- In this video I am photographing Bee Wolf Wasps in flight. I take both stills and video, and I use the OM1mkII, plus my new 90mm F3.5 macro lens. Photographing a small flying insect in flight is quite difficult, but here I show that with perseverance, it is possible to achieve some good results.
Music in the video is from TH-cam Audio Library :

Track 2 :
Dream Escapes
Artist - The Tides
Fantastic, footage and variety of shots.
I got a decent shot of a wolf wasp with bee in flight about 5 years ago using the predecesor to the OM-1, 300mm f4 and 1.4TC. It's much easier than using the 90mm macro. Fantastic working distance (1.2m minimum) and the wasp pretty much fills the frame.
For bees wasps and butterflies I prefer the 300mm with or without the 1.4TC to the 90mm. If I were to use the 90mm I would use a flash and macro difuser for more detailed and greater DOF shots.
Thanks for the kind comment. Using the 300mm F4 is a vaild point.
Roger, I was captivated, great photography and a really interesting subject. You clearly showed features we would not notice in such detail, well done.
Thanks Johnathan, for such a nice comment. Glad you enjoyed it.
Interesting subject and shown well.
Thanks Mike. Bit of a record for me. Shot it on Wednesday and edited it the next day. I wash I could produce them all as quick as that.
Both the slow-motion video and the stills are fascinating!
Thank you for commenting Louis . Glad you like it. The slow motion does so some fascinating behaviour that you do not see at normal speed.
I love the videos of those fascinating wasps. I have recently tried the same thing with Ivy Bees in my lawn. I need to improve my technique! At 69 I’m less keen on laying down but after seeing your results I will try. May need a hoist up…
Lovely video and photos! The lock on and focus is one of the features I love about this camera. No mat for you. The slow mo video is great.
Thanks for the kind comment. Glad you liked the video and the slow mo.
Super little presentation and some super footage. Going back a few years now but I remember it well.
Thanks David. I was quite pleased with this one. It is a great location. You probably went with Richard ?
Great work! I used to use the 40-150 f2.8 and a 1.4x tc for insects in flight when I had an OM-1, that worked really well.
Cheers Richard. In hindsight, I may have been better using that, or even putting a converter on the 90mm macro.
@@rogerhance5883 That 90mm macro looks great. My partner still has the OM-1 and I might see if I can borrow it from her!
Wonderful work, Roger!
Thanks for the kind comment Frank. Its much appreciated.
Another great video Roger. Something a bit different but you did really well with the video and the photos. Well done👍
Thanks Richard. Glad you liked it.
Awesome footage!!! A big LIKE for your video.
Thanks a lot. Glad you liked it. 👍
Amazing! I loved it and learned a lot. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind comment and glad you liked it.
Brilliant photos and video Roger 👍
Thanks for commenting. Glad you liked it.
fantastic video, Roger! Both the videos you got and the photos are great. Gives me something new to try.
Thanks for commenting. Glad you liked it, and that its given you an idea of something new to try.
Another fascinating video Roger, I really enjoyed it
Thanks for commenting Brian. Glad you liked it.
Phenomenal video in images.
Thanks for the very kind words . Glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Roger and happy new year. Thanks for this video as I’m about to embark on the OM systems journey and I specialise in macro in flight shots but I’ve been using the Canon R5 and more recently the Nikon Z8/9 cameras. (I’ve also just started a TH-cam channel) and I’ve heard so much about this system and have always wanted to try it out but have been a little worried at the full frame vs 2x crop factor ISO difference but I’m hoping to be blown away. The weight difference may make a slight difference but I’m not sure as the 105 Nikon z lens is not heavy and the z8 is not massively heavy as well
Thanks for commenting, and Happy New Year to you. There is always a trade of between full frame vs M4T, but for me, the advantages are vastly more than the disadvantages. Dont be scared to push the ISO with the OM1. With the nosie reduction in Lightroom/Camera Raw, it really is not an issue any more.
Great footage and photos
Thanks for the kind comment. Much appreciated.
What a cool macro project! This worked out really well.
Thanks for the very kind comment.
Excellent quality Roger. I did these when I had an EM1 X too and had trouble getting AF to lock on. I ended up using Manual AF ! I'll have to have another go with the OM1 and the 90mm macro. Not sure if I'm too late now. They make excellent subjects. Didn't know they would sting people.
Thanks for commenting. The EM1X was a good camera, but the OM1mkII locks on a hold focus a lot better. To be honest, I have never heard of them stinging people either.
Great video with some great results Roger.
Thank you James. Glad you liked it.
Fascinating subject and great images and video
Cheers Barrie. Hope you still on the mend ,and recovering well.
@@rogerhance5883 getting there thank you. The old heart is still beating 😀

As always Roger, an excellent video.
Thanks for the very kind comment and for watching my videos. They are fun to do, but it involves a lot of work.
Amazing gruesome action, nature can be so cruel. A very interesting subject thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for commenting Mark. Glad you liked it.
Thanks for the video Roger. Superb shots but I particularly like the shot head on at about 8 mins 30. Every days a school day with you as I’d never heard of a wolf wasp. As a keen gardener I will not be encouraging them. I’d prefer to see bees on my produce.
Stunning Roger, amazing stills and video, a real pleasure to watch. Top work 👍
Thanks John. I always appreciated your comments. Glad you liked it.
@@rogerhance5883 Always appreciate you sharing your knowledge and results Roger, very inspiring.
@@johnpark8297 Thanks John
Amazing
Many thanks for the kind comment Michael.
So that’s what digs those little holes! Lots of those around Lord’s Piece in Sussex. Great video!
Thanks for commenting. You do get them throught the UK, so very likely its the same in Sussex.
Very nice video and excellent photos! Thanks for posting.
Cheers for the very kind comment. Glad you liked it.
Very nice subject Roger, I’ve never seen wasp like that thanks
Thanks for the kind comment Alan. They are amazing insects.
Nice one Roger as you say, difficult subject but you nailed it!
Thanks for commenting Steve. Much appreciated.
You are always an inspiration Roger! We're getting into a cold time here in Eastern Canada, but I've bookmarked this for late spring 2025 so I can have a go. I have OM1-2 now and a 60mm Macro. Would my 40-150 2.8 Pro work with a 2x converter for this sort of thing do you think?
Thank you for the very kind comment. Its much appreciated. The 40-15mm F2.8 plus a converter should work fine. I would probably use the 1.4 rather than the 2x. Not that the 2x converter is bad, but when you go from 1.4 to 2x you loose 2 stops of light. Hope this helps, and thanks for the kind comment.
@@rogerhance5883 If I'm not too far away, perhaps I could use flash? My problem is I bought a 2X converter when I first got started with Olympus and my longest lens was the 40 to 150. So I can't really afford to buy a 1.4 times. Maybe I'll see one used somewhere here in Canada. Once again your quick replies are fantastic. The amount of time you give to the community is amazing. Please keep it up!
@@treebeard909 Using your 2x converter will be fine. The reason I said to use a 1.4 converter is that I assumed you had one. Most people, when buying converter, go for the 1.4 first, and then buy the 2x after that. You will still only be F5.6 with the 2x, so thats fine. Personally, I would not use flash. Unless you can get it dead right, it will darken the background. Also with flash, you cannot do a burst mode because of the recycling time, so my advice would be to increase the ISO and use natural light. I tend to avoid flash like the plague, but thats mainly because I am not confident with it. Hope this helps.
@@rogerhance5883 Thanks again. Good advice!
Stunning images Roger, well done.
Thanks for the very kind comment. Glad you liked it.
Excellent video and stills and good information on technique
Cheers Rob. Glad you liked it. I always try to give as much information as possible.
@rogerhance5883 Unfortunately, Roger the Bee Wasps haven't made it up to the Scottish Borders yet
@@robwat7717 Thats a pity. Do you usually get them up there ?
@rogerhance5883 no not yet they seem to be still in the South but moving northward
@@robwat7717 Fingers crossed, you will have them soon. 🤞
Saw these at Minsmere ,good info and video thanks for sharing.
Thanks for commenting. I have also seen them at Minsmere. They are amazing creatures.
@@rogerhance5883 Yes one of the volunteers was filming (canon) via a long telescope macro lens hooked up to a monitor ,very interesting. I believe they were Sand wasp .something like that. will send photo to you Via message if ok?
great video..
Thank you. Glad you liked it.
What would it be like if he used the MC 20tc or MC1.4tc with the 90mm f/3.5 for greater magnification and focus from a further distance.
Thats a very good comment Anthony. In hindsight, I should have tried that. As you so rightly say, it would have given me a greater working distance.
Did you try the subject recognition and tracking? The bird option works well ofr insects in flight. Subject recognition works also for video, but I don't know if also with slow motion. In my experinece 1/2000th sec may also be good for insect in flight, the blurred wings are desirable for me, while the body stays reasonably sharp. Of course a matter of taste.
Thanks for commenting. I was using bird selection in the subject detection menu. It seems to pick and insect up . Not sure the subject dection works in slow motion because when you change to slow motion it goes into manual focus.
Another cracking video Roger with some marvellous captures. Have you considered using high speed flash to compensate for low light? I had intended to do so this year but the weather was rubbish.
Thanks for commenting. To be honest, I dont get on with flash , so tend to avoid it. I agree that this year, the weather has been rubbish.
You’re welcome. Would love to have a go at producing a video myself 😊
Its worth having a go at but quite a steep learning curve, or I found it so. I look back at some of my first videos and shudder at how bad they are. ☹
❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks. Much appreciated.
Another brilliant video Roger , Do you always do your own video or do you ever take someone with you from actually film your self As I thought I saw your camera pan you, keep up the excellent videos
Thanks for commenting Johnny. I do all my video myself. It would be so much easier and quicker if someone just filmed me, but unfortunately, I dont have anyone to do it. The panning is done in pos production in DaVinci Resolve using something called `Dynamic Zoom`.
Thanks Roger. Hope to have a go at bees in the garden if only the weather would improve. The only insect we have in its normal numbers greenfly😪
@@thomasreed49 We have very few in our garden. Thats why I have to go further afield. The fact there has been so few butterflies and insects is worrying.
Hello Roger ! Wonderful piece of work. Your channel is full of information. I enjoy a lot.
Need your kind suggestion: for bird photography I am using Nikon D500 Nikon 300 f4 with 1.4 TC. I am planning to switch to OM-1 but it’s expensive, I wish to save for 300 f4 pro I am looking for used ones. Do you think EM-1 II or EM-1 iii are good options? and can perform 70% percent of what OM-1 does ?
Reg: EM-1 II I see that it has Procapture but it doesn’t have Bird Eye focus that EM-1 iii has
I have an option of buying user EM-1 II. Do you think AF speed of EM-1 II is good enough to focus on birds ?
Or I should wait for EM-1 iii or wait more for OM-1 to cool down.
Kindly let me know.
- Rahul Deshpande (India)
Thanks for commenting Rahul, and glad you liked the content. The 300mm F4 is a great lens, and I wish I had been in a situation to be able to have kept it. (I had to sell it to help finance the 150-400) My advice regarding cameras is to NOT buy the EM1mkIII. Its a good camera, but nowhere near as good as the OM1. The difference is like this : The EM1mkIII is a mid range Ford, the OM1 is a brand new Lamborgini. There is that much differnce. Maybe buy a second hand OM1 if you trade in your old gear ? Hope this helps, and thanks for commenting on the video.
@@rogerhance5883 Thank you Sir ! Will surely keep looking for OM-1, yes need to trade old gear for sure. Thanks again!!
Bonjour
Encore et comme toujours une vidéo très interessante.
Est il possible de filmer à 60 images/seconde et de ralentir en post production (pour atteindre la même qualité)
Bientôt une vidéo youtube sur les réglages de l'OM-1 pour la vidéo???
Merci.

Hello
Again and as always a very interesting video.
Is it possible to film at 60 frames/second and slow down in post production (to achieve the same quality)
Soon a youtube video on the OM-1 settings for video???
Thanks.
Brilliant photos and video Roger 👍
Thanks for the very kind comment. Its much appreciated.
