Paddle Tire vs Knobby Tire on Monster Sand Dune Hill Climb

  • An experiment to find out the difference a paddle tire makes on a motorcycle in the dunes. Same bike and rider, the only difference is the tire. I realize the knobby wasn't new. This video was made with a $0 budget and that is what I had. 2002 KTM 520 EXC motorcycle at Sand Mountain, Nevada.

    The results are not a surprise. Think about the purpose of the tires. A knobbie is designed to dig, which is exactly what it did. It dug a hole and the rear of the bike sank. A paddle tire lifts the back of the bike when it comes in contact with the sand, as well as pushing the bike forward. If you watch your rear wheel closely in the video, you can see it happening as soon as you take off . How about doing a comparison between a knobbie front tire, a three rib front tire and a trials (universal) type front tire on the sand. I ride a DR650 in Michigan sand and I have learned some interesting things about how tires effect off road motorcycles.

    hopefully someone is still answering questions, I have a CR125 that I ride on both dirt hard surface and Dune sands on the same day in the same location, this place is called Juniper Dunes in Washington state. the dirt tires work out there but can cause a lot of frustration when its been really hot and the sand is nice and soft, the dune hills are not huge by any means but there can be some areas where the length of the run before you hit a hill can be short so you need that traction, I am looking for the best tire for 70% sand and 30% dirt to ride on when there and I will have another just dirt tire for everywhere else. this Dunlop Geomax MX11 Sand/Mud Motorcycle Tire looks like it might fit the program I need being the tread is not going to beat me up like a cup tire would on the harder surface. any other suggestions?

      Leland Hill that tire almost looks like a paddle. It is probably a good choice for what you are doing. I have never tried it myself though.

    Brand new sand tire vs 70% tread life knobby. Should be comparing new vs new, plus that tread pattern isnt a deep pattern in the first place. There are better tires out there for this test, shinko is definite loss tho.

    • @alexkram
      @alexkram  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I disagree. If you are going to the dunes you can take the time and expense to install a sand paddle tire or you can just use the tire that is already on your bike. This test shows the difference there will be in performance at the dunes. Why would you install a brand new knobby right before going to the dunes? If you are going to the trouble of mounting a new tire anyway, just put on a paddle. Also, see the description above where I mention the video was made with a $0 budget. If you send me a new knobby tire I will happily test it for you.

    Riding a knobby in the dunes adds a challenge and a well experienced rider can do without much problem. I think your video is misleading because the rider lacks the skills, I can see it from watching the vid.

      this bike doesnt have one nor does any 4 stroke motor... 4 strokes are low rpm torque motors... a 2 stroke has a power surge(nicknamed "power band") that only happens in a 2 stroke motor do to the exhaust RESONANT FREQUENCY, and intake and exhaust timing that produces a high revving response that causes the motor to to increase rpm very quickly... NOW DOES A $STROKE MOTOR DO THAT???? NO!!!
