    You could look at it this way. The Python is one of the best looking revolvers out there; it's also well made. For me, though, I would pay the same price for a 686 if I had to because it's actually a better shooter, I think. IT feels better in the hand and is easier to operate, I think, with the cylinder latch, etc. I prefer the 686.

    • @demetriuscooksey7147
      @demetriuscooksey7147 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      My first handgun was a Python, and being a dumb kid I traded it for an semi auto pistol which I still have to this day. But after years of lamentation and not being able to afford to replace it, as they have quadrupled in price since, I replaced it with a nice Smith and Wesson Model 19 because my Dad has one and I've always really like it. His is a 6" and mine is a 4. I like the 19 as a shooter and on the hip even better than my old Python. Groups aren't quite as tight but i can shoot a little more accurately when shooting quicker or multiple targets.

      Something weird happens at 9:26. Notice (if you slow the footage down to 0.5 or 0.25x, that the something hits way faster than the bullet should have, before you hear the gunshot. This is notable because the subsequent shot, fired to the same distance, hits after the audible gunshot, making it seem like there was something that went far supersonic, to impact the target (easily at 20 yards away) far quicker than the gunshot was heard (probably no more than 4 yards away), 1/5 the distance. Upon second watch, it actually makes a small visible ding in the target before the sound, but then soon after, a larger impact occurs or something and makes the ding brighter and more noticeable - which fits the timing of the other shots.
      Theory - the bullet impacted a small particle or something in the barrel, and accelerated it supersonically, slightly slowing the bullet, and that impacted first in the same location as the trailing bullet? Or am i crazy.

Of course, I can't shoot like Hickok, but this gun made my groups look fairly decent, especially compared to the two polymers on either side of me that were flinging ammo. No regrets in buying this little gun. Great review Hickok

Thanks for showing me the potential of the 3" barrel. I was sold on the 4 inch until I watched you nailing 80 yard targets witht the 3 inch. Most people think you need a long barrel for accuracy.... @SUFFOCATIONFAN, Barrel length is WAY overrated in terms of velocity and such. Let me know if you ever get killed because you shoot a bad guy with a 3" barrel instead of a 4". I'll pay your funeral costs. Both guns are a great, but the Smith edges out the Ruger for me if I'm going to have just one of the two.
    If you are looking at it strictly for hunting, I'd maybe go with the 4" or even 6" barrel.

    The 686 would be extremely reliable, and a very good shooter. I did some quick googling and wasn't able to find an ankle holster big enough to fit it though. Might have to have something made custom. As I'm sure many others would agree it is sometimes hard to find good accessories if you want to carry something larger. My fiance has dreams of carrying a 5'' 1911. She's 4'9'', so I guess if she can manage that, anything is possible.

    Hickok45 + S&W .357 3" revolver + Steel Targets = Awesome Great Fun. Hickok you shot that 686 better today than I have even seen you shoot your Glocks. That gun definately should be your "go to" gun when the SHTF!

      You caught that enthusiasm in him too, huh? He respects and reveres the 44's, etc, but there was that element of fun with this 3-incher that he advocates shooters should always have

      44 Mag is a great round for ultimate ft lbs hitting power, but if you don't reload, it's expensive to shoot/ practice with.
      Conversely, .357 magnum provides more than ample ft lbs hitting power of its own, yet range practice can be much more affordable shooting .38 special or even .357 over the .44.
      That said if my desire to keep building up my .38/.357 ever fades, I'll then move up to the .44 mag platform.

    • @arcocola8183
      @arcocola8183 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Revolver Den -my problem at the range is once I pop the .357 loads it's just hard to step down & hit 38 specials they feel like shooting a BB gun or something it's really different. Cheaper but less thrilling. Same with my .44. Expensive but really really fun

    Yeah, I have a 4" 686 + version, and couldn't be happier with it. I got mine very lightly used, and in excellent condition. I don't know if the previous owner had it worked over or whether S&W just outdid themselves with this one, but the trigger (double and single action) is absolutely the best I've ever shot in any firearm. I know that this is an older video, but as a shooter for the last fifty years, my advice is that everyone (that SHOULD have a gun) should have at least one good .357 revolver. My first one was a Ruger 4" Security Six, and it was a great gun. I also agree with Hickock that a 3" is a good choice, but a 2" to 4" is ideal. Unless you want one primarily for hunting or long range plinking, you don't need anything longer. I carry mine when I'm out on the homestead because we've got a lot of critters such as snakes (I keep the first two chambers loaded with shot shells), wild hogs, puma, black bear, and of course, coyotes and feral dogs. I usually take a carbine as well, but it's not always handy when you are out working on something. I love all kinds of handguns, and prefer an auto pistol for a lot of things, but a good .357 is hard to beat as an all around handy sidearm. If I lived in BIG bear country, I'd probably go with something bigger, but for actual carry, a 3" to 4" .357 is about as heavy as I feel like hauling around, and when you balance the weight and ability for smooth, fast and accurate shots, the .357 is hard to beat.

    Thanks hickok45 für your support. I was looking for my first revolver but I had no idea what model, no idea what frame. I made the decision for Smith&Wesson, but unfortunately there is no sales support here in Switzerland. Additionally - since a few years - it's very complicated to get guns. I was looking your videos and due to that - with your help - I made my decision for the S&W 686 Plus in 3". I hope i get my 686 soon. I like also your holster, is it a Galco? All the best for you!

    I have a S.&W. 4" .57 Mag that I bought in the 1990's. It seems it should be comparable to the 686 except for the barrel length. It has many of the same features: adj. rear sight, strong frame, stainless steel, and looks good.

      The very one in the video is a great all around gun. An Ar-15 is the American rifle (S&W makes some good ones), and a 1911 is the American pistol. As for shotguns, cannot go wrong with a mossberg. This may just be me, but I am not a fan of glocks

    I sat in the hollow of a beautiful mountain I've been trying to conquer for some time now. While resting on a log 4,200' up, I was watching this video, at two minutes in. Suddenly, I heard leaves rustling nearby. Across and down the hollow from me, were two coyotes coming right at me! They were following me up the mountain, and had food on their mind. I waited a minute for them to catch up, so when they were 50 yards away, I stood up and growled, and then told them to go home. One stopped and stared, the other continued walking up toward me, with no good intention.
    It was at this time that I reached for my Smith and Wesson 686 holstered on my hip, drew, aimed, and cocked the hammer. Not wanting to harm the creatures, I commanded them to go back again. I could have sworn that they knew what I was holding, because as soon as they saw it, they stopped in their tracks, turned tail, and fled.
    Coyotes are smart. Don't underestimate them, and never disrespect nature. Stay armed, and always pick up after yourself.
