Keep in mind the term "expensive" really means high quality, and the term "cheap" means lower quality. I've played some $2,000+ guitars that felt terrible, and some $400 amps that sounded amazing. Quality is in the hand of the shredder. -T

Tyler I've watched a few of these videos and I tend to be on your side with the idea of "get what makes you excited to play", even though from what I've heard, expensive amp with cheap guitar gets the better sound for gigging.
But I've not seen any of these videos even mention the middle option. Lets say you've got $1000. I've seen the comparisons made of one cheap piece and one expensive, but these videos never mention where the middle ground is. Where does going half and half on your guitar and amp sit in this? How do two mid range pieces stack up vs one cheap and one expensive piece? Would love some input on this as I'm still very unsure how much sound is affected by the guitar itself and how much is the amp

look, its controversial, depending on the player. If you want a good tone and have a 500$ budget -lets say- you'd give 350$ for a cool amp and the rest for a mid range guitar. But, if you are a player who just wants to play and have fun, then you'll buy a guitar that will make you stop watching vids and go gig, even with a cheaper amp

      Riffner I personally disagree.
An expansive guitar played through a lower quality amp doesn't sound good, it's a fact. (I'm talking about 50$ solid state amps here f.e.).
A guitar that doesn't feel good, no matter the price tag, isn't good either since it's frustrating when you play it.
In my opinion, you should have a mix of both, an amp that creates a nice sound and a guitar that's comfortable to play. I think you can get all that for less than 1000$ .

Mikolaj N If i had to get a rig for $1000 i would get an epiphone les paul plus top pro, change the nut on it.
And for the amp I'll choose the Marshall dsl15c and maybe add a wah pedal if the budget allows.
      That would be sweet

    • @ammardyaakob
      @ammardyaakob 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Just what I was about to say. You can't gig with a cheap amp. It's going to sound bad. However, you can gig with a cheap guitar. Assuming it has okay intonation and doesn't slice your fingertips when you play it. Guitars like these are in the secondhand market and go for some good cheap prices (150$-250$). Spend the rest of the money on a good loud amp.
If you really need the expensive guitar to actually pick up the guitar and get the holy grail of "feel" then go ahead, but the only person you're pleasing is yourself.

I personnaly prefer a good amp and a squier rather than a gibson through a little amp. No matter how good your guitar is, it will sound great on a good amp (mine's a fender hot rod) and will sound bad on a 10 watt amp. About guitars, I own a squier telecaster, which was my first electric ever and an ibanez prestige. I still play on my squier daily because through time it aged in a good way and it sounds great no matter what can be said about squier. My Ibanez is also really cool but i don't play it as much , also because that floyd rose is a pain in the ass to set. Also what is great about cheap guitars is that you can upgrade them without much remorse.

I started playing guitar with a very very cheap(54 dollars new) second hand acoustic guitar, I loved it. Then after a year I moved into a different city for study and there I bought a new but cheap acoustic guitar(46 dollars). But I wanted to play electric guitar so after a while I bought a cheap electric guitar(84 dollars) but after a day or two I started to abhor it. I still don't know why I bought that guitar. Then I decided to buy a good and legitimate guitar. So I continued to practice with that acoustic guitar and saved money for 5 years then I bought the Ibanez RGAIX6FM. When I saw a demo of that guitar I instantly fell in love with it and I felt that this guitar will inspire me more and I was right. When I first strum an E power chord cranking up my new Marshall MG15, that feeling was something that words cannot describe. I'm sure rock metal guitarists know that feeling.

Take a wild guess and see if you rather play a high quality guitar or a cheap. If your guitar doesn't feel nice to play and it doesn't sound good then your going to be pretty unencouraged to play guitar at all. Things like 500-600$ prs and fender strats aren't as a good quality as and 13000 prs or fender strat. just because he didn't play the same thing in the guitar doesn't mean that it was unfair. he couldnt play the same thing.

I am the most beginner there is of beginners, but I'm still enjoying it. Side note, I literally saved up for 3 years to get this guitar, I have a low income and a family to feed, but it was worth the wait in my opinion. "Are you a musician or guitar player?" Having a cheap amp doesn't allow you to tone your instrument right ... it's better to learn how to get a tone off a cheaper guitar than having to play a 10watt amp with a $ 3,000 guitar

    Expensive amp and cheap guitar
because its like 70% of the tone you got comes from the settings of the amp and its effects etc.
its like 30% of the tone comes from the humpuckers/pickups of the guitar (and the wood that effects the tone itself)
SO, Maybe cheap les paul from epiphone and some expensive amp from some other good company. 😊😊

if an amp is 70 percent of the tone then you need a better, nicer sounding guitar more suited to you and then use an amp for what its for. amplifying! effects you can get from pedals over time and if you stop liking the way the pedal sounds its better than having an amp with effects you are suck with.

Artwood gaming cast and music. Co Amp is about 60 percent of your tone... while the guitar is 100 percent playability. If you have a cheap guitar, it will sound like shit, play like shit and most likely look like shit. The way your guitar is setup is the most important thing when playing it

I spend lots of money on things like fountain pens and music instruments, and it can take a while to warm to using them. But, what are they, if not tools? A means to an end? There's no point in an unused pen or instrument, you might as well just put up a photo of it. The real price and cost of it is so it can be used, and used well, as that is what they're meant to do. Go, get that expensive thing, and use it as much as you can. And that way, even if it gets damaged, it will have been better than it never having been used at all.

I have one excellent guitar I bought new in 1978 (Gibson 'The Paul' solid walnut, not for sale ever) and one very good guitar (Epiphone ES-339) I got as a present. I love these so much I don't take them out on jams. Instead I got some lesser guitars and learned how to fix them up and set them up. A Squier Transfat (I overpaid at $150 with gig bag), an Epiphone LP Special II ($70 with 10 sets of strings from a self-disgusted guy who bought it full of ambition and never touched it again. He had it on Craigslist for 2 months at $90 and I offered him $70. It's the guitar I saw all the street buskers in Boston playing that Spring), a Squier Jagmaster for $90, with one serious ding I covered with a band-aid that I now use as a pick holder, and for $90 + shipping, a new telecaster clone from Rondo Music. These are the guitars I kept and have now.
I also bought and resold a Squier strat, a BC Rich something-or-other, an Ibanez Iceman, and an Ibanez Gio Mikro, all of which I sold for more than I paid except the Iceman...I lost $10.
I now have a collection of highly playable guitars I was able to set up and maintain with less than $25 worth of tools. Because I have so little at stake with the lesser models, I'm not afraid to tackle messing with them. Because I play these guitars in public, instead of my prize instruments, these are the guitars I most practice with. The point is, none of these guitars is holding me back in my development.
Regarding amps, when I bought my Gibson in 1978 I got a small ss amp ("nobody will be buying tube amps, anymore," said the salesman.) maybe by Univox, with a nice clean tone and very good reverb. Over time , 30+ years, it had developed scratchy pots. When I decided to start learning to play with bands I didn't know what to do about that & sold it. Big mistake. If I had it to do over, I'd keep it, clean it up and mic it out on gigs.
Since then I had a huge Fender DSP 212 that shook the house when I turned it up almost to 2, a Yamaha THRC that I like, but I'll sell now because I don't need it, a Roland 40GX that I bought new at a discount and 18 months later sold for $15 less than I paid. I just replaced that with a Boss Katana 100 for $300 from Sweetwater, but with 4 years 0% interest financing, I pay $7/month. It can do way more than I need, but I'm still trying to get from it the sound I had on the Univox.
So, to sum it up, if you're asking that question, you're not really developed enough as a guitarist for that to be your priority issue. When you find there's something you need to play that you can't play on a cheap setup, but you can play it on a better one, that's the time to trade up. Until then keep practicing.
And the best quotes I found online to use as a guide:
    1. Remember that most of the music you've heard and love, was played on worse equipment than you have now.
    2. Practice a lot. Become a terrific player. Let that be your FX.

      learn music theory

    • @L4stCaress
      @L4stCaress 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Chin Chong No worries, it's a really big part of the process to get lost at times. That's what makes it so interesting, but admittedly frustrating, too.
You don't need to know formal music theory to write music. If it sounds good, it is good. Even if you knew a lot of theory, you probably wouldn't want the listener to pay too much attention to that. That said, it's easier to proceed if you look at what other heavy rock writers/bands have done. Learn your favourite song. Play your favourite riffs. Copy, steal, experiment and make that look your own. It's okay if you plagiarise, the process is more important that the outcome. Maybe you'll write a hit next week, but I can't guarantee that. What I can guarantee, though, is that the more you write, the better you will get.
Plus, I'm sure you DO know theory! Or at least the components that make up several different theoretical concepts. If you have a general idea of which chords or groups of notes sound nice/cool/dissonant/resolving/sad/mysterious together, then you have a model to follow. Maybe it doesn't have a name yet but the biggest emotions can't be named either so don't worry too much about it.
As a final nugget of inspiration, try to come up with a cool rhythm and continue from there. That way you're less stuck on which chords to use or which scale to use etc. And don't be afraid to use your own voice in writing even if you're never planning to sing. Good luck!

    • @DreamfactoryZero
      @DreamfactoryZero 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Learn music theory at your own pace. Nirvana is just power chords and basic chords. Punk is just power chords. learn the pentatonic scale and that would be a great place to start. I've been playing for 12 years now and that's what I knew after my first year of playing. It helped a lot to develop where I'm at now.

The prs se lineup is a really good quality guitar lineup and they usually cost under $1000, and a good quality amp for pretty decent price would probably be the prs mt 15 or maybe an evh lbx III or something similar, as a really great sounding, decently priced lunchbox tube amp. The guitar will be nice enough to be enjoyable to learn on and even play after you're pretty experienced, and the newer lunchbox amps are no joke. Wow, some great points. You changed my opinion. While the amp may affect tone more, the guitar affects playability more. So I guess it boils down to "who are you playing for"? If tone is the most important and you are a good guitarist, then invest in the amp. But for most of us, the best advice is probably to invest in the best guitar you can afford. It will feel better & you're more likely to play it. Besides, you can always get wicked sick tone from an inexpensive or even free amp sim if your playing is on point.

I feel the same, guitar is more important to me than the amp. Especially since I play with headphones most of the time. But one nuance I would like to add is: does the "expensive" is the aspect to consider? I also have bunch of guitar from mid price to higher price (I have PRS too). And I don't feel like the most expensive one the most attractive one. There are other criteria to consider that are outside the price aspect. Some less expensive guitars may play as good as some more expensive ones if setup the way you like them. (Just to name one example)...

  • @d-a-e
    @d-a-e 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I bought a $200, matte black Jackson JS22 Dinky 7-String guitar. Is it cheap? Yes. Does it look and feel cheap? No. Does it sound cheap? Perhaps, and maybe it needs a new set of really good strings, a change of pickups, some adjustments here and there but despite my awareness of what this guitar was priced at, I still am drawn to it and consistently pick it up and play it and I am able to get above average sound to come out of it with or without an amp.
Point#1: If it feels right, cost doesn't even matter but in this case I guess I just lucked out on a well-built guitar that caught my eye not because of its price tag but because of the overall appeal it brought me.
A lot of reviews for this guitar end up with the same conclusion, that it does need those upgrades and adjustments to make it really shine and play exceptionally well and on par with higher end guitars so for some people, going this route is very practical as you can get almost the same performance and sound as more expensive guitars for a fraction of the price.
Point#2: It may be worth it to invest in older gear. Tyler may have had sentimental value towards his really good gear from PRS but the same could be said true for someone and their very first guitar that doesn't have all the strings, can't hold a tune, lackluster finish, etc.
Conclusion: If it matters to you, then invest in it, period.

Late to the game but still wanted to chime in. Years ago I was gifted a no name brand electric guitar and a 10W practice amp. I usually play keyboards or acoustic guitar but just joined a band playing rhythm guitar for the first time. Never had tried electric in a band because I always thought I sounded like a rookie on electric. That cheap guitar and practice amp is what I've been taking to rehearsal with my new band. I was obviously getting drowned out by the lead and bass guitars so I bought a 500W Fender Mustang. Same cheap guitar, same me and my playing ability but with this new amp, I sound like I actually know what I'm doing! For reference, I don't feel like a rookie when I play acoustic.

I play acoustic guitar more than electric, and I agree with the "expensive guitar" side. Not because I'm just the one dude that plays acoustic guitar at EVERY party, but rather because it just makes more sense to me. Honestly, Tyler, your approach makes the most sense. Although, there are many other reasons you might choose the expensive amo side of things. Obviously you would want a better sound, but it might be better just to get the guitar unless you gig a lot.

Depends what constitutes cheap? If 600-800 is cheap, then an expensive guitar is the way to go, but if 300-500 is cheap, then maybe an expensive amp is the better choice. Are we throwing pedals into the mix? If so, then maybe a cheap amp that's a great pedal platform is the better way to go. I had to make that choice and I went with an expensive amp; I was never happy with how my €500 PRS sounded through my Marshall MG15, but I loved how it sounded through my Marshall 2555x (roughly €1400 for head and €600 for cab - about €2100 total).

I bought a 94 mim tele used last year, put in new pups and control plate and a better pick guard and I wouldn’t trade it for an American. So price doesn’t matter, it’s all about how it feels, plays and sounds. I play through a peavey bass amp I got when I was a kid so I’ll probably spend money on a new amp before a guitar.

I own a PRS SE (really wish it was a 24 fret) and have a boss mkII amp. This is kind of like this video. The guitar is very appealing. It’s nice, it was around $700, and I figured if I spend more on the guitar, I would be motivated to practice.
Meanwhile for the amp, it’s a solid state amp, goes from .5 watts to 50 watts (boss katana mkII). It has its issues, but hearing guitar through that amp is a lot better than hearing music through any earbuds/headphones I own. I’m looking into replacing my mkII with a valve amp now I’ve been playing about a year, I feel ready for one. I don’t think my neighbors are.

I agree, sir. There's nothing like the feel of a good guitar in your hand and against your body. It also looks better and will last longer. A cheap, solid state combo amp won't sound as good as an all tube half stack, but if you're not inspired to pick up your guitar and play it, who cares how good your amp is?
Splurge on the guitar first, then keep saving for that dream amp.

i agree w alot of what you say here, but i disagree in the debate. i think as long as it isn't dirty cheap and crappy, the amp matters. i played for a few years on my 300 ibanez as53 on hand me down practice amps and fell inlove with it. i loved picking it up bc i loved the guitar on a deeper level, but when i got my first tube amp it took it to the next level. I guess i would get an avgerage version of each !

I bought a 1967 Fender Princeton Reverb Amp in 1994 for $200. Still have it. Go for the amp. Chances are you'll end up with 10 good guitars and 2 great amps 20 years later.

I feel like starting out it’s better to have a better amp because usually a novice guitarist won’t notice the difference in feel or sound between a cheap and an expensive guitar but they will hear the difference having a better amp makes

Its a matter of application. Are you playing mainly for yourself, or others.
There are many low end instrumets that can be made to tactilely play, as well as anything. Beyond that, it can be incrementally upgraded and modified. An amp is what it is and will never really be more. You can change a speaker, or add external effects, but in the end, it still has the same limitations. Conversely, the right amp will fill in a lot of a low end instrument's deficiencies; particularly the poor electronics.
If you play to please yourself, get the best instrument you can and get any amp you can. If you play to please others, spend a little more on the output end. In highschool, I had a pretty nice Washburn and a Squire 15w practice amp. While I never got criticized for my playing, the people I played with, did nothing but complain about having to turn down and alter their tone, to hear me. I was the weak link. Where I could play one of their 'lesser' instruments well enough, my lesser amp just couldn't do the job and so neither could I.

  • @MechanicallyMusical

Expensive guitar because I would want to play more not because of the sound defined by signal frequency but because the feeling playing a high end instrument gives you when you know how to manipulate it for a desired "feel"

There are a lot of options here. You can get a lot of Peavey Rage 158s for under $200 and get an Epiphone SL Les Paul or a Squier strat or both for around the same price point. And that will sound decent, not great, but decent. You can gig with Peavey Rage 158s and Squier strats.

I think the guitar. The reason why I say go for the expensive guitar is cause I can find a cheap mobile device and use digital amps. Even though the sounds are not the same as a physical amp. It still works

I have an ESP EC-10 which is basically a step or two up from a Fender Squire.
I also have a Blackstar FLY amp. Not the greatest by any means, but I live in an apartment so it gets about as loud as I'd need it to.
But having a cheap guitar or amp doesn't even really matter imo as long as you know how to play the instrument.

My solution? I have two affordable guitars. One is a Strat that I got off a buddy for 40 bucks since he's off to be a Marine and the other is a Jay Turser something or other that I got for 200 bucks. Some days I'll feel the want for a nice and sleek easy playing, and others, I'll want that classic feel of the Jay Turser. Either way. I pick up guitar every day. I love having options.

I saved 2 paychecks washing dishes as a young man and I bought a “cheap” guitar (Jackson Performer PS2 made in 96’ from Japan) for around $600 bucks. I changed the pickups since but I still to this day adore this guitar. When I play on a real powerful amp it’s an amazing difference. Amp over guitar, that’s just my opinion.

My 1st guitar was a Hohner Rockwood strat that came with a mini amp in a package, sounded like pure poop so i assumed it was a waste of money until i plugged it into a friend's huge Crate amp, and it sounded like a professional studio level guitar. Was gonna give up but since i heard how it sounded on that amp i kept on practicing and upgraded to an Orange amp. Felt great.

    Very interesting topic.
I would greatly depend on what you, as a musician want to do. Do you want (1) to record and sell music, or (2) just play for your own sake ?
For (1), i'd say get an expensive amp. Having a great Amp with a great cab will give you a correct tone that is a standard in the music industry, you can play like many great guitarist, but having a bad tone is definitely a turnoff for the end consumer (which is not always a musician). A cheap amp would only get you as far as a demo perhaps (not gonna put labels and whatnot in the equation)
Adding to this point, I'd like to say that we have many very popular bands that play basic riffs but are still crazy popular.
For (2), If you play for "yourself" and don't really care about joining a band and/or make records, definitely go for a nice guitar.
As a bedroom musician myself, I obviously crave the need to play a guitar and know that it will not get out of tune, there will be no fretbuzz, the intonation will be good.
You can jam to backing tracks and if it's only for yourself, recording tracks and writing music won't put quality of tone into the spotlight.
Unlike you, playing on a nice guitar does not make me feel like playing more and more. What I love most is usually recording a small track by myself and jamming over it. Having a bad tone is a big turnoff.
I've had issues with intonation, fretbuzz and action, but these can be easily overlooked when into passionate jamming
    just my thoughts!

Chapman and Lee said it nicely: If you're gigging heavily, the amp should be your main focus. If you're mostly playing at home, your guitar should be your main priority.

Or no amp and use something like garage band or Cakewalk with thd which is free.
But I agree. The guitar has to feel good to play. That being said. I have two squiers which were really cheap but play amazingly.
It's very personal to find that balance.
Love playing on my 96 blue malmsteen USA strat. But also love my squier ;)

Here's a thought that comes to my mind. Asking if we're guitar players or amp players is looking at this the wrong way. At its most basic level, we're musicians. And what, in my opinion, should always be the priority for a musician(at the very least a gigging musician) is how good you sound. That's always my number 1 priority and why I'd much rather go cheap guitar and expensive amp any day.

5 years late but what u said at the end about passion will make you pick up a guitar no matter the price was spot on brother. I've been playing since I was 11. I found a strat style guitar at trash dump and slowly fixed it. Have been obsessed every since. I've owned some super cheap guitars and some expensive ones. Some feel better than others but man I'd take the cheapest of the cheap over nothing to play. I love seeing people play with passion so I really appreciate how you said that.

Well, for a concert I’ll choose the expensive amp but if you just want to play at home, juste for fun, then I think a high quality instrument is better.
In my opinion it depends of the situation.
I recently bought a Gibson Les Paul traditionnal (Wine red finish) and I sometimes pick up the guitare and play it unplugged, only because it feels good.

Well I bought my guitar in 1984, but didn't know what it was capable of until 1994 when the Marshall amp came. So I choose the expensive guitar. A single guitar processor can be piped into the stereo or PA.

I’ve found that, especially today, if you can get a guitar in that $400-$500 range, there a lot of really good budget friendly road worthy guitars out there. Once you go north of $500 that’s where you start getting some real ringers that are an absolute joy to play!!! I can’t say I’ve had the same experience with amplifiers. I would probably buy a quality budget friendly guitar that feels good and put money into a nice higher end tube amp. Just my two cents 🤷‍♂️

I personally have what I consider a mid-range priced guitar (Aria Mac Series Satin Black) and a relatively cheap amp (Orange Crush 20, basic without reverb, only distortion), I take good care of my instrument and have had many chances to play in more expensive amps (because of school band concerts and such). I have to say, I'd rather keep my guitar and maybe change my amp in a few years, for a better one or one with more wattage, than spend a considerable amount of money on a guitar that would sound great, but not on my "cheap" amp. I have tried my guitar on a Marshall 250 combo or something (It was a marshall combo with many effects built in and an acoustic sim but it wasn't a modelling amp though) and the tones I got out of my guitar were magical! So for me personally it's amp over guitar in this one.

I'm going with cheap guitar and expensive amp, based on personal experience. Until recently, my amps were terrible. It didn't matter that I had a Synyster Gates signature model and a really good distortion pedal, because my amp couldn't process the sound very well. And so it was less fun to play. I spent more time trying to fix the sound than I did actually playing. And I never wanted to play in front of anyone with my own equipment because it just didn't sound good.

What I've always thought; If you're a bedroom player mostly, or you use an expensive amp that's not yours to gig with: expensive guitar, cheap(er) amp. If you are mostly rehearsing with a band, and gigging a lot, I'd say expensive amp cheap guitar. You won't sound perfectly crisp and clear, but you can indeed get a loud and cutting sound, which is what you'd want live. I think.
