There is a rawness to old school martial arts, its not as neat or perfect in its movement, mix that with the 80's culture, hair styles, clothes and music it makes it great movie

I like how philosophically grounded his answers were. Taimak raised a lot of good points in reference to how the remake or sequel would be tackled. Knowing Hollywood, they would regurgitate some failed cookie cutter attempt, while missing the pure essence of the original. Like he said, if they want to initiate a remake, the actor portraying the protagonist needs to have that stage presence, reflecting the desire for the glow, yet without trying to mimic a younger version of Taimak, otherwise it wouldn’t work. This was an excellent interview. If you do have more of the interview that you’ll be releasing, I look forward to seeing how the rest of it goes. Excellent work as always, brother 🥃
My cousins and I use to watch this on HBO in the 80's constantly! We were about 5 years old! It's still great! Viking is right! It's a product of It's time, and new generations do like the film as well.
I kid you not. I’m about to tell you guys some wild things right now, true on my life. I just watched this movie two days ago on 4K UHD on December 27 night, Tokyo Time. Whether that was a day before you uploaded this video or the exact same day, I don’t know, but it’s a coincidence. Imagine how excited I am to find this interview up on Viking Samurai right now. Even wilder, back when I was a late teen/early adult, people kept telling me I looked like Taimak, and surprisingly I always wanted to pin a script to a direct sequel to this movie and star in it as Leroy Green’s son. I was going to call the movie, “Return of the Last Dragon.” The story I never finished (barely even started really) would have been me versus a New York street gang. I can’t recall, but I believe I would have made Sho’nuff’s son my main adversary. This was before Julius Carry’s death in 2008. I would have had both of these guys reprising their roles. My dreams of being an actor have fallen by the wayside because adult life happened. I’m a 42 year old man now, twenty years past my prime for this one, and most of the main cast of this one has passed on. I even wanted the original director Michael Schultz back. As a kid, I was allowed to dream. I have always loved this movie and supported its stars. Thank you David aka VS for putting this up. You made my day!
RIP Vanity She Was Very Beautiful and That Taimik guy like the late great Adolfo Quinones he didn't need no Oscar, Golden Globe or a Shawshank Redemption level script to entertain people he was a freaking Super Saiyan a black one at best
1. A remake could never capture the magic that the original had. It was cheesy, 80s fun with heart. It was just a different time. 2. "I am sick of hearing these bulls#!t Superman stories about the - Wassah! - legendary Bruce Leroy catching bullets with his teeth. Catches bullets with his teeth?!? N*&%a please!" Best line of the movie.
I loved this movie as a child - It was amazing!!! It does not need a remake - It could have a sequel though, with a continuation of the story. That could possibly be good.
The Last Dragon was such an epic film that it almost has a CROW like vibe with Brandon Lee. You can remake it, but it just isn't the same as when Tiamak played that character. He was dope. That movie got me into martial arts and Bruce Lee.And the entire cast was great. Some movies I wish they would just leave alone and not remake. 🥋🙌🏽
The only way this could properly be done is as a continuation of the original story with Taimak still as Leroy at this point in his life after all these years [still mourning Laura that he married and who has died since we last saw Leroy, like Denise/Vanity did in real life (that would be a great way to honor her)]. And there should be old peers and new peers connected to them, new challenges that are tied to the past of the original story, and new foes that are connected to old foes, not a remake/reboot.
Another remake... that won't hold a candle to the original, no thanks. The Last Dragon is a perfect time piece 80's Martial Arts movie. It should stay that way, no cheap imitations.
W..O..W.. finally! Been waiting on VS to do a review of TLD and he upped the game and got the legend Taimak himself. Kudos to Taimak, a real success story out of Hollywood as he works with the youth and never turned to drugs. A remake would be cool but it would have to be in the Cobra Kai vain though without Shonuff, hard to pull off. The whole movie was lightning in a bottle. RIP to Leroy as I used to see him on 7th Ave pre and post him getting shot.
I've spoken about another movie like this and i honestly think for a movie like this to succeed and have it's sequel (not a remake)l, to go with the spirit of what made the original such a loved classic..it would need to be a period piece..It would need to take place in the 80's once again. I think if you turn back the clock to a simpler time like the 80's just like in the first film , you could/would capture that essence that made the original so great and memorable. You would have a catalogue of some of the best music from arguably the greatest decade in music and that's just to start with. A good director, The right actors, a damn good story with an 80's feel to it. It can be done.
AWESOME MOVIE!!!! And a great soundtrack that goes with it! Really had to do my best finding a dvd and sountrack on cd for a reasonable price, but got both a couple of years ago. Also got my son into it, he likes the movie too.
I Would Love To See Them To Continue The Franchise With Taimak Back As Bruce Leroy With A New Story,Nothing Against A Reboot But You Can Never Replace The Characters Of The Original But Hollywood Should Learn From The Karate kid Series And Make It Like Cobra Kai And Have Bruce Leroy Come In And Train The New Leads.
I saw this movie in August of 1986 at Fort Jackson while I was waiting to leave the base, I don't see anyone being aable to pull off a remake of this. Hollyweird needs to Wake Up.
They can definitely do a remake of the Last Dragon but Taimak has to be in the movie either as the star or the Sensei/Grandmaster for one of his students in the film, this movie has a cult following so Taimak has to be in the film if not it won't feel the same without him. It needs to be like Cobra Kai.
If they remade the Last Dragon, I wonder if the main charecter would still be a Bruce Lee fanatic? Would he be a gung fu or mma expert? I wonder if the spirutial stuff would work as well if Bruce Leroy was an mma fighter? A remake or reboot may take out alot of elements that made the original what it was and may not work as well as the original. Too bad we couldnt see Taimak, i know hes still in great shape and guys like me who just turned 51 yo like to see that!
It doesn’t need a remake, it just needs to be shown in cinemas where people can take their ghetto blasters and play music while everyone is watching the movie.
Why not even I think the original is perfect for that time but watching Cobra Kai I would never have thought they would make such a great TV-show of it. Some remakes were not as good as the original, but I would still watch it and made it even better than the original for sure with special effects of today. But then again you need the wright actors to make it as good and sometimes it just so bcz of that time it doesn't feel the same. For me going to the cinema in the 80s was like magic, now I have a cinema in my own living room watching movies on 200inch screen.... When was the last time I watch a movie in the cinema 25 years ago I think lol....
The Last Dragon, is a Comedy... with a Martial Arts theme. The best thing about the film, are the Villain's.. and the Music. Taimak's character, is a clueless goofball (intentionally). One could say that it has some similarities, to "Big Trouble in Little China". A little comically "over the top", and not really that much martial arts being demonstrated... but fun acting performances, and a fun storyline. Trying to remake a film like this... would be like trying to capture a lightning in a bottle. First, you would have to find all the right actors, able to be both funny and extremely expressive. A new story would be a challenge... to fit into todays modern times. And due to the advanced martial arts in modern films... people would be expecting a lot more complexity in the fights... especially if retains ties to Chinese Kung Fu. But the biggest hurdle, would be the Misandrist Elite, that run current "Misandrist-Wood". They wouldnt allow it to reach the screen... if it didnt have a butch (ugly) female lead... or a female that came out as being Superior to the male leads. But heck... just finding actors today... that actually have acting talent... seems like an impossible challenge. The people they have been putting on the big screens in the last +15 yrs... are Wooden, Have no depth of Expression, nor any Charisma, at all. Also... Since modern day reality has became a Total W0ke Clown Show... its made things even worse Anyway... I enjoy the film, As Is. Its part of my DVD / Blueray Collection
Taimak sounds like he's more awake as to the craziness that we see in Hollywood these days. I mean it's always been there but now it's becoming more obvious.
I don't want a remake BUT a sequel and even though a handful of the cast are no longer around maybe the characters got married had a daughter and slip in Zendaya who can act and sing, she reminds me of Vanity I mean why not. Its gonna be difficult to get a villian worthy of being in the movie.
@@shaisolomon1059 what you’re referring to was a mock poster. There was plans of a sequel as early as 1986. But there were some factors that didn’t work out.
My honest opinion, I don’t see any black actors that can fit any of these characters roles in this time in life, not unless there is race swap evolve, like the karate kid with Jayden Smith, my next opinion is, I would just leave it alone, no remake
It was made for the right time at the right place and that's the era it belongs in not this one so many things that used to be great and every time they get touched by this day and age it loses that something that made you want to sit down and watch and enjoy it at least here there was in-depth action and the last thing you'd want to see from something like this is to be reduced to a comedy and then flop taimak he was a very good clone of the legendary Bruce Lee the greatest of all time and what made this group was that it followed 10 years you know after the era if it were to be remade in this day and age the message that it once had just wouldn't be there to be completely off topic it's reminisce of the good times without political politics ruining it
The Last Dragon was magic for the 80's but imagine it remade in 2025? With the garbage music of today and maybe some of those artists in the film. Would it be as fun or have the right people for the roles of Bruce Leroy, Sho'Nuff etc? Yes it could work for sure! But equally it could be a disaster as they say 'better to pickle kippers than eat Count dookie pie'.
It simply cannot be remade. A sequel would be awesome with Taimak in it, but I'm allset with another woke-remake disaster. If they remake it now Taimak's character will be trans-jewish-dwarf, or some bullshit.
nothing screams NO THANK YOU like another remake of a movie that doesn't need one.ugh..Over and over again. Hollywood has to rely on old properties because they know they'll make easy money..
There's no need to, and the era of Martial Arts magic in film is sadly over because of the UFC and MMA. The genre and the themes that made the Last Dragon what it is was the time. It's a totally different time and the only people who would watch this are old people.
The Sequel would be better for modern day time. Michael Trapson as Leroy Green The 3rd... rebellious after his mama Laura Charles death...well Vanity passed 🤔🤔🤔🤔 make sense..Sho Nuff died in a prison riot, Eddie Akkadian into cyber attacks, no remake it won't be the same the music the vibe...the magic....never can be remade
Michael j white We'll make a good candidate for the remake of the last dragon movie Michael j white will be a best candidate. For the remake of the last dragon Leroy
A remake is a bad idea, because they seldom surpass the original. Think of the movie remake of The Crow, and that was a great idea it was. When a movie is a classic, and it endures through time, don’t remake it! I can think only of one remake that was in a way as good as the original, and it is that of George Romero zombie movie Dawn of the Dead (1978) remade (plot idea) in 2004 by director Zack Snyder. The first movie did not age well because of the makeup and unequal acting. The remake is great, but the original may have more depth in its scenario.
Hollywood needs to stop! Can they not make a million movies just like it with a different name and plot? Are they that big of hacks with zero creative talent(YES)? I wouldn't even watch it until maybe years after it flops.
Movies aren’t made the same way they were made in the 90s and before. The film industry is dead due to computers and politics which have destroyed creativity.

Taimak sounds like he's more awake as to the craziness that we see in Hollywood these days. I mean it's always been there but now it's becoming more obvious.
The movie is perfect dont ruin it . There is no more creativity nothing all the remakes
I don't want a remake BUT a sequel and even though a handful of the cast are no longer around maybe the characters got married had a daughter and slip in Zendaya who can act and sing, she reminds me of Vanity I mean why not.
Its gonna be difficult to get a villian worthy of being in the movie.
Wish they made a sequel. They were supposed to I heard? Revenge of the Shogun with Tupac
I really don’t see what people see in this film. But I may be wrong. Even after seeing the trailer, I still can’t see that this is good.
Leave it alone, it is a classic that needs no remake, look what they did to karate kid.
It was made for the right time at the right place and that's the era it belongs in not this one so many things that used to be great and every time they get touched by this day and age it loses that something that made you want to sit down and watch and enjoy it at least here there was in-depth action and the last thing you'd want to see from something like this is to be reduced to a comedy and then flop taimak he was a very good clone of the legendary Bruce Lee the greatest of all time and what made this group was that it followed 10 years you know after the era if it were to be remade in this day and age the message that it once had just wouldn't be there to be completely off topic it's reminisce of the good times without political politics ruining it
Michael Jai White
Why isn't he on camera? That's bizarre.
Hello, Viking Samurai. Honestly, The Last Dragon doesn't need a remake. For the most part, Hollywood is creatively limp.
TERRANCE OUT
It simply cannot be remade. A sequel would be awesome with Taimak in it, but I'm allset with another woke-remake disaster. If they remake it now Taimak's character will be trans-jewish-dwarf, or some bullshit.
Hey don't give them ideas
nothing screams NO THANK YOU like another remake of a movie that doesn't need one.ugh..Over and over again.
Yeah just leave it alone call it the next last dragon with taimak his son becomes a master.
Bad idea remaking the classic Hollywood have no idea as usual
The Last Dragon is a product of its time and could not and should not be remade.
Movies aren’t made the same way they were made in the 90s and before. The film industry is dead due to computers and politics which have destroyed creativity.
Dude has been remaking this movie for the last 25 years 😅
Please don't remake this classic. They could not improve upon it. Especially with the caliber of actors we have now days. Please just leave it alone.
