FRELIMO Leader Samora Machel Honoured By President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania | May 1975

The President of Frelimo Mr. Samora Machel -- who will become Mozambique's first President when the country achieves full independence on 25 June -- was honoured by Tanzania's President Julius Nyerere on Thursday (22 May).
At a mass rally in Dar Es Salaam President Nyerere presented Mr. Machel with the Mt. Kilimanjaro Medal of the First Order.
President Nyerere praised Frelimo for liberating their country and called on them to maintain their strength and unity. He also said Mozambique's independence will not be complete if other African states are still being ruled by colonial powers.
Mr. Machel thanked the Tanzanian leaders for the assistance they had provided for his country, including 1.4 million shillings (about 80,000 sterling) from the defence forces.
