Adding/subtracting fractions is fifth grade math. It's one thing if it takes several seconds with the girl that solved it. It's another if you can't solve it at all like it appears with the other girl. Fractions come up in life. Adding/subtracting them is an actually useful and helpful skill to have. It's outside of the realm of "their own subject". It's similar to if someone didn't know how to use capital letters or read a bar graph, or any other elementary school level stuff.

Fractions come up plenty in my life (my job, my kid's hw, cooking, board games). But even if I didn't use that skill much (such as knowing countries or states) I'm happy I do know it for whenever it is needed.
