The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach E Rally Is The Modern-Day... Focus RS?

- It’s time to drive some Mach Es in the mud! Today Alex and Travis are in Washington state with the Mustang Mach E Rally, which is kind-of/sort-of the off road Mustang, but think Pikes Peak, not Moab. Power comes from the same 91 kWh battery as always, but 2024 brings a new rear motor that’s more efficient and more powerful. You’ll get 480 HP, 700 lb-ft and a brisk 3.3 second 0-60 run. The real question however is: those wheels… hit em or quit em?

I LOVE the new wheels, definitely sends a clear Rally message. Those tires are AMAZING. Have them on my wife’s Infinity QX60, best snow tires I have ever used and they are perfect for rain and hot summers too. A true ALL season tire. I would have made those rally lights in the grill larger. Either way, this is the most desirable Mach E I have seen yet.
Cool trim! I loved my Focus ST, the lesser version of the RS. I don't think you can recreate that experience with an EV drivetrain, the manual transmission is what made it work.
That said, this is still a cool ride for what it is!
I think automakers can create a manual transmission experience with EV's. Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has already achieved it with high praise from auto journalists. A rally version of the Ioniq N series would be interesting to see.
I really like the look. The biggest problem this has at 60k is the new Ioniq.
Soon as I saw the price, I was like 'ohhhh hard sell...'
I have a 2023 GT Performance Edition, and Ford recommended 90% daily charging for the 91 kWh NMC battery. People speculate that this is because the total capacity is 99 kWh. Is the 2024 car *only* 91 kWh total, and has Ford lowered its recommendation from 90% to 80%, as you said in the video?
You mentioned not having ventilated seats as a detriment. They get away with black interiors and no ventilation because all the glass avoids energy transfer. The interior does not heat up the way that you might expect on 90-plus degree days, and it stays at a temperature whereat the HVAC can compensate easily when you start the car.
My car being a 2023 has a glass roof, and maybe that the metal roof is more of a problem.
I like this more than the standard trim. It has more personality
Agreed!
turbofan/rally style wheels are always the way to go IMO. Look cool on everything
Big thumbs up for Alex getting absolutely soaked to make this vid for us! 👍💪
Welcome to the Seattle Rain Festival which runs from Jan 1 to Dec 31.
With LFP battery chemistry FINALLY making its way into EVs, I can actually start to consider the manufacturers who use it.
is LFP the ones that can be fully charged with less worry about battery lifespan
Yes
@@justabrokeredneck YES.........Paul
You can also not worry about those poor ppl in the Congo digging for cobalt
@@sprockkets idgaf about them anyway
Dam Alex, love the new threads. keep it up, looking good!
Love the wheels. So hard to find good looking stock wheels on EVs. Fog lights look cool as well. Not a fan of the wing though.
I love the rims
I’d love to put those wheels and that wing on my Mach E! Maybe even the stripes.
2022 GT non-Performance Edition owner here; I'd love to upgrade to this spec if the numbers worked out. Thanks!
If you know about 80's and 90's Ford European rally cars, then you know why this car is the way it is!
I think Ford made a mistake dumping P/HEV development in favor of exclusively pure EVs. I got a range estimate of 793 miles on my 2016 C-Max Energi with only a 2.0L I4 and a 5.6kWh battery pack, which meets my daily driving needs on all electric.
I like it I think the rims are sick
The only defect of this car is not being a Focus RS
Great video as usual! Can you eloborate more on the OTA update for increased power?? That's the first i've heard of that. Thanks!
Love it!! I want one!!
Locking performance behind a paywall...This is insane, it is the same as charging me to turn on my heated seats. If the hardware is there it should all work.
Agree. My volt has a real nice app that would give you charging status, alert you when charged lock doors etc. one day stopped working, GM started charging $15 a month for that. LAME makes me think twice about buying another GM. Just bad customer experience for any brand.
I love the white wheels.
Same!
Alex, We are going to have to agree to disagree. The white wheels are the only part of the Mock E that I approve of. 😉
He and I disagree on the wheels as well. -Travis
I really like this new version, although I wish it was in the mid-50K range, but that's just me... If I ever decide to move onto an EV it would probably be the Mach E and this Rally edition would be my first choice. If I did go this route I think my first upgrade would be a 2" inch lift with some Nitto Ridge Grapplers, which would make it a far better and more usable off-road vehicle, and I'm fine w/ losing a little range to get the increased look/driving experience.
LOL he got all excited to that 2 rounded fog lights.
And they look aftermarket tbh. lol.

Complete afterthought OEM accessories... nice...
Makes that markup sting a little less when you dangle some keys for those toddler brained buyers
It's amazing how men get excited by headlights. I think. Especially big headlights.
Something can’t be “a little more unique”. Unique is binary. It’s either unique or not.
You can use an umbrella, i won't unsub if you use one.
Your thoughtfulness is appreciated. -Travis
What I need is a PHEV version of a Transit Connect so I can carry my mountain bikes inside.
What Ford makes is…this thing. What practical use is there for this car other than making your sad life look cool commuting to work and the grocery store??? 99.9% of users can’t use 3.5s 0-60mph.
You know, Alex, we (as viewers) really wouldn't mind if you used an umbrella 🙂. Some of the British car reviewers do this - works with your waxed coat! Great review, cool car, love the wheels. The rally lights seem oddly small but might just be something to get used to in the LED age.
Or that cool golf hat umbrella
Price is outstanding I paid $70,000 for my GT love it
Best looking ev in my opinion!
$60k! Vehicle pricing is just insane.
And downgrade with no heat pump!
Can’t wait to see if Team O’Neil can get their hands on one to see if it will rally.
No ventilated seats, no heat pump, no powered steering wheel adjustment (important to set profiles between drivers), single pane side windows (first model year had double pane!), no driver seat tilt adjustment, panoramic roof is not standard, and Bluecruise is not only the same price as FSD but you get far less with it. That's a ton of cost cutting.
I just don't see how this will compete with the upcoming Tesla Model Y refresh and I believe it hardly competes right now, unless you just really like the aesthetics and having some more buttons on the interior.
Ouch.
I like the wheel shape, but don't like white wheels. I prefer a gunmetal color. Other than that, I really only want the increased ground clearance from that package.
It'll look better if it's wing-less
Those white wheels are beautiful
Very cool I just wish you could get it without the fake suede. I much prefer the perforated pleather in the Premium trim.
Hope they let you rip it around there at Dirtfish.
Fingers crossed one day ford gives us customizable drive modes over OTA 🤞
Great video. Why do I want to put icy white and blue fire graphics on the side? Love the post credit Easter egg!
Why would it have a geo lander tire? What you should have in mind is group B not mudding...
I have one of these ordered in Eruption Green. When I placed the order, they were saying it would be delivered in August, but now two weeks later, it's September delivery. I hope this isn't going to be a continual delay.
I had a reservation for the first year Mach-E which I eventually abandoned after 1-1/2 years.
I have been a rally fan since I bought my new 2005 WRX/STi and am really looking forward to it. I understand this is not a real rally car or anything close to it, but I like the styling and the Mach-E in general.
It’s not for me, but the white rims and wing make it rally like.
No umbrella in WA just means you're a local.
No HP or ventilated seats really drops this below new ID4 and Y.... especially Y given the price. I'd still argue ID4 has a larger perceived cabin over Y and Mach E.
This would look sick with a lift kit bigger tires
Those skinny tires in the first shot really sets expectations.
First impression...
This is a no, but I'm willing to listen.
I'll watch the full review when hits.
We'll see you then! -Travis
Those wheels would look snazzy on a white car.
There were a few examples at the event and yes, they do look snazzy. -Travis
I like the style the white rims I don’t mind but could do without them
7:22 I knew it! Alex is a witch! 🧙♂️
FORD if you are watching.. you must do a ken block edition and some of the proceeds go the charity
There is more buzz with the Chevy Equinox EV since it's one of the most affordable EVs on the market with decent stats.
Considering the limited numbers this will be sold in they should have made the NACS standard on these, otherwise cool car!
For a refresh they really needed to focus on charging speeds. 2024 needs 250 or higher
I would appreciate the extra clearance for all my snow driving. Wing looks stupid, though.
True dedication filming in all that rain 😅
The show must go on! -Travis
4:00 how does the no heat pump affect range I wonder? That seems like a weird choice considering all the other major players have HPs or moved to HPs?
While I don’t agree with it, there’s some questions on whether a heat pump is all that useful on an EV with such a big battery. The bigger the pack, the less useful a heat pump is since the amount of energy saved gets progressively smaller as a percentage. Personally, I think every kWh is precious and should be saved.
Google says a heat pump could help anywhere from 3-15% range improvement. I presume the upper limit of that would be when cranking the heat to max or something. Every little bit helps but of course Ford wanted to make sure they could logistically support the production ramp up of this (and the Lightning which I think is also a resistive heating setup). Not much doubt that future models will transition to heat pumps, especially as adoption in colder states grows.
@@ALMX5DP The 2024 Lightning added a heat pump, so it was an iterative update for that vehicle. I was surprised that the Mach-E didn't get it as well, but that leaves room for a 2025 refresh feature list that would include the J3400 connector and heat pump. Maybe we'll see other v2.0 updates as well, but Ford seems to be proceeding very conservatively, so who knows.
@@ALMX5DP it can also help with charging speed in the winter especially with LFP chemistry batteries
@@rusticroads oh I had no idea they updated the Lightning for ‘24, that’s pretty cool.
Was that Alex driving it off the track at the end? Sounded like Travis on the camera...
I'm not sure I'm in a position to either confirm or deny anything. -Travis
11:15 the fact that it doesn’t throttle as much under hard acceleration seems like a big deal!
It is for those who oasis for performance, yeah. -Travis
Alex, did you test any of the recent Model Y Long Range with standard Aero wheels? I know you tested longtime back, but in actual highway speeds (75MPH), can you test which whats the real range for Model Y Long Range with Aero wheels and Mach E AWD Long Range? Atleast in Summer, Model Y would not have much advantage because of heatpump.
Used Mach Es can be purchased for around $16,000
Put your hood on Alex, it’s raining! :p
Like most of it.....Especially the wheels with taller rubber......Depise low pro rubber.......Would like a more conventunal dash.........More like the R2 rivian..................Paul
Thanks for sharing Paul! -Travis
12:11 I have headlight controls on my 2023 Bolt EUV
Ultium ones now are touch based, if at least the silverado ev.
Ford's version of the Batmobile with that batwing and the Thunderbird turn signals, love it! but I will never buy american anymore even though my relatives own a Ford dealer. The build quality, materials as well as safety are always subpar.
Subpar compared to what? 2024 Toyota bZ4X with Lackluster acceleration and handling, Disappointing real-world range, and Difficult to find a natural-feeling seating position. I have driven that disappointing POS - stick with the Ford if you are going with BEV.
Pep Boys: We are the king of aftermarket cheese.
Ford: hold my beer...
I wish Ford would drop the name and call it the Mach-E RS. They do it anyway on the stitching and tags on the car. It's not a Mustang. Outside of that I like it!
As someone who's considering buying this, I 100% agree with you. You know that decision was made in a boardroom by somebody that didn't grow up owning Mustangs. Tell me you know nothing about cars without actually telling me.
Would you park it in an attached garage?
My rally is great so far!
Those wheels look pretty much like a copy of OZ Racing Rally - which are ancient, rally wheels, BUT they are insanely heavy in this day and age - I really hope those wheels on Mach E are not as heavy as they would destroy efficiency and driving experience of EV.
Still no ventilated seats. Agreed that it’s a big miss. All of the competitors offer that.
I want those wheels for my Ioniq 5!
Alex is saying Ford isn't locking the power down after a sprint - this needs to be confirmed as that was a big negative for a MUSTANG.
13:49 Those narrow tires in action I guess! Who was driving?
Maybe it's because I'm a cynical gamer, but paywalling speed feels like a loss to everyone.
Alex, you can use an umbrella. We won't be offended.
I still think naming it Mustang was a mistake. It needs its own brand. It’s not bad, but it’s not a Mustang.
See above that guy nails it, calling it a MachE ERS or rally. The Mach E name could absolutely be its own brand.
It would need some ICE emulation feature like Ioniq 5N to feel like a modern Focus RS.
Much can be done via software update if Ford was so inclined. -Travis
It also needs to emulate a size reduction 😂
@@WhatisaLee Maybe more importantly a weight reduction... 😂
the Hyundai Ionic N is better than ford’s mache
Nice car. Don't tell me it's a "Mustang" "Rally" car though.
Would love an electric Bronco. Lincolns not going offloading anytime soon.
Like it! What is the paint color on this one?
The color on this one is called "Glacier Gray Metallic". -Travis
No heat pump is an insta-scratch
heat pump has been way oversold as a power saving option, wisely automotive has tested BMW with and without heat pump only to find the effect on range is almost insignificant.
It's your call, but your climate will make a heat pump either very helpful or not so much at all. -Travis
Not a fan of the rear wing or the white wheels. I love my premium Mach E though
60k.. ford is out of their minds... They already screwed everyone with the promised 20k mavrick
Needs bigger spoiler
Very nice looking car too bad it's beyond my price range maybe in like 5 years I can get a decent used one within my price range.
Hopefully they remove the Mustang namesake from this vehicle and just call it the Mach E already. Other than that, i'm not familiar with the Rally culture, but using a 60k vehicle to play in the mud seems excessive. To each their own!
The people who have these cars are sueing Ford WTF are you talking about
Is that because of that welded control box or whatever?
I’m not trying to be a dick, but this is kind of juvenile and overstated. I like the Mach E and I appreciate the additional functionality of this, but the look would be embarrassing to drive, for me.
Then don't buy it. If a car isn't for you, and you don't have to buy it, then don't crap on it for other people that enjoy that it "is kind of juvenile and overstated".
@@TJDST4 If a comment isn’t for you, and you don’t have to agree with it, then don’t crap on it for other people that agree that the car is juvenile and overstated. I also should’ve added that I think that wing on the back is particularly juvenile because it implies functionality that it very likely doesn’t provide, while also looking absurd, and addling to the cost of an already overpriced vehicle.
@@vegansoyCalm down.
@@NomenClature-o8s love the Alpha vibes 👍🏻
Love the look except those wheels
Who would choose this over an Ioniq 5n?
This thing is sweet
Rally car appearance package 😂
It's a little more than that. -Travis
Taurus Mach E
My feeling on Ford that they can't afford to compete, nearly every legacy have more EVs than Ford. I understand they losing billions but nearly every other automakers have more EVs than Ford and despite them saying they going to slow down they still going to be ahead of Ford when it comes to EVs. Ford should have been competing with GM instead of Tesla and Rivian with their vehicles, though I do like the F-150 lighting and all it can do.
The Mach E is the number on selling non-Tesla EV in 2023, it's not like nobody is buying the two Ford EV models that exist. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide I think they would have done better if they made a EV Escape (which I feel take the shape of) to compete with the VW ID4 and GM Bolt and not try to make it too sporty because of the name. I think an EV Escape would have been a lot more family family if they went after that group instead of people who likes to drive fast cars.
If these EVs can't get 400 or 500 miles of range, they are very expensive toys. They are frequently advertised based on the main thing electric motors have, and that's high torque and hp at low speeds. In other words, a fast toy that can realistically go a hundred miles or so and then, if you are dumb enough to try a trip in one, you get to wait in line at one of the few chargers for hours. Boy. That might kill all the fast driving fun.
The companies making these 100% EVs need to go back and focus on hybrids that will cut the carbon emissions by at least 50%, get 700 to 900 mile range on one tank of regular gas, have heating and A/C cooling that that have little to no effect on the range, are much lighter and have less wear on tires and damage to roads, and most importantly, do not drive up the cost of our home power to those that don't drive EVs, or cause more pollution than charging EVs. Forget this 100% EV crap until there is battery tech that is practical, OR some other form of power that doesn't make power companies bill increase for all people, or pollute the air burning crude forms of oil products.
Does this model still have issues with high voltage contractors fusing?
Yeah, he completely skipped over, missed, or doesn't even know about it.
What is high voltage contractors? Are they fusing because of to little flux in the capacitors? To much blinker fluid?
This is absolutely and hideously over-priced. This new in the uk is £74k. Let that sink in for a second. I had to pause when I saw the price. If you are paying north of £70k for THIS, you absolutely need to see a psychiatrist. I’m staggered at that cost.
This thing is giving me "tall Hyundai Tiburon" vibes. Doesn't look like a fake mustang from the side as much anymore. They should just drop the mustang part of the name completely and just call it "the Mach-E".
Off road version
Now That’s funny
Not even if it were the last car on earth...
