"90s Super GP" eventually gets released. Additionally, so many great Sega racing games are still left stranded in the arcade, whether it be out of their ill will, licensing issues or any other reason, to the point where it's borderline criminal.

@@mrpositronia The original arcade racers were about getting the best time, and getting from last place to first, primarily battling the time counter, not the AI. Hotshot Racing doesn't work this way, technically this is a "kart" racer without weapons (which were removed during development). This is why the AI is so annoying and aggressive.
@ "The AI is kind of aggressive, but it isn't unfair" when the AI rubber bands (aka artificially speeding up to keep pace with you), that's the definition of unfair. I JUST picked this game up. and boy let me tell you it's a diamond in the rough! Having grown UP in the Ridge Racer arcade era, this game hits all the right spots perfectly. I applaud the game director for this title. It's like he/she either grew up in this arcade racing era or did A LOT OF RESEARCH bc right from the start this game felt like a proper 90's cab racer.
Don't sleep on *Inertial Drift*. It's a twin-stick racer [yes, twin-stick]. Loads of fun if you can ignore bad character design, storytelling and some average looped menu tunes. The racing gameplay, music, and visuals are solid! Has a 90s vibe!
In the first Ridge Racer on PS1 drifting put the car on rails meaning that you could initiate a drift by turning the wrong way and over take your friends while confusing them with a counter rotational 360. Skillz.
How the hell does such a flat ass polygonal game with such basic lighting not even do 1080p on XBone and not 4k on ps4 pro?! This is utter nonsense that DF would make a video about this not even mention a criticism of that issue. They're like yeah this is great throughout the video :|

Track Mania Turbo has excellent arcade physics, I wish it had more traditional races rather than just (very high quality) trials. Same goes for Absolute Drift.
I can't help it, I love the non textured polygonal style. This one seems to have also 4 players split screen on PC, which is awesome. I'm just not entirely convinced of that sliding mechanics. I'm playing with manual gears, and I'm doing anything I can to not make the car go in "slide mode", it's so detached and forced.
Have to admit. I love these kind of games. When I saw Sumo was behind it, and their advertisement, I knew I had to get it. Blistering 60fps arcade racing just can't be beat. The clean lines are also a thing where even if the frame rate keeps up, it can still be a bit jarring to go to a modern racer just after playing this one, due to that distracting busyness. Especially on ones where the 60fps isn't locked.
Think about how Michael Abrash and John Carmack were blown away in VR by a simple room with facebook screenshots plastered on the walls as textures. You can make something beautiful as a small team much easier if you scale things back.

I love how most of DF videos are like a chit-chat between 2 or more video game enthusiast friends rather than a super well-made scripted video. Great game, wanna play it and feel that modern retro!
I'm downloading this now on my Switch. This is exactly the type of game I've been wanting to play for a long time.
I like how every car is a reference to a real life car as well
I would be so happy if this came to VR headsets, I'm not aware of anything like this for VR right now and it looks awesome.
I thought the exact same thing while watching this!
Looks like Horizon Chase, which is good because that game was awesome and got the retro vibe extremely well done.
I definitely wouldn't say it was "superb", but it was certainly fun for a few minutes.
I play games to have fun, so, for me, it's superb.
I'm loving this game, but makes me want Sega to release those classics.Daytona, Scud,Outrun 2 and Sega Rally on current gen
Matthew Bown I don’t understand why they don’t especially on the switch
Most definitely!
The UI looks a bit uninspired, and I actually like having some textures (like Daytona USA), but this game looks like it's a fun game. Multiplayer support is great!
I definitely did not realize this was Sumo. I'm impressed.
This game is so much fun. Really dig the subtle HD rumble when slipstreaming on the Switch.
This is seriously a real blast on the Xbox one X . I had quite a bit of fun with this and it's on Gamepass :)
Yes its great
The game looks great, and I'll probably buy it soon. I already loved Virtua Racing on Switch, and Horizon Chase Turbo. And here's hoping that "90s arcade racer", a.k.a. "90s Super GP" eventually gets released.
Additionally, so many great Sega racing games are still left stranded in the arcade, whether it be out of their ill will, licensing issues or any other reason, to the point where it's borderline criminal.
Scud Race / Sega Super GT
the game really look the part, but the game play is ruined with overaggressive AI and rubber band, so you are constantly battling the cars rather than driving
still true to the original arcade racers, then.
You must work for Sega then.
That really makes me not want to buy the game, and I had planned to. ;_;
@@mrpositronia The original arcade racers were about getting the best time, and getting from last place to first, primarily battling the time counter, not the AI. Hotshot Racing doesn't work this way, technically this is a "kart" racer without weapons (which were removed during development). This is why the AI is so annoying and aggressive.
@ "The AI is kind of aggressive, but it isn't unfair"
when the AI rubber bands (aka artificially speeding up to keep pace with you), that's the definition of unfair. It happens in Mariokart as well, but at least you can keep them back with items. Here, its (to quote another commenter): "A mariokart without the items"
I'm 50+ and this video has me grinning like a fool, how did I miss this?
I JUST picked this game up. and boy let me tell you it's a diamond in the rough! Having grown UP in the Ridge Racer arcade era, this game hits all the right spots perfectly. I applaud the game director for this title. It's like he/she either grew up in this arcade racing era or did A LOT OF RESEARCH bc right from the start this game felt like a proper 90's cab racer.
Really drawn to this game by the visuals and arcade gameplay I have seen. Glad that from a technical perspective it performs well too. 😃
Don't sleep on *Inertial Drift*. It's a twin-stick racer [yes, twin-stick]. Loads of fun if you can ignore bad character design, storytelling and some average looped menu tunes. The racing gameplay, music, and visuals are solid! Has a 90s vibe!
This video is a great ad for Outrun 2 or Outrun 2006. So fun!
Seeing OutRun2 again breaks my heart!
Love this low poly games, i want a starfox and stunt race FX in HD :P
Honestly I would love to run the game in native 320x240p to create jagged edges and make it feel like a Saturn, PS1 style game completely.
Maybe you could force it to run like that? In the video driver, or via Windows commands applied to the executable?
Reshade could help you put with this too!
As an avid car enthusiast, I appreciate how every car is based on a real model, often from the country of origin of the chosen character!
I turned off my adblocker and gave you a Like because your co-host gave praise to the God game, Ridge Racer, boi. That whole series is God-game-tier.
I've seen a few Facebook ads for this one lately, and I thought it looked pretty good. Glad to know it's really great.
Gotta love gamepass!
Cant wait to play halo infinite at launch. S

Fk yes.
I hope they’ll do a video on Inertial Drift as well which came out in the same week and is also brillant.
I love the fast, smooth and arcade style racers.
Thanks for the review! I was really wanting to check this game out, and now I have a clear idea of what i can expect!
its a great game and its on Xbox Gamepass !
Xbox sucks

@@JamieRobert_ how?
I can’t tell if all the “Xbox sucks” responses are memeing or not, but game pass is just about the best value around right now. (I have it on PC)
In the first Ridge Racer on PS1 drifting put the car on rails meaning that you could initiate a drift by turning the wrong way and over take your friends while confusing them with a counter rotational 360. Skillz.
Horizon Chase is King!!! 👏👏👏
I haven't even completed the first minute of the video and you already said that it's a racing game by Sumo Digital, so I know it's great.
I don't understand how base consoles can't run a game that looks like this at native 1080p.
Depends on how its rendered and the engine used.
@@TonyJenn also optimizations matter as well
I miss a game like SCUD RACE and DAYTONA - imagine those with RTX quality graphics. For a name, how about RAY TRACER?
Ayyyyyyy
Sounds like a reboot of the 1997 PS1 game "RAY TRACERS"
I like it but the name is probably trademarked by now lol
I literally JUST bought this and the notification for this video showed up, wtf.
Big Google is watching you?
wow fascinating!
You are the chosen one.
Same here.
Deep state confirmed.
That or Phil Spencer is watching us and works part time for Digital Foundry.
How much did you pay for that?
I can play it for free via game Pass
This game would actually look great with ray-tracing
I’m glad John didn’t let that slight against Ridge Racer go unchecked!
How the hell does such a flat ass polygonal game with such basic lighting not even do 1080p on XBone and not 4k on ps4 pro?! This is utter nonsense that DF would make a video about this not even mention a criticism of that issue. They're like yeah this is great throughout the video :|
The switch has the same resolution as the base Xone. Let that sink in.
Looks like a mobile game even though many have better graphics XD
This. My only explanation is that they made it for the switch and really didn't have any time or resources left for the port. I mean Xbox and Switch pretty much running at the same resolution?
@@biglevian still I very old games run with way better graphics on my ipad 2 like infinity blade or racing games like asphalt 8 and that mobile device is almost 10 year old
@@biglevian yeah but I still think even the switch should have easily done 1080p 60. I mean PSP games emulated on my 3 yr old phone look way better than this.
9:50 I personally prefer using the face buttons for racing games over using the triggers. This also looks like a game that I'll be playing more on Switch.
Track Mania Turbo has excellent arcade physics, I wish it had more traditional races rather than just (very high quality) trials. Same goes for Absolute Drift.
i love the ONE PIXEL they used for this game!
*:)*
Beautiful. Strikingly beautiful😍
Sonic All-star Racing Transformed still stands as the best Arcade style Racing game ever made.
Ridge Racer unbounded is a must buy which can be purchased on steam. Amazing arcade racer!
Beautiful flat shaded polys.
Been playing it with game pass and loving it so far!
Think about how Michael Abrash and John Carmack were blown away in VR by a simple room with facebook screenshots plastered on the walls as textures. You can make something beautiful as a small team much easier if you scale things back.
I'd be more excited for this, if I haven't already play a crap-load of Horizon Chase Turbo.
As an owner of each, this is much better than Horizon Chase
dodgykebaab speaking facts
Main Takeaway i got from this is that Outrun 2 still looks really good.
This looks awesome!
So close to 1 million!!!
I need a physical release, this look too good
I agree
Seeing that steering wheel POV triggered nostalgia of Interstate '76. Where's THAT remake??
Damn lol i have the 3DFX version of those games and Mechwarrior on disc from back in the day :)
@@DEVILTAZ35 Incoming, G-Police, Moto Racer and one other game i can't remember came with mine.
Horizon Chase Turbo also did this similar kind of look. And it’s awesome!
No horizon chase turbo tried to mimic old super-scaler racing game like Outrun. They are both reminiscent of early 90's arcade games, but very different breed of visuals and gameplay.
@@BlindTrustProject They mentioned Outrun in this video. So if Horizon Chase is mimicking Outrun and this game is too isn't that similar like I said?
@@lawofgravity1979 This is game is more onto the virtua racing/Daytona USA stuff.
Outrun was a 2D game on superscaler. Very different of graphic feeling and gameplay. They mention Outrun because it was a famous racing arcade game from Sega too. But Horizon chase tried to mimic that 2D scaler effect and gameplay, while Hotshot racing mimick early 3D racers. They are very different.
They are as different as playing FIFA 2D on the Genesis or Fifa 3D on Playstation. OR street Fighter 2 and Soul Calibur.
BlindTrustProject From the very description in this video “You can catch flashes of Outrun and Virtua Racing”. But okay.
@@lawofgravity1979 They put all of it in the same bag to throw famous names gamers would know in Arcade Racer. But I gave you enough infos. Just look up the differences between 3D polygons racer and 2D super scaler game. And then watch video of Horizon Chase and Hotshot. ;-)
Picked it up a few days ago on launch for Steam. Wish the levels were more "active" (regardless of generational setting) and the music could be better, but it's a fun game. Need more Indie/small games from this era and the PS1 era!
Oh man......now I want a Stunts remake using this engine. Played that game waaaayyyyy too much on the PC back in my youth.
More 90's Sega is always welcome!
I've had my eyes on this game for years. So happy to see it's finally out!
You know, games like that proves me that all that fuz about Ray Tracing and photo realistic games isn't important, what do we need it's more creative games.
I’ve always wanted a reboot of Fatal Racing but this may do for now :)
I'm in love with how cars handle in this game 😍
How do they handle?
This would be a nice arcade experience
Me: Holy cow....Outrun 2 looks amazing.
Outrun 2 (actually, Coast 2 Coast) has the most satisfying drifting of all time. That's a 10/10 game.
it's amazing all around. i've always loved outrun to hell and back, and when i first got to play outrun 2 i couldn't drive because the tears would keep blinding me. it was a weird mix of nostalgia and happiness at how well it did justice to the original, seeing those awesome visuals, the incredible vistas all the while listening to the most nostalgic tracks ever. i think that was the only game ever to do that to me, to render me unable to play because i was tearing up like an idiot.
i didn't even play it too much back then, but the original outrun is probably the game that influenced my life the most. and outrun 2 is probably the best sequel of all time.
@@GraveUypo That's a great story man! Outrun 2 is great and I love how joyful it is to play. I'm always in a better mood when I play it.
You can't say it's a great year for arcade Racers until there is a new burnout released
Looks nice, not my cup of tea but im glad to see support for these type of games still out there.
I can't get used to the alpha stuff for smoke and lights. Looks totally at odds with the clean poly style.
Someone that has access to MS should tell them "we need a 90s racer Polygon Island" mode in the next Forza Horizon. I think this would be much more interesting than LEGO or Hot Wheels expansions...
I'm still disappointed we didn't get any race that reproduced the Forza Motorsports 6 trailer lol.
