I changed to Callaway Chrome soft this year. Great balls around the greens. Good off the tee. Played Srixon AD333 before. Don't lose many so figured get a premium ball. Happy so far. Never been fitted for a golf ball? Brilliant video! Thanks
I have found its best to change color with season. Orange - Red balls in the spring / summer really pop off young grass, but get lost in leaves in the fall. Neon green show well in leaves and dry rough in the later months.
great video! started in the 1950's--we used tuffies--harder to cut--now, i play with whatever i find, but love to find a chrome soft' as soon as i use a new ball, it's an absolute goner - but it's so gone only i can find it on another day!
Great video full of useful info and common sense, well presented, like all your content, really enjoying this style about drivers irons wedges etc, keep up the good work, also your comments about the yellow balls is spot on, I struggle seeing my ball and others in flight and in the rough at times and have pretty much gone to the yellow all the time, makes life a tad easier, cheers mate :)
I have been playing with Encore ball. Haven't noticed much difference with it compared with the other premium balls. Tried Vice balls also. There not bad but they do scuff up quickly. All the balls out there are good. Not like when I started golf in mid 1970s. The balls were either hard as a rock or cut very easy. Does anyone remember the following balls who are old enough, starflite, maxfi blue and red Max, ultra, or the no name Canadian tire ball
Great vid, I use callaway chrome soft on nice days and the yellow and black truvis on dull days, best ball I've played. Got some new Bridgestone to try out though
I played the ProV1x for years. But when I was fitted for my 917 D2 almost 2 years ago they had ProV1 in the bay. We spent so much time getting the driver right with that ball that I made the switch to try to get those numbers on the course. Over the last month I’ve come to realize that X Type balls suit me better because getting height and spin are not a problem for me. I’m now gaming ProV1x and TP5x depending on wind conditions. The more windy the day, the more likely I am to play the TP5x. On normal to low wind days it’s the ProV1x all the way for me.
I use the Callaway super soft due to the softness around the greens and the distance in which you can hit it . Even if you lose golf balls a lot they are a very good price and they are pretty durable. Overall amazing golf ball
Good vid with excellent points. I had a ball fitting with my pro early this year and narrowed it down to the old chrome soft and pro v1 on performance. He recommended the CS purely due to price difference. Tried the new CS when they came out but don’t like the feel of it at all, so now playing Pro V1.
James that review was a "Load of Balls"! LOL!! Just to be awkward I play 3 different Balls; Vice Pro Soft when playing with mates (good ball at a great price). Crome Soft Truvis (yellow & black)when playing on my own (Bill no mates, coz my eyesight isn`t what it was)! And Pro VX when I`m playing in a Comp. (Great off the tee and control around the Green). But Balls can last me forever, as I don`t hit them far enough to lose them! Some have lasted long than my wives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good upload James! I'm guilty of #1:Paying the ProV1 prices WITH a personal # on them. My thinking was, if I have the best ball (meaning most played by the pros) then I will learn to play UP to the skill needed to use the ball properly. Never mind the fact that I'm probably going to waste $100's on balls BEFORE I get there! I've recently changed my thinking on that.....losing 7 balls on my first round this year taught me pretty quick! Thanks for these videos James; some are forgotten knowledge for me, others, like this one, are reminders that 30 year old clubs and 'lake balls' are ok to get back in the swing of the game! (pun intended)
A very good review James, I have used Pro V 1 for the past eight years because it gives me great spin around the greens and from 100 yards in. I'm lucky that I can buy nearly new from a guy I know which makes them a bit cheaper than brand new. I have tried Wilson Staff spin and soft and have to say they are very good for the price. For me Pro V 1 anytime
Another really good video. For me chrome soft red truvis are the best around, I seem to focus on the red really easily and all round the course they are quality.
Pro V1X and I buy them a sleeve at a time. I started with HP2 tour loved them went to Velocity and liked them. Tried the V1X which went farther and straighter and putted better.
Pro V1 for me! Bought 8 dozen personalised ones at start of the season! Next time I see my coach I’ll ask if they’re right for me! He’ll know! He’s a top teacher! He knows everything! 😜
ive never paid for a golf ball but when i have to go find mine by the river i tend to come back with a few in my pocket:) been liking the super soft callaways and the bridgestone b2.
Very good video; lots of good advice. 12 handicap, currently trying Snell balls. I find the Red has too much spin (fades turn to slices very quickly), but I like the Black. I like the Pro V's, but, as you say, I can't justify US$4 / ball. I tried the Titleist Tour Soft, but its cover is not durable (three of the first balls I used got chips - like an extra dimple - all in one round. Basically, 6 holes per ball!). I've also used (and like) the Bridgestone e6.
I use Bridgestone B330S. Went down to £20 a box when the new Bridgestone Tour balls came out and they're pretty much the same. Stocked up on about 20 boxes so I'm good for a long time!
James LOVE your daily content. Keep it up! Can you help me with one thing you mentioned......you said you use a softer ball on a firm course to help it stop around the greens. I was under the impression the harder balls (higher the compression like a PV1) the more spin and grip they have in the short game green side. Is that the case? Cheers
Excellent. Keep up the great work. Started 2018 with the 2018 Chrome Softs, recently switched to ProV1x and been messing around with the TP5’s as well. Thinking about going back to the Chrome Softs, they are just so consistent off the irons
Never been for a ball fitting . But I know when I try a new ball n it works I will go for it . But to be fair as well I’m in between balls at the moment . TP5X and Bridgestone 330rxs
I use Bridgestone E6 really works good for me, but on some courses i use Wilson dx2 when a softer ball works. Oh yeah both in yellow i can see them better.
Great video James. I currently play Volvik Vivid - bright green model. For years I've used ProV1s and I decided to switch this year to the Vivids for the simple reason that they are way, way (way) easier to find in the rough / the fescue - to me, as a mid capper (13) finding my 'wides' is far more important than the slight loss of spin on shorter shots, which I can play for anyways. I've never really understood the distance argument...all "decent" golf balls roughly the same distance don't they - the USGA and R&A have rules in this regard? I'd suggest for anybody except really good golfers differences in quality of strike are going to cause greater variation in distance than which golf ball you are playing.
I used Srixon Ad333 until recently I have switched to Callaway Warbird 3s as I like the soft feel around the greens. Back to your comment on buying cheap balls for beginners, they should buy Dunlops from Sports Direct. A box of 12 is about a fiver I think
I’ve tried to get fitted but the pros I’ve asked said just to play with the balls around the greens and see which one feels better, I currently have a the chrome soft and srixon z star they both seem to be ok but I always have the doubt of not knowing what’s a good ball for me
Costco Kirkland 3 piece urethane cover ball. Made in China. $24 for two dozen. Just bought another 48. Just need to be a Costco member. May not be available world wide. Play fine for me, a 14 handicap golfer. Great video, James.
I use 2 different types. Both are Topflite Gamer soft and Topflite bomb. I'm a highhhh handicapper and these work great for me. I got fitted at golf galaxy for these and have no regrets.
Wilson DX2 because my swing speed is low I don't compress a hard ball. I get distance and great feel off the wedges and putter. Great colours but don't use the red one really hard to see it land on green grass
I still have 3 double dozens of Nike Mojo's that I'm working through. lol On occasion I pick up a dozen of different balls for variety. Picked up some Callaway chromesoft and kinda like them.
I’m a 14 handicap but I’m going down fast in the last months, I’ve changed to pro v1 a year ago and I’m not considering changing to any other ball just because of the trust I’ve put in that ball. For me price isn’t an issue so I’d rather just pay for the best than play with a cheaper option
James Robinson Golf nah James, you keep up the great work by doing these amazing videos. Definitely gained a subscriber, one thing I thought is if I’m gonna spend money for lessons why not gain those 10/15 yards by using a better ball?
I was buying pre used golf balls from my local course shop was usinh taylormade mix bag and felt ok then tried callaway and felt they were far better for me didnt realise there would be such a difference in how they felt so I'm using callaway supersoft now cheap good ball get them cheaper new than i could buy them used in the course shop aswell
As Lee Trevino once said "You can either play the game or you can't" If Lee played 72 holes with a Pro V and 72 with a rock hard Top Flite how much better would his score be with the Pro V? 10 strokes, 5 strokes, or the same.
I wish brands would sell combo packs. Imagine Titleist selling a box with 4 different sleeves to test what you like. Prov1 Prov1x AVX and Tour Soft. I would buy one even if it mean paying a bit more. Lots of stores don’t sell sleeves so trying out 4 different premium balls could cost almost $200
AVX. Love the lower spin, lower flight on driver. Soft enough for me around green and putting. Have played the Kirkland-brand Costco balls. Very good at about a $16 a dozen including tax and shipping.
Spotting golf balls is one of those things I never was able to do. Some people can just see it a mile away, but even with contacts I lose the ball every time
Always worth getting a fitting, even if you don't game a premium ball a good fitter will recommend a budget ball as well, Most recent club fitting the difference between prov1 and prov1x was unreal
I don’t have access to a pro to do all the fittings you talk about. You have to join a club. But in my town the pro doesn’t fit clubs like you do. Fit a ball? They have never fit a putter. “Take it out on the practice green and putt a few. If you like it I’ll knock $30 off it.” I want to do it your way but I out of luck!
Pro tip: If you want to get new golf balls to try cheap, just pick up the ones you find on the way to yours! If you don’t find it boom, straight into testing!
James Robinson Golf a friend suggested a softer golf ball but I recently had gastric bypass and I’m having to essentially relearn my swing and game since losing a bit of weight. I liked the prov1 just trying the softer ball to see if there will be a distance difference
Titliest prov 1x Lake-balls from Amazon ...I’ve paid top dollar for these balls in the past got one out the box and lost it with the first hit 😩 I know I’m buying my old balls back but at half the cost and most if not all without a blemish ...go check them out 🏌️♂️
Your right James everything these days are just so expensive , rinsing the poor golfer dry 😫.....I need to get lessons from my son who’s also a pga professional so I can keep it on the fairway ...unfortunately he’s also too expensive haha😀 ....keep up the good work , liking your posts
I have used Titleist ProV and (with my game) they are expensive and don’t perform any different the any of the high end manufacturers balls. That said, I use mostly found balls some are high end well made balls. I give the common Topflight, Wilson, and Nike balls away. JMHO
James Robinson, Seems to work for me. Wish someone would test them. My irons are old with traditional lofts trajectory is high so spin isn’t that important. The packaging says they are high spin but not sure how true that is.
Pro V1 to RB Tour / X possibly Nb Cut to your cloth but if you want premium result premium ball required. A low quality ball can provide low quality results and then turn the player off / away from golf! No good for anyone🙂🙂🙂
Decent and sensible advice but the one thing you missed 'when you find the ball that works for you, use the same ball every time', I see guys who pull a ball out their bag and don't even look at what kind of ball it is...
You are correct in what you say. I tend use soft balls on a links course and a harder ball for a parkland course.
Excellent topic. 1 thru 4 are the most important but I do feel 3 and 4 make the most sense around the green vs distance great review
I changed to Callaway Chrome soft this year. Great balls around the greens. Good off the tee.
Played Srixon AD333 before. Don't lose many so figured get a premium ball. Happy so far. Never been fitted for a golf ball?
Brilliant video! Thanks

I am using the callaway
chrome soft, and love it.
Just played my first round with Bridgestone Tour B330S and OMG they were amazing, driving, irons and chipping were great
Great video. This is the first video I have seen that discusses the various issues relating to the purchase of golf balls. Thank You.
great video! started in the 1950's--we used tuffies--harder to cut--now, i play with whatever i find, but love to find a chrome soft' as soon as i use a new ball, it's an absolute goner - but it's so gone only i can find it on another day!

Srixon Q Star, been using them for a few years now. Great response, feel, and cost - ticks all of my categories
Great vid, I use callaway chrome soft on nice days and the yellow and black truvis on dull days, best ball I've played. Got some new Bridgestone to try out though
It’s all about skill and budget. You cover the topic well!
Thanks Andy! Appreciate the kind words as always

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 stop!
I’m a 9 handicap golfer and I’m using Callaway chrome soft,great feel,great sound,great spin,good distance and also a fantastic price 👌
Tommie Thatcher love the chrome soft 6.5 hc.
Hard to argue with the Chromie!
Where I am Bridgestone are cheaper and will perform as well
Good upload James!
I'm guilty of #1:Paying the ProV1 prices WITH a personal # on them. A very good review James, I have used Pro V 1 for the past eight years because it gives me great spin around the greens and from 100 yards in. Another really good video. For me chrome soft red truvis are the best around, I seem to focus on the red really easily and all round the course they are quality.
Thanks Matthew!!! Chrome soft are a lovely ball I must say
Pro V1X and I buy them a sleeve at a time. I started with HP2 tour loved them went to Velocity and liked them. Tried the V1X which went farther and straighter and putted better.
Thanks a lot for sharing.. Cheers!!
15 Handicap, I play the Srixon Q-Star Tour. Works great for me.
Deciding between Srixon Z star XV and ProV1 at the moment. May find I fancy other options, but those two stick out the most.
Been using Bridgestone 330 RX for last year or so, Titleist before. Very satisfied with the switch. Will go to Tour B Rx when run out of what I have.
Bridgestone Tour B RXS but had a couple dozen Snell's coming. Hoping to save money while keeping the feel and control.
Can’t argue with that Shane!
Snell MTB Red. Love them. Long off the Driver and get great spin near the greens, and doesn't break the bank.
What more could we want!!!
Now that the MTB Reds have been discontinued I use the MTB X. More distance (high compression) and a ton more spin.
Just bought the Volvik's and the Bridgestone's..., both the Vivid, XT, B6...., using the Callaway Supersoft on the course.
Enjoy Albert!! All great balls
Pro V1 for me! Bought 8 dozen personalised ones at start of the season! Next time I see my coach I’ll ask if they’re right for me! He’ll know! He’s a top teacher! He knows everything! 😜
😂😂😂😂
Chrome soft, great spin and I prefer yellow. Will try Vice pro soft soon ,
ive never paid for a golf ball but when i have to go find mine by the river i tend to come back with a few in my pocket:) been liking the super soft callaways and the bridgestone b2.
Ive been using the srizon z star recents and it has completely changed my short game
Bridgestone e6 soft. Just started using them and they feel great. I’m off 28 and was recommended by my pro.
Nice! Good balls. Good price. Good recommendation, good pro!
Very good video; lots of good advice. 12 handicap, currently trying Snell balls. I find the Red has too much spin (fades turn to slices very quickly), but I like the Black. Cheers! Appreciate that! A lot of people saying they like the Snell Balls
Titleist hooked me up with the AVX so I’m pumped to try them. Otherwise I like the Kirkland, Project A and the Chrome Soft Truvis.
Love a hook up!
I use Bridgestone B330S. Went down to £20 a box when the new Bridgestone Tour balls came out and they're pretty much the same. Stocked up on about 20 boxes so I'm good for a long time!
Can’t beat em at that price !!!
James with the tireless avx first time using it I shot 35 for nine holes one under
Wowser !!! Game that baby!
Switched to Titleist AVX from ProV1x. AVX has less spin around green with a great soft feel.
u want more sping around the green, and softer balls I feel have more spin on drives.
Hi James,
I'm a high handicapper but Srixon ultisoft have become my favourite ball. They are straight off the tee and soft around the greens.
Nice combo that Paul!
Just moved onto those TP5x they seem pretty good so far
James LOVE your daily content. Keep it up! Can you help me with one thing you mentioned......you said you use a softer ball on a firm course to help it stop around the greens. I was under the impression the harder balls (higher the compression like a PV1) the more spin and grip they have in the short game green side. Is that the case? Cheers

TP5X, and I am not going to change as I am really happy with the ball.

Absolutely Matthew, some do go a little further depending on spin characteristics etc. I’ve seen lots of people gain distance with balls like the TP5
Use tp5 at the minute , going to try the avx soon though
Awesome! They’re decent I used some. It long ago
I used Srixon Ad333 until recently I have switched to Callaway Warbird 3s as I like the soft feel around the greens.
Back to your comment on buying cheap balls for beginners, they should buy Dunlops from Sports Direct. A box of 12 is about a fiver I think
I started to use Titliest AVX from TP5x. They go just as far and more durable. Im off a 10 handicap with Titliest 716 MB
Nice Stephen! Soft clubs and soft balls! What a feeling!
Lovin the vids James!
Thanks Micheal! I appreciate your comment! And I’ve heard these balls are pretty good! And cheap as hell!
I use 2 different types. Both are Topflite Gamer soft and Topflite bomb. I'm a highhhh handicapper and these work great for me. I got fitted at golf galaxy for these and have no regrets.
If your fitted your fitted dude. Good shout
I find Taylormade Project a are the best ball for my game, 18 handicap. Must be popular ball as keep getting more expensive unfortunately.
Supply and demand Brad! Not that that means it’s right!
Pro v1 tried them all that is the best for me
Wilson DX2 because my swing speed is low I don't compress a hard ball. I get distance and great feel off the wedges and putter. Great colours but don't use the red one really hard to see it land on green grass
I still have 3 double dozens of Nike Mojo's that I'm working through. lol On occasion I pick up a dozen of different balls for variety. Picked up some Callaway chromesoft and kinda like them.
mojos are awful
I play the chrome soft normal and find it excellent re feel/durability/price but was thinking of trying out the TP5 normal
Give it a go Mark, what would you be hoping to gain from the switch?
James Robinson Golf I just want to see is more expensive price worth it but heard a lot of good things about the tp5!
Gotta trust it Mattia!!! Keep up the awesome progress.!!!
James Robinson Golf nah James, you keep up the great work by doing these amazing videos. Definitely gained a subscriber, one thing I thought is if I’m gonna spend money for lessons why not gain those 10/15 yards by using a better ball?
mattia ravelli cheers mate. Appreciate that. ⛳️👍🏼🔥🎥
Snell MTB Red, my favorite ball regardless of price
Lots of people saying this Jesse!
Enjoyed the vid pal 👍🏻
I was buying pre used golf balls from my local course shop was usinh taylormade mix bag and felt ok then tried callaway and felt they were far better for me didnt realise there would be such a difference in how they felt so I'm using callaway supersoft now cheap good ball get them cheaper new than i could buy them used in the course shop aswell
thing I never thought about is changing to a harder ball when the ground is softer but makes sense thats a very good point
Thanks Eoin. Just food for thought ⛳️🤙🏼🎥
Srixon Z star or Taylormade Project A. Both incredible performers with exceptional feel for less than the market leaders 👍
I bought 6 dozen of Nike RZN platinum when the price dropped to £17 a dozen £1.40 a ball bargain especially when you lose a few :) :)
Can’t go wrong with that James!
Srixon Z Star went on sale for $20 s dozen the week of the US Open. It’s a superb ball and the price was right
Can’t argue with that! $20! Can’t afford not to use them!
James Robinson Golf brilliant business on their part. I’m going to use that ball for a long long time
Taylormade TP5 and there quality, I play off 12. Can’t see me changing anytime soon!!!
Nice Antony!!!
As Lee Trevino once said "You can either play the game or you can't" If Lee played 72 holes with a Pro V and 72 with a rock hard Top Flite how much better would his score be with the Pro V? 10 strokes, 5 strokes, or the same.
I use whatever's available. Mostly Top Flite, Titleist, or Bridgestone.
Most places over here sell sleeves dude
Best vid you have done. Vice Pro
Thanks Peter! Wasn’t sure when filming it but pleased with how it’s come out
I am playing Wilson Staff DX2 (Junior 13 years 18 hcp)
AVX. Love the lower spin, lower flight on driver. Soft enough for me around green and putting. Have played the Kirkland-brand Costco balls. Very good at about a $16 a dozen including tax and shipping.
Kirkland getting a lot of press! AVX a great ball!
Ever tried the volvik s3 n s4?
Use Bridgestone Tour BX S at the moment
Spotting golf balls is one of those things I never was able to do. Some people can just see it a mile away, but even with contacts I lose the ball every time
I've always played the balls I find. I play off 14 but loose too many to warrant buying them.
Srixon Z Star
Callaway windburners
I play off 36 just started so my swing isn't there yet, would it be worth me getting fitted for a ball? I tend to lose around 3 balls a game.
Always worth getting a fitting, even if you don't game a premium ball a good fitter will recommend a budget ball as well,
Most recent club fitting the difference between prov1 and prov1x was unreal
What course is that James? Lovely building in the background.
Nevermind realise you said it right at the end
Hahaha no probs David! It’s s great track. You local?
From Ireland but will have to take a golf trip to England and Scotland some great courses to play!
David absolutely David, I’m looking at a trip to portrush next year before the open to play with my old man. ⛳️🔥
Beautiful course for sure. Make sure you go to the Harbour Bar after for a nice cold Guiness.
Chrome Soft for consistent putting and approach shots #forme.
All about the scoring Joe!
I definitely think that Honma 6 layer golf balls is so worth it on a good day. Lol
pro v 1 expensive but like the quality
Chrome Soft
I don’t have access to a pro to do all the fittings you talk about. You have to join a club. But in my town the pro doesn’t fit clubs like you do. Fit a ball? They have never fit a putter. “Take it out on the practice green and putt a few. If you like it I’ll knock $30 off it.” I want to do it your way but I out of luck!
Taylormade tour preferred x 2014
But i like pro v1 too....but way too pricey
Gotta come down to th bottom like allo!
Line*
Pro tip: If you want to get new golf balls to try cheap, just pick up the ones you find on the way to yours! If you don’t find it boom, straight into testing!
#10 makes too much sense. Thanks
Titleist DTrusoft actually just switched to this from ProV1
Interesting choice Brandon! How come that switch came about? Not feeling the benefit from the more expensive ball?
James Robinson Golf a friend suggested a softer golf ball but I recently had gastric bypass and I’m having to essentially relearn my swing and game since losing a bit of weight. I liked the prov1 just trying the softer ball to see if there will be a distance difference
Srixon AD333 👍👍👍
Titliest prov 1x Lake-balls from Amazon ...I’ve paid top dollar for these balls in the past got one out the box and lost it with the first hit 😩 I know I’m buying my old balls back but at half the cost and most if not all without a blemish ...go check them out 🏌️♂️
Half price means a lot to any guy doesn’t it!!!
JMHO
I use Wilson Zip $20 for two dozen at Walmart
Nice!! How do you find them?
James Robinson, Seems to work for me. Wish someone would test them. My irons are old with traditional lofts trajectory is high so spin isn’t that important. The packaging says they are high spin but not sure how true that is.
I prefer to use premium balls. Can't afford to lose the amount I do though lol
TP5X
Tireless avx
Pro V1 to RB Tour / X possibly
Nb Cut to your cloth but if you want premium result premium ball required.
