GoPro HERO4 - Version 2.00 Firmware - How to set up & Use Timelapse Video Mode

  • Another great new feature that comes with the Version 2.0 Firmware update for GoPro HERO4 Black & Silver Edition cameras is Timelapse Video. Unlike Timelapse Photos where you take a series of photos and stitch them together in an editing program, Timelapse video creates a single mp4 file that can either be uploaded straight to social media sites or can be easily edited to speed up, slow down, colour correct or add music and combined with other video footage.
Here's a how-to video on how to set it up and how to use it. Plus there's some example Timelapse Video footage as well.
I think this new feature in the GoPro HERO4 will make it a lot easier for people to create some awesome Timelapse sequences.
Here's the link to my Timelapse Calculator spreadsheet:

Still a good tutorial video in 2020! I've just got a 3D printer so decided to get my old GoPro 4 out the cupboard and dust it off to do print time-lapses! I'd totally forgotten after all this time how to use my GoPro... The 4 Black I have is still a great camera BTW! Thanks !

      Hi Stephen
I'm happy to hear that. We have been so busy lately we haven't had time to make many videos.
I love all my GoPro cameras (I have almost all of them) and can't wait to start using my GoPro HERO9.

Diego Villalba Thanks Diego. On my PC, I use Sony Vegas Movie studio platinum versions 12 & 13 (version 13 has 4K settings but is otherwise a bit clunky).
I like Vegas because it is easy to use. My internet connection is a bit slow so I never really get to watch it at full quality but I'll take your word for it.
I always render out at 1080 with a bit rate of 8mbps (which is what TH-cam recommends) - I would use the highest bit rate available if I was rendering to burn onto a DVD.
If you have a Mac then I would recommend final cut Pro. Friends who have made the switch to mac and now use Final Cut Pro say the quality is even better.
My next computer will be a Mac.
Let me know if you want more details about render settings.

It sounds like you need to upgrade the firmware in your HERO4 Silver. T Lapse Vid was released in version 2.0 firmware and it's still there in Version 3.0
      You can watch this video:
      th-cam.com/video/hO4vWZFG9dE/w-d-xo.html
It shows how to update your firmware via the GoPro APP.
And this one shows how to connect your camera to the Gopro APP, if you don't know how to do that.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Hey, im about asking you about the "timelapse video" in hero 4 silver. I dont have the "timelapse video" in my setting option 😫 do you know how to fix this problem? I only have " video, video+photo, and looping" pleasee... I need to figure this out

    • @brynmag
      @brynmag  9 ปีที่แล้ว

EXO XIUMIN It should go Video, T Lapse VID, Vid +Photo and then Looping...in that order. Have you definitely updated to version 2.0 firmware?
If not, update. If so, rest camera to defaults and/or reflash version 2.0 firmware and try again.
Actually you should be able to install version 3.0 firmware which is out now. I just did mine and everything works fine.
Timelapse Video is one of the best new features I have seen in a long time.

GoPro Photographer I think of Geezer as being a Term of "Endearment" that can be taken either way. You can call yourself Geezer and it's fun but some people might take offence.
This is what Wikipedia has to say:
Geezer is a slang term for a man. It can carry either the connotation of age and eccentricity in the UK, or that of self-education such as craftiness or stylishness (to a lesser degree). In the US the term often refers to a cranky old man.
It's probably good you changed it now as it gets harder to change your channel name after a while.
Yeah I'm good thanks. Busy enjoying all the activities I am involved in which leaves less time for making TH-cam videos.
      Take it easy.

Brynmag - thanks for the video - very informative. I have a question that I can't seem to find on the Gopro web site. Do you know if any of the other video settings work/correspond with the Time lapse video such as protune, low light, white balance. I know you can't choose any of them, but I was wondering if somehow they apply. I am trying to figure out how well the time lapse video works in day to night/night to day time lapses in comparison to a traditional time lapse method. Any thoughts or experience? Thanks

    • @brynmag
      @brynmag  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jesslash
The only settings available in Timelapse video are:
Interval - Select from 0.5 up to 60 second intervals
      Resolution - Choose between 4K or 2.7K (4:3 ratio).
Everything else is preset, so if you want to change any other settings, you should use Timelapse Photos.
Day to Night or Night to Day is the Holy Grail for Timelapse Enthusiasts. So far the GoPro HERO4 has not handled this transition very well. I am hoping for either a Firmware upgrade for the HERO4 Black that will give us better results OR more control in the next model camera, which potentially would have an even more advanced processor.
Having said that the HERO4 Black is still an amazing little camera and it already can do so much for such a small camera. It is unfair to expect it to do better than most expensive DSLR cameras.
I am working towards getting a better DSLR camera, combined with a smart APP to help achieve the perfect Day/Night transitions.
Timelapse Video is just about my favorite feature in any GoPro camera yet. It easily creates superb quality timelapse sequences in good light.
Also Nightlapse creates reasonable quality Star timelapse sequences. Not as good as a DSLR but reasonable.
Going from one to the other is the tricky bit.

What setting would you recommend to take pictures of fireworks using light lapse mode please?

    • @brynmag
      @brynmag  9 ปีที่แล้ว

+Carl Draper I'm not sure at the moment. I did shoot a nightlapse fireworks with the camera on AUTO. The smallest interval is 2 seconds, which I discovered is a long time in the life of fireworks. It created trails that didn't look very good.
I had a friend who just filmed it with his iphone and it looked alright.
I am thinking that maybe just a Timelapse with 0.5 second intervals and Protune on with the ISO at it's highest setting (800) might work out to be the best thing. Although it's hard to prove when I only get to see fireworks once a year at Christmas where I live.
Maybe even just shooting video with Protune on and ISO cranked up to 3200 might work too. You could speed it up later if needed.

Hi. I normally use 0.5 or 1 second intervals, as people move quite fast. For traffic I use 0.5 and for clouds 5 seconds gets some nice movement.

Hi Marco. I normally use Sony Vega Movie Studio on my PC. I also have Premiere Elements but I prefer the way Vegas works.

Does the video time lapse mode take still pictures just like the time lapse mode in the picture setting. If this is the case is there any difference between the two modes other than the video mode tells you how long the time lapse is rather than how many pictures the camera has taken? Lastly can you get 4k in the picture time lapse mode too?

      Hi *****
No it just creates the mp4 file, without taking still images.
If we look at how Film is created. A traditional film camera exposes the light sensitive film to create individual images. The shutter opens and closes 24 times every second (24 frames per second) and when the film is run through a projector at 24fps it gives the impression of movement.
Digital video cameras do the same thing except that the information is stored as data instead. You can advance through a video timeline frame by frame. Each second of unedited video will have a set number of frames depending on what it was shot at (12,24,25,30,48,50,60,120, etc).
The HERO4 is capturing one frame every X seconds (AKA the interval - for example 1 exposure every second) and skipping all the other moments in between. It then stitches it together in the camera as a single mp4 Timelapse Video file.
Timelapse photos creates individual photos that are saved as individual files.
You can choose different Megapixel size for the photos. I use 12MP as it is the best. Not 4K but still good.
      Hope this helps.

***** I planned to make a video series breaking down all that information. i.e. "Frame Rates made Simple" because a lot of people don't really understand what it all means. Resolutions, Frame rates, codecs, bit rates, etc.
I could make hundreds of these videos if I had the time.

For me (and many others I'm sure) that would be a very helpful video. I get very lost with codecs and bit rates specifically but I'm learning slowly ( very slowly) lol. Anyway I think your videos are very informative and I have learned a lot from them! Keep up the great work!

gerardo071000 I haven't tested individual intervals but the battery life is good. I will do a battery life test when I get around to it.

OxsingLP It's in video mode. If video is your default when you turn it on, then press the settings button on the side. It will change Video> T Lapse Vid> Vid & Photo>Looping. If T Lapse Vid is not there, then it sounds like you haven't updated your firmware.

At least a Class 10 MicroSD card but I use and recommend Lexar 633x cards. If you intend to use 4K with Protune ON, then consider the LEXAR 1000x cards.
