The thing is its hard to find a fitter like you and Dan, If you go into your local AG branch they often just ask handicap and use the manufacturers guff to sell you a product. These type of videos are enlightening and give people the confidence to know if someone is forcing a sell or actually trying to sell them something to improve there game.

Anyone thinking of getting fitted for clubs should watch this. I've always been wary of going for a fitting because I have heard lads complaining that it didn't help them! But having listened to your explanation I'm thinking they may have been looking for something that fitting couldn't give them. Maybe what they needed was a lesson and a better understanding of how they strike the ball. This video has given me good insight and I'll give fitting serious consideration now. Very enjoyable channel.

Just bought a new set of irons
Mizuno JPX921 Tour because my handicap has come down since my last set. Don’t really need extra distance. Loved the look and feel of the tour model. Extra playability allowing me to shape my shits into the greens.
JPX 921 forged in the 6, 5 & 4I for extra long iron performance.
    Love the thinner top line.
    Love the lack of oddest.
    Love the brushed/ satin finished
Waiting to come out of Covid19 lockdown play a round with them.
My old set were JPX850 and have served me well.

Moved to blades (MB714) a couple of years ago from muscle cavity and have found both accuracy and distance control has improved. When swinging well I find approaches are generally closer to target. Also know exactly where I’ve hit it on the club face.

Mate that’s the best advice I’ve ever heard and to all after just being fitted for a set of iron is to follow marks advice 💯 %
A truely good fitted will find you the right fit for you as I found for me in my Callaway apex irons and I never had them as a brand or iron id ever consider but I never looked at the back of the iron I was hitting so I just let the feel and numbers do the talking. Now just to decide what grips to get! 🤔

Fitter here: 15:14 this is very very very good advice.
My other main tip is to focus on what performance will lower your scores, and not what will help your ego. Here is a few key examples.
If you already hit your 7 iron 185 in the air you don't need to hit it 200, that will just give you bigger gaps in your short irons, and it will not make you play 18 holes in less shots. Distance consistency and control is more important then the furthest shot going as far as possible.
You are way better off being able to hit a 7 iron consistently 175, then sometimes 215, and sometimes 230, even if 230 looks cooler at the range.
The other big thing is misshit management, which misshit will punish you less on the course. If you have a 2 way miss that will cost you strokes, you are better off having a 1 way miss
This is especially true for drivers, you have no idea how many people have hit their furthest drive of the day and thought wow this setup must me great, when it only went far because they hit a super low spin hook that launched high and went 75 yards offline.
The example with this for irons is the same, on a sim hitting a sweeping hook with 4300 spin 200 yards with your 7 iron is a great shot, on the course it is not going to stop on the green, and might just be lost left.
When being fit don't try and hit it as far as possible, try and hit the ball like you would on the course.
Edit : 19:00 this is also very very very good advice, please listen to what mark says here, it makes my life, and job easier, and will make it easier for me or your fitter to find the best clubs for you.

Thanks Mark. Great video as usual. I would also advise people not to get intoxicated by hitting a game improvement iron a mile. I swapped out my CB’s for the TAylormade M1’s because I could carry the 6 iron 200 vs 175 with the CB’s. Worst mistake ever. I just swapped back to regular lofts and bought the Apex Pro’s which are stunning. Cheers 🍻

I tried several sets and narrowed my search to the Srixon 785 and the Mizuno 919 Tour. Ended up going with the Srixon as the worst of my shots were a little bit better while the flushed shots behaved the same. I got a little higher spin with the Mizunos but I'm a high spin player anyway (~6800 7i with the Srixons, ~7050 Mizuno). Love them so far...

I agree with what u said. I had a fitting for the first time last year and didn't know what to expect. They give around an hour for a fitting on irons and especially being my first time it wasn't long enough wish I would of paid for an extra hour. Don't get me wrong I love my clubs but I wonder if I had more time if I would have mix up my set weather adding hybrids, hybrids or work on gapping. But either way it was an awesome experience getting fitted

I bought into Mark’s ideas about fitting when he got his daughter a set of Titleist AP2 irons, with the right shaft. She looks like a good little player who benefits from Mark’s logic..ie. more loft is good.

So many great ideas that seem difficult to apply, at least here in the States. Most places I have seen, sell an iron fitting, a wedge fitting, hybrids and fairways are there own category, and they don’t really want to intermix the categories without changing an exorbitant amount of money. I have no problem spending money for a fit, but sometimes they definitely act like making money is more important than what is right for the customer.

    • @paddymckibbin3957
      @paddymckibbin3957 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Jamie Knowles go to a fitting with your own 7 iron to compare against. Try a few different clubs and various shaft options and see if there’s one set that helps you hit the ball straighter, longer, and you could afford, then you can consider if you should change. One last thing in most cases some lessons with a good coach would improve your game far more than any new clubs will. Good luck 👍

Thanks for the reply Mark, I watched this video tonight which is a Month after I got, what I call a partial fitting from Puetz Golf in Seattle ,USA while I was visiting family. I live on the fantastic Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Future home of Prince Harry, I think. I found that the JPX 919 Hot Metal Pro was my preferred iron with 110 pro taper shafts, and triple wrap standard grips. Waiting impatiently for them to arrive. I am a 9-11 handycap based on weekly physical abuse. ( I scuba dive, Teach Chinese Kenpo Karate, Dirt Bike, Downhill Ski, and Run Kick boxing classes) . This is mostly all weekly, skiing is a winter add, Oh and yes I golf as much as I can, 2 rounds this last weekend.in between snow falls.LOL.
Sorry, to get to the point, I wish I watched this video first, as I'm sure I may not be standard loft and standard lie. I have JPX 850 irons now with 130 gram stiff shafts.and at 49 years old I feel the 130 gram is a bit heavy?
Thanks for the continued videos, I have watched you from here since 2013 when I started golfing for the first time. Cheers.

Mark, txg will often use lie angle to help with shot shape on a fit. Ie if a player’s lie angle is zero but they draw the ball, fix the lie so that it’s 4 toe down to reduce this draw. Do you agree with this or would you prefer to work on the technique issue causing this overdraw? Very interesting video by the by.

Anthony Craig I had a irons fitting last week and by far the most revealing part of it was choosing the right shaft. I’d say spend time on this part to ensure you get the best numbers for accuracy then distance, but also for feel and what feels best for you. I was surprised how much similar shafts could feel very different for me. Enjoy the experience but don’t feel pressured into buying. Good luck 👍

Mark is the best analyst of golf clubs bar none. I would advise beginner golfers to pick a set and play with them. Don't bother with fittings. If you play golf for long enough, you will gradually figure out what you like and what best suits your game. No need for a fitting in my opinion. Often fitters want to push certain products on to you. Also, they really don't know your game. Don't do a fitting.

What are your thoughts on someone like me who are playing the ap1s the chunkier clubs and now I'm learning more on how to strike the ball properly, do you think I would benefit more if I bought some more bladed clubs?

Question mark. I have a set of rsi1 tm irons lots of off set miss them left especially short irons , I have a set of fitted Titliest MB’s that are great I hit them straighter because lofts, lies etc are right, camoared to the rsi1 toe up and offset. Blades of course shorter in length but straight. I’m 62 now which would be better in your option for me to play

Never had a proper fitting. I am interested to see if I can get one length (if I even hit them good) 4-7 and then normal length CB 8-S. I tend to choke down on the longer irons anyway.

I think we are nervous about fitting when we come into the shop. Because we think that if I'm not striking it well or near our best the fit won't work.

Went for a fitting last week, after trying lots of options the fitter told me that best option for me was just to add a lot more weight to the head.

As a junior should I get custom fit because I’m 15 and still growing so do I get fit or get standard and then get fit when I’m older?

I wish that the fitting carts had more clubs than just a 7 iron. Do you tend to be the same lie angle in all manufacturers clubs? I.e. 60.5* not 2* flat? I know mizunos are generally 1* flatter than others. And club length will also factor in. But does something like offset factor in as well?

What is your take Mark on slow swing speed players not having every iron in the bag, like wedge, 8 iron, 6 iron....based on gapping between clubs.

  • @chrischopper4512

I have this when I play. I have a traditional lofted iron set. When I play with most friends they say I hit 8 iron what did you hit. I say 7 and they think they must strike it better or harder neglecting the fact the loft between their 8 and my 7 are the same.

I had to go with cast irons because of cost and budget wise, unfortunately very good condition forged set didn’t fit into my budget like I’d hoped

My biggest concern with a fitting as a high handicap golfer (18), is that my swing may not be exactly the same from day to day. I almost think I need to get fit, then come back a few days later and confirm it. Of course this is not really practical for most fitters. Luckily, with my scores, its not exactly fine tuned and small changes will likely not make much difference.

TX Kevin I have the same concerns. I’ve only been golfing for a year, and my swings are pretty inconsistent from day to day. I’m playing with an old set of no name clubs that my friend gave me, so I’m getting ready to purchase a new set of irons but I’m not sure what I should buy. We have a local pro shop that custom fits(I take lessons there also) a set of irons pretty reasonably, but they’re not name brand heads. They’ll obviously fit you for whatever you want to buy but I’m leery about dropping >$500 on a set to have them no longer fit my swing as I continue to improve.

@@Jediboxer consider the Ping self fitting system. You can get some very forgiving clubs I the G series. I used G 10s for years till recently and enjoyed them. Set would be less than 200 USD or so. Pings system uses measurements to est proper club length and lie. It translates this into a " color coded dot" system so there is a degree of fitting. Don't worry about the ideal shaft to get that extra 5 yds. Just get the shaft stiffness for your swing speed. You will likely be working on alignment, ball striking and eliminating flub shots for a while. Spending 1,000 on new clubs would be a waste. Pings are fine forgiving clubs and they will get you close.

Isnt the D plane discussion pointless? Since the 7 in AP1 is really a 6 in MB, then the d plans spin and all that is still the same for the same loft

Lucas Carman good point, although some people’s 7 irons are now stronger than 5 irons so the end up with lots of sub 30 degree irons which is where it begins to get more difficult to keep straight
27 degree iron is a lot to do with distance ego
