  • ABS Master Smith Lin Rhea demonstrates how to forge his X-Rhea utility knife at the Arkansas Historical Museum, Little Rock, Arkansas. ABS Apprentice Smith Stuart Smith of South Africa filmed and edited this step by step video and says: “The process is complete from beginning to send, not time lapse, just pure forging.” For more information on bladesmithing techniques please visit the ABS Forum at www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/

Any time someone makes something look this easy, effortless and thoughtless, has put more difficult time, effort and thought than we can fathom

Mr. Rhea makes it looks so easy, but we know better. Fantastic work.

thank you, I love this way of joining the handle to the blade.. A significant improvement on my next "squirrel tail" type knife I make...or did you call it a beaver tail...

Maybe punching a square or rectangular hole through the beaver tail would save some time, and solve the problem of a too short rivet. A very cool mod to the Romano British knife.

What type of steel stock is he using ?

  • @cjknives7471

And what was the other way that he told you that he could have fixed the short rivet other than tack welding it?

Ordinarily, welding carbon steel isn't a great idea, and it's better for it to be entirely forged from a pure skill and craftsmanship perspective, but there's two things favoring the success of welding that rivet in this case. One, if all you need to do is fuse it with the arc and no filler added, the metallurgy is unchanged (provided you have adequate shield gas and don't hold the heat there forever). Two, it's not on a high stress area of the knife, a mild steel rivet should hold up fine, so even if you precipitate all the carbon out it's not going to affect strength. Bonus, you can forge out a filler rod from the same steel if you need to add material, it's such a small area that the carbon doesn't have time to precipitate out unless you take forever tacking it on.

Tends to happen when you play against any building, even a particularly strong smith would struggle in such a competition.

I certainly am not aware of any blades with that particular variation of the blacksmith knife handle style that predate him. It is certainly possible even probable that someone has done it before, but he does appear to have made those improvements on his own.
