  • Listen & compare Sanken's COS-11D to Sennheiser's ME-2 - before & after processing.
A big thanks to Team 108 ( Team108) from Singapore who loaned us the gear post-processing all the mygeorgetown films.
Listen to Dan Jahn here: www.soundcloud.com/dajahn
"Hi, I'm Ryan with the OXLAEY project. I'm in Penang, Malaysia, right now shooting a series of short films about the city of George Town. My friend Dan, a DJ and sound engineer from Germany, came over to help out with the postproduction. While Dan was here, we thought we'd test out two high-end lavaliere microphones - the Sanken COS-11D and the Sennheiser ME-2. We're gonna do a microphone shoot out first and play the raw sound. Then we're gonna use the mobile studio set up to master the audio and compare the processed sound to the unprocessed."
"I’m Ryan with the OXLAEY project. Today, I’m in Penang, Malaysia and together with my friend Dan - we’re gonna test out two lav mics. We’re gonna do a lavaliere microphone shoot out between the Sanken C O S eleven and the Sennheiser M E 2.
Wide & close of JRA in front of Arts Ed
    Dan walking down the street
    Dan walking up the stairs
Dan walking into the Arts Ed
Shots of the microphones & gear
RYAN: We’ll start by playing the raw recordings. After that Dan’s gonna master each track and then, finally, we’ll compare the original raw recordings with the mastered tracks.
Shots of setting up the microphone on JRA.
Shot of JRA pointing out the Sanken and the Sennheiser
RYAN: Here are the raw recordings.
DAN: So I’ve loaded up the audio in Reaper and I’ll make a few adjustments. blah blah
RYAN: So before listening to Dan’s mastered versions, just note that the tracks have been mastered independently.
RYAN: Now you’ll hear all four tracks raw and mastered in comparison with each other.
    SHOW 4 squares and
DAN: SAY HERE WHAT YOUR OPINION IS!
RYAN: Although I use both microphones, I personally prefer the sound created through the Sanken COS-11. For my ears, it has a crisper sound without sounding too thin. The Sennheiser is fine but compared to the Sanken it just doesn’t have the clarity in the mid-range. In addition, the Sanken is more sensitive than the Sennheiser, so I get a stronger signal at a lower recording level which results in a sound with less noise.
RYAN: You can follow this link to watch a video on Dan’s mobile studio set up or click on this link to watch an OXLAEY film shot in Malaysia and hear both microphones in action.
Find out more about Dan’s work and band here:
    FOR WRITTEN NOTES:
"Both microphones are plugged into a Sennheiser G2 wireless system and are record directly onto a TASCAM DR-40. The Sennheiser transmitter is set at XXX and the receiver set at XXX. The G2 wireless system is plugged into the TASCAM's channel 3 and we're recording in 4-channel mode. The TASCAM’s external input is set to "mic" and the external input (channel 3) level is recording at at -34 db."

The cos-11 is a hotter mic, seems to have more sibilants? I’m thinking i5 would be a good mic under a shirt, wind shield or under a hat. I’ve been going back and forth between mics. I’m thinking Sanken cos-11 now…

hello Ryan, could you please advice me which recorder i can use with Sennheiser ME 2 lav? It's urgent, as i have brand new Zoom H1 and ME2, and mic is not working with this recorder :(. When the headphones are plugged in, during testing, i only could hear the hiss but nothing else. Would it be because one of the devices is faulty, or the reason for the lav not working is because it's underpowered, as H1 plugin power provides 2.4V, whereas ME3 supporting power is 7.2V?? Thank you so much for your help.

+Solveiga Serova The ME 2 runs on phantom power. That means it doesn't have a battery or power source inside the microphone or mic cable to "feed" it the power needed to pick up sound correctly. The ME 2 has to draw its power from the recorder in order to function correctly. The ME 2 needs 7.5 volts and the Zoom only provides 2.5 volts. So you'll have to find a recorder that can "feed" your ME 2 the power it needs OR (if you are in a hurry) go buy a cheap lav microphone which "feeds" itself with its own power. Such microphones usually have a little battery in the cable somewhere. If you record your audio in a quiet setting, you can get quite nice audio even from a cheap microphone by adding a little post production. Hope this helps!

Just a side note: if you use a Zoom H4n and any other recorder that can provide +48V phantom power down a XLR cable, Sennheiser makes a XLR adapter for their lavs (MZA900P). Its an easy way to use ME-2 or MKE-2 on a normal XLR line. Cost is around $159 US.

I don't get it. I'm listening to the unprocessed and processed Sanken clip over and over and over and it sounds better than the processed version. The processed version sounds tinny and thin. (I'm not a pro but it doesn't make sense that the processed version would sound worse than the unprocessed unless the mixing wasn't great)... what am I missing?

Hey James: Actually I agree with you. That's why I've since stopped processing the audio from the Sanken. It's excellent right out of the wire and speeds up workflow.

For what it's worth, I've since stopped post-processing the Sanken. For me it sounds great right out of the mic.

Nice test. Both very good mics. But I have to say people look for and value different things. I'm a professional musician--and maybe that influences what I want, and the ME-2 seems to have more warmth and depth of tone--without being muddy. Is there such a thing as being too clear too compact?!?
Basically, I prefer the ME-2--and I sure don't think there's $200.00 difference between the two. Just my 2¢

The difference is build quality. And resistance to interference

The senn is missing a bunch of information that will never be recovered.

Very disappointing in this example at least. It sounded crunched like an overdone MP3 processing. On the software manipulation, this editor seems to like hearing some nasal sounds. They both sounded better just left alone. Now I'll go back to my $50 to $70 lavalier world.

@@LiveMusicOntario Cos 11D is definitely on my list now. I like sanken sound. a lot of stuff sounds bloated or muffled when compared.

This is nonsense! You are not comparing like with like. The Sennheiser ME2 is a budget microphone for Semi-pro use whilst the Sanken COS 11-D is a Professional Broadcast microphone and costs an extra $200 dollars than the ME2. If you want to compare a Sennheiser Microphone with the Sanken, try the Sennheiser MKE2 which is similar is cost to the Sanken!

For me it’s helpful, I am deciding between these two mics right now. Not nonsense at all.

Love that people sit behind a keyboard and berate a video because it's not what they're looking for; telling someone what they should and should not do with their own video is nonsense. This video is helpful for me. Deciding if I should buy a Sanken COS 11-D to go with a Sennheiser receiver/transmitter system vs using the stock mic that comes with it.

I agree with you Martin. I find it ridiculous too. I guess he was excited to get an upgrade from his ME2, and wanted to do a video. It's a shame, because the comparison with an MKE-2 would have been interesting, since like the COS 11-D, the MKE-2 is designed for clarity of speech (as well as music).

No, the Sennheiser MKE-2 is the best in its category. The ME-2 is the bargain alternative.
