  • Tech Consultant Zach Peterson recently created some calculators related to temperature prediction in PCB traces carrying a certain amount of current. Today, Zach discusses two related thermal standards, as well as how you can use these calculators for your own projects.

    For switching supplies, any temperature rise in the traces will be dwarfed by the Schottky diode's resistance; if you size the diode to sufficiently dissipate the heat, you should be fine.
    If you have the board space, a wider trace for power is better from both thermal and impedance perspectives. (Power planes are even better, assuming the cross section is greater than anything you could achieve with external traces plus solder accumulation on exposed copper.) If you need to add a bit of extra series impedance for filtering (another contentious subject), it's better to throw in a resistor than to reduce trace width.
