    One thing I think some people forget, some of us live in an apartment, meaning subwoofers are a no go 😔 but we still want good sound quality! What I like about this system is I can get it now without a sub, and once we get into a house, we can just purchase the sub as an add on 😁

      Absolutely. In an apt you may appreciate the bass better as well. It's just lose in the volume of that room without the sub.

      I live in an apartment and have a sub. Just turn the gain down on it, and make sure that its not directly touching the carpet or hardwood. I suggest buying a subdude pad or something similar to take the vibrations from the sub so it doesnt disturb your neighbors. Hope this helps

      I live in an apartment as well. I know it’s not ideal, but I flip my sub over on it’s side so it’s front firing rather than down. Cuts down on the boomy sound (which I hate) but still hits the lows.

    I’ve had mine for several weeks now with the big sub and using an 83A90J as the Centre channel. It really is amazing. The depth and layering of the sound is fantastic. I’m hearing new details in the sound from movies I’ve seen many times before. I’ve had several systems before including the Sammy 950a and the JBL bar 9.1. The HT-A9 is vastly superior and in another league. (One of my sons now has the Sammy and my sis the JBL lol). As for sound drop outs, they happen for me 2-3 times a week. Easily fixed (settings/wireless speakers/ RF off and on). So no big deal. I’ve noticed they happen most often with the internal apps and I have not experienced any drop outs with discs from my Panny UB 820 connected directly to the HT-A9. Or from my Sony 800 (region free) disc player connected to the A9 via TV eARC. Going to try using an Apple 4K box for apps to see if this eliminates drop outs entirely. I’ll post an update if it helps.

    • @kojak99100
      @kojak99100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@benjiebarker no you can’t … you can’t add an extra satellite or sub. The phantom centre is actually very good. When I first heard it at my dealer I was looking to see where the Centre channel was 😂. Using the A80/A90 as the centre is I think ideal as it lets you widen the soundstage by moving the fronts as wide apart as you like without worrying about the sweet spot of the phantom. I think the HT-A9 has been designed to fit best with Sony’s acoustic surface audio TV’s (A80/A90) as I heard that using it with the X95J it doesn’t match well.

    Spot on review. I have this system and A80J, although never had speaker drop outs except with AirPlay from iPhone. Simple solution is to play music from TV apps rather than phone to resolve.
    I ended up turning off the S Centre as it wasn’t as good an experience as just phantom centre from the HT-A9. I positioned the HT-A9 front speakers with slight “toe in” and have the tweeters at “ear height”. Viewing “eye height” is in line with 1/4 of TV height. Different folks will prefer different setups, but this works perfectly for our home.
    On your wall, i really suggest you try dropping the height of speakers to optimise the tweeter level from sitting position.

      @@BTheInstaller Hi first thanks for the great review about the Sony HT-A9 vs Sonos arc sorround systems comparison. I am just waiting to receive a JBL 9.1 sound bar to be used with my brand new Samsung AU 8000 smart tv. But after this review I am going to sell my JBL sound bar to buy rather the Sonos arc or this new Sony with 360 tecnology HT-A9 system. I already have a great complete Technics home theater system in my family room, its has already 15 year’s of use but still almost wants to break my house windows every time I used 👍😊💪. But now I want to install a new one this time for another quiet large room. My house is made of 100% concrete including the walls in case this info also some how influence in the acustic of the room. It has a rectangular shape and is 15 feets wide, 21 feets long with a 9 feet high ceiling. According to the opinion of others sound systems experts like you, most of them agreed that this rectangular shape room with his 9 feet high ceiling is perfect to extract the best sound effect of this new dolby atmos sorround sound. But now comes the one million dollar question. I am more a music guy than a movie with sound effects person, so taking this into consideration wich of these two premium sorround systems satisfies better my personal taste? The Sony HT-A9 with the SA-SW3 300 watts subwoofer or the Sonos arc with one or maybe two gen 3 subwoofers and a pair of SL ones sorround rear speakers? Thanks in advance for honest and expert opinion, I just want to make the right choice before I spend my hard earned cash in any of this two sorround systems. This to avoid the same mistake I already did after buying the JBL sound bar without doing a good research.

    Thanks for the review. I have the system since a month. 2 weeks without a subwoofer and 2 weeks with the SW3. Tried the system with both subs. I have the SW3 with the sub on 9 out of 12 in setting and its more than enough for my taste. TV is Samsung Q9. I have mixed feelings. I had a hard wired Teufel 5.1 system before from 2008. Due to our new place i wanted to minimize the equipment and cabling. Pro is the setup and the fact that the hub is inside my shelf and it works (with some drop outs). Compared to my old system my finding is the following. With weak sources the old system was better. With Dolby or proper 5.1 stream the new system is better. The reason is the lack of audio settings. In my old system I was able to change the volume of each channel and the frequency of the sub which had a huge influence on the mids and thus the overall balance as well. I was able to tweak around until I found the sweet spot for my individual taste. The sound was more consistent on all sources. The new system is impressive with good quality sources. Very crisp and very punchy base with a much more immersive sound compared to my old system watching the ususal streaming on the Samsung apps (by the way TV is from 2018 and the embedded apps are NOT supporting Atmos - will need to work around probably with Apple TV 2021). What I dont like is the performance on normal TV audio. The presets are not precise enough. I have always the feeling that the voices are not present enough especially on low volume. A bit annoying. Hope that Sony will update the firmware with options to customize. Overall i will keep it. My advice: If you want to buy this setup for some home entertainment cinema experience then go for it. If you want to upgrade your TV speaker for daily routine then you should rethink your expectations. Of course its a huge upgrade but in this budget range you might find a setup which fits better to your needs.

    I'm glad some people were able to get the theater system to work. When I had HT-A9 with SA-SW5 sub for 2 weeks I had very frequent audio drop outs. Numerous software and hardware resets worked for a week but then the drops became constant. But of the few times when there were no audio drops the sound was AMAZING. If they make a 2nd gen HT-A9 system I will definitely go all in again but based on my previous experience I will skip this current gen model even if wireless connectivity greatly improves and audio drop outs drastically reduced via firmware.

      I think this is a problem with ARC in general. I've been having problems with any of the audio coming out from my TV to receiver(3.1). With a new cable, the cutouts are less frequent, but still there. So I use the channels that are run through my receiver(cable and Roku). Thought I would be able to eliminate the Roku and use the built in apps on my A80J, but I guess not.

    • @maceez13
      @maceez13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pttthhh I think it’s because of the wireless speakers, with interference from the modem and WiFi devices in the room it causes a very short cutout. The thing that has held me back from Sonos is the lack of rear up firing speakers. I'm glad you touched on the drop out issue because that's one of the only criticisms I've heard about the HT-A9 and I have been wondering if maybe keeping the control box exposed (not in a cabinet) would help. We use our 13'x13' den as our tv room so I'm hoping it won't be an issue in smaller spaces. I currently have two original Homepods set up as a stereo pair and they actually do a great job creating a phantom center channel...so I assume Sony's speakers will do even better.

    Hi B, Great stuff as always! I realize by now this is an old review, but still love my HT-A9 & curious about your take as an installer how best to hide the AC power wires for the two front speakers I wish to wall-mount. In my current house I accomplished this since my TV wall backs to the garage, so I just made two small holes at the bottom of where the speakers wall-mount and passed the AC cable thru to outlets in the garage. We're moving to a new home where living room TV wall backs to the front wall of our master bedroom. I'd rather not have a white/painted cable cover showing in the family room under each front speaker. I might not be as opposed to it on our bedroom wall but might look awkward just with the wires poking thru to cable covers on that side at eye level in the bedroom. So curious what you'd commonly do in this scenario?

    I was waiting for this review! I’ve had mine for about a week. While they sound amazing, I’d rather wait for a sale. Sound drops out often, and it’s not as stable a connection as Sonos. And I missed the simplicity of the S2 App, so I will be taking them back. But these two systems are neck and neck, but the A9 has a slight edge with Atmos rears and all audio codecs supported. They made the Bravia app so much more enjoyable

      I just purchased these speakers I’m picking up the subwoofer on Monday. I also have the Sonos arc and subwoofer. I was thinking of returning the Sonos but I’m going to keep this also along with the Sony. My big concern is the sound drop off. I have a Sony a 90 J but I will not use that as my center channel I’d rather use the phantom channel that Sony produces. I’d have to agree though Sonos has the Best connectivity over any speaker company out there.

    Excellent review B, no fluff just straight down to it which is what most of us want. I've been looking at the A-9 since announced and have been following a few forums. Whilst it's not available down here at the moment I do have concerns of drop outs or dealing with dead speakers on arrival especially considering the price. Although I'm happy to just continue to watch and decide later. In the meantime I'll just continue to enjoy our 77" A80J. Stay safe. Cheers!😉

    Great review! I've been considering getting a sound system for my 11ftx11ft room and while a part of me doesn't wanna blow the bank on my first soundbar/sound system, the HT-A9's sound like a very tempting all-in-one package. On a side note, since you mentioned Value Electronics, have you considered reviewing the Hisense U9DG? There are so few reviews of it, but in my opinion it's the most interesting TV to come out this year and it really needs more reviews. Not only to see if it lives up to Hisense's claims, but also to give it more exposure.

  • @boye

    5Ghz wifi interference is typically the main cause of audio dropouts when speakers and hub are properly placed and people are not accidently standing in the way. The A9 settings lets you switch to a different 5Ghz channel but it's a very opaque process and it doesn't stick to that channel so it's something that needs to be addressed on the firmware update. People living in 5Ghz congested areas or without full control of their routers might be out of luck. Others should definitely try turning off their router's 5Ghz or changing their router 5Ghz channel to 149 or higher to steer away from the A9's 5Ghz signal.

    Great review but you left out the biggest factor. How does Dolby Atmos perform on the Sony A9 compared to Sonos ARC ? Another thing you forgot to mention, you can add second subwoofer to the Sonos ARC. I really love the fact Sony A9 has 4 upfiring speakers and I want to know how good is the Dolby Atmos/ DTS X perform on the Sony A9. I currently have the Sonos ARC with two subwoofers and Two rears. I’m extremely happy with the system but I wouldn’t mind upgrading to the Sony A9 just because the Sony has 4 Upfiring speakers. I’m curious which system performs better with Dolby Atmos movies?

      I do think you will loose some bass (booth quality and quantity) if you go with the sony system. Even with one sonos sub i do believe the sonos is better. Sony do use many artificial tricks to make it seem better than it is. And if it is true that the sony sub vibrates the floor, thats not good as it will cause distortion. But i have heard that the atmos is slightly better on the sony

    I have the 77" A80J, HT-A9, and SW5 sub. I'm using the tv as the center. I'm noticing low vocal levels when watching movies unless I have voice mode turned On. But the biggest problem I have been having, is when using HBO Max and the surround system will consistently cut out. And then I'll need to power cycle the hub. Only for it to continue to happen. On forums, Ive seen other people have issues with using the Sony sound system and that specific app, not sure what the issue is. I would really appreciate any input on this, thank you!
    (Viewing distance is about 10 feet from tv.
    Speakers are all evenly spaced and mounted at right about head height. Looks very similar to your set up.)
    If I turn OFF the TV as the center channel, the vocals are much more audible, and the sound is more balanced between quiet and loud scenes. When the tv center channel was on, it would be some scenes with vocals I couldnt hear, so I would turn the volume up, then an action scene would happen and the noise was deafening, and I would have to turn it down. I can't get a good balance when I use the tv as center channel, but the audio sounds so much fuller when I do, so long as I can get the volume right and actually hear conversations. 🤦‍♂️ frustrating... 😭

    Great vid. Quick question though, the Sony system that’s ~2500 beat the Sonos system that’s around ~ 1850…. My question is, what if you add that second sub to the Sonos setup. Does it make a difference? I currently have two subs + arc + one SL’s and I can say without a doubt the second sub makes a huge difference as long as the placement is in the right spot. Curious to see if a now 2500$ Sonos setup with two subs can compete with the Sony system. Thoughts?
