    This was a good video for ppl who like to nerd out on the equipment aspect of overlanding. Btw, i sell water filters for a living. Should make it a habit to set a caldendar alarm to change out your filters. The ones you use are fairly inexpensive. Change them 1 month earlier than the manufacturer recommended time frame. Filters trap all the gross stuff inside and given enough time it will populate enough to the point where it will get you sick. If you dont use your filters for a couple of days, its good habit to let them run for a few minutes let all the old water in the system out before drinking it. That's all. Stay safe. Stay awesome

    Having the ability and confidence to work on your own vehicle is paramount to success on a trip like this. Even if it never breaks, you have the comfort of knowing that you can fix most problems. Your discussion about situational awareness is spot on. If the hair on the back of your neck goes up, something is off. I have always thought that we have senses outside of what we readily understand and being able to understand them goes a long way in staying safe.
    As an American (and Southern), travelling without a gun would take some getting used to, but in all honesty, I've never needed a gun for my safety, but it is a comfort having one. Obviously, not an option for international travel.
    You guys are pretty much experts at this now and it shows. Here's to continued successful exploration and fun. Also, you are 100% correct on your engine choice. If I could put a Toyota 5VZ-FE in my Isuzu Trooper, I would do it tomorrow.

      We've seen plenty of rigs, new and old stuck at shops and campgrounds waiting for international parts or some know knowledgeable enough to fix them. We met a couple in Mexico who waited 4 months for a new transmission for their Ford Transit. Was quite sad really. It was paramount indeed that we're able to do most of this ourselves.
      It's been really interesting becoming more aware if our intuitive responses to places and people.

    You guys are the REALEST!! Sometimes I watch other channels and their bullshit just kills the vibes.
    Things I appreciate about this this channel:
    - you don’t over do it on the B REELS. We don’t need a million slow motion , bokeh induced ,close-up , high volume chopping of vegetables in every episode.
    - his passion for his vehicle and craftsmanship shines. I love how you show the things that do go wrong from the perspective of someone who is mechanically inclined.
    - you can feel her genuine love for him and her commitment to learn and keep exploring and helping along his side.
    - amazing drone shots. Again, not over done.
    - the colors f the videos are still nice and true. They are not over saturated and going for the “JOHN WICK” look.
    - Who needs a toilet!! WTF, aren’t we camping in the wild!!
    - You live how you can with what you got.

    If your going to do the northern section of pan American, consider Toktoyaktuk and the Arctic Ocean instead of dead horse.
    After William at Fabsall (thanks for the hookup) fixed up our Tacoma we headed out from Bamfield to Tuk last July. I can’t wait to go back. It’s a stunning drive and the destination is worth every mile. After we left Tuk we carried on through top of the world highway from Dawson City to Chicken Alaska and then south.
    From what I gather deadhorse is just a oil rig camp and you can’t even drive to the ocean. In Tuk you camp right on the ocean and watch the midnight sun sweep across the sky. I wanna go back. Maybe we will share a few miles 👍

    When we travelled to anywhere outside USA, it’s the irony that other countries gas (or diesel) sold is much cheaper than here. Your next trip hopefully encompassing Canada and its provinces. We did Ontario, Montreal, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island but never reach Newfoundland and Labrador, or Greenland as winter was setting in.

    hey guys great videos and just love watching the adventures, I am a fellow Canadian living in Western Australia, I grew up in Surrey BC and I must tell you a huge adventure awaits in the Land of aus, I have circumnavigated this Country in 1 year and its was just enough to touch the surface, there is so much to see in this amzing land and if you ever plan to spread your wings down under hit me up for a heads up on where to go and what to see.     Don’t worry. Carlos and his assistant are great mechanics. May I suggest not to miss checking out Brazil. Especially the coast south of Rio. It’s been one of our favorite countries ranking up there with Colombia and Mexico..

    I went through 13 fuel filters once I hit Colombia on the way south after that on the pan-am. AND a pin hole in the fuel tank so I too got to drop the fuel tank TWICE! Nice to follow your trip.

      Oh man, I hear you. Sometimes, I wish I could develop a system, with two different tanks, to pre-filter the fuel before dumping it into the main tank with the electric pump. Long time ago, my father used a secondary tank with a motorboat fuel filter and an electric pump to achieve that. But it was a carburated F-350, so space was plenty and the systems were a lot more simple. I haven't figure out how to do it yet on my land cruiser.

    My 4.0 liter seems pretty good. Never had a 3.4 or v8 but loved the 22 re and had good luck on the 3.0
    My 4 liter has a chain!
    I have an 8 inch cresent wrench made by the Cresent Company. I found it underground in an old BC mine. Works great.

    Another great video. Along with some maintenance and upgrades the Landcuriser chinook is holding up great. Should try to include Newfoundland in your trip back. Figured you'd drive all the way back to Alaska from Argentina. Stay safe and roll on Landcuriser chinook.

      Matthew is the main editor, and I (Stacey) do the writing for the narration. We did not take classes or anything. Matthew has a bit of acting background but mostly comes by it naturally.
      Our Spanish has improved drastically just being in the countries. Once you need to use the language out of necessity, it becomes easier to learn!

    Happy new year. That was very interesting. But you missed one really important question and that is what earplugs do you use!😂🤣 Having been to some of those countries I know how noisy it is and of course you had a lot of background noise during this video so… Being avid travellers for the last 30 years my wife and I always joke that it’s time to go home for some Vancouver Island quiet🤨🤘

    Hey, good to see that you've made it to Peru! Please, keep us informed on the effectiveness of the fiberglass wrap, seems easier than building a heat shield. Scorching floors is (one of the) the bane of toyotas (& jeeps) in tropical climate. And the other bane, of course, dirty petrol, electric fuel pumps and injection systems...I am also curious to see how your new fuel pump/system does over high altitude. I kept thinking that, once you get to Chile, you'll be confusing the landscape a bit with Vancouver, lol.

      It's made about a 30% improvement on heat if I had to guess. Perhaps a thicker wrap would do more. Fuel pump is also doing well. No lugging up hills or vapor lock at altitude thus far.

      I had some removable floor mats (but they did cover every inch of it) made for my '78 FJ40...fibrous rubber with coconut fiber insulation on the bottom. In the exact dimensions of the factory mats. That, a heat shield and an AC made a huge difference, it became a "Cool Cruiser". It did have some heat shields built over the pipes too, but it wasn't originally enough. The Transfer and the gear box were big thermo trasfer points too...good luck!@@ToyotaWorldRunners

    Cool, you mentioned the engine choice. Good to know that the 3.4 is a viable option and you found parts. The only complaint I heard at the engine remanufacturers/importers is that the 5vz is getting scarce, so it can be expensive to repair. I am seeing more of the 4.0 L V6 (1GR) in SA, replacing the venerable 1FZ/1FZ-FE (too long for a hilux) engine...I am running 3F with pertronix and 1FZ (carb). Probably, my next toyota will have the 1GR-FE. (shame that the v8 doesn't seem to be common in this neck of the woods). Would have love to meet you, but we are a few thousand km East and a couple of difficult borders away. PD: the questions about engine choice are to keep the discussion of safety and the optimization process going, both for you and fellow travelers. Breakdowns and spare part availability are usually two of the main concerns. It seems that the 5VZ is common enough in the Pan-American. That's not only good for you, is good to know for the people that might follow you. I would love to hear your thoughts on the 1GR-FE, since it seems to be the near future...

      +1 for the 1GR-FE Super reliable. Toyota still use them in the 70 series.

      The 1GR is an awesome engine. Seems to work without issue for my friends with Tacomas and makes good power for v6. It wasn't really on my radar when we were building, as the 3.4 came very easily to us. I'd be curious on the dimensions of the 1gr for a smaller pickup. True about the use of it widely throughout SA. The newer Prados and Fortuners all have it, and they are everywhere and always passing us lol

    That struck a chord with me when you said you have your grandpas crescent wrench. When my uncle asked if there was anything I wanted out of his dads (my papas) tool box I said I wanted the snap on screwdriver I got him for free for a relic of an old one he broke that he had in the war. The snap on guy was a tool collector and he was so stoked! And my papa was stoked to get something new for free! He was cheap af. Hahaha

    Problem with that wrap is that it's gonna hold moisture against the exhaust and promote rust over time. I've had a roll sitting on my shelf for a few months now. I'm eventually gonna pull my exhaust and have it powder coated before wrapping it. I'm interested to see how well your exhaust holds up post wrap.

      It's gonna work great these guys freebase led paint, got header on my bug wrapped and it gets soaked in oil,mud ect... it just gets hot and burns off all the moisture

      Valid point about the rust. But this is a solid improvement for now. We'll be upgrading the stainless in the future so not too concerned!

    Was he guessing on the oil pan mod as far as hitting the crank if he cut off to much? Any nerves about that?

      We did the measurements together. Didn't end up being a true rear sump pan like intended, but its a solid improvement.

    That's a great video, guys! Helps get to know you and you're good people, very resourceful and resilient. These real world problems affect all of us, it's how we handle them that makes us different.
    Bummer about the shocks. They're obviously not dangerous or hazardous to ship, as there are millions in shipment. I suspect it's an authoritarianism issue where some low self esteem government worker is flexing muscle because they're otherwise so limited in freedom and jealous of travelers. They'll probably ship eventually but meanwhile some flunkie feels accomplished by throwing a monkey wrench into the clockworks.
    If you find yourself about to drop that tank again, siphoning is your friend. With a small stiff-ish tubing (half inch nylon reinforced pvc works great for me) put the outer end into a glass gallon jug to pull a vacuum with your mouth and establish flow without risking getting gas in your mouth.

    14 mph! Most trucks do not get over 16 miles a gallon unless they’re on highway cruising under 70 mph. That’s very impressive with most of their driving is not on a good Road.

    Why not a Toyota diesel?
    They should be "easy enough" to find in Canada?
    It might cost more to acquire(?) but would give you almost twice the fuel mileage / distance on one tank :D

      The only Toyota diesels I'm a fan of are the bigger 4.2s 1hz, 1hdt etc. The smaller diesels would be a terrible dog in this heavy rig. I've had a couple of them and didn't get any better fuel mileage than my 22re actually. The 1kz is decent, but to make any real power cost a hell of a lot. If we could squeeze a 1HDt in there that would be a dream come true!

      I have more Toyota vehicles than I would say are healthy.
      Have the 2L-T, 1KZ-T, 1KD-FTV, 1HD-FTE, 12H-T and 2H.
      2L-T and 1KZ-t i would stay away from, only indirect injection diesel of those I would consider must be the 2H, but it's lack for piston oil squirters limits it power potential.
      Both the 1HD-FTE and 1KD-FTV is easy enough to convert to mechanical injection or install a stand alone ECU, both works great and reliably.
      1KD-FTV would have more than enough power tuned moderately and would chose that one instead of 1HZ, 1PZ and 2H in a heartbeat. Even an 2KD-FTV qwith either mechanical pump or stand alone ECU will perform quite decent and at least in Europe is extremely easy to get cheap due to being sold in every Hiace over here.
      In such a heavy rig a diesel must be a lot more economical, can't see how a petrol engine uses the same.
      If you compare a small Hilux/4Runner with a 22RE compared to a much larger vehicle with an 1HD-T then the comparison isn't fair. The same large vehicle with a 2F for example would use a lot more.
      By the way, I totally envy you the opportunity you have and the experience this life changing trip gives you.

      The 1KD-FTE I've done some reading on, and it is an interesting option. North America is pretty sparse for them sadly. However we do plan to travel Europe, Asia and Africa in the coming 10 years or so, so long term thinking is advantageous. It would be a pricey endeavour I reckon to get one properly set up with a manual (or auto) and tuned over in Canada.
      Venturing outside the realm of Toyota opens some considerable options... But opens up a wider conversation even still ....
      We're getting a surprising 17mpg on the highway currently which is great as far as I'm concerned with the small price we paid for the engine and it's proven reliability.
      I've yet to do the math on how many years it would take for the economical advantage of a $10K+ diesel swap to take place. Interesting nonetheless. Also, of course, turbo diesel sounds.

      Sadly, the best diesels engines isn't to easy to find here either without shelling out a lot of money. Australia is a the land of the Toyota diesels, but they are getting expensive there as well.
      I guess 17 mpg isn't to bad, but with a direct injection diesel I think you would be between 25 and 30 mpg highway going 60 to 70 mph.
      It shouldn't cost you 10.000 USD either, at least not doing it yourself. Maybe plan for a 1 to 2 weeks pit-stop in Europe to do an engine conversion :)
      An 2KD-FTV could be had for between 500 and 1000 USD, sometimes cheaper if you buy the whole donor vehicle. 2
      Any gearbox from an 1KZ, 2KD and 1KD would bolt on, one here on youtube upgrading from a 2L-T to an 1KD-FTV claims that it will bolt on to his 2L-T gearbox as well. The conversion sin't done yet, so I guess time will tell. If you want to tune it moderately you should consider a flywheel and clutch upgrade from a later model 1KD, that would maybe be another 500 USD.
      Mechanical pump conversion for the 1/2KD would cost you about 100 to 1000 USD depending on what used pump deal you can on the flea marked.
      Alternatively a stand alone fully programmable aftermarket ECU is 1200 USD.
      A better turbo and an intercooler will set you back 500 to 1000 USD.
      If you want to reuse your old gearbox (H151F?) then it would be I guess around 500 to 1000 USD for a machine shop to fabricate you a billet adapter plate.
      So, the price varies depending on the solution you go for, but it is far from 10.000 USD, of course this estimates that you do all the work yourself.
      But the most important, it says Toyota on the rocker cover, you have that sweet low end torque as well as both turbo sounds and turbo "pull" and the sweet, sweet diesel sound :)
      If you arrange the shipping I could probably help you source a diesel engine here in Norway and have it shipped to Canada.

      We get insurance in all the countries that require it. There are a few that don’t require it, so we don’t bother. We do not have health insurance, because the health care system in Latin America has been amazing and very cheap so far. We have no complaints
