Just bought JPX 919 Tour. Never thought I was decent enough to hit players irons, but went to a demo day and fell in love with FEEL... It was like magic. Instant control. It's like I've been looking through a dirty window all this time, and now I can see everything clearly for the first time. Thanks for the video, keep 'em coming.
Qerim Shahini that’s great. I’m getting fitted for irons Friday and I’m looking at mizunos too. I like the look of the jpx forged but I’m 12 handicap and I think I’m more cut for the hot metal. Was there a big difference?
@@jeremypollard3565 I was about 12 as well, 10 at the moment. I didn't bother with anything other than the tour once I hit them, because I love the top line and they truly feel wonderful to hit. So, if I may offer any advice, don't discount the tour model just because you think you need to be single figures, you'll be surprised!
Exactly James. Well done. Got a demo set of AP3s. Looks feel height distance and half price with no wear. Shopping is the second best part of the experience!
Great advice. I just found your page the other day and have been watching your videos for the past couple days. You definitely give my favorite reviews and advice out there. I think I found my new go to source.
Great vid, I love your approach by not labeling certain styles of irons with handicap numbers, its so refreshing and genuinely gives me more confidence to look at the irons I want and not what my handicap dictates i should play!
James Robinson Golf So got fitted today for Mizuno MP-18s. As a 13 handicap I was expecting to be pushed away from them but the Mizuno fitter encouraged me to go for the blades as I hit them really well! Shaft is absolutely key. Can not wait to play with them 🔥
#1 is FEEL. As the great Ben Hogan said " Irons are your feel and scoring clubs". This obsession with distance is not really for irons. FEEL is most important and then lessons and PRACTICE !!!. You actually get better using a Titleist muscleback, and with PRACTICE.
Interesting and inspiring video, James, but I have the feeling that you pose more questions than I can answer ;-) I'm a weekend golfer, handicap 35.6, and still play with a beginners Dunlop set with a 5 wood, 60 and 52 wedge added. Since I try to play weekly, and using tips & tricks of mainly Rick Schiels (e.g. fix your slice), me and my golf, recently you and my golf buddy, my game is finally improving. Time for new irons ? Probably, but I really have no clue where to start looking without falling into a commercial trap (expensive clubs that are not helping my game). Your questions seem the right ones, but they are too many ;-)
James, I'm actually in the process of considering changing my irons. I won't forget every single tip from this video. You're San ing me time and money and I like that !!
Hi Simon, Yes they are the irons with the dots that line up with the groves. I have a lovely set of Macgregor gold crowns as well with the same indents and the matching blonde woods with the red faces. They are both lovely sets to play with.
Lesson lesson lesson... made the effort, it took me about a year and I had to go thru about 4 instructors but finally found my obi one kenobi.. Same set of clubs but now im shooting very low 80’s and dipped into the high 70’s a couple of times..
Refreshing to hear the truth James. I think your comments on fitting and aesthetics are spot on. You need to fit your swing AND your eye. “Players” irons haven’t changed appreciably in performance over the past few years and it’s interesting to note that several high profile tour pros are now reluctant to automatically update to the latest model. How much is the cost of equipment and the apparent need to regularly update it contributing to the worldwide decline in golfer numbers?
Hi, i bought a new set of irons (Pig Gmax), at the beginning of the year. I had just taken the game up again, after a 20 year absence. The main reason was i had an old set of Wilson (25yo Sam Sneads) and i am now 57, not 30 ish. I had a Ping fitting, and they certainly help my aged body get distance, height and accuracy. But they were very expensive, and maybe if i had thought a bit more and had some good advice i would of bought something less game improver, so they would of lasted me longer. But over all, im well pleased with them.
I like to recommend when trying out irons. Try them 2 or 3 times when testing before you purchase. Some days you go and ball striking is above average then you buy a blade and find out you struggle with consistency. Try clubs a few times before buying to see how they perform for you on average.
My experience over many years reinforce a few key points you make. First spending time and effort on improving technique and fitness probably pays more dividend than changing irons. Second, feel and looks to you are critical- I have had sets fitted for me but ended up selling them several times because I was not sure I liked the looks and feel including one specific brand that everyone including fitters keep pushing on me but I ended up now banning from any on my list. Third, I have had several fittings including work with professionals and found that there are few that are really good, balanced and objective and recommend the right specs - everyone seems to push a specific shaft, or a specific head or combination. After much research and identifying a few of the better more objective sites I found that my own research was more effective that many of the fitters so I am somewhat sceptical of their effectiveness unless one can find the right one though I think fitting is critical including as you reference appropriate mix across the set, including to the wedges. Same experience with putters - after some professional putting assessment in the end it was changing my grip technique that made all the difference rather than just the putter brand and type. Fourth if you are investing in your technique, fitness and specific golf exercises and are improving then consider clubs that might suit your next niche level- the next small jump so oh can grow into them and also force them to make you focus on your technique rather than reinforce poor technique which is the problem of some of the too easy to hit (and rather ugly or bulky looking- at least to me) irons.
There's almost too many choices now. I'm attracted to more "traditional" looking irons, but then I feel like I might be leaving a lot of performance on the shelf. And like you said, there's the gaps at the top of the bag that you can use irons, hybrids, or fairway woods to fill. The wind in Texas makes every club choice more difficult and right now I have no idea what I'm going to wind up buying. My current irons that I have played since 2005 are no longer be conforming so I have no choice. Just keep the reviews coming. I need the suggestions.
Paul Are they the ones with the circle indents on the face that line up with the grooves?? If they're the ones i'm thinking of, I always wanted a set of them!
Simon Hobden Hi Simon. Yes they are. I have a full set of Macgregor gold crowns as well complete with the blonde woods. They are just lovely clubs to play with.
Well done James. You bring up a very interesting point in tip 9. Would love to see a comparison video of a Specialty wedge vs a Set matching wedge. Keep up the good work sir. Mich
Tip # 1 Never ever ever buy new Irons, buy 2nd hand , let someone else waste money on new irons. It is very easy to pick up a perfectly good set of irons for 1/2 the price of new.
Good video - but being a 10%'er i.e. left handed, it's hard to even find all the types to try. So Cobra F8 one length are on order along with a one length Hybrid 3. 7 iron is my most comfortable and accurate in my current Callaway X-Hot set. I have worked putting and driving to "fair" but the irons are still inconsistent except for the 7. The Cobras will not cost me too dearly to test. And I think they look good.
I've had Rocketbladez for 5 years, I'm thinking of getting PSI irons, but of course they are 2 years old and probably 2nd hand. I need a little more feel I think with some forgivness. Plus I was fitted standard, but bent up 3, so I'd be keen to get them altered. 7 iron goes 150 carry, I'm 60, off 11 so no thoroughbred, lol. Thanks for the tips James.
Currently I've been improving but using a set of Ben Hogan apex edge irons and pw sw. Callaway 52 and 58 and cobra sz xtreme driver with 454 comp 3w and BH 5w. Looking at getting a set of forged cobra irons. Shooting in the 80s now started at 100. I think I'm a 15 handicap
I'm a high handicap player, but I seem to play worse with game improver irons. I was fitted for callaway rogue irons, but only bought a 6 and a PW because I honestly just didn't like them. Been playing with them and I want to find something thinner at address. I'm looking at the p790 now
Good Video Thanks, My question is this: How do I find the right fitter for me? I suspect as in all jobs, there are those who are far better at fitting than some others. Why get fitted with someone who really does not have the skills to see what I really need???? Where do I find the right fitter and how do I know he is the right fitter??? A video on this topic would be good to have. Thanks Again. MN
Thank you. I am going to regrip my irons. I was going to replace my Taylormade burner driver. I bought a Ping G30. That was a mistake. I changed my swing and changed the height of the tee. Now I am killing my driver. That driver also. Ow has new grips.
James Robinson Golf I have thought about changing but alot of clubs these days look massive. I forgot to say mine are the tour combos. Plus money for me is an issue. Up until last week every club in my bag was the same as it was ten years ago. But I do fancy the taylormade p730s but need to save up for them
I was wondering if you could tell me why the only Woods I can hit consistently are the old Warbird woods. I love them because they feel good. I have tried new modern woods of all kinds and can’t hit those great big heads with any consistency or as far.
Great vid James. Question tho. I've been using the ping s55 irons for almost 3 years now, and they are fantastic. The only thing is tht i have a hard time when it comes to distance because i hit it really high and into the wind it gets unnecessarily complicated. So I've been thinking to go for the i210/iblade and i500 in a combo set to gain distance in short irons and forgiveness in the long irons. Do you think that is sensible?
I've only started playing again and currently testing out new irons. I can hit my 50+ year old irons but struggle with the newer clubs. Is this common?
Great video, thanks. I use second-hand TM speedblades that my coach had when I first started golf about 2 years ago. They seem fine - he didn't like them because of the offset. Anyway, my thing is now that I have improved, I'm just plain curious - I've only ever owned and played with these irons so I'm very keen to get another set, even though I probably don't *need* to (there's nothing wrong with the irons at all, I hit them quite well, don't mind how they look etc). I guess I've just got an itchy wallet!
I still find this to be very confusing. I'm very new, iv'e only been on practice court 3 times. I seem to do very well with my old 20+ year old clubs and people have been inviting me to play on course with them. What i wonder the most is, is it really worth getting beginner clubs over learning a more advanced set of clubs right away(Some middle ground maybe)? Wouldn't this be the progress you take anyway? I won't be chasing handicap or anything like that, but id want a set of clubs that i can grow with rather than limiting my potential skill level. I understand that it might be more fun if you play consistent but for me learning a skill is the fun part, immediate result is not something i value high. I guess you answer my question to some extent on part 8, but i don't even know if my clubs are "players clubs" or not haha. Grips are not good at all but i thought that maybe it just better to buy new clubs rather than re-gripping so old set.
currently using the original AP2 irons (from about 2009 i think) which were bought second hand. I've had a lot of success with them over the years, however i now know the lie angles are too upright for me, something i never considered at the time. My question is: It it worth getting rid of a slightly older set for a new fitted set, and adjust the lie angle; or simply get fitted for a new set? I do appreciate any advice! Thanks!
I would try tweaking yours, see if that works and saves you money. And if that doesn’t then book a no expectation of purchase fitting. Just pay for someone’s time who can help you. Thanks for watching
I bought a cobra s3.pro.combo set 3-6cb and 7-pw mb Didnt tried it yet...im waiting until my taylormade tour preferred MC 2014 to wear out first......lol
@jamesrobisongolf why no mention of the AP3s? Why does everyone not include those in the players distance. I just purchased a set and it's making me reconsider my purchase
I've just bought a second hand set of mizuno irons to improve my ball striking on the range, does anything feel as good as hitting a mizuno iron out the middle?
I have out grown my current improver irons, so looking for new ones, problem is so many to choose from! I am going to get fitted but wary of the process, seems to me that fitters want to sell clubs, not many places do it or charge ridiculous money. I have had coaching from about 6 coaches, all negative experience, they never have a lesson plan, they try to make you the perfect model rather than developing strengths, half an hour lessons (which are not long enough) for £35!! poor value for money. I love golf but unfortunately see nothing positive in the industry at the moment.
Don't forget also tip #11 - if you just want them... you're allowed to play whatever clubs you want even if a snobby pro or annoyed salesman says you shouldn't. Tell them to take a long walk off a short pier and go play the game how you want to play.
I just picked up some irons from a garage sale... Kinda regretting the buy. they were like brand new and one of the top name brands, though it was a great deal, i could have used that money towards something i liked using.... As i discovered later i don't like how they perform. Think from now on ill just keep my eye out for only what i want only what i need!
Currently playing blades, I'm a 9 handicapper but strike the ball well, thinking of investing in a set of p760's to keep the small head size that I like but hopefully add some forgiveness to those slightly off centre hits, particularly with the long irons. Would you say the p760's would offer me what I'm looking for?
Where around Leeds, Huddersfield, Wakefield or Sheffield can you go to get custom fit? You talk about different head/shaft options but my experience is that these places don't exist. You go to the high street stores...... you know the one, they don't have 100's of different shafts. Most golf clubs only sell a certain amount of brands and same again don't have lots of shaft options. Where would you go for custom fitting? Many thanks in advance.
I played the same set of Titleist blades for 25 years. Moved into AP2s a few years ago. Loved both, but I get a little shorter each year. Hey, it happens. Looking into something to get a few yards back and keep the accuracy and spin. Any suggestions?
So when buying clubs put your EGO aside! At the end of day, your score and the enjoyment/memories you have with your clubs that want matters! You don't need blades, you're not a pro!
Great Vid James (just loving your content), I would LOVE a new set of Irons but nothing can beat my current Wilsons (not even the new hollow heads) and it`s KILLING ME!!!!! I HATE the look of the Wilsons (proper 10 Pinters), but these sexy new Irons just can`t compete with my old Dogs! I may buy a set of i500`s just to look at during the winter!
i play older clubs....After two holes of me hitting them well....everyone wants to inspect them....and are dumbfounded by being outperformed by older models. lol
Interest video, in the market for new irons and genuinely don't know where to to start. Dont have a big budget so fitting seems a little out of my range sadly :(
I finally moved up in the golf technology world. Traded in all my older clubs for the newer stuff. Skeptical at first, until I invested time n practice with them. The new technology does help and inspire confidence. I won’t upgrade every time the new stuff comes out, but I won’t use the old stuff I had. 👍🏽🏌🏽♂️

Great video James. Ha ha you know my love of older blades. Just purchased a lovely set of Macgregor Ben Crenshaw Texan blades they are stunners.👍
Nice Paul!!! 😍😍😍😍

Just got hold of a set of Mizuno MP59s
It’s all about hitting the distance I want with irons, control and feel for me everyday
Oh and another top video!
I've got 3 sets I picked up all different range of pricing. I like them all and its hard to decide if I want to keep them or not.
Love older titleist dci gold irons. Have tried alot of irons cant seem to find anything i like better.
Great top 10 video and I agree 100% always get fitted the difference is amazing
Cheers TT!
James Robinson Golf I like the TT 👍😃
Great video like my driver my irons are old. Taylormade rac 2005. Had them for ten years. Strike them lovely but they are starting to look shabby
Cheers Ewan! Any thoughts of change? Or happy with your RAC?

Almost 20 yr old Cleveland TA6 irons...might be time for an upgrade!
Well done!!

In the video you showed a lot of ping irons. Can you do a comparison video on power loft to standard loft with the I210?
I’ve got a lot of exciting Ping content coming up ⛳️👍🏼🎥
James Robinson Golf can you go into more detail?
James Richardson I’ve been invited to Pings national fitting centre to film a full fit. And following the fit way more to come 🔥🎥👍🏼⛳️
James Robinson Golf can’t wait to see the video. Keep up the good work !!
2021 still using Tommy Armour 845’s
Currently playing blades, I'm a 9 handicapper but strike the ball well, thinking of investing in a set of p760's to keep the small head size that I like but hopefully add some forgiveness to those slightly off centre hits, particularly with the long irons. Would you say the p760's would offer me what I'm looking for?
Love the videos by the way 👍
Where around Leeds, Huddersfield, Wakefield or Sheffield can you go to get custom fit? You talk about different head/shaft options but my experience is that these places don't exist. You go to the high street stores...... you know the one, they don't have 100's of different shafts. Most golf clubs only sell a certain amount of brands and same again don't have lots of shaft options. Where would you go for custom fitting? Many thanks in advance.
Most clubs now offer a decent fitting mate
I think tip 8, should have been tip 1, but otherwise great video!
Thanks for watching mate! Cheers
I played the same set of Titleist blades for 25 years. Moved into AP2s a few years ago. Loved both, but I get a little shorter each year. Hey, it happens. Looking into something to get a few yards back and keep the accuracy and spin. Any suggestions?
Srixon 1990 model blades
What course is this?
So when buying clubs put your EGO aside! At the end of day, your score and the enjoyment/memories you have with your clubs that want matters! You don't need blades, you're not a pro!
Get Fitted! :) Cheers!
I may buy a set of i500`s just to look at during the winter!
what happend to that golf club its no grass
It was 2 summers ago mate. Major heatwave
i play older clubs....After two holes of me hitting them well....everyone wants to inspect them....and are dumbfounded by being outperformed by older models. lol
Hahahaha people think they can by a game ! They can’t!
O. G. Me too and my irons are lower end from golf plus. Name not important but I play them better than new stuff. Don’t understand but oh well
Man that course could use a drink
It's not you, it's the clubs!
Thanks for the video, great as always!
I have a tip for you.... Invest in a whiteboard, go paperless for your numbering. 😂😂
😂😂😂😂 you’ll love my wedge one!
Squirrel!
Interest video, in the market for new irons and genuinely don't know where to to start. Dont have a big budget so fitting seems a little out of my range sadly :(
American golf does a free custom fit
I finally moved up in the golf technology world. Traded in all my older clubs for the newer stuff.
Skeptical at first, until I invested time n practice with them.
The new technology does help and inspire confidence.
I won’t upgrade every time the new stuff comes out, but I won’t use the old stuff I had. 👍🏽🏌🏽♂️
