21:06 Regarding exercises for art stability, the completely free "Draw a Box" course absolutely changed my lines forever. So far, I'm still in the first lesson out of seven, and even though I haven't finished it yet, not only have my lines become far more precise, but I no longer feel nervous using any kind of ink and am able to confidently draw lines. Since using fineliners is a requirement for the course (which technically means it isn't 100% a free course), inking hasn't been as intimidating, and I've actually grown to enjoy working exclusively with ink. Besides, the ghosting technique and the warmup exercises (which are the homework, except done willingly as a warmup) makes mileage the least of your worries.

As an artist that's probably been doing art long before either of you were born, there's some really good tips in this! One of them being doing some exercises to help get a steadier hand, which I absolutely need! I practice/study/create illuminations from medieval manuscripts, and while my pencil work looks spot on, once I start inking, I suddenly have "shakey hand syndrome" and my lines are wobbly. Even worse when I start applying either gilding size or the paint. I'm trying to get my lines to look smooth and controlled, like the illuminator masters - just seeing them up close and personal, in person, just blows my mind! For the most part, I've tried putting my hand on a folded towel, and that worked up to a point. Lately, I've been experimenting with using my T-square as one of those painters sticks , where I reset the T part of on the table, and I rest my hand on the ruler part, while holding it up with my non-dominant hand. I'm pretty new at this technique, and it's not perfect but..practice makes perfect, right?

Lots of awesome information in here that would have saved me quite a bit of money over the years!
I started out using the brush pens for line weight variation but found they were super hard to control. I think most comic artists (at least during the Marvel Golden Age) use them for things like water ripples, shadows, and reflections on metallic surfaces.
I can never get the colorless blenders to work for the alcohol markers, though. I always wind up taking one colored marker's tip and rubbing it against another colored marker tip and then scribbling it out that way in order to make gradients.

  • @mycology5242
    @mycology5242 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Great video. The lead softness thing is a little bit confusing. So, it doesn’t change the information at all, but here’s a bit of correction and extra info for the viewers.
H stands for hardness(H - 9H). B is for boldness/blackness, how dark the lines are(B -9B). Bigger number; higher the ratio of graphite to clay, making the lead softer and more brittle. HB is a medium between hard and soft. F is between H and HB.
So softer lead means darker lines, harder means lighter lines.
It doesn’t help that the American number 1, number 2 pencil scale goes from soft to hard.

For people wondering about more information on the tools used (like pencil and the lead holder) and maybe even alternatives. I will post this under both of these videos, but you could've researched this yourself. However I guess it's easier to ask than put in a little research. And since I did it anyway :) Here you go:
In the new video called "The Art Advice I Wish I Knew Sooner" at 58 seconds they show the pencils and markers he is using most recently. In the video called "You Asked, We Answered!" at 3 minutes and 55 seconds they show the mechanical pencil and lead holder he used back then. I will cover both, as the tools are not really that important. But alas:
MECHANICAL PEN: For the mechanical pencil he still uses the Pentel GraphGear 500. You could get the little more high end 1000, though I don't like the clip on that (has a large footprint). In the same category of quality mechanical pencils you could try other readily available and highly regarded options like the rOtring 600 series (or the 800 for a little more quality, because why stop here?) as well. I am using the Uni Kuru Toga Elite (which rotates the lead. I like that, because it's always somewhat sharp but not too sharp. But makes it a little harder sometimes to use it diagonally for truly soft shadows or push the pencil and not stab the paper (but good paper can handle it). However I always keep pencils on the side (HB/2B/4B covers most of the work). Experiment with it (Kuru Toga) if you're curious, it's not that expensive. I can certainly recommend it). The Ohto MS01 might also be an exotic option for you. With all of these the trick is: use what you like. Whichever one of these you will get, they will last you a lifetime. Also experiment with f.e. 0.5mm and 0.7mm. He uses 0.5mm. Because of the bigger tip on 0.7mm it runs a bit smoother on paper, though lines are a little less crispy. Explore which one you like the most. Then again, this doesn't make the difference between a bad and great artist. Want to deep dive what options there are? Check r/mechanicalpencils on Reddit.
LEAD HOLDER: The lead holder named in the previous video is the Koh-I-Noor Versatil 5905. Which is 2.5mm. You also have the 5900 (which is the one in the image, despite the text saying 5905) which is 2mm. In the new video he uses the lead holder Faber Castell TK9400 in 4B (which is 3.15mm. 4B/5B/6B all are 3.15mm. The harder ones (3B/2B/B/HB/H/2H/3H) are all 2.0mm). The pencils are the Faber Castell Jumbo 9000 (the 2B is shown).
INK PENS: For Ink Pens he uses the COPIC Multiliner SP 0.2 and the Sakura Pigma Micron 03 and he also shows the brush pen called the Kuretake Zig XO50-10B Cambio (Medium Brush Pen).
MARKERS: Lastly, for markers he uses the STA Color Marker Art.No.3202 with Alcohol Based Ink. These are basically cheaper knock offs of the expensive ones, but work just as fine. You can find sets on eastern market sites (like Ali). Basically any Alcohol Based Marker with a fine and broad side will do.
Lastly PAPER: there is no information on this (except for roughness), and you can draw on anything. Paper, cardboard, walls, because again, why stop here?! (at paper). But seriously: buy sketching paper. My general rule of thumb is 120 grams and up. It will make a HUGE difference, more than ANY pencil will. Drawing on the same 80 grams printer paper all the time works, however you'll destroy the paper more often than you'ld like, you'll have less feedback, you can't erase too hard, paper wrinkles easily, etc. But there is no need to spend big on it. Almost all sketching paper (>=120 grams, maybe for you >=100 grams) will work.
You can make all of this as expensive as you want, but generally it's how you handle the tools that make the art (just like any great guitarist will sound good on a cheap or a $10k guitar). Especially for expendable tools like pencils, lead holders, markers and the likes. Not counting the mechanical pens, because it's obvious there are quality differences, but even cheap ones will last you years. For me, I also like the weight and feel of better mechanical pens for example. Also not really counting the Ink Pens (even though the Brush Pen is relatively cheap and I am not experienced with those) because I found there to be a huge difference in how they work drawing line work over pencil stripes for example, how fast they dry out, how fast the ink dries, how smooth they run the paper, etc. But higher price is not always better. The ones mentioned here are great!

Great video. Thank you! Do you ever use sandpaper to create chisel points?
13:06 I use 320 grade to create a 45 degree angle... It's like two tools in one, for shading and ultra thin lines.
