    Crab grass is terrible, but I battle bermuda grass, which grows on rhizomes, nasty cords that have to be pulled up by the roots. Not easy when you’re trying 77 with arthritis in the lower back. Fortunately the garden looks good, and I’m gradually filling in the beds with beautiful plants. Sorry for whining.

      to kathryn from another katherine: I feel your pain... I am 75 and have had terrible back pain for the last 10 years, but I can't imagine not working in the garden - it's what keeps me going... drink lots of water and take frequent breaks... all the best to you and your garden... p.s. we have reached the age where we can whine if we want to...

    Life happens to us ALL. .. new beds are ALWAYS a bit wicked. Might want to attempt more cardboard down between/around plants and then mulch on top of it. May help you more than you think. I use cardboard in my vegetable gardens every year, and I straw on top of it. It is my LIFE SAVER in the Iowa heat of summer and helps keep the moister in as well.
    Good luck ... the struggles are REAL ... 🎉

    Your garden is looking awesome. It will be fun to see it mature and explode in blooms and color. I don't know why, but, crab grass is a real problem this year for many of us gardeners. I have fought it worse this year, in the old beds and the new ones... worse than in the past. Even in mulched beds that I put cardboard down under the mulch last year I'm having trouble with grass. It has been a real issue this year for some reason. Love your videos.

    I feel for you on the newly planted plants, lack of mulch plus other conditions, and resulting weeds! I’ve had that happen before, too. I try pretty hard to mulch at least around the base of all new plantings right away… especially if they are in sunny beds where the weeds are especially aggressive! I can fill in the rest of the spots later, but the weeds do pop up right where I’m watering the new plants, around the crowns, without that ring of mulch!

    I’ve used Preen with success for many years, even around hydrangeas (I guess what they don’t know can’t hurt them!) I like your suffering pile of crabgrass and weeds but no concerns of having a dead patch of lawn when you remove them? Or of possibly getting crabgrass started in the lawn by piling it there?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The pile was only there for a few days (and has already been removed) and unless there are mature seeds on the crabgrass (which there wasn't), there's no concerns of more popping up.

And, because Matthew has such a large expanse of lawn, how long can you mow for on a charge? Thank you. I look forward to your response. Thanks, Matthew. (PS Honestly, I don't mind crabgrass as much as I mind other weeds. It's fairly easy to pull)

    Those weeds do deserve to suffer! I have been in your position when mulch gets delayed and it is scary how fast those weeds emerge and spread. Thanks for great breakdown though of the timeline of how this happened. I always appreciate your education mindset around the garden. Those lawnmower robots have been on my radar for quite a while. I saw them in use throughout the UK, including public garden spaces and they are so quiet and not intrusive at all. I am going to follow your review and might have to try it. Thanks for a great video, and I should have led with: Your front garden looks spectacular!!!!!❤

    Your front yard garden is looking great! You might look into a 'Grandpa's Weed Puller' for pulling out that crabgrass. It's cheap, and does a good job of getting most of the roots. I actually have the Fiskar's 4 Claw Standup weeder that releases the clump of weeds without any bending...saves time and my old back...!!! By the way, your roses are looking especially beautiful!

  • @Blake.Cooper

    Thanks for letting me know about Preen!!! AHHH, I used it in my bed with hydrangeas!! Won't do that again!! Luckily, I didn't put the Preen directly under the hydrangeas which are in the back of the bed, but focused it mainly on the border.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Someone else in a comment said they have used it around their hydrangeas without ill effects, but I've never risked it. There is a natural preen product that's made with corn gluten meal you could try. I've not tried that product yet, but I've looked into it because corn gluten meal has been shown effective in preventing weed germination.

    lol... I never thought to make my crabgrass suffer!.. I love this idea - "that'll teach you and your little seeds, too"... my number one rule for the garden in the last few years = do not pull weeds unless mulch will go down within a day of the pulling - this has made me a lot less work over time... question re Tony: what's the pay grade to hire him?.. we have 22 acres of which 5-6 are lawn/weeds - my husband could really use a break...

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The pricing is all different depending on the number of acres it will cut because of battery capacity and internal mapping storage. 2.5 acres is their largest bot right now. I'm impressed with it right now, and if it can get the more detailed cutting areas around the home and leave the field open for cutting with the larger mower, it will still save an enormous amount of time. I think is well worth the time savings in my case. You can find more details about the mower before my review video in the meantime here: thegardencalls.com/mammotiontech

    Question About Tony: How well does he handle inclines/hills (cutting quality as well as battery performance)? In general do you feel the need to "touch up" after him, or does he do a pretty thorough job at cutting consistently?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi Sally, I answered a few of these items in another question in the comments and will address them more in my video. It can handle an incline up to 38 degrees because it has all wheel drive. The cut quality is what I would consider good and consistent and I've not had to touch up after him - although you would still have to do any string trimming in areas that may need it. It's best for maintaining a certain height. I wouldn't recommend setting him out to cut down 12" high grass, but my initial cuts were for grass that had been growing a couple weeks and it knocked the grass down quite well. The second cut just improved even more after it had evened everything out and it's been consistent ever since.

  • @janetvorenkamp3655
    @janetvorenkamp3655 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Really appreciate your honesty in this video. It's an ambitious garden so not getting mulch down is understandable. It is critical to controlling weeds and I'm sure you'll get there. Still amazing how well the new garden has grown in. Hope we get to see the new rose wall soon. Would love to see how they are doing. I know several estates who use the Husqvarna robot mower and love it so expect it to serve you well. Good idea!

    For Tony, how long can it run before it needs to recharge? Where do you store it? How does it do on steep/uneven terrain? Can you do multiple zones?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Great questions! I'll go into more details in my video. Briefly, run time is a bit complicated depending on which settings you choose to utilize in your cut and which model you pick for battery capacity. For example, how much overlap between cutting rows (there is some neat customization there), how you choose to turn around (zero turn or multi-point turn), terrain incline, etc. could minorly impact cutting duration. For my version, which is the largest they offer, I've found that it will cut just over 2 hours, before it returns to recharge (even on the slope in front of the barn to the house). Then it takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes or so to recharge to 80%, then it continues the job until it's finished. Mine is stored outside with its charging dock. The Luba 2 has all wheel drive and shocks and can climb a 38% slope, which is pretty steep. Multiple areas/zones can be mapped until you reach the maximum acreage for your model.

    Oh my gosh I feel your pain! Our yard grass has been full of crab grass, nuttsedge and violets. We’ve been trying to eradicate it with professional help but in the past 3 years of all my gardening in new beds, the crapgrass and others has been a nightmare. It keeps popping up in decorative riverbed rocks which has lion head Japanese maples in so it can’t be sprayed, ugh 😩 talk about back pain from constantly pulling weeds. I’ve had to hire help cuz I physically couldn’t keep pulling so many weeds daily. Pros and cons to hired help is sometimes they do good, everything done quickly but costly and sometimes they pull out perennials while throwing mulch right on top of the weeds. Lol gardening certainly has some wild roller coaster roads to travel through. 😊

    Everything is looking good. I don'y envy your task of weeding - my least favorite garden chore. I try to go around every morning so the weeds don't get ahead of me. It sounds like you have a handle on it now.

    Gosh, Matthew, Tony looks great! How long does it take to. Barge? How long does he cut in one session? And your gardens look great even with all the weeds and crabgrass! Way to go!

    Oh my, I love that you wanted the crab grass to suffer, I feel the same way. Im over weeds creeping charlie has taken my front yard over the last few years. Anyone know of a natural way to irradicate creeping charlie?

      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You could try something like Bonide Dead Weed Brew. It's organic and acid based. It's non-selective, so anything you spray with it could be injured and because creeping charlie is so pervasive it may take several rounds to beat it down. It's going to be a difficult one to control naturally, for sure.

    The bot could be great. How is the battery life? Does it have a docking station near by or does it travel from your shed? Cost? What does the maintenance look like?

    Tony! I'm looking forward to a video. Super cool time saver! How do you set up his mowing zones/don't mow zones? Similar to a robot vacuum?Where'd you get that delicious looking mulch from? Thanks!

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It is very similar to a robot vacuum, so if you have experience with one of those the concepts transfer really well to the mower application. I got this mulch from Dalton's Mulch.

      Yes, but the florets themselves should have started to dry slightly (become “papery”) on the plant for best results.

    Can you show an up close shot or two of crab grass, I fight what I call strangle weed Im not sure if they are the same. Im also not sure exactly what Burmuda grass looks like. They may all be different name for the same irritating weed I'm really not sure.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It would be best if you google pictures of it so you can see comparisons. Crab grass and bermuda grass are not the same. Crab grass has a lime color, has a prostrate growth habit, and roots in at nodes along the stem making it more difficult to pull. It grows very quickly given the right conditions and can easily crowd out other grasses because of its growth habits. It also reseeds rather rapidly. Because of its growth habit and color, it sticks out very visibly in a maintained lawn or the flower bed. Bermuda grass is actually a desirable grass in some climates because of its heat and drought tolerance and some people have entirely bermuda grass lawns, but it can also spread rather quickly by rhizomes. Bermuda is a warm season grass (sensitive to cold), and we do not tend to have issues with it here in Ohio.

    That was a lot of work getting the crab grass out. We also have a plague of crabgrass -- I swear the stuff doubles in size overnight. We have had a couple of big thunderstorms recently and the weeds are loving it! A robot lawnmower is on my list -- I will be interested in seeing how you like Tony.
