Hope you enjoy this video! I've also just launched a *new course* - how to (loosely) sketch people. I'm really excited by it, and I'd love to have you join me - find it here - www.sketchloose.co.uk/sketch-people
I think that Japan is a wonderful place to do urban sketching - the landscapes, the history, the people all call out to be drawn and coloured! I hope that you had a great time there.
Seconded. Its the promised Land concerning everything pens und all stationary, Home of pentel, pilot, tombow und much more. Even german brands release japan only products that are quiet hard to geht here.
I've taken many fountain pens (vac, piston, and cartridge) on several different flights including "across the pond" and have not had any issues. I just make sure they are in the cabin with me and facing nib up. The most I've seen is a little ink mist in the cap and that was probably more from being jostled around vs pressure. I do also try to make sure they are pretty full because I've heard that helps because there is less air to displace. Same goes for small sample cartridges with extra ink. (But of course I place them all in a separate Ziplock bag just in case lol. )
Just in time. I'm heading up to Japan in 2 weeks. I've been going over and over what I really need, this will help me rethink. Thank you. looks like you had a great time. Looking forward to watching your videos.
I’m making a long distance trip and I’ve been preparing for traveling with paints. I’m bringing watercolor pencils paints and two different sketch pads, vertical and horizon. I hope it works out and I got a old thing that clips on full water.
I'm planning to sketch during my Japan trip late autumn too ❤ My kit is a lot smaller hehe (A6 pad, A5 board, clips with magnets, tin can palette, a couple of water brushes, sakura liners, a pencil & eraser) Cant wait to see the result of you Japan sketches ❤
It's not a certainty - it's happened to me a couple of times. Explosion is a bit of an exaggeration... but the end result of ruined bag is much the same.
I bought all my clamps in rather random places I'm afriad :/ Like ASDA... a few from Jackson's. I'm updating my supplies page later this week - I'll try to find a good link and add it there.

It really is an amazing place!
I agree. I personally love storefronts especially old ones from the showa era ❤
Pack light. Japan has the best stationery stores on the planet.

Haha
That's what I was thinking too... take the expensive supplies and then just buy a few items ... you KNOW you'll be shopping in those stores anyway!!
Don’t forget to leave room for the art supplies you’ll bring back! I hear the art supply stores there are wonderful 😊
Divine!
hehe yes

Thanks for watching!
Great video! Looking forward to your Japan videos. I do hope you visited a store or two as well!! 😊
I did!
Preparing for a big trip is about half the fun of travel!
Enjoy your trip and sketch to your heart content. Enjoy!
Thank you! Will do!
Enjoy your trip. You can buy wonderful inks and paints in Japan everywhere. I'm envious in a good way. People are so nice and helpful in Japan.
Thanks for the tips!
I love the Derwent flat waterbrush! If I could only have one waterbrush, that would be it.
I'm with you there!
Toby! You just helped me pack for Bath 2025! 😂😂😂. So excited for your Japan trip…..
Hehe that's exactly the idea ;)
Really enjoying the Tombow ABT Pro pens. Got the landscape set and just ordered a few more strong colours.
They are really ratehr fun!

Lucky you! I'd love to go there. I thoroughly recommend 'Abroad in Japan' by Chris Broad for a fascinating read. Best wishes to you, Dudley

If you’re there early to mid November Toby, we’ll keep an eye out for you 😀.
There are some wonderful art supplies in Japan which you can’t get here
I'm DEFINITELY acquiring a fountain pen!
I never knew fountain pens explode on airplanes 😲 I've been traveling with fountain pens my whole life and I've never had any issues...

I’ve been looking for one of those big yellow clamps in your final, image……is that from Japan? Or can I buy one in UK? If so, do you have the link?
I bought all my clamps in rather random places I'm afriad :/ Like ASDA... a few from Jackson's.
I'm updating my supplies page later this week - I'll try to find a good link and add it there.
Boa viagem, Toby! 🌷🇧🇷
