I noticed for all these old races from all the networks, the announcers are just as iconic and legendary as the drivers and tracks. I forgot a few. These all bring back better times and days.

Today's fans that go to talladega dont know the struggles of going to a race back in the 80's and 90's when the races were in june and July. The temps were between 85°-95° and you would sweat a couple of pounds off. Thank your lucky stars that they moved the dates to where the weather is much more comfortable.
I remember Neil Bonnett when he was in the booth while recovering from an injury a season or two before this, making a joke that it was so hot that day that the robins were using oven mitts to catch their worms outside of his hotel window that morning.
Yet the cars were still quite safe considering they were hitting concrete walls for the most part. By the late 80s seat technology was rapidly improving, the restraints were quite modern and the roll cage had pretty much been perfected. Still, drivers side hits (got Bobby) as well as fire and eventually sudden stops would be the defining issue. With all this said, drivers did suffer a lot of broken bones (especially legs) back then because the restraints were ultimately limited allowing arms and legs to flail about during a wreck. Even so, all things considered, safety was at or above the standard of the era relative to F1 and Indycar. These cars with soft walls/hans devices and injuries would have been cut by 80 or 90% probably.
Do you guys have the 1986 Talladega race that Bobby Hillin won? It was great seeing him on the Dale Jr Download a few weeks back and that was his only win of his career!
18:09 glad to see we were still dunking on Formula Un back in '88 😂😂😂😂 I also feel like I'm a bad luck charm for DW. I haven't watched many of his races, but the ones I do watch, he dominates all day only to have bad luck right at the end. I can say I've seen Kenny Schrader win, but I want to see DW win now. Awesome race 🤘
Darrell was pretty fast at the plate tracks during this time but kept getting outran till the 89 Daytona 500 when he won on fuel mileage. Schrader or Earnhardt woulda got that one had there been another caution late... Also, Schrader was a pretty good wheelman so it's pretty surprising that he was only able to win a handful of Cup races in his career, particularly since he took over that car Richmond dominated in...

The only bad thing about these old races is i end up talking like Chris Economaki for the rest of the day.
lol
don't feel ashamed ,i talk like Ken Squire for the rest of the week

Nothing will ever top the bad ass roar from the old H-pipe exhaust systems. That’s what a racecar is supposed to sound like!
totally . they roar down the backstretch at Talladega
💯💯💯
Nascar was way better back then it's not the same
Back then y’all were crying about the restrictor plates 😂
Exactly. Now is awful.

And by the way, they mandated restrictor plates at the beginning of 1988. So the race you watched was a restrictor plate race!

1:05:07 Hearing the crowd reaction to Davey Allison driving his dad’s car always gets me choked up.
👍
Ken Schrader's first win, Harry Hyde's last win. But the main thing is the racing was pretty exciting back then.
Finally, a video of some real cars and real racing.

It's shocking the lack of safety features these cars had compared to today's machines.
Well, certain people had to get hurt & die for us to get to where NASCAR is today as far as safety innovations...
@vinewood8295 Sad but true unfortunately 😔

Yeah. That's why I get mad when people say they miss the old NASCAR. No one should have to risk dying in this sport.

nah Dale had more fans at the track than any another driver. Waltrip was the big mouth that complained about everything ,lol ✌
