Photographing Kingfishers at RSPB Lakenheath Fen using the OM1mkII with the 150-400mm lens
In this video I go to RSPB Lakenheath Fen on the Norfolk/Suffolk border to photograph Kingfishers. I use the OM1mkII combined with the 150-400mm lens and photograph from the Mere Hide. Shooting both stills and video, I get some nice footage , filmed in slow motion, of a Kingfisher killing and eating a small Perch.

    Beautiful images and the blurred background makes it pop out. When you were shooting the focus stack from the side of the butterfly, what was you focus differential?

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the kind comment. Off the top of my head, I cannot remember. It will not show the differential in the metadata. Generlly speaking, if I am photographing sideways on and the wings are fold reasonably parallel to the body. , -a differential of 2 or 3 will be fine. I photographed a Popular Hawk moth a few weeks ago, and the wings on that were out, so a lot more depth of focus needed. On that occasion, I used a differntial of 6. It depends on the subject. Hope this helps.

      Thanks for commenting. Its unlikely its the lens, although having a lens with a faster aperture would alow you to drop the ISO. generally speaking, Topaz De Noise will know any digital nosie on the head. You cannot but DeNosie as a stand alone piece of software any more. You have to buy Topaz Ai, which has Topaz Sharpen Ai, Topaz Gigapixel and DeNoise all in one piece of software. I agree that you cannot raise or lower the circular filters like the Lee System , but the LiveND Grad on the OM1mkII will take car of that. I still like Lee filters, and used them for many years, its just that I find the Kase filters quicker to use, and take up far less space in my camera bag.

    Wonderful footage as usual, Roger! Re: the branch, Apart from it Bering rather thick, somebody had na awful idea to saw off the minor twigs, rather than simply snap them off, which makes it super obvious than it's been prepared by a human, doesn't look natural at all. But as you said, it's not a photo hide per se but rather a birdwatching hide, so can't really blame them, although it wouldn't cost them any extra effort if they did that. Amazing how easy it is to obtain quality kingy shots in these fixed hides. I remember how back in the day, photographing from me portable hide I had to prepare everything grom scratch, from careful recon job to finding the right spot to removing lots and lots of loose reeds and rushes obscuring the branch, so that the frame, both background and foreground would be neat and clean, which at times cost me my trousers because my waders proved too short for the pond...😂 Fun times.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for commenting. I agree that the branch is not really set up for photographers, - more for birdwatchers, - but that is fine. After all, it is an RSPB reserve. I mentioned in the video that a lot of shots of Kingfishers that you see where they are emerging from a dive with fish, are taken at commercial hides. Most, but by no means ALL. I know a freind of mine in Scotland who has beautiful shots of Kingfishers emerging after a dive, but they are all taken at his OWN private set up that he made himself. He has put in a lot of time and work (as you obviously did in the past) and got some amazing shots. Unfortunately, I do not have any areas in Essex where I could set something up myself. Maybe one day. Once again, thanks for commenting.

    Lovely video Roger I have been to that hide on a few occasions with no luck . I did have a great session with fellow TH-camr Steve Hedges down the path from there with the Bearded Tit though one January . Our best two hour session with those guys . Awesome reserve . Excellent Video Roger, I use the 60mm with a 250 Raynox Lens and the Olympus Twin Flash. With the flash I can go up to F16 to get a Black background, which makes the Image pop out!!!! Some people don’t like it , but if I want natural blurred back ground I drop the F number. I have tried stacking had some success but as you stated if the insect moves it corrupts the final image. I have watched your videos a lot and gained a lot of knowledge, thanks again Graham Cox.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the kind comment Graham, and I am glad you enjoy my videos. The 60mm is a great lens, although a month or so aga I treated myself to the 90mm, which is even better. As you say, black backgrounds can produce stricking images whcih really make the subject `pop` but I prefer a more natural looking background, so only use my twin flash as a fill in. Once again, thanks for the kind comment.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for the kind comment. I do crop, adjust levels, and sometimes tweek the image slightly. By this I mean `dodging` some of the shadows to lighten, and `burn in` the highlight in areas that are a bit bright. Generally speaking, the Jpegs do not need much done to them.

    As an IT person with a camera: real art lies in composition, in understanding your rig, and using its functions to create the desired result. That is how photography can be art. But depending on post-production is taking your supposed art into something artificial. As fake as a beautiful ginger lady with turquoise dyed hair, fake freckles and layers of lipstick and maskara. Be natural. AI isn't photography. I take endless photo cliché sunsets, because the Atlantic Ocean is 300 yards from me. I cannot often visit the Kgalagadi to shoot prides of lion, or to arrest an elusive African wildcat or caracal. Visiting the same boring beauty of Scotland or Wales never happened in the past 63 years for me; will I ever get to see it? Thanks for the countless boringly beautiful photos. At least now I can see it.

    Fantastic, footage and variety of shots. I got a decent shot of a wolf wasp with bee in flight about 5 years ago using the predecesor to the OM-1, 300mm f4 and 1.4TC. It's much easier than using the 90mm macro. Fantastic working distance (1.2m minimum) and the wasp pretty much fills the frame. For bees wasps and butterflies I prefer the 300mm with or without the 1.4TC to the 90mm. If I were to use the 90mm I would use a flash and macro difuser for more detailed and greater DOF shots.
