Starting from smaller hobby machine is a brilliant idea
I know that you have used washers but many of these machines don't come with extra washer for clamping
So When using those Wing nuts. Use a washer underneath. As this will make it better to tighten up and also prevent the slot getting damaged
And also more easier to un tighten when finished
