This man makes the most valid, truthful and comprehensive camera reviews on TH-cam! He really does use the equipment thoroughly and is a true expert. It also helps that he speaks eloquently. Thanks for the reviews!
You clearly know a great deal about camera gear already, but many people viewing this video won't understand how sensor size impacts image quality and ISO performance. The differences become especially relevant when comparing crop cameras such as the 70D to full-frame bodies at similar price points, such as the 5D Mark II. I've talked with hundreds of buyers after they bought a crop camera and were disappointed with the low-light images, so I hope the comparison saves some people the pain.
There was a sale on 70d at our local camera store and they were selling new 70d for 599 euros. I already have 6d so I "had" to buy it just to have more reach while birding as even 600mm on full frame sometimes feel not enough. Thanks for the review Tony - made me more happy with the purchase. Also the video capabilities on 70d seem great. So now I can use 6d for portraits and low light and 70d for birding and sports.
Tony, I've watched over 15 or so of your videos and this was by far the most resonating for me. Thank you so much for simplifying the process. I continue to be a fan.
Tony. You are in Loveeee with Canon 5D Mark 2 :) Btw... Best Review not only for Canon 70D but it also covers almost every camera in the Canons line up. Brilliant!!!
Excellent review! I bought a 6d used like new on amazon for 1,549 with no tax and free two day shipping! It was a steal ha! Your right about the full frame sensor its A HUGE DIFFERENCE AND IS A WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE!
They are the same camera in many ways, you're right. However, the 7D is far cheaper used, which is why I recommend a used 7D over a 70D in many scenarios. Getting the best photos means spending your budget on the equipment that'll make a difference in your photos. If you don't have a need for the 70Ds improvements, you can get the same pictures for much less with a used 7D, and save your money for lenses, lights, software, etc.
I did watch part of the review video and as an editor I can say your on camera personas are quite compelling. Not sure where you reside but the feeling from the review is ultra laid back like west coast ..Washington or California .. It exudes light and airiness... pleasant for a review video where someone usually is screaming or will be abrasive. So you two really seem to have it together. It is almost like a jazz appreciation radio show but with cameras. It is great if you ask me... nice too that you include the guy in the "control room" very nice touch .
Yeah, I agree with all of those... the loss of the white balance button is really frustrating for me, since I shoot video with it (I shoot raw stills, so it doesn't much matter there)
In theory, if you had proper focus pulling equipment and enough practice, you could do it manually (and it would be even more accurate). The focus pulling gear would probably be as expensive as the upgrade to a 70D, however.
The Fuji X-Pro1 has an APS-C sized sensor, and thus it will have the same low-light limitations as every APS-C camera, whether mirrorless or DSLR. If it's good enough for your needs, that's perfect, but it won't be as good as a full-frame 35mm camera.
I have to say Tony, even though you disagree I find it very impressive you find time to reply to so many of your subscribers, lots of respect for that, also your book has helped me heaps.
Yes, the 5D Mark II's AF system is fine for those situations. The 16-35 is a great lens for full-frame cameras, but honestly, it's pretty rare that I use that super-wide-angle range. It's just not all that useful. For most travel and landscape work, I'd rather shoot a panorama (as described in Chapter 2 of Stunning Digital Photography, links in the description).
Hi Tony, I just wanted to thank you for such an informative video. I rarely am able to sit through longer clips on youtube when I'm searching for information, but your video kept me well educated and was fun to watch. I a few years ago had a Canon XTi, the first DLSR I ever owned, after a couple of years I went to a T3 and just yesterday decided to move to the 70D, it's expected to arrive tomorrow. I have a wide array of lenses such as the 50mm 1.4 prime, 18-55 kit, 50-250IS, 18-135, and a 18-200. all with various filters. I do a little of video work and upon watching your review I was very pleased to see that this 70D offers that 'tracking system' not to mention it focuses decently well for a subject in motion. I'm very glad my extensive search landed me on your page, I've subscribed for future videos, and look forward to viewing them in the future. Keep up the fantastic work. - Jeff
They'll both get the shot. The 70D can also be your camcorder, if you care about video. The 6D will give you much better image quality. The 70D will definitely be better for wildlife. Check my Photography Buying Guide (links in the description) for detailed information about the differences between camera bodies and how to choose lenses--it'll save you a ton of money.

Really useful video. It's so rare to find a genuine review with so many worthwhile recommendations with sensible justifications. Typically you find someone pushing one device over another no matter what the job need.
I understand you'd prefer I use the term "crop" instead of "compact". I apologize for any inconvenience. I'll consider changing my terminology, however, I do need to use a term that people who don't have your background in camera technology can understand. After all, you knew what I meant, but someone who didn't already understand the differences might find "compact" to be clearer.
Canon should watch your review and use your very adequate criticism and suggestions to better their products! Great review...the best one, and I saw several. Thank you.
Me personally, I wouldn't worry about the actuations. I've never had a shutter fail, and I shot constantly... but your mileage may vary! I don't know what the going rate for 5D2's is in euros, so I can't comment on the price.
I was feeling a little bummed out after buying this camera and looking up some good and bad reviews. After watching this full review though I don't regret it one bit! Thank you for sharing and posting this!
Great video Tony, you covered everything that I wanted to know. I have now decided to buy a 70D as a result, my interest is general purpose photography, nothing specific so I think that the 70D will be just perfect. Thanks again for all your hard work!
If you're doing stars, then yeah, full frame is the way to go. You definitely want a 6D for stars... the live view is really helpful compared to a 5D Mark II, and the image quality at your required higher ISOs is much better than the crop cameras. Check my 6D video review and my Photography Buying Guide for more info.
Great review Tony! I have been extremely happy with my Canon 70D! I have been filming my voice student's lessons and recording sessions with great results. The image quality far surpasses my previous camera which was a Canon Vixia HF G1O camcorder. Thank you for all of your insightful reviews and expertise!!!
I know this video is six years old, but I’m seriously learning exactly what I want to know right now. Thank you!! Eventually I’ll need to get caught up with you in real-time tech, but for now I just purchased the T3i yesterday, found this today and I now already want to get a used 70d as well. Hahah
Hey Tony, Thanks for posting the review. I got mine on 28th Sep and loving it. I also have ordered your book from Amazon and going through it now. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge.
I'd like to share this: I've just got a 70D, and I'm amazed with the 7fps and the ISO performance (coming from a T2i). BUT, I noticed that most of my pics were soft. I searched a little bit, and I found a lot of guys with the same problem. Last night, I did AF micro adjustments and everything is way better now. It's like the AF Sensor is not that versatile on factory defaults. For example, 70-200 f2.8, on 70mm I needed just +1, but in 200mm, +18. The Tokina 11-16 was a pain to use, everything would be out of focus all the time, but after calibrating it's working nice. I'm saying this because I've read a lot of people saying that they would sell everything and switch to Nikon, or that the 7D was way better, or that Canon is selling crap. Hope this helps.
i seem to keep stumbling upon your reviews as I hunt for "the perfect camera" this month. Thank you for putting SO much time and analysis into these. this video might be the best "overall review" as it COMPARES all the different versions I was looking for. I've got to get your book as well - since you're such a fantastic teacher! Deb Cole
just bought your book on Amazon Kindle. Can't wait to dive into the knowledge you poured into this piece of work + art. I hope you find uber success from your work as an artist AND a teacher, sharing your insight and experience with millions who find you online.
Something some people might see if they’re doing research into this old camera that isn’t mentioned in the video is that may change your mind on the 70D over the 7D for sports/moving photography is that the 70D has phase detection over contrast autofocus which is a little less accurate but better for moving subjects.
Well, if I were stuck with one camera, it would be the most expensive camera I own, the 5D Mark III. But every camera has its strengths and weaknesses.
Super awesome, objective review. You really took a lot of time to make this video and I appreciate it. I am doing the same thing as you...selling the 7D and buying the 70D for all the same reasons. Subscribed!
Thanks for all your help in making it easy for me to decide on what camera I will be getting next. A great review Tony really appreciate all the work you have put in to the making of this video Thanks again Brian Geoghegan
Your great quality video and explanation make it much better to decide whether to buy a 70D as a backup for my 6D, thanks for putting the time into this.
This is the ideal video I was looking for! I was considering buying this camera but wanted one suitable for a bunch of uses and your review has covered all bases and I know it's suitable for my means. Thank you 👍
I had an easier time getting my Eye-Fi configured than the 70D WiFi, but the Eye-Fi is only good for transferring pictures (though I like the Eye-Fi mobile app better). It doesn't allow remote triggering or live viewing through the camera.
Hi, Paul. This is the type of topic that I cover in my Photography Buying Guide (available using the third link in the description). There's no one right answer, but the 18-135 is more versatile.
Hi Tony Nice review, thank you ... just a little hint ... a lot of devices, printers, cameras and others hate channel 1 on the wireless routers... change your wireless channels from Auto to manual 11 which is safest channel in wireless band, then try to connect your cameras to your wireless (often manual WiFi channels are accessible in Advanced part of your router settings)
Well presented and informative review. I appreciate how well the pros and cons were explained. I know it's and older video, but I had my heart set on Nikon, and after watching several of your videos I think Canon will be the better choice. Thank you for never sounding like a salesperson, or pitching a specific product. You clearly allow for the viewer to decide.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the variation of cameras "out there"... I come from a "Canon family", so because of the lenses i can use, it was naturally a Canon i would buy. And after watching your videos, and others, i have decided for buying a 70D. For me it`s for shooting pictures, and videos of my daughter when she is doing sports, school stuff. I would also take some nature pictures when we go for walks with our dog, and for the family holidays in Italy (we drive through Europe from Norway, so alot to capture along the way). My brother has the 7D, and we also have an 5D Mk2 in our circle of friends, so always possible to borrow camera for specific photo-shooting, but as you said, for the "allround capabillity" of the 70D, thats the one for me..... So again, thanks for great insight into this camera.....
Hi Tony, Great work. I'm new to this. Received a 70D as an award from work so I didn't have the luxury of selecting a camera. 1st dslr. I have been relying on your videos for introductions and training. Plan on purchasing a kindle an subsequently your books
Fantastic review, Tony. I'm amazed at how superficial many of the other reviews are. I'm really tired of seeing people take their new camera or lens out of the packing box. I'm interested in bird photography and based on your analysis will be buying a used 7d.
Great video Tony, thanks. Could you please mention which lens you were using in that video to get the shallow depth of field from a crop sensor when switching focus from camera to face etc.? Keep up the great work!
Your honest reviews and recommendations are much appreciated. Always like how you often recommend the cheaper gear even though you obviously wealthy. Great all around review and comparison.
The Canon image quality is "about as bad as you can get" but you are "still recommending them?" You reinforced what I've learned from many reviews that the Nikon D5200/5300 is best for me. Thanks for the review Tony.
Hey Tony, As I've used both the 70D and 7D, I think there is a slight difference between the 2 cameras. The 70D is slightly better for sensitivity and dynamic range. Thanks for posting your informative review nonetheless.
Been eyeing which to get on second hand for 7D and 70D. Price has been down these days and your share Tony, provides a clear cut distinction of particulars needs. Still 70D costs more than 7D. There are still less than 10K shutter counts here in Phils. on FB Marketplace. USD470.00 vs USD310.00 respectively. Thank you.
Thanks for this review Tony, I am in desperate need of a dslr to film behind the scene videos, I don't film it myself as I am usually busy shooting my projects, I let my assistant or anyone in the studio to do the job while we are shooting, they end up usually producing a horrible footage, out of focus, unstable, shacking nonstop video clips that frustrates me! I am very convinced now after watching your reviews about the 70D, it might actually be the one that will work with my behind the scene videos.
Thanks for the wonderful videos - One question I have a SL1 as a new step up for portrait, outdoors, and events I have 3 options. 1.7D 2.5D MK2 3.70D Of course all are used but looking at these options unless you have another option. I appreciate all your work and any help you can give me. Thank you for your time!
Hi Tony, I have a question for you and hope you can advise, I've just read that on the 70d all the cross point focus points only work with lenses of f5.6 or faster. I use the sigma 50-500 which is 4.5-6.3 and was thinking about getting the 70d primarily for flying birds because the cross type focus points would greatly improve my hit rate from the 60d. So the question is would all the cross point focus points work with the sigma lens..? Hope that makes sense. Many many thanks..Nigel-uk
Hi Tony, Thanks for the video review. I'm a big fan of you and i like the way you deliver your presentation. Appreciate you for all the work you have been doing. I have a question for you. I'm currently using to Canon 60D with Canon 24-105mm, Canon 10-22mm, Canon 50mm F1.4, Canon 55-250mm lenses. My main interests are landscape photography & family pictures. For video i mostly use my canon handycam & occasionally shoot videos in my 60D. As a 60D user, Is it worth upgrading to the new of 70D?
Wow...Best reviewer I've ever come across..Cheers and Happy New Year from NYC !! Was just about to go to BH Photo and now I'm going to make some different decisions. Thank you.
Thanks for such a detailed review. I took a lot of photos and videos for my kids soccer and hockey game. I have a starter point & shoot right now Canon SX50 HS and is looking to upgrade. So the Canon 70D would be a good choice for these kind of shooting?
That's very personal to you, your needs, and your budget, so I'd watch this video closely, and my other two 70D reviews. Also read my Photography Buying Guide (links in the description). If you have specific questions about the capabilities, feel free to ask.
Absolutely great video!! I used to own the T3i and on Tuesday will be picking up a 70D (used) for a very good price! Thanks again for the help with this journey.
Gianluca Granillo in my experience I definitely felt the change. While yes, the 70D is a minor upgrade when it came to the image quality of pictures, it most definitely felt and performs like a more professional camera when it comes to battery life/video/admin functionality. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I did mine!
Tony, IMHO, you can put a surgeon’s scalpel in the hands of a child and just have a bleeding patient. But a surgeon can do wonders with stuff around the house. I trust that your book will aid in what the “photograph” needs know and the equipment will just be icing on the cake. I just downloaded your “How to Create Stunning Digital Photography” Kindle version. I can’t wait to read and practice what you suggest. Watching this video you come off as, knowledgeable, experienced, friendly, and honest- Thank you.
That's really up to your budget. Don't forget to save some money for lenses, lights, etc. Check my Photography Buying Guide (using the 'worldwide' link in the description) for detailed recommendations for wedding photographers.
Hi Tony, thanks for a great review. Really cleared up a few queries that I have; a lot of info packed into a short amount of time! Think I am going to go with the 70d now; can you suggest some good alround lenses (wide and tele) ?
great video, looking at the 70D. Have used my Canon 20D for a few years and time to upgrade. Have two L lens that have more than happy with. I am the all around user, done a few weddings but not for a living and daughters sporting events as well.
Wow! The 20D was a great camera in it's time. I think it was really underrated. I bought the 10D so it was too soon for me to get the 20D. My next camera after the 10d was the 1d MkIIn . . . was the high end camera of its time. So did you get the 70D? If so what are your thoughts? I'm thinking about getting the 70D, mainly for video.
Thanks so much Tony! Would be so grateful if you shared some of your Menu C.Fn II Autofocus settings for shooting Osprey (for example). Thanks again! Will
Good review Tony. I have seen several of your reviews. Your coverage of the subject is so much useful. I am seriously considering purchasing the 70d, as against the 7dM2. The point where I am unable to make up my mind is the Kit Lens: (1) 18:135 and (2) 18:55 are available. In addition, I am a bundle of (3) 18:135 and 55:250 is also available. I am finding it difficult to choose among these three options. Also, I am considering Tamron 90 f2.8 for the long range zoom. Please help me choose. Thanks.
Great review! I'm hoping to get a 70d soon and am really contemplating on which 2nd lens to grab. I've decided to get the kit 18-135mm stm for my general uses but want another one for low-light situations. I'm deciding between the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 or the 50mm f1.8. Two different types of lens (zoom and prime) but completely different in price range. What lens would you recommend for low-light for under $800?
Great Video! I am torn between the Video features and Focus of the 70D and the Picture quality FULL Frame and price of the 6D. I have been using a T1i for years now and its time to take the step up. I have in my arsenal the Canon EF-L 24-105 , The Canon FishEye 15mm, a 580exii flash and a 270exii flash (for slave or travel). I Jumped to soon for the video on the t1i from my xSi. I take mostly portrait ATM of my family do you recommend the Full Frame 6D or the all around 70D +Video for me
Very informative video which has prompted me to get a 70D. Is there a video on what lenses you recommend for crop sensors be that wide, walk around and zoom if someone wanted to invest the savings made into better glass. Perhaps with the 70D in mind. Thanks Again
I have a 60D currently and I am in love with that focusing system. Been wanting to have 2 camera bodies and being that the 7d mk II is coming out, I would like to get the 70D and then add the 7D MK II when it comes out, The glass I need will be used for both photography and film. Like tokina 11-16 2.8, sigma 18-35 1.8, plus considered getting the sigma 50-150 2.8 which puts me at a similar range that a 70-200 would be on a full frame though of course you got to add crop factor to the aperture as well.. the 50-150 has a decent resell value, has Optical Stabilization and is under $1000. My buddy gets amazing portrait results with that lens on his 7D. So considering most of the glass will be APS-C glass, I will stay crop for 2 more years. If I get more wedding gigs then I will invest in a 6D and Tamron 24-70 2.8 and a 85mm 1.8 to start. What do you think?
Brian Michael Sounds like a good plan! The 50-150 f2.8 is a great lens. I would definitely pick that or a 70-200 over the 85mm f1.8 for general wedding use; most weddings really require the flexibility of a zoom... you rarely have the time to carefully plan compositions around a prime. There's more info in my photography buying guide (links in the description).
I bought your buying guide when you first put it out, if I changed computers would I be able to re download it? Oh def I agree, next lens im buying is the 50-150 2.8 before any other. I currently own the Sigma 17-50 2.8 which has been good to me but I really want a decent telephoto zoom. I do have the fantastic plastic 50 1.8, I will want the 50mm 1.4 eventually and an 85mm 1.8 The way Im buying the lenses is gearing towards eventually going full frame. After I buy the APS-C glass I need for the jobs I work on. I will have some solid Primes and will buy the Tamron 24-70 right before I buy a full frame. This way there will already be a decent start of full frame glass in my bag. Plus there is the option to buy the full frame with the 24-105 kit L lens so I'd have atleast some telephoto with the full frame before upgrading to a beautiful 70-200 2.8
Thanks Tony, very helpful video. What cameras did you use to film this review? Would the 70D be a good choice as either the master or second for small studio work like this?
Very nice. Thanks a lot for the amount of work you put into this. I am seriously considering the 70D (right now I have a T3i/600D with some nice lenses, but I hate the autofocus and do lots of video), and want to give one important hint: Prices will be dropping until mid december (at least here in Germany) if the prices of past camera releases are any indication. You can already see a downward spiral, and I am guessing the 70D will end up at 70% of the original price before Christmas. :) Yay!
Wow! Happened upon this and this is an amazing review. I had already bought the 70d (already own the 5d Mkiii). If I had seen this before, I would not have procrastinated on getting the 70d. Thanks Tony, subscribed to you now.

I agree about starting with the T3. That's what I did, and I just upgraded to the 70D after spending almost 3.5 years with the T3.

I guess I don't know exactly, but yeah, the 6D does fine using the center AF point. However, the 70D's crop sensor will still win for BiF.
I totally agree! I wish camera manufacturers would include articulating displays on their higher-end cameras.
In theory, if you had proper focus pulling equipment and enough practice, you could do it manually (and it would be even more accurate). The focus pulling gear would probably be as expensive as the upgrade to a 70D, however.

Just bought the 70D--so far, I love it. Upgraded from my T5i.
Marie Graichen I upgraded from T5i to 70D as well.
Really useful video. It's so rare to find a genuine review with so many worthwhile recommendations with sensible justifications. Typically you find someone pushing one device over another no matter what the job need.

Yes, I always use back button AF when photographing birds, especially.
best review out there, for those like me undecided between several cameras.

AMAZING REVIEW!!!! Very nice the why you break up the pros and cons of each camera. Pointing what is the best use for each camera also rocks.
Thanks! The links are buried in the description.
I sure do.
This review has sold me on my next Canon. The 70D will become my go to camera and my 60D will stay for backup.
MicroWare mentioned this, but the T4i is very similar to the T3i and T5i, especially as far as image quality is concerned.
Have you ever reviewed the Canon t3i? If not I sure would like to see one cause your reviews are so thorough and easy to understand. Good job man!
Tony, you and Chelsy are the best! I love you guys! Thanks for all these great videos you put out.
I'd like to share this:
I've just got a 70D, and I'm amazed with the 7fps and the ISO performance (coming from a T2i).
Deb Cole
Coach Deb Cole Thanks, and you're welcome!
just bought your book on Amazon Kindle.

Your review is the most detailed i've seen so far...kudos!
This is the ideal video I was looking for! I was considering buying this camera but wanted one suitable for a bunch of uses and your review has covered all bases and I know it's suitable for my means. Thank you 👍
Very thorough!! I really appreciate your reviews. You're almost single-handedly helping me make a difficult purchase decision.
I had an easier time getting my Eye-Fi configured than the 70D WiFi, but the Eye-Fi is only good for transferring pictures (though I like the Eye-Fi mobile app better). It doesn't allow remote triggering or live viewing through the camera.
I appreciate all your hard work Tony. Subbed
+Jamie Pene-Gestro Thanks!
+Tony Northrup what is the max video length for the t51?And does it have mic controls?
+LetArtsLive 30 minutes
Nice Thanks
Trenton Bennett
Hi, Paul. This is the type of topic that I cover in my Photography Buying Guide (available using the third link in the description). There's no one right answer, but the 18-135 is more versatile.
Hi Tony
Nice review, thank you ... just a little hint ... a lot of devices, printers, cameras and others hate channel 1 on the wireless routers... change your wireless channels from Auto to manual 11 which is safest channel in wireless band, then try to connect your cameras to your wireless (often manual WiFi channels are accessible in Advanced part of your router settings)
Fantastic review Tony. It has helped me to finally decide to purchase the 70D.
Over the 550D, yes, it would be a bit better.
loved this review....and you also have a very good prescence and tone of voice to make this kind of videos - KEEP IT UP! and thanks
Nathaly Calle Thanks!
Thank you.
Thanks Tony, your content is always the most detailed and valuable.
1.7D
2.5D MK2
3.70D
Of course all are used but looking at these options unless you have another option. I appreciate all your work and any help you can give me.
Thank you for your time!
Tony you are a photography GOD..I love your videos and the only one's I trust, keep up the good work buddy.
Many thanks
Nige-uk
PIXYBASHER Thanks!!
Great review Tony. Thanks for the time you put into these. They are extremely helpful.
Wow...Best reviewer I've ever come across..Cheers and Happy New Year from NYC !! Was just about to go to BH Photo and now I'm going to make some different decisions. Thank you.
Tony, thank you for this video. Keep up the good work. Your videos are very educational.
If you have specific questions about the capabilities, feel free to ask.
amazing...I have this camera and enjoying it but need a mentor...
absolutely the best review out there on the 70d, thanks!
Absolutely great video!! I used to own the T3i and on Tuesday will be picking up a 70D (used) for a very good price! Thanks again for the help with this journey.
did you feel the upgrade? I also have a t3i and I just bought a 70d and it's on its way... and I'm afraid that I won't feel the change.
Savior666 thank you very much!!
I upgraded from T5i to 70D myself and like it.
I bought it used from eBay with the Canon 18-135mm STM lens for $830.
I don't understand the question.
Tony,
IMHO, you can put a surgeon’s scalpel in the hands of a child and just have a bleeding patient.
This is an amazing review , the best and more useful , thanks a lot now I know why I'll buy this camera
Alejandro Caliz Zamarripa Thanks, and enjoy!
Videos and family pics here 70d sold!thank you for such great reviews you sold me this camera even though is double the price of a nikon d5200.
I do have the fantastic plastic 50 1.8, I will want the 50mm 1.4 eventually and an 85mm 1.8
The way Im buying the lenses is gearing towards eventually going full frame.
Any ideas when the 7D mk 2 is coming out? I was about to get a 70D, but depending on release date of the new 7D, I may wait for that instead :)
They will be announcing the release of the 7D mk ii in September at photokina
Oh... so you could be quite a while off yet?
Great review, just bought a 70D for $729.99 refurbished. Looking forward to it. will use for video primarily.
Where did you get a refurbished one?
THE6FACEGOD through Canon on their website. Comes with. One year warranty.
