I am a physician and everything Matt said is true. Most drs today did not get into medicine to truly help people, they did it for the money, prestige, or family expectations. Most people who are drs shouldn’t be in medicine if they actually took Matt’s advice to heart.

I know this comment is a year old, but I feel compelled to reply and disagree. I would say that 99.5% of physicians I know are extremely selfless people who put others before themselves, almost to a fault. Why do you think the physician suicide rate is so high? And burnout? Because people are making too much money? Medicine is draining and difficult, I agree with that, but most people know money is not a good enough reason to go into medicine. I'm in medical school and I can tell you why "people get into medicine" because I am right there besides them, maybe you don't remember the conversations you had with your friends about why you applied to medicine, or maybe you're projecting, but I think most would not agree with your thinking.

Very good video. I was pre-med in undergrad and decided I didn't want the pressure of the profession and once I started to look at the busy lifestyles of doctors I saw that they had money but didn't really have a life outside of the hospital, were disconnected with family, and were so overworked they needed serious medical attention. you look at all of the ways to make money, you can actually live a better, less stressful life going into another field. I did exactly what you feared doing and I'm sure you've heard a similar story from Samer and Miles. I went to school for computer/electrical engineering because I was fascinated by both and also thought it was the ticket to making a lot of money. Here I am 10 years later since stepping foot in college and working in the field for 4 years and realizing how wrong I was after putting myself through enormous amounts of stress. I love the work but simply put, I realize I'm just building technology for people who are reaping the rewards. Wish I realized what I was setting myself up for sooner like you but I guess late is better than never 😅. Knowing what I know now I feel bad for people who fall in the same trap and never realize it until they're looking at retirement. You speak words of wisdom and should have so many more subscribers!

Other way around for me. I am an Asian MD and got my green card through my family. I miss Medicine. I made the mistake of going to USA -- just because everyone wants to go to America. I was content being a Doctor in a developing country. Now, I am an American citizen and going to recertify and get my MD license back home again. US is so competitive -- endless exams w no guarantee of residency spot despite passing. I just want to practice Medicine again! I wish I knew myself better and stayed true to who I really was. To young people, listen to your gut and always stay true to who you really are. Money will follow you if you are happy w what you do!

Are you in the USA? Just finish med school, you graduate in like a month. Do a short residency program like family med. That's only 3 years of your life. Then, work part time as a family med doc. In that specialty you can work like 20 hrs a week and make like 90k. That's only like 2 days out of the week. Use the other 5 days to work on whatever your passionate about. But at least use medicine to pay your bills, and in the mean time work on your passion... Whatever that may be! You're in a GREAT position to do that!

I completely agree with you and I think that's the unfortunate reality with social media where not often people show the realities of xyz but the "glamourus" side of it. also, I think with professions like medicine, I think many people fail to understand that just because there is a set path for it, it styill is an entreprenurial path, especially in these times with the amount of debt you take on, various subspecializations, the competitive nature in training and out of it, etc - it's simply a more academic-based entreprenurial path. So I think it's really important to consider everything prior and one's true passions because it is very hard, especially in times liek these - and there are probably more events such as these to occur in the future.

100% true. Everything you said is exactly what I felt when in practice. It's possible that I went down the wrong paths by choosing fields that were a bit too 'conceptual'. If you are a med student, think carefully over the route/ path you take in medicine. I strongly suggest incorporating minor procedures into your workflow, as opposed to choosing a purely allopathic field.

They like helping people. I know some physicians who are highly depressed because they can’t take the hours any longer but they don’t want the pay cut either. It’s a ton of your life you’ll devote to the hospital if you want to become a physician, and then as Matt points out, it’s a ton hours at the hospital every day. I could personally never do it and I love physics (what I study) instead. You’ve got one life everyone. If you want to be a dentist, go for it. Baker, go for it. Scientist, go for it.

Hey Matt! Great Video! Been watching you for a while and feel like i've gotten to know you(at least a little bit). My honest opinion is that I think eventually you should leave Amazon FBA. I think I know that you desire for something far more fulfilling and Amazon FBA is just a vehicle that you actually don't like that much. I know you love the lifestyle, but I really think should find different work. I don't think Amazon FBA fits with all your values and you're in too deep to leave it. I could be wrong, but similar to your doctor story I believe you will have a similar story with Amazon FBA but in a more intrinsic way rather than extrinsic. You wanted to do something that wanted to change peoples lives, but just didn't do it because of the lifestyle. If you can combine saving peoples lives with eCommerce I think that would be amazing. Perhaps get into the medical industry selling medical products or team up with an engineer to build something. I say this as someone who had a similar path and also ditched Amazon FBA after doing it for a while. Best of luck my friend.

I would agree, if academics stresses you out then medicine is not for you.

  • @Seek-Knowledge

I disagree. Many entrepreneurs Tim Ferris often references would describe their jobs as being very stressful. Tim Ferris writes about 'how to think like Elon Musk', the same guy that had to sleep in his factory for months to ensure he meet production targets. Effort is proportional to reward, hopefully a reward that brings fulfilment and satisfaction. For some people it's medicine, for you it wasnt.

But what if you actually want to better peoples lives without looking at the money and status side of things? Ive taken many gap years and now doing my medical studies which taight me alot on being grateful and actually making a change. When I do more than my peers to help patients which is what they should already be doing, they think im going over board but i had this passion as a child

You were never even close to being a licensed physician so please don’t assume you gave up on being a doctor. Excuses, excuses, and now you probably wish you were a doc. As a physician I can assure you there is no better job security. Despite successes in crypto and other entrepreneurs I still love everyday being in the OR. Why? Because in tough times it feels good to help the ones in need. Narcissistic and selfish behavior doesn’t belong in medicine. If your parents make you attend med school you’ll be an a-hole doc. If you do it for money you won’t have a life. Simple as that. But if you have balls and don’t mind helping others then just do it.

To me, you just chicken out. Just tell the truth. You want easy and quick money instead of working really hard for it, which has nothing to do with why others want to be doctors.

It’s WILD that you click-baited quitting being a doctor without even being a med student or doing the MCAT. Bro wasn’t even invited to be a candidate and is trying to convince others that entrepreneurship and buying his free course is better.
