- A key to a thriving garden is always having fresh plants available which is why I have some seedlings going just about year round. In the summer time I am mostly thinking of replacing spent plants or succession sowing but there are also some late bloomers that I haven't started up until now.

this year, GA is horrible. we clocked 100 this week multiple times. can't even work outside in the evenings, as it's too hot AND the humidity is collapsing.
I have started to water at night to help my seriously struggling baby plants in this heat. . . 38°C close to 100F. Too hot for Malakwa BC. I am a bit jealous of folks who have a longer growing season than our 100 days.
Instead of starting new tomatoes, I like to clone what I prune off.
That's a great move as well, I forgot to mention that option!

Hello from northwest Turkiye. Today i sowed cherry tomatoes, cherry pepper, cucumber and okra while thinking it's too late in the season. I am very happy to see that i'm not the only one starting new plants in July! Good luck! 😄
Some years are wild cards and you just have to experiment!
Super Sweet 100’s grow like a beast in my Western Colorado garden and keep producing and flowering even when we get above a 100 degrees.

Got tons this year, started from seed in Feb. I can't give them away fast enough, they're so prolific. I'm in Atlanta area and use shade cloth.

I remember back in the late '70's early '80's, when I was just starting out on my own, a local grocery store would give a bunch of parsley away for free. I loved it! One bunch was all I needed.
A little parsley goes a long way for sure

I just started okra! I’ve also got zinnia, cosmos, marigolds, basil, parsley, dill, fennel, swish chard, a bunch of summer squash, zukes and cukes starts about ready to plant. I also planted up some fall specific zinnia and Swiss chard for fall decoration. I’ve got all my brassicas sorted and ready for fall seed starting in the next few weeks! Those tomatoes! Totally jealous.. ❤

I first heard about Cherokee Carbon tomatoes from you. Lucked out at my local garden center and got the second to last plant. Was chatting to another tomato gardener about it and he grabbed the last one. I then got nervous if I’d given bad advice. Nope! My Cherokee Carbon plant is gorgeous, covered with large tomatoes. Thank you!

@@jacquesinthegarden I ate my first Berkley Tie Dye last night. So good! Picked some of the Cherokee Carbons early so the critters don't get them. Something (rabbits or chipmunks) ate some black cherry and sungolds.
The LIHI Basil from Johnny’s is the highest quality basil I’ve ever grown. I can’t recommend it enough.

Zone 5b My sungold is over 6' tall with 7 growing heads, no disease at all. just got my first ripe fruit today.
That is amazing! For some reason my sungold always gets disease first!

I just started another round of green beans and started cabbage and cauliflower seeds indoors for fall. I had 3 volunteer tomatoes grow up in my garlic bed. I left them to grow and have small tomatoes already.
I love your seed starting videos. Yesterday I started cukes, toms, basil, and brassicas. I direct sowed squash and beans. Hoping to have a nice fall garden here on the high plains.
I’m in NE FL. I sowed tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, summer squash, winter squash, melons and a bunch of flowers on the 1st. For the peppers, they may or may not fruit a lot this year but my very best and by far earliest producers this year were overwintered plants so that’s my main goal for those.
I’m in SE Texas. I get it. I planted my peppers in grow bags and moved them into shade last week and fertilized. They are putting on blooms like crazy and look beautiful. Mine were almost dead in the full sun. They came back flourishing within a week.
I also start some late peppers with the goal of overwintering!
Dude why is Okra so beautiful though? I am literally going to grow it as an ornamental also next year. The flower is breathtaking
I totally agree! That’s why I grow okra! I’m in Maine so it’s not quite warm enough to get okra to mass produce, but I love the flowers that I do get!
It is a stunner and related to roselle aka hibiscus if you want ornamentals that can be made into tasty jicama tea!

My daughter in law grows them as an ornamental and allows the pods to dry on the plants. Beautiful!
Just cleared my garlic beds, going to plant more bush beans, squash, radish. My sunflowers are being eaten alive by cucumber beetles! I am not growing cucumbers. I believe they spread the rust fungus. When I find them my plants become covered in rust. Last year was horrific with rain. Miss seeing your beautiful pups in the video! Had to put my cane corso/rottie down , due to cancer at 9 years old.Seeing your beautiful dogs brings me joy! Thanks for your encouragement!

I grew the center cut squash this year; highly recommend! It stayed vine borer resistant the longest 🙌
The borer finally killed it though.

Those midnight roma look super cool! Centercut is technically a butternut which is apparently more resistant to SVB!
Butternut Rugosa Violina was unfazed by SVB from Baker Creek.
I lived in Bulgaria for two years. Just hearing the word чубрица (chubritsa) made my morning.
Our heat this year has been so bad on my cilantro. We went straight from winter cold and frosts into crazy heat, low-mid 90s every day and my cilantro never stood a chance, as soon as it got warm enough for it to grow it became too hot and it immediately bolted. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get much before it bolted so I planted tons of plants but I never had the chance to get any at all. Gonna have to hope for a good fall harvest I guess.
The wild spring weather shifts can be really hard for establishing these seedlings. It is sometimes necessary to just keep seeding until you find your window
You can try culantro. It's a bit stronger than cilantro but can deal with the heat as long as it's partially shaded. Also, bolted cilantro is great for bringing predators to the garden that help with a lot of pests. I definitely have more ladybugs this year after letting all my cilantro bolt.

I’m in the Bay Area of CA and just started some radishes and carrots this week, as well as spinach and cilantro in some more shady spots. My cilantro hasn’t popped up yet so I might try again with that crunching tip! Also I’ve been really looking forward to another spring/summer flower tour! Hoping that’s still in the works!

this heat wave this week has me wilting but most of my garden thriving! just started some more peppers, dill, cilantro and tomatillos!
I planted my first luffa yesterday, it was a good 4th because i was able to garden a lot! Sunflowers, sone chaos seeding, an herb bed, peas, beans, cantaloupe and potatoes! Ive had my first black cherry tomato at this point too, and have two pickle bush cucumbers starting to flower already. And a yellow watermelon as well as yellow pear tomato plant. I'm so excited. I want to grow some of those super tiny tomatoes as well, but I have to wait.

Also for melon seeds, you don't want to disturb the roots so you want the bigger 4-cell to help you with not disturbing the taproot when transplanting. I used the 4-cells for my cucumber and melons and they transitioned quite well into the raised bed without issues.
Jacques, I really appreciate your videos immensely even tho i don’t grow much (garlic, onions, some annuals and some perennials). You are a wealth of knowledge and I am encouraged by your simple, straightforward information to be bold and try some new things next year in my central KY garden. My favorite part of the video is where you say it’s okay to grow some plants/flowers just because you like them. ♥️

It’s been triple digits here in Napa, Ca right now for about a week.I am doing everything I can just to keep my plants alive, but its supposed to be cooling back down to the upper 80’s in just a few days. I’m going to take advantage of the intense sun to sprout an Armenian melon, Roma tomatoes, several different types of bush beans, habanadas, and probably some okra, now that you mention it! Love the channel and look forward to each video!

Getting French marigolds… trying Armenian cucumbers this year. Growing sun sugar tomatoes, so good! Need to get my sunflowers in. Love how you mix veggies, herbs and flowers together.
I paused the video midway thru and went to get my seedboxes 😅. My estimated first frost date is Oct 12th, but I think can retry cucamelons, there is always time for more scallions, and I'm using flowers to try & fill in the gaps in my beds where things didn't germinate or fell victim to some very pesky robins
Worst case scenario you get some harvest but not ALL of it!

I have never done companion planting marigolds with my tomatoes before this year, and OMG what a difference it has made. My tomatoes that don't have any marigolds nearby have had so many hornworms chomping away, but the ones with marigolds are untouched! Fingers crossed these San Marzanos turn out good 🤞

I was super interested in the cherry falls tomato and grew them last year as our neighbor had grew them in hanging baskets the year before and let me tell you they were insanely productive. We grew them off the edges of our 30 inch raised beds, they were so pretty cascading over the edges of the bed just absolutely covered in pink large cherry tomatoes.
That is amazing, maybe I will place it on a corner as well!

I did succession planting of my tomatoes for the first time ever this year. All started from seed. I have about 8 plants ready to go into containers this weekend. You have inspired me to plant a few more cherry tomatoes as well!!! I also just started my cucumbers on July 1st and they have all germinated! I will be starting more seeds of those very soon. After this video I am inspired to go and direct seed a few more sunflowers for my garden because they are just gorgeous and do really well here. Thank you for this video Jacques!

Getting ready to plant more herbs, too. Found out why my CA Poppies never came up. The seeds weren't poppies. They came up as gilia. Glad it wasn't just my crappy gardening skills.

Sweet 100's - you will not regret that choice. At least, I hope not (🤔) - They are SO prolific with a fabulous flavor; a staple in my garden. Even with pruning, so many fruit. SO - I freeze what I can't eat fresh in gallon freezer bags - and then pull them out as I want/need to roast with garlic and thyme and serve over angel hair pasta. When it's Janaury and 20 below, I have a wonderful taste of summer. I literally just ordered the Garleek seeds. You turned me on to Row 7 a year or two back with the center cut squash which has been amazing!!
For parsley, I use a useful speed hack where I sow the seeds in moist starting mix in the 6 cells and then put the six cell in a ziplock bag and then freeze the six cell in the freezer for one day. You can even do 2 days. Then I bring out and put on the 1020 tray over a heating mat. The cold to hot seems to break the seed shell and I get 100% germination in less than a week. I got this off of the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange sowing instructions for parsley. Haven't had any issues germinating parsley since.
I don't really trust Johnny's anymore, not after planting "Jupiter bell peppers" that turned out to be eggplant. If you're selling seeds you need to know what the hell they are. I thought they were the wierdest looking pepper leaves I've ever seen, and now I know why.
Oh I had not heard that one. All seed companies do get occasional slip ups. Part of the human element like mislabeling a bag!
I grew orange hat tomatoes and the bush might be a foot tall when staked, but they are producing like crazy!

Im in zone 6b. Tonight I'll be starting 2 types of fast growing sunflowers, zinnias, bachelor buttons, calendula, fast growing sauce tomatoes called sunrise sauce, some fast growing tomatoes that can handle cooler weather to go in my green house until the end of fall & summer squash. Extreme heat and humidity here coastal SC sea Island. Zone 9a. So hot that everything stopped blooming. Keeping the plants healthy so they will produce eventually

I totally agree with tomato planting now or even later. Last year in August, I planted 2 San Marzano. To my surprise, they lived through the past winter, spring and now summer. These two indeterminate tomatoes gave a very early start of home-grown maters for salads. The two are still prolific given their age. I’m so amazed and inspired to always experiment.
Absolutely! It is always worth trying things even if everyone says its pointless, you never know!
I just started some seeds on the 4th of July! In seed trays I started blue lake 274 bush beans, royal carpet alyssum, and pastel carpet alyssum. Then I direct sowed bush spicy globe basil in a 12 inch pot and a dwarf incredible sunflower in a deep 5 gallon grow bag. The other day I also picked up a Ichiban eggplant and a Heatmaster tomato from the nursery that I planted in my Epic 5 Gallon Grow Bags 🤙
Never head of the spicy globe basil...may have to give that a try!

I'm here in north county San Diego, I have about 10 Cherry Falls tomato plants loaded with fruit but covered in powdery mildew :( starting zucchini, bunching onions, cantaloupe, cucumbers and more tithonia to replace those that were ravaged by voles! wish me luck in my rodent battle🐭
Try a red okra. The flavor is richer & is also great for pickling
I had a red okra that was so spiny I had to rip it out before we all got itchy arms haha. Will try again!
Depending on the soil, I have had Supersweet 100s taste like tomato candy! They were that sweet!
I LOVE seed starting videos… especially when you and Kevin are together.
We can grow cucumbers in July in Texas with afternoon shade or shade cloth.
Also I grew Confetti Cilantro that looks like the kind you have. It’s unique but good so will grow it again.
Instead of putting my beds to sleep this fall I’m going to grow collards for my compost. I personally don’t like to eat them but they will provide a lot of organic matter.
Have you tried the Armenia cucumbers? I've heard of people in Arizona growing them just fine!
@@jacquesinthegarden I’ve grown Armenian cucumbers in texas although I planted in spring. I have not tried planting them in July before. I bet they would do well.
I direct seeded some cucumbers a few days ago I put my second carrots as well. I'll start soon cauliflowers and broccoli. And I've already harvested my chubritsa 😉
I planted leeks late in the season last year and found that they wintered over and grew quickly in the spring. Nice surprise so I will try it again this year. I’m zone 5 Wisconsin so it might depend on how cold the winter is
NW Ohio here. This is the first time I've also grown super sweet 100s. They are nearly twice the size of the other tomato plants. Almost 6 feet high and loaded with fruit. Looking forward to harvest!

I only have support for 2 indeterminate tomato plants so i LOVE finding dwarf varieties. Cherry falls is a dink! But it produces and it is perfect. Ill try to remember to succession plants thosenext year.
Zone 7 here - Oct 15 first frost. I have to start my fall garden seeds this week. Broccoli, cabbage, and I'm going to do some more summer seeds like tomatillo and african marigolds for Day of the Dead. I still have 100 days so I have some time for summer plants. I should try to plant some flowers too. Thanks for the suggestions!

LOVE watching these videos. I just seeded some Spacemaster 80 Cukes. My first time growing them, so I’m so excited to see how they do. I also just planted another round of Cucamelon seeds (the first round either didn’t germinate or the birds ate the sprouts 😢). And I planted two Armenian Cucumbers. It’s just been a week and they already seem like they’re going to be vigorous! I’m in Florida, so I’m excited to see how they do in our hot, humid weather

Zone 6b Ohio, starting new zucchini plants (stupid squash bugs!) and fall brassica plants as well. Our weird early June heat wave over 90+ for a week stunted things in the garden this year.
Hi. I am all the way over the pond in Sydney Australia. I am starting spinach, lettuce, broccoli and collards....many more later this month in preparation for spring.

9:37 oddly one of my baby leaf lettuce with a curly leaf is in full sun on my patio during 100 degree weather and so far no sign of bolting or dying. I am totally keeping that one to go to seed, as it clearly is handling the heat amazingly.
I started my fall crops a few days ago. Not too much - 4 different broccoli and white, cheddar and purple cauliflower. You sold me on the purple broccoli but this spring only gave me leaves. Still going strong at this point. Since I’m growing them under insect netting critters are minimal. The leaves taste amazing! I just started a few Costata Romanesco to take up residence where the cauliflower used to be under the netting. I think you’ll love them. I’m growing super sweet 100 for the first time this year. One thing they all did was skyrocket to about 4-5 feet when they were still pretty young and skinny. (this was not due to lack of light) I’m also growing hibiscus for tea and cannellini beans.
The leaves are super delicious and great in stir fries! Sounds like the super sweets will be an interesting one to work with.
I'm inspired to try more flowers. I wish Johnny added more info and photos. I love that there is so much on the Botanical packets, having to open up my packets and find baggies for the remaining seeds to get to the details inside is bit of hassle tho.

Totally! Carbon is very consistent in my garden.
Just direct seeded alyssum among my tomatoes. Now that I harvested my garlic I have an open bed for zucchini and beans! It was my first year trying onions and they didn’t do very well so I think I’m going to add some Apricotta Cosmos to fill in the gaps. I also plan to start some more cucumbers, lemon basil, and scallions. Great video! May watch a second time tomorrow morning when I start those seeds!!
That's awesome to hear! It's always fun to try new things and cycle out plants as much as possible. It feels like you really are getting it when you have plants ready to take up the empty spaces!
I remember when I was about 24 I did half acres of tomatoes as my firdt garden , I didn't realize that tomatoes are tough to grow in florida ( there are tomato farms all around me) and got like 9 tomatoes from 150 plants lol, they were all like 6 foot tall , but didn't make any fruit and all died from blight eventually, but that same year I did like 6 rows of okra and had soo much okra I could jave mulched my yard with it
Was an expensive experiment that I never did again lol
My understanding is that In Florida fall is the true tomato season which is weird to think about!
I'm growing the sSweet Garleek from Row 7 too. I've sent some to other YT friends and we're doing a little collaboration. I also got really excited when I saw these. While on there site the Badger Flame beets intrigued me, so I had to try them...sadly they have had a rough go being dug up twice by the squirrels. I do have about 8 that survived to try.

I've tried the badger beet and it was quite nice! The centercut squash is always delicious from them, very excited for the garleek!
Whey for the mildew according to growing out the box
I started speggheti squash, Mexican sunflower for hummers, more zucchini, going to start more carrots and parsnips that grow well in poly tunnel in Northern Ohio during winter along with certain greens like collards and can eat broccoli leaves in soups because they stay pristine in winter. Letting a lot of my first plantings go to seed in poly tunnel for next year and see if they reseed at some point.
My Mexican sunflowers just started blooming which is very exciting.
Really shocked to hear you've never grown Super Sweet 100s. I like them as much as I like the Sungolds, but the SS100 does a hair better for me. I'm going to have a few thousand of each by the time the season ends here in Ct, and I'll eat the majority of them myself. They're like little delicious balls of sweet sweet bliss.

I love harvesting and frying up a batch of okra every day. I usually go with the clemson spineless as well. I wanted to plant these Louisiana Green Velvet seed I have but never got to it. We'll see, maybe I can get them in the ground soon.

Little gem marigold plants grow about 1.5-2 ft tall in PNW zone 8. The flowers are about dime size. The petals are zesty and look and taste great in salads etc. The foliage is lacy and fills out nicely. The seeds are super easy to harvest. This plant is a must every year in my garden.

Here in central PA I am going to be starting zucchini and additional succession plantings of cilantro, dill, nasturtium, lettuce, and soon it will be time for fall brassicas and beets. I hope I haven’t missed the window for Brussels sprouts!
I think I am skipping brussels this year, almost never worth the effort where I am
I live in the south zone 8b and sulphur cosmos are the most heat tolerant and less prone to falling over in storms and I always direct seed all my cosmos and zinnias. The birds always sabotage my direct seeded sunflowers so I transfer them.
I like growing mustard for seed and to combat root knot nematodes!

We are having a streak of 110 degree days, so I'm not starting anything! But, that said, I have volunteer cosmos, zinnias, and CA poppies starting in my flower garden. I'm amazed that the CA poppies are starting in the heat. I also have some CA poppies that have been growing since February and are still blossoming! Most of them were done over a week ago. It's an interesting year. I want to try the arugula and the chard/spinach that you showed. I was going to start lettuce, but I think I'll wait until the 110s are safely behind us because I don't have enough space in the shade - unless I grow them in and amongst the sunflowers
Interesting to hear that the poppies are doing well now! Usually they fade by now but I also have a few still blooming
I think I'll direct sow more leeks, fennel and spinach in August. Gonna over winter the tomatoes and eggplant, , but I may start some different varieties indoor then too.
Instead of succession sowing with seeds, you can also use suckers you let get long enough.
Doesn't help if there's disease in the plant, obviously, but if you normally remove most of them, it's a good way to turn a garden chore into a way to learn new propagation skills.
Losing a crop is why I'm debating thinning my watermelons in grow bags and vertical stakes. I can't bring myself to go past two in each bag if they survived. Balcony stuggle is real.

I'm in zone 7a in NC, and I just popped some jing okra, burgundy beans, bushing cucumbers (spacesaver I think?), and and sugar baby varieties of watermelon and pumpkin!

I might be misremembering but the first drop was definitely pricier. He is a fantastic person with a great mission I should have mentioned more about that!

I bought two packages from Sunflower Steve. Germination was awesome. Then one night the snails showed up and totally destroyed all of my sunflower seedlings and a lot of my Petunias. The snails have been taken care of and I am starting more Sunflowers.
PS…they were about $15/pkt.
15$ a packet is for sure more reasonable for a small operation. Hopefully the snails leave a few!
I so appreciate the cilantro crunch technique. I've been using it all season and now cilantro germinates easily.Thank you for the reminder to start another wave. Shout out for dwarf tomatoes for fall tomatoes. Planting first of two waves today. While not classic sauce varieties, they make ffor great roasted salsa which I always want in September and October. We just got 2.5 days of rain while still in the 80s and the tomatoes are living their best lives. Most of them growing in partial shade as an experiment. Honestly, they are a part-time job, but I love it. Can I be a farmer for bespoke, emotionally well-adjusted tomatoes and dahlias?

I am growing the cherry falls tomato. It can actually get pretty big. I have them in 10 gallons. I do have one in a 1 gallon for something cute on a table next to a chair, but it needs lots of water. See how it goes. You can up-pot it.

I’m starting another okra. My plant looked miniature and just had an okra on there that was almost as big as the plant 😂
I love your garden. It always looks beautiful with color. I’m growing the marigolds with the small flowers you had. No flowers yet, plus regular marigolds and calendula officinalis as always. My first cosmos bright lights showed up today. Weird Chicago weather.

Oh interesting! I wonder if it just grows to the container size. I am growing some Romanesco right now and it is coming out super tasty.
@@jacquesinthegarden oops, I just saw that I have them in five gallon bags. I also grow the patio yellow and that one seems even bigger and the picture shows it in a bowl. They both produce lots of tomatoes.Maybe they do grow to the size of the container.
