For those who want to visit Xinjiang, I suggest you to fly to Urumuqi, rent a car in Urumuqi, then drive yourself around this province. They have very fast and convenient highways, you can access everywhere in a car, with mostly a top speed of 120Km/h. The only problem for me is their highways sometime are too straight for a long distance, I almost fell asleep in some night drives.

Welcome to Xinjiang! I moved to Xinjiang this year. All bias gone after I traveled around Urumqi at the first 2wks, love it. Its safe and full of kind, helpful, lovely people, my Uyghur and muslim colleagues are super cool too, love their music. Xinjiang has marvelous landscapes and amazing food, nice climate too. If you feel safe traveling in China, imma telling you man, here is extra safe. You can visit Urumqi Museum to learn about this part of China. Anyway, wish you have fun and all the best.

Good and entertaining. I went to Urumqi septembaer last year and went again two months ago and also went to Kashgar and Taskurgan. It was beautiful and I loved going there. If I could i would like to go there again. What i disliked is the time to get there. It took me almost 24 hours just to get to Urumqi. BTW i am from Jakarta. Indonesia.
