I love how many veteran broadcasters are involved back in these early 80s races - guys like Bob Jenkins, Mike Joy, Dick Berggren, Al Michaels, Ken Squier of course, I'm sure Rick Benjamin was on the call for the 1982 Pocono 500 recently uploaded? So cool to not only to see the legendary drivers but also hear the legendary announcers 😊
The commentators paint the picture. These guys helped build NASCAR into what it became when I was a kid in the 90s and it was starting to explode. They'll always be remembered
Ahh you mean the "good ole days" when conservative weren't told to be constantly outraged over a new boogyman each week? Yeah I miss those days too. I wish they'd all get off X and Facebook and do something with their pathetic lives.
Stars and bars are not offensive to this "Billy Yank"!! Its our history!! Thank you for all these videos!! Bring back memories!!! I'll have to look to see if any of those semi truck races from Pocono my dad took me too..Hearing and seeing the "Cup" cars come around to take the green is amazing enough, but when those semis came to take the green with the black smoke coming from both pipes in the air roaring and shaking the ground have been imprinted in my mind since the early 70s!!! THANK YOU once again for all these!!!!
I've wondered this for years now ever since I first saw this on ESPN Classic back about 25 years ago, does the broadcast of the first 143 laps before the rain showed up just not exist anymore?
If the broadcasts were on tape or film, it might well have been destroyed or lost. Lots of old BBC TV shows ended up getting destroyed in the 1970s simply through a lack of storage space for all the old reels/tapes!
@@HeyItsAJOmega As a classic tv and movie fan, I'm sadly all too aware of all the sad stories like ABC disposing of the DuMont Television Network's kinescopes and videotapes in the East River in the dead of night in the 1970's to make more room in their storage facility.
@@kharnthebetrayer1575 It's certainly not present these days. There's an upload that at first glance appears to possibly be it, but it's actually the Fall race named the Walter W. Hodgdon American 500 rather than the Carolina 500 from the spring (the upload is incorrectly titled the "Walter W. Hodgdon Carolina 500").
@@jessiehenry5405 - Yep, 300 to 350 is more than enough. You can even have a "500" race with some creativity (it's 500km/312 miles, Phoenix has done this a ton). For me the ideal is... · 200-250 miles for half-miles · Under 300 miles for the bigger short tracks · Up to 350 for the mile-long ones · 400 for the slow bigger tracks, 500 for the faster ones · The World 600 is fine because it's a gimmicky race (NASCAR tried to one-up the Indy 500 decades ago, very silly stuff)
My friend and I drove to that race twice from PA. We jumped a fence after the race to get our picture taken with Richard Petty. His response was, you cats are nuts. That one memory I will cherish forever
Yes it was. Most of Richard's wins were on CBS. You can account the Wild World of Sports entries as well which were snippets of races but outside of this most of them were on CBS!

Gotta love them Squireisms.
You Don't see races that are postponed for a Week anymore the way the Schedule is Today
Hey NASCAR. I didn’t see any imagery that offended me on this video. I miss the good ole days.

nascar became woke. but it will end.
Love these old races! Thanks for the uploads!
I agree

That,s not the Stars and Bars That,s the Southern Cross S&B is my icon completely different flag.
Would love one of the Richmond weekends to go to Rockingham for 2025
Texas should leave for Rockingham. All this talk about Us leaving a Richmond race Is a MISTAKE
Heck ya.

I’ve seen the 1st part of this race on here , now for the last part !!

Another great upload with great picture quality also.
Dang, knocked it outta the park again. GRANDSLAMMER.👏
The King reigns supreme this day.
Races back then: 500 miles/492 laps, this means halfway would've been 246 laps. In the mid-90s they were reduced to 400 miles/393 laps.
One-mile speedways never deserved 500-milers, this stuff was ridiculous!
@@DanArnets1492One-Mile Tracks Were Meant More For 300 Miles

Look at that Firebird pace car
Awesome Bill came close to snookering the King. What a finish after a wild day.

Ronnie thomas actually has that car
Bill Elliott looked so young.
Buick And Chevrolet Dominated At Rockingham From The 80s And Early 90s
Just Chevrolet Buick Last Win At Rockingham Came In March of 1984
Chevrolet Won 9 In The 80s
Buick won 5
Pontiac Won 4
Ford Won 3
Oldsmobile Won Once
18:07 Butch Mock then Ruttman’s bad crash
North AMERICAN Stock Cars! No toyotas! Yeah, I know, but the profits still go to Japan.
Toyota is More American Than Ford Or Gm And not all profits go to Japan
Bristol tire Package + Rockingham = Championship race 🤔 maybe slme rain 🌧️?
Real Nascar racing unlike the current Iroc cup series
The Only thing that offends me is Nascar and their "values".
Chances are, I was at this race
Richard Petty’s only win on ESPN.
