and so on until it does it so good that you would have to be an idiot to chose an amp over it.
Bruce Wayne!
the guy in the blue shirt knows that the sound sucks.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,,., blablablablablablablaaaah! demo of mouth blabbing
it sounds horrible
So dull. Needed more Fire.
;)
Top guitarist are also dating swimsuit models and porn stars.. Nuff said ;)
The guys face says it all...he doesn't believe in it one bit. Zero enthusiasm and a little bit uncomfortable to watch. Poor guy knows he is selling out to pay the bills. Lee is trying hard to compensate...but really, they both look like they can't wait for the review to end. Take all the marketing and technological spin you want ...your ears just don't lie.
Until the drummer joins in rather than a compressed backing track that is always used to flog this stuff. Bye, bye tone...bye, bye dynamics.
Why does every body have to turn music into a pissing match.. I think line 6 makes fantastic gear, so does marshal, peavey, fender, orange, ect ect. People just turn everything into a money game because they are terrible musicians and use gear to compensate for their shitty playing ability.
El Capitano looks a bit porky back in this video....just saying.
shut up guys, ans sound the guitar! Whyis it in your hand otherwise?
WHO CARES ABOUT TEH AMP MODELING AND ALL TEH VARIAX NONSENSE…Why can't anybody show off this pedal board's effects into a NORMAL amp without the blah blah! - less talk - just show how it is, for normal usage!
You're completely missing the point. This is a video about the "dream rig" which is made up of the variax guitar, the HD500 and a Line 6 amp, or in this case the Line 6 L2t loudspeaker. If you want a video on only the HD500 then there's tons of them on TH-cam, man!!!
pacovl46 ah..!i see.
Left min5...too much talking!!!
not informative at all..get a better guitar player to demo...dun think be buying line6 podhd500x...
Joe Fazer surely shows your patience
Joe Fazer "better guitar player to demo"reeeeeeeeeeealllllyyy now....
