    Maybe ‘old school’ mount the spare on the front bumper for weight distribution? Might lose a little entry angle, but it could help.

    damn, most of the trails here in BC make that black diamond look like it's meant for beginners. that being said, the fact you took the Chinook through that was super fun to see. It can clearly handle more technical trails than that and once you get the feel for it more, as you said, it'll be REALLY fun to see it go through some BC trails! Loved this series guys!

    I want to see this beauty hitting BDR after BDR on your way back north and I don’t think I’m the only one. Here’s my proposed route: Cross the border, AZBDR, circle around and do the Arizona Strip west to east, road trip east and do the COBDR, road trip west and do the IDBDR. You could hook some other state BDR’s together to make a more continuous route but, some of the states look fairly boring (NV, UT and WY) if we’re being honest. Safe travels.

    when i watched the video i thought that you might benefit from lower transfer case gears, i used to have 5:1 marlin crawler gears in my transfer case with 4:88 r & p any way having these makes things smoother and very controlled on the trail. your rig is very impressive i hope to see you all at king of the hammers at Johnson valley in feb.

      Yep, sounds a little undergeared. Is he running factory r&p? The factory 4.11s are OK behind the 1fz with 35s, but it comes to life with 4.88s, his 3.4L is a good engine but doesn't have the I6 torque, so lower ratio would help a lot.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wagonteeth4837 Great point. I wonder if he was in 4-low? I remember in my 3.4 tacomas on 35s I could let the clutch out in 4-low without touching the gas. Since this is his first 4x4 trail, I wonder if he's still learning how to crawl with a clutch in 4-low? (Not a dig at all, we all have to start somewhere). Less gas pedal will make it a smoother experience.

    • @scottyh72
      @scottyh72 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hardtailparty You need double low for any type of rock work even with a 3.4. I'm on 33s and 4.10s and the gearing is tall. I get away with it on the trail with double low. I will be going to 4.88s when I go to 35s.

  • @ephjay6t87

    I can't imagine a cooler overlander. I'm not sure if it's your driving style or if you need lower TC gears, but you are stalling too often. You have lots of extra rear weight, (which I've learned is why VW's get there without 4wd), but maybe stiffening your rear springs?. Ask Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters.
    I wish you could spend more time testing in the states before you head south. I'm testing great beers now. Thanks for sharing you adventure!

    Love the chinook, your vids and vibe. It’s your ride so you can do as you choose. Personally, I’ve overlanded many thousands of miles in my 4runner that I live in for weeks at a time. I never off road just for the sake of it. There needs to be point of interest or destination for me to 4x4. I just don’t want to stress, break or wear something unnecessarily that could impact my trip. Also, south of the border sourcing parts gets much,much harder especially if you’re not in a large town. My friends 100 series LC broke in Baja and the only place we got parts was Toyota dealership. Luckily we were about a hour out of Cabo. Anywhere else on the peninsula and we would have been absolutely screwed. Still took 2 weeks to repair a relatively minor problem. Best of luck and looking forward to the adventures.

    Greetings from the somewhat warmer but still fairly foggy south Okanagan, thanks for another glimpse of life elsewhere. The awning might well take a few beatings before it's back home, I have a boat/canoe rack on the current rig and sometimes it's handy and sometimes it is less so. The rig seems pretty capable overall considering it's a camper too though. Well done and safe travels.

    It wheels great but could use lower gear ratios or a marlin crawler solution. One thing about the 80 series suspension and that kind of weight (like a heavy laden 80 series) is they don't float over mud and such. They prefer sinking to the bottom and clawing along.
