The Rise and Potential Fall of Drunk Elephant

  • Tiffany Masterson began Drunk Elephant by closely copying a product she was selling from Malaysian brand Wonderbar, taking an African myth of elephants becoming drunk after eating the marula fruit and reframing toxic ingredients as a problem in skincare. Taking all of these things in a melting pot, Masterson had the recipe needed for success as she combined effective skincare with a backstory to bolster it's memorability. It's no secret that Masterson is not a chemist, nor is she a dermatologist, but she is clearly a phenomenal marketer and an incredible salesperson, evidence by their $845 million sale to Shisheido Japan. Though they've had their fair share of scandals, nothing so far has taken the brand into a true 'fall' era, though that is how the consensus seems when looking at online sources about the brand. Theres a discrepancy between public opinion and quantitative data like searches and sales that is fascinating about Drunk Elephant and it's certainly a brand Ill be keeping an eye on in the near future for any upcoming changes

    I just want to make one thing very clear that “clean beauty” is more of a marketing buzzword than it actually is a change in how your skincare and cosmetics are made. It just simply does not exist.

    • @underskinYT

      Non-toxic too is a marketing term. Generally cosmetics are heavily about marketing really, very little is truly new and a lot is based on perception. Theyre luxury goods after all 🤷

      Certainly, while the term "non-toxic" and "clean beauty" can sometimes be used as marketing buzzwords, there is merit in recognizing that certain beauty products do adhere to higher standards of cleanliness and safety than others.

      @@user-ci2wg1pp4pI suggest you look into cosmetic chemistry on TH-cam. Because all labs have standard procedures. Regulations play a big part in that. I checked skincare routine information provided by dermatologists online then came up with the types of products I wanted in my routine - retinol, antioxidant, chemical exfoliant, etc. Then I researched specific products for each and found products recommended by dermatologists, none of which cost more than $40. In fact most are under $30.
      There are pricier skincare products that are fine, and if the scents and textures are enjoyable there is no harm in many of them. But it’s not necessary to spend more.

    One thing I can clarify the animal testing part is:
    The 'loophole' for Mainland China market back in 2019 was through e-commerce, Drunk Elephant entered the mainland China market via Alibaba's TMall International where consumers can buy the product directly from outside of the "border" basically bonded warehouses. They don't have to follow the mandatory animal testing law since they did not sell products physically inside the region. Many other brands were doing the same, such as Fenty Beauty and Charlotte Tilbury (which had showrooms for consumers to try but they still had to order online). Until the gov updated the law in 2021, now brands like Aesop is rapidly expanding in the mainland.

    Drunk elephant's retinol (A Passioni cream) is still by far the most irritating retinoid I have ever used, and that includes prescription retinoids.
    What was also problematic was the fact that Drunk Elephant suggested that it could be mixed with their glycolic acid product, which is terrible advice and a recipe for a damaged skin barrier.
    Finally, they've had problems with their customer service, in that their approach seemed to be 'the customer is always wrong'. When customers made complaints about the products, Drunk Elephant reps told them they must be using the products wrong. It was as if the statt couldn't countenance their products not working for everyone.

      @user-mz7de3kc3d That's irrelevant to me though, as it ruined my skin for over a month after I used it. The ingredients list for the retinol is extremely long, which makes it more likely to irritate the skin.
      And Drunk Elephant advising customers that they could use it with their glycolic serum was just plain irresponsible - that's a recipe for destroying the skin barrier.

    Col video. I've been using DE since their launch. I still love their moisturizers and their BHA TLC treatment. TLC really cleans off all the dead skin and I'm left with beautifully fresh skin the next morning. I don't really use their other product because of the price point. I feel like i can get the same for less but I swear by those two OG products. What I like the most is that the moisturizers aren't perfumed. Elephants have been known to get "drunk" when they eat fermented fruit off the ground. This is not a myth, studies in the past ten years have discovered why elephants are affected this way.
    "In fact, elephants are likely exceptional lightweights because they - and many other mammals - lack a key enzyme that quickly metabolizes ethanol. The findings highlight the need to consider species on an individual basis"

      This isn't a takedown, it's an examination that tries hard to be objective about the companies featured.
      One thing left out about their hostile social media presence was how they would weaponize their fauthful customers to help attack critics as well as people innocently asking questions about the products. Some people started referring to the behavior as cult-like. It seems that aspect of the company hasn't changed much.

    • @awlmut
      @awlmut 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LPno.9 how is this an objective video when in the first 30 seconds they say, and I quote VERBATIM “… everything has gone to pot and the company has lost ALL of its initial buzz”
      That statement is objectively UNTRUE when, DE quite literally found new buzz with a new younger demographic and had massive stock outs this very year due to its continued popularity.
      It actually says so much about the state of our society that the average beauty consumer will watch these factually untrue videos designed only to put coins into the content farm’s pockets, and actually think they’re getting some juicy comeuppance scoop

    • @underskinYT
      @underskinYT  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think youre both right tbh, the title and the intro is meant to draw in people, thats its job, but the rest of the video is meant to be unbiased review of the company and how its reached the status it got to. Unfortunately using hyperbole like that at the beginning of the video works and is a necessary evil if I want anyone to click or watch to actually see the useful and informational content behind it 🤷 I too wish that wasnt the case, but most simply wouldnt have watched or commented without it and we all just have to pick our battles

    • @LPno.9
      @LPno.9 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@awlmut You may be quoting that line verbatim (no yelling caps needed because I think you can see the words here like I can), but you still removed it from its context and ignored whole other lines saying that it isn't actually falling off.
      The company experienced controversies that plummeted its credibility with a lot of people for a while. The video cites some well-known influencers who came out against the company because of their poor ethics. Other people disliked their unscientific marketing. They faced a major lawsuit. Had not this video explained that it's still a successful company, I would have thought they were on their way out. But note that the title says there could be a potential fall and not a fall full stop. Again, clear contextual information that the video is not asserting that the company is done. And of course it goes on to very clearly say that a fall may not actually come because the company has rebounded from their earlier problems and is doing well in Asia's huge and competitive skincare market.
      The available information about the company is what it is, and this channel is reporting on what has happened. No one is telling you or anyone else that the products are bad and shouldn't be used. I don't know if the phenomenon of very young people causing the brand to trend again was purposely left out (if I didn’t miss it), but I would understand if it was just to avoid people in that demographic getting angry and lashing out at the video without understanding that the company isn't being harmed.

I ditched everything for a while, cleansing only with spring water then slowly implemented in products made with whole plant extracts, and saturated fats (shea butter, tallow, squalane), no essential oils or fragrance. Finding a skincare company that showed the process of making the product, including the purpose of each ingredient, and why they dont use surfactants/etc really helped me understand what i was putting on my skin and what i dont want to put on it. I worked in dermatology and tried all the L’Oréal lines (La Roche Posay/Vichy/Cera Ve), plus skincare I purchased and returned like Naturium, Mad Hippie, Korean skincare lines, etc. (I’m not going to list every product ever but hopefully you get the point). None of their products worked for me the way the DE products do. I use other brands products (pimple patches, benzoyl peroxide, face wash, and cosrx) so I’m not strictly DE, but I can’t knock a product that I’ve continuously gone back to.

Anyone who actually understands cosmetic chemistry and isn't ethically challenged will tell you to stop worrying about "chemicals" in your beauty products, because literally everything that exists in physical form is made of chemicals, and being unable to pronounce something is a the fault of the reader, not the ingredient. As a dyslexic, I understand reading is hard, but everything has a chemical name along with its common name, and we just have to accept that.

    I think it will take a while for drunk elephant to truly fall, because their target audience is ignorant consumers with money to burn, and that makes it so easy for them to avoid coming under scrutiny from enough of their consumer base to really impact their sales. I don’t think it’s very fair to call their customers ignorant, they just have a different set of values and drunk elephant has found a way to market towards those values. Evidently, they have been marketing heavily towards tweens and teens on tik tok. Two of the skincare subreddits I follow were flooded with parents over the past couple months asking if DE products were okay for their 9 (?!?), 10, 11-14 year olds. That the price point alone wasn't enough of a signal to these parents that they aren't blew my mind. (And no, the kids weren't just asking for gentle cleansers and moisturizers lol. exfoliants, the vitamin c, and/or retinols were always included.)

    I don't really think that DE is falling, or at least you wouldn't see it as such if you're around the whole "clean girl aesthetic" feed. I feel like both influencers and people on social media who promote this "aesthetic", as well as faceless aesthetic pictures on Pinterest, Instagram or so, heavily feature DE products. I don't know why, as I don't find their packaging minimalistic enough to correspond to this "aesthetic", nor I am interested in their brand per se, but seeing DE so heavily featured makes me doubt they'll be falling into obscurity too soon...

    I don't know about the idea of the idea of body hair or Under arm smell being made up as a thing though, I seem to remember reading plenty of historical documents of women completely shaving down using shells, and using all sorts of special oils and stuff, in order to not smell and do not have any hair before certain marriage rituals... and there's a reason perfume has such a long history
    I'm pretty sure the difference of the more modern era, is that people actually realize that they could not only mask the smell with perfume, but they are finally coming to terms with the idea of science being able to engineer a way to deodorize the smell completely.
    Sing with female shaving, once women had access to better Fabrics like silks, I remember reading a woman saying that she shaved because she liked how the new fabric Felts on her legs and how scandalous she felt saying that

      So maybe your professor hadn't research that topic completely before they talked about underarms smell and leg hair.
      It to become a lot more common in the 20th century because that was the rise of the middle class from the working class they were before, and even some people of the working class gained access to a lot of consumer goods, and of course they would want to be like the rich people

      I dont know 100% about the origin of perfume, but I assume that came as a cosmetic for people to show off wealth and be seen as attractive (which would be an invented problem) tho I could be wrong, I dont think it had the primary use of cleansing.
      But in regards to shaving, youre describing cosmetic uses of it. We know the earliest razors were donkeys before our first modern razors and we assume women used them, not for hygiene but for cosmetic purposes. Perhaps I shouldve said repopularisation of razors because its effectively the same thing modern marketers did. Convince women specifically that their body hair was a problem to make sales off of their cosmetic insecurities. I think it stuck because people enjoyed the feeling of it, and then it became something of sexual desire also 🤍
