  • Avon: The Rise and Fall of a Beauty Empire
Welcome to my latest video about Avon: The Rise and Fall of a Beauty Empire.
For over a century, Avon was one of the most recognizable brands in the beauty industry, known for its iconic "ding-dong" doorbell and a wide range of cosmetics, skincare, and fragrances. The company's sales model, which relied heavily on a network of independent sales representatives, made it one of the most successful direct-selling companies in history.
However, in recent years, Avon has struggled to keep up with changing consumer preferences and increased competition from both traditional brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers. In 2019, the company was sold to Brazilian beauty conglomerate Natura & Co., marking the end of an era for the iconic brand.
In this video, we take a closer look at the history of Avon, its rise to fame, and the challenges it faced in the 21st century. We explore the company's unique sales model, which allowed thousands of women to build successful businesses as Avon representatives, and we examine the factors that led to the company's decline.
We also discuss the impact of Avon's decline on the broader beauty industry, as well as the lessons that can be learned from the rise and fall of this once-great brand. Whether you're a beauty enthusiast, a business owner, or just curious about the history of one of the world's most iconic companies, this video is sure to be an informative and engaging exploration of the Avon story.

My mother sold Avon from the early 1970’s until she passed in 2018. I decided to take up her mantle and continue selling in her honor to this day. My sisters and I grew up getting Avon as Christmas and birthday gifts lol. She collected every single piece of the Cape Cod collection, in 6 place settings, which I am now the proud owner of. I don’t make tons of money, but enough to fulfill my Avon habit lol. Ding Dong. Avon calling!

I don't consider Avon a MLM company because they have products which you actually sell and when I was an Avon Lady, I never had any pressure to "sign people up" or make a sales quota. It was such a wonderful experience for me in the eighties when my Avon Lady left the catalog, I ordered, and then she brought the order over. I loved "Pearls and Lace"! The catalogs were so beautiful....

Sometimes I bought, oftentimes I didn't. Still, it was a pleasure to browse through the catalogue since online shopping & websites weren't common in my country then. I'm in my 40s now and I haven't bought from Avon in ages. Ahh nostalgia... 😊

Interesting Video. I worked in Avon manufacturing for many years. I am an oldie 👵🏼 . In 2003, 445 of us were made redundant after the manufacturing had been there since the 1950's.
It went to Poland, we were all devastated , it was a big part of our life and town. As a company we were well looked after.
I saw many many changes through the years and i totally agree the skin so soft aged well. The skin so soft cream was given to the British Army for soldiers because it contained deet ( bugs hate it )
You can imagine the hundreds of different bottles i saw daily and knew instantly what would be a hit and not.
It is a shame that a lot of people were and still are "snobby" about Avon and not admit to using it. Even after all these years Avon mascara is my favourite and the perfumes are not all bad some are devine ( until they reformulate it ) that is a whole different story!
In the 1970,s i wore Bird of Paradise it was exactly the same as Estee Lauder Youth Dew. This still smells the same too i still have a few bottles.
The original formula's are always the best and because of my "nose" i know instantly which ones have been changed . ( it has to be done because of the laws ) this is why you see original formulas of Avon on ebay selling for a lot of money. I saw an original formula of 90's Far Away selling for £74 on ebay. And as soon as a perfume is discontinued prices soar. Crazy i know but if you like the perfume i guess people will pay the price.
I still love Avon still use it and still wear the different perfumes. I am in no way advertising it but apart from all the older ones my favourite has to be Avon Far Away INFINITY. Wow the minute i hear of this being discontinued i will by lots ! I get more compliments when i wear this than with any other perfume i own ( including Chanel) it is lovely
Thank you for this lovely trip down memory lane. A very interesting video.
Take care and all good wishes 💐🇬🇧

I was an Avon Representative and then Sales Leader for 19 years here in Australia before it sadly closed in 2018. I loved being an Avon Lady I learnt so much from running a business and meeting so many people. In Australia Avon was using the direct sales model for a very long time and only in the later years did it bring in the Leadership program where you could and develop a team. I feel that Avon is different compared with other MLM's out there. The entry cost to Avon is very low you don't even need to buy a starter kit and levels of achievement for Leaders and rewards / trips and recognition is pretty easy compared with other companies. I tried a few others once Avon closed and it just wasn't the same. If it came back to Australia I would join in a heart beat!

    • @darkangel15221
      @darkangel15221 ปีที่แล้ว +6

But that was one of the reasons why Avon's sales suffered. They introduced the MLM component, which caused sales reps/leaders to focus more on growing their team while their own sales suffered. Also, the $10 start up fee attracted a lot of individuals who simply weren't suited to the "job." Mary Kay which costs upwards of $100 to start will get people who have a genuine interest in sales.

I enjoyed many of the scents in the 70s and even 80s but most of the newer scents are heavy and smell like either bug spray or old lady perfume and pretty much send me in an asthma attack. In my country (Philippines) Avon may have fallen a little but the women's underwear, perfume, cosmetics and skincare is very much a best seller here. Although considered still an MLM but here, it's very focused on selling that's why it has become a true direct selling company because people here sell Avon instead of actively recruiting. I myself have been a fan of a few of thier perfume and skincare. It's considered a pre-teen to teen makeup essential since mothers would buy thier daughters thier first makeup and would continue to thier young adulthood.
Nowadays you can still order from an Avon lady but it is accessible through online shopping. I don't know the situation in other countries but here's in mine.

My mum was an Avon lady in the 80s. I remember she had a full case of different eyeshadow samples and mini lipsticks. I experimented with them in my teens.
Her favourite perfumes were Imari, Pearls and Lace and I think one was called Pavi-Elle. I also remember Night Magic and Timeless
Fun fact about skin So Soft - I’m highly reactive to mosquito bites but also have very sensitive skin. We would try the Deep Woods spray but it irritated my skin and didn’t keep mosquitoes away. But Skin So Soft for whatever reason worked the best to keep them away from me. I think there were many who discovered this about it but they never marketed it that way because it would have had to go through more testing and certifications I believe.

Avon Fan Here! I sold Avon as a young adult and now I still buy it from a real, live Avon lady! I love their beautiful and inexpensive costume jewelry, Best! I get tons of compliments for years from my Avon jewelry sets and people are shocked when I tell them it's Avon. Their costume jewelry rarely turns color if you take care of it and store them well. I still wear a bracelet with matching earrings from 1978. I'm also a buyer of their skin care and some of their cosmetics. I like only 2 or 3 of their perfumes on me but I'm very picky about perfumes and colognes in general. I hope to see a resurgence in Avon in the future. I don't care for the collectables anymore but I use to buy all kinds of collectibles and neat gadgets from them, in the past.

Thank you for this lovely stroll down memory lane!
Over the years I have used Avon products and once (way back when...) I was an Avon Lady
in the late 1960's; as a young-married woman who wanted to earn a little extra money and
to get to know my new neighbors.
The one product that I have not seen (in any form) since Avon stopped selling it was a plastic
    (relatively-short) handled powder-puff with a resevior (screw-off top) for bath/body powder.
The powder-puff was removable and could be hand-washed. It came in several colors (that
changed over the years) If one stored the powder-puff in a ziplock plastic bag it was ready
for whatever scent you wanted in powder (without the perfume in the powder fading).
Some people had the powder-puff in colors that matched the color-theme of their favorite
    perfume's bottle.
I wish that someone, somewhere, would make that powder-puff product again!
(perhaps with the option of a longer handle for those of us who are older/less
flexible to powder our entire body). Also with packages of replacement powder-
puffs that fit the powder-er item. The puffs did wear out and were a unique five
    to six inch diameter.

I think the reason why Avon is forgotten now (as you mentioned aswell in the video) is because ordering cosmetics nowdays on the internet is so easy and accessible. It was different in the older days.
But I still buy some of their stuff to this day. Especially their bubble baths or their body lotions. I like their perfume varieties because they are super affordable. The cosmetics.. not so much. I prefer other og drugstore companies like MaxFactor, L'Oreal, Revlon.

You've got it exactly right. I have loved Avon since I was a child in the 1950s. The 1960s and 1970s Avon products maintained their high quality. Avon's Charisma was my signature scent from 1976 to 1980. In 1980, I brought a bottle of Charisma and the quality had declined so, that I never bought it again. Avon discontinues its best perfumes too soon and replaces them with new fragrances that don't smell nearly as good. Bath and Body Works used to offer great fragrances and products, but they are going the way of Avon with replacing their best fragrances with new less than mediocre aromas. I think Bath and Body Works is now dumping two or three of their better fragrances in a vat and mixing them together as a means of coming up with new products. It's not working most of their new products actually stink.

The mini magazine was wonderful. Their prices were honest and realistic. Women would revisit the magazine often, so they would have plenty of things to chat with the Avon Representative. Today’s prices in cosmetics is highway robbery, and Avon has proven that success is possible, without gauging consumers. The news about its main office closing in 2023 in New York, is such sad news to me. Imagine something as big as Avon, growing so big, it could take on the needs of big Apple in the 60’s. Phenomenal.

When women started getting more opportunities in the workforce and e-commerce became big, Avon didn’t shift its business model, and it was left in the dust. They made a bad decision with lowering their quality because e-commerce gives people access to higher-quality items at a more affordable price point.

Grandma used to save the tiny tubes of lipstick samples for me and my sister. Mom has a holiday perfume bottle from the 1980s, shaped like an angel; it's part of my holiday decorations, but is currently MIA.
    Grandma always wore Odyssey perfume

I just happened on the video and really learned a lot! Sweet Honesty was the first perfume I wore, back in high school in the 1970s. My mother was an Avon Lady for a while in the late 60s/mid 70s. Her favorite fragrance was Timeless. The most elegant of her customers wore a fragrance body cream called Occur, which came in a black jar - I remember that she always smelled so beautiful.

@Deborah, Occur was one of the loveliest perfumes that I’ve ever had. I used to love the matching talc too. I had loads of compliments.I was so sad when it was discontinued and I really miss the lovely variety of talcs. Great memories but I feel saddened that I will never get the chance to experience those lovely products again.Edit: I loved Timeless too.Very elegant and expensive smelling like Occur.

My mom loved the cameo creme perfume. In navy blue cup like with cameo in beige. And bought my dad a 1920 car perfume bottle. Ahh🎉

I am almost 70. I still use Wild Country (1967). I've tried many colognes, but I keep coming back to W.C. for my fall/winter fragrance. Gosh. It's been 40+ years and I am wearing it still!

Lovely walk down memory lane! I never cared for Avon perfumes, but the packaging was fabulous. They also came out with some good skincare in the 90s. They should reissue some of that lovely packaging.

I loved all of the different bottle shapes. I never used their products, but my great aunt helped me with my Avon bottle collection. I just loved their creativity.

Avon May have gone into decline in the USA since the sale of the North American arm to LG, but over here in the United Kingdom Avon has gone from strength to strength in recent years. They have really gone back to their roots of quality products like the Power Serum which has sold amazingly and many new fragrances launched.

Night Magic lives up to it’s name smell wise. I called it the “Guy Getting Perfume” in high school. When you want to get his attention, walk by him in the cafeteria with this on somewhat fast to create a breeze.

Timeless and Far Away were such a nice scents, that would stay on the skin the entire day. In the late 90's, I remember when the items could be purchased in a few stores here in Texas. Love the video 😍

My grandma used to get little pins that had solid perfume in them. I had a scented purple pen that was also a bracelet, and the kitty and fishbowl decanter of Sweet Honesty. I sold Avon in 2009/2010. I love Skin-So-Soft!
