My ear didn't develop until I started theory. Learning the intervals and how to hear them will help. Play the Major scale all over the fretboard over and over and over for months, when you play it starting at C for example can you hear the interval difference from starting at A aeolian.

I have been playing guitar for 18 years and have put lots of work into my playing. I am self taught so I have always felt there are gaps in my knowledge. It's like I know a lot of different skills and can learn pretty much what ever song I want to play but I have never been able to figure out why things work or don't work. Your system seems like a good vessel to fill in my knowledge gaps. No one in my 18 years of playing has ever given me a set of activities to improve my ear. Hopefully with ear training and theory more doors will open as far as my playing goes. Great channel.
Normally, I wouldn't comment this on a youtube video, but since you asked, here are some tips. It's not really music related, but it will make your videos look cleaner and more professional. Try to figure out a way to separate the focus from the background more. Usually people do this by playing with lighting, or the diaphragm of the camera. That's an entire lesson on its own, but in a nutshell, the more light you let in, the shallower depth of field you have, which will blur the background more. As for lighting, you could make yourself slightly brighter than the background. Try to avoid harsh and direct light, the soft light from your window looks fine. Another way to put more emphasis on the subject, in this case, you and the guitar, is to avoid clutter in the background. Sure, a plain white wall might be a bit boring, but try to not have too many distracting things in the back. It's all about finding a good balance. Other than that, I love your videos. I'm currently a college student majoring in music, and I've found your videos well-constructed and very informational. I hope to see more content in the future!

That Daft Punk hook is already more difficult as the 3rd "Doing it Right" requires the minor chord on the 6 (e.g. If C is 1, then Am is 6). Auditive shortcomings can be found pretty often today so keep up the good work.
It's an old video of yours, but I watched this a while ago (and go back to it often), and it helped me a lot. Like a lot of guitarists I've watched (probably) thousands of videos, but it seems like there are few ear training videos. Learning how to really hear the notes and all those different flavours makes me have a different relationship with the guitar.

A great ear training is record yourself playing like a 1,4,5..... 1,3,5 etc then say when walking to work, school, college or whatever just listen to it with your headphones. Or if you want to learn how to tune by ear not always relying on a tuner is record the E string then keep playing it etc (make sure it's in tune first duh! ) then apply it to the guitar.

But Even my difficulty to Ear and understand english (and write to hahaha, sorry about that), i watch your´s videos and repeat until i understand, becouse you are AMAZING, i´m subscriber since four months ago and i feel the diference of my ideas when i play guitar, following your lesson i´m make better and better, Thank you so much, and forgive my bad english.
one thing that helped me a lot on my ear training is whistling. first i have to know the music really well and try to whistle out the solo or the part of the song that im having a hard time finding it on the fret board or to not rewind back the track cuz i can recreate the melody via the whistle. i remember back when canon rock was a thing i play the song really really slow to learn the hard part on whistling then find the keys in the guitar. it took me almost half a year to finish the song.
Ear Theory It's great there are so many methods for ear training. Me, I use functional sounds to teach the ear, mind and fingers to play as one. Functional sounds retain the function ( 1 b2 2 b3 etc) of each member of the chromatic scale. They are easily mapped to the fretboard to complete the learning experience.
This is actually one of the best guitar channels on TH-cam (if not the best), you make guitar and Theory so much more interesting and easy to understand and your channel is really helpful in pointing me in the directions which I can take my playing, which recently I have been doing a lot. Also I like how you kinda explain everything in simple and clear terms unlike other channels who seem like they're talking in alien 👽. So thanks Tyler, I'm probably gonna take your course too, and keep up the videos because they're awesome 🎸🤘

I have been struggling with ear training for a year and it has help a lot!! Do it!! It is long and sometimes could be enervating but it works great for you
I am by no means a beginner and can teach my self a song by tabs along but when it comes to learning by ear even with following this guide no way. I feel it’s much more to it to be able to do that.
The first song i learned was a song i did was by memory of the melody of the song i literally just got the guitar out and started playing it, The song is Otherside by Red hot chilli peppers
I just noticed I’ve been doing this for like 4 months in a way, I keep listening to songs trying to recognize when a chord change happens. I’m gonna keep going on this. Except play it on the guitar.
you develop your ear as a side-effect. for example playing vocal lines on the guitar and improvize around it. on 1 or 2 strings so you can intuitively snap the distance and play freely. all the while there is tho no focus on developing your ear cause it would just block the expression which is why it's smth not even to consider cause you're busy anyway. it's just smth fun to do. moreover singing helps a lot too in that regard, yet again ..you guessed it
I use Spencer's vocals from ice nine kills. Really his cleans and i try to figure it out on my 6 or 7 depending on the song. So i can use it in my own cover. I recently been trying to pick out the piano in a lot of their songs
Recently decided to stop with the mindless shredding exercises and actually learning some theory so I can know how and why stuff sounds good instad of just kinda guessing what sounds good. After this video I checked out your website with the learning programs and jesus man I thought I was gonna have to pay a monthly sub of at least 50 dollars but 10 dollars every month absolutely blew my away. The guitar itself taught me that it has patterns and shape that a key likes. One string map, (root)1- skip fret -2- skip fret - 3 - 4(repeat). I dunno theory but i guess this counts.
Wormweed I personally listen for the lowest note you hear and play that. if you can't get it in standard, try drop D. If that's still to high, Drop C and continue till it's right.
most metal songs tend to contain the lowest note / chord in that tuning being "0" . Well if it doesn't you can pllay it on a higher tuning as well anways.
Most metal songs I've discovered are in drop D. Bands like A7X, however, use really odd tunings (like not at A=440) so you may need to actually look them up.

I find it easy to "sing" the melody of whatever it is I'm learning by ear, no matter if its an octave below or above, and then find the root of that. That usually gets me off on the right foot and with even just a tiny bit of theory I can find the scale and progression
I love this video, but it makes it more complex when its 4 chords overall with other chords walking up or down to the song. I always work from the bottom up. Chord/Key/major/minor and that really sets up a song. I'm glad you are doing these videos, just helpful input with other people learning guitar. Awesome man!!!

Excellent video. I usually start with either the bass or the melody lines as well. I also use software that can allow me to loop a particularly fast or difficult part and slow it down while maintaining pitch so that I can nail it.
@Music is Win - When you went to college, did you guys have Solfeggio classes (theory and all that good stuff), BUT the teacher gave you blind dictations? When I went to mid music school (here in Europe), our teacher told us what the basic scale the dictation will be in, the time signature and the rest is played by her on the piano and we needed to catch all the tones by ear, rhythmicalities, pauses and all that good stuff, not knowing with which tone she even starts... I guess it was a good training to all those who had perfect hearing OR for those who were practicing their hearing.

A great tutorial would be similar to this, maybe something along the lines of identifying tone and how to utilize the tone knob on guitar, because for years I never even touched the damn thing, but as my skill and ear improve I find tone is very important but something I largely ignored/couldnt identify for quite a long time.
I still have more fun playing / singing chord songs, learning stuff by ear usually comes to me just from playing unconsciously and stumbling into a song or riff

I am by no means a beginner and can teach my self a song by tabs along but when it comes to learning by ear even with following this guide no way. I feel it’s much more to it to be able to do that.
The first song i learned was a song i did was by memory of the melody of the song i literally just got the guitar out and started playing it, The song is Otherside by Red hot chilli peppers
I just noticed I’ve been doing this for like 4 months in a way, I keep listening to songs trying to recognize when a chord change happens. I’m gonna keep going on this. Except play it on the guitar.

you develop your ear as a side-effect. for example playing vocal lines on the guitar and improvize around it. on 1 or 2 strings so you can intuitively snap the distance and play freely. all the while there is tho no focus on developing your ear cause it would just block the expression which is why it's smth not even to consider cause you're busy anyway. it's just smth fun to do. moreover singing helps a lot too in that regard, yet again ..you guessed it

I use Spencer's vocals from ice nine kills. Really his cleans and i try to figure it out on my 6 or 7 depending on the song. So i can use it in my own cover. I recently been trying to pick out the piano in a lot of their songs
Recently decided to stop with the mindless shredding exercises and actually learning some theory so I can know how and why stuff sounds good instad of just kinda guessing what sounds good. After this video I checked out your website with the learning programs and jesus man I thought I was gonna have to pay a monthly sub of at least 50 dollars but 10 dollars every month absolutely blew my away. The guitar itself taught me that it has patterns and shape that a key likes. One string map, (root)1- skip fret -2- skip fret - 3 - 4(repeat). I dunno theory but i guess this counts.
How do you go about it when you want to learn a heavy rock/metal song, and you dont know what tuning the song is in?
Wormweed I personally listen for the lowest note you hear and play that. if you can't get it in standard, try drop D. If that's still to high, Drop C and continue till it's right.

Yes, there's sone weird guitar tunings, Opeth on ghost reveries used DADFAE
most metal songs tend to contain the lowest note / chord in that tuning being "0" . Well if it doesn't you can pllay it on a higher tuning as well anways.
Most metal songs I've discovered are in drop D. Bands like A7X, however, use really odd tunings (like not at A=440) so you may need to actually look them up.

The first song I ever learned by ear was the main riff in Something by the Beatles
I find it easy to "sing" the melody of whatever it is I'm learning by ear, no matter if its an octave below or above, and then find the root of that. That usually gets me off on the right foot and with even just a tiny bit of theory I can find the scale and progression

I love this video, but it makes it more complex when its 4 chords overall with other chords walking up or down to the song. I always work from the bottom up. Chord/Key/major/minor and that really sets up a song. I'm glad you are doing these videos, just helpful input with other people learning guitar. Awesome man!!!

Excellent video. I usually start with either the bass or the melody lines as well. I also use software that can allow me to loop a particularly fast or difficult part and slow it down while maintaining pitch so that I can nail it.
@Music is Win - When you went to college, did you guys have Solfeggio classes (theory and all that good stuff), BUT the teacher gave you blind dictations?
When I went to mid music school (here in Europe), our teacher told us what the basic scale the dictation will be in, the time signature and the rest is played by her on the piano and we needed to catch all the tones by ear, rhythmicalities, pauses and all that good stuff, not knowing with which tone she even starts... I guess it was a good training to all those who had perfect hearing OR for those who were practicing their hearing.

A great tutorial would be similar to this, maybe something along the lines of identifying tone and how to utilize the tone knob on guitar, because for years I never even touched the damn thing, but as my skill and ear improve I find tone is very important but something I largely ignored/couldnt identify for quite a long time.
